2019-08-04 Thread Peri Hartman via EV
While JD Power puts a negative spin on the statistics, I actually find
them pretty encouraging.

Consumer reports states 36% would consider buying an EV for their next
car.
I looked up the JD Power survey, and they say 40% of those who have
*never* been in an EV would consider buying one.

https://www.jdpower.com/business/press-releases/2019-mobility-confidence-index-study-fueled-surveymonkey-audience

Obviously that's different than actually buying one. But if we currently
have only some tiny percentage of EV ownership, that could change
rapidly if just half of those considering an EV actually buy one.

Car Buyers May Not Prefer Electric Vehicles But They Prefer The Tesla Model

A couple of recent reports say that most car buyers will not consider an EV.
But that doesn't seem to be having any effect on Tesla sales.

Results of a J.D. Power survey and Survey Monkey released July 30 said car
buyers have a "neutral level of confidence" about the future of electric
vehicles. "Attributes scoring lowest include likelihood of purchasing an
electric vehicle," the survey results said.

Two-thirds (68%) of consumers say they have no experience with
battery-electric vehicles, "meaning they have never been in one," J.D. Power
said.

Consumer Reports was more optimistic about the future of EV purchases but
said that only 36 percent of prospective car buyers in the CR 2019 Plug-In
Electric Vehicles survey would consider getting a plug-in electric vehicle
for their next new car.

If you're General Motors or BMW or Mercedes or a growing list of new EV
entrants into the market that points to an uphill struggle to sell lots of
EVs.

Tesla is another story

But those dour[gloomy] survey results don't seem to apply to the Tesla
brand. The American-made Model 3 was by far the leading EV sold worldwide,
according to June global numbers posted by Inside EVs on July 31.

Tesla sold just shy of 40,000 Model 3s globally in June. The BAIC EU-Series
was a distant second at almost 18,000 copies, while BYD Yuan was third with
6,566 sold.

Most of the other top 20 are Chinese, European, or Japanese brands. Chevy
(Bolt and now discontinued Volt) didn't even make it into the top 20.

Of course, Tesla has to remain a going concern in order to keep selling and
servicing all of those Model 3s.

The company posted a worse-than-expected $408 million loss in the second
quarter and has rising long-term debt to service, totaling about $10 billion
at the end of the first quarter. And July U.S. numbers for the Model 3
weren't as strong as June.

But Tesla keeps defying the odds. And will likely continue to do so as long
as it continues to dominate the global EV market and doesn't tarnish* its
globally recognized brand.

Nothing about EVs is all that economical - today. The tech is new. The EV

You'd need a half-dozen pack swaps to get through a 12-hour day. These are

It is indeed a challenge. However, there are solutions.

One is not to store the energy in the vehicle itself. Large mining and
earth-moving equipment is often electric, and are powered by a cord (a
giant version of a lawnmower with a cord).

I recall reading about a farmer who bought some tracked military vehicle
surplus. He wanted to use it as a tractor. It happened to use electric
motors to drive the treads, and a diesel generator to provide power
(like a railroad locomotive). But the diesel generator was gone.

So, he mounted a big spool on a pole in the middle of the field. The
power cable was wound around this pole. As he drove around the pole, the
cable wound up on the spool until he reached the center. I guess it
worked for him. :-)

Maybe, but I didn't think that we'd see mass production EVs with 300 mile
range by now, and here we are. So I wouldn't bet my retirement savings that
it isn't possible.

Now, whether the customer will WANT it and/or PAY for it, those are other
matters entirely.

There's the rub, isn't it? The article doesn't really address that at all.

Fully electric agriculture is going to be a tough nut to crack. Sure, "gators"
and light-duty equipment might go electric, but pulling a six-bottom plough
through clay soil for twelve hours? Ain't gonna happen in MY lifetime!

Electric cars are all over the roads these days. But what about electric
planes?

Air travel currently accounts for only about 2% of global carbon emissions.
But it's expected to grow in the next century, and clean air travel is seen
as a key part of slowing global warming.

"We're expecting to see massive growth," says Umair Irfan, who writes about
climate change, energy and the environment for Vox. "The International Civil
Aviation Organization projects upward of 700 percent growth by the middle of
the century. So while it is small, it is going to be a larger and larger
share."

This interview has been edited lightly for clarity and length.

You've written that we need electric airplanes. Why?

We need to be able to counteract that (growth in air travel) somehow.
Electrifying air travel is one key option, particularly for shorter flights,
and we're already seeing at least a couple airlines experimenting with it.
(Harbour Air) in the Pacific Northwest aims to electrify its whole fleet,
but it only flies routes (shorter) than 100 miles.

Right now, that's where the technology is. It can basically support small
aircraft going short distances, but you absolutely need something that's
going to decarbonize air travel to some extent because it is going to be a
large and growing share of the problem.

Are any airlines already using them to carry passengers?

Not right now. One of the big issues is that the Federal Aviation
Administration hasn't approved electric aircraft for passenger air travel.
The regulations are actually a big hang-up right now because much of the
rules are structured around conventional aircraft, and now they need a new
set of rules to deal with battery electric aircraft. That's also going to be
challenged in the coming years.

Considering where technology stands today, how far are we from having an
electric airplane that could cross the Atlantic Ocean?

The key problem right now is that jet fuel is extremely energy dense and
batteries are not. And in an airplane, space is at a premium and so is
weight. And so you want to pack as much power into a smaller space as
possible. Batteries are improving, but not fast enough right now. They need
to be able to store much more energy in a much smaller space.

Some airlines are experimenting with biofuels. Is that helpful?

Biofuels are a big part of it as well. The idea is that if you use a crop
that takes CO2 from the air and you burn that instead, effectively it's
carbon neutral. That's a little bit tricky to pull off, though, because you
want to make sure you get more energy out of the fuel than you expend to
grow it in the first place.

Biofuels are also a little bit more expensive than conventional fuels. And
so you have to make sort of an economic argument. Right now, airlines are
experimenting with it, but it's more expensive than conventional fuels and
so we need a really substantial price drop in order to make inroads.

For people who want to do something about their flight-related carbon
emissions now, is buying carbon offsets really the only option?

The biggest impact option would be just to fly less, and there's a global
movement that's kind of sprung up to try to encourage people to do that. I
think the estimate is that each leg of a journey on a roundtrip flight
across the Atlantic emits about a ton of CO2. So that's 2 tons of CO2, and
that's roughly enough to melt about 30 square feet of Arctic ice. So that's
a very direct relationship between your actions and your impact on the
environment. And for some people that's been a pretty startling revelation.

Do you think the airlines feel the urgency to get an electric plane up in
the air?

There is some pressure on the airlines right now because of a global "flying
shame" movement (making people feel guilty for the carbon emissions caused
by their flights) that's kind of taken off. The Swedes have even coined a
word for it. They call it flygskam.

Customers are now increasing pressure on the airlines. They want to assuage
their guilt for flying. Many people see it as necessary, but they want to
see more heavy lifting coming from the airlines themselves in terms of
getting more fuel efficient or coming up with better offsetting schemes or
mitigating greenhouse gas emissions in other ways.

Jetskis are a bit like motorbikes for the water. Hydrofoil boards and boats
allow users to cut through and rise above the waves. The WaveFlyer merges
the two, and throws in electric propulsion for a cleaner and quieter ride.

Billed as the world's first electric hydrofoil jetski, the WaveFlyer is the
result of a partnership between the University of Adelaide's Renewable
Energy Vehicle Project, Perth's Electro Aero and Galaxy Resources. It builds
on the work on Australia's first electric jetski from 2015.

When at rest, the personal watercraft has the look of a traditional jetski,
but as it moves off the main body rises up as the patent-pending WaveDrive
stabilized twin hydrofoil propulsion system slices through the water.

It can fly above the waves for over 30 minutes per trip courtesy of its 2
kWh Li-ion battery pack, and can accommodate two riders.

Precious little has been revealed at this point. The WaveFlyer is still in
the prototype phase of development, but the project's Professor Thomas
Brauni sees "tremendous commercial potential for this eco-friendly
watercraft." While we wait for more details to be released, you can see it
in action in the video below.

[EVDL] EVLN: Tired F-150 ice converted as pickup e-truck

Ecotuned Electric Ford F-150 Is A Tired Truck With New Life As An EV

Instead of dumping it, why not convert it to electricity?

Ford has an eye on electric pickup trucks. The recent stunt of an F-150
electric prototype towing 1.25 million pounds in a railway proves that. What
some probably are not aware of is that Ford will not be the first one to
produce an electric F-150. Ecotuned, from Canada, has already made 15 of
them. But you will not be able to buy any unless you own a fleet.

When we first mentioned the company, back in 2017, it was mostly a promise,
even after having converted five Ford F-150 to run on electricity. After two
years, the company told Green Car Reports it has converted ten more vehicles
and that it is currently working on more units. With a single mission: to
recycle pickups and put them to work again. As EVs ...

The reasoning is simple: fleets normally get rid of pickup trucks when the
powertrain warranty ends, in around 6 years. By that time, the fleet owner
will have to sell its old pickup truck for about 8 percent of what it
originally cost to buy a new vehicle.

Instead of spending that much money, Ecotuned suggests getting the old
pickup truck converted to electric at a CDN$ 35,000 cost – around US$
26,600. With government incentives included. Which would be less than what
Ford charges for an F-150. But this is where the trouble begins.
Ecotuned Electric F-150 Is A Tired Truck Put To Work Again As An EV

A brand-new 2019 F-150 XLT starts from CDN$ 26,837 according to Ford
Canada’s website. Ecotuned claims it costs C$ 48,000 on its home page. That
makes the conversion seem cheaper than a new F-150, which is not correct.

Ecotuned presents a spreadsheet with the calculation, but it also uses the
wrong prices for the F-150 and uses a lot of parameters that really do not
allow for a fair comparison. It also mentions a period of four years between
each kit installation while stating the value of the battery pack after 12
years of use.

Ecotuned Electric F-150 Is A Tired Truck Put To Work Again As An EV

This is perhaps due to the fact that Ecotuned claims the same kit – with
battery packs that range from 43 kWh up to 86 kWh, a 2-speed transmission
and a BorgWarner HVH250 permanent-magnet motor, able to deliver 214 hp and
295 lb-ft – can be exchanged to other vehicles. At least three times during
its 1 million kilometers (a little more than 620,000 miles), according to
the company.
Ecotuned Electric F-150 Is A Tired Truck Put To Work Again As An EV

We will ask Ecotuned for clarification, but it seems it was not necessary
for the company to have important clients, such as IGA, Aéroports de
Montréal, Hydro Québec and the Québec and Montreal administrations.
Apparently, converting old F-150 into EVs made a solid business case for
them.

Apart from Ford’s pickup truck, Ecotuned promises it will also convert vans
and GM and RAM/Dodge products very soon. If the vehicle uses a body-on-frame
structure, it will be able to receive the kit.

Ecotuned Spec Sheet

Ecotuned has plans to sell the kits at Midas or Mr. Muffler stores. It
currently requires two technicians and two days – or around 32 hours of work
– to get the kit installed.

head. If you're in the market for a practical electric car with bundles of
range then the Kia e-Niro is right up the list to consider - if you can get
one.

Cars have the ability to surprise and excite. It's one of the reasons people
love cars so much, the thing that makes them more than just a commodity,
greater than the sum of its parts.

You might not think this when you look at the e-Niro. Sitting between the
Stonic and the Sportage in size, it's almost a generic-looking crossover.
But while it might not capture your heart like the Tesla Model 3, it will
capture you head - because it's an electric car that makes a whole lot of
sense.

Here's why, having lived with one for a week, it's easy to love.
Designed to blend into the background?

We have to start with exterior design. Kia has totally reinvented itself in
recent years. From rather ugly cars into real head-turners - it's been quite
the transformation. The Niro launched as a hybrid in 2016 and the e-Niro
sits in the same bodywork. It's a practical five-door crossover - not quite
as large as the Sportage, the design being a little more muted too.

There's no avoiding that the Kia e-Niro sits close to the Hyundai Kona
Electric, as these sibling companies offer much the same spec on cars. The
Kona Electric looks more exciting, but the e-Niro is slightly cheaper.

The e-Niro makes a show of closing the front grille - it doesn't need engine
cooling, after all - with just the panel to pop open and charge the car on
the front. There's some highlighting in electric blue and with this review
model being a First Edition, it comes in a fairly high spec. Apart from
that, it looks like the other Niro models on the road.

For those not familiar with Kia, the number of trim levels is kept to a
minimum. There are usually three choices and no further options list -
because everything is bundled within those trim levels. There are no choices
apart from the colour of the paint, which makes it really easy to see what
you're getting, while keeping the price easy to monitor too.

The interior of this First Edition e-Niro is finished with leather seats and
touch points (some is faux leather, not that you'll notice), but much of the
cabin uses harder plastics. That's a hallmark of affordability, and while
the dash is a softer-touch material across the top, once you get down to the
door pockets, it's all plastic. That's great if you have kids, because it's
easy to clean up, but it won't rival the premium interior you'll get in
something like the Audi e-tron.

That perhaps doesn't matter at this level though. It's not interior quality
that brings people to brands like Kia. It's value for money and
practicality. And that's where the e-Niro hits it out of the park.

The ride height is well suited to urban environments, letting you see down
the road, and there's plenty of space for passengers in the rear too. The
rear seat is given space preference over the boot, which is similar to what
you'd find in many hatchbacks, but at 451 litres the boot is still certainly
big enough to stow the weekly shop, buggy or weekend baggage.

So from a design perspective, it's easy to pick at the e-Niro, it's easy

The 2-seater, based on the earlier Alfieri concept, will see pilot
production next year with customer deliveries in North America likely in
early 2021.

Maserati will finally replace its 12-year-old GranTurismo next year with a
new sports car available with a battery-electric powertrain. The details
about the car are minimal but the all-electric version is expected to use a
three-motor setup enabling a 0–60 time of just two seconds.

Maserati won’t be the only automaker embracing electrification, like Jaguar,
Volkswagen, and Porsche are all pushing toward the new powertrain
technology. Unlike Maserati, some of these brands are going all-in on
electric cars. Volkswagen will release its last new internal combustion
engine in 2026. Volvo’s Polestar brand will only have pure EVs after the
Polestar 1 sports car.

Part of the reason could be Maserati’s plan to base the sports car on a
modular platform that will eventually underpin the automaker’s full lineup,
which may have required a change in design.

EV Hire
The platform is flexible enough to support mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid and
battery-electric powertrains. The move is part of the automaker’s plan to
offer a battery-electric powertrain on every model it sells by the end of
2022 as it looks to transform into a tech leader in the premium segment.

It means a planned Porsche Macan rival Maserati is working on will also use
the new platform and not the Alfa Romeo Stelvio’s platform, as was
previously planned. The new SUV is due around 2021, according to Fiat
Chrysler Automobiles’ most recent five-year plan for Maserati that was
announced a year ago.

Maserati’s battery-electric powertrain, branded Maserati Blue, will consist
of up to three electric motors and run on 800-volt battery technology,
possibly developed in partnership with Ferrari.

The new sports car will be revealed next year, likely during March’s Geneva
International Motor Show, it may not be available for sale until the
following year or even 2022. Production will be handled at Maserati’s plant
in Modena, Italy, where the production of the GranTurismo will finally cease
this December.

]

A little-known Chinese electric vehicle maker is breaking into some of the
world’s hardest-to-crack markets. Its strategy? Tiny cars.

Five-year-old Kaiyun Motors said it has started selling electric pickups in
May to Europe and the US—albeit less than 100 in total. That makes the firm
first among at least six electric vehicle Chinese startups that have set
their sights on sales in the two markets as auto sales decline at home.

Kaiyun’s selling its “Pickman” model, a pared-down form of EV with a maximum
speed of under 30 miles per hour. Kaiyun said so far it has sold around 40
of the cars to the US, mostly in California, and 30 to France, Spain, and
Sweden. Kaiyun said it aims to sell between 3,000 to 4,000 cars in the US by
the end of 2020, but said it’s “conservative” when it comes to forecasting a
figure for sales in Europe.

The starting price of the Pickman in the US is $7,999, including a 25%
import tax. It’s about the same price in Europe, where it’s subject to zero
tax. The caveat, however, is Europeans can’t drive the model on public roads
yet, and the firm needs to make modifications to the model.

“Mini-electric vehicles are more than enough to meet consumers’ daily
needs,” Wang Chao, founder of Kaiyun, told Bloomberg (paywall) in an
interview in January, when he announced the firm had approval to sell in the
US.

The category of low-speed electric vehicles, which come with cheaper
lead-acid batteries, is very popular in China, which saw nearly 1.8 million
such cars sold in 2017. That’s double the number of regular electric cars,
such as Teslas, sold in China in the same year. The firm said it sold around
4,900 units of the Pickman in China this year.

Kaiyun’s strategy is not unlike the approach of BYD, the world’s largest
electric vehicle maker (membership exclusive). BYD also isn’t selling
passenger vehicles overseas, a sector in which it would face fierce
competition from well-known brands like Tesla, and more recently Audi and
Mercedes-Benz. It has several times postponed plans to sell electric cars to
Europe and the US, but is moving along with electric buses.

Of course, Pickman can’t do everything that a bigger, gasoline-powered
pickup like the Ford F-150 can do—such as travel at a top speed of 160 km
per hour (100 miles per hour) and carry a payload of as much as 1,000 kg.
But the Pickman’s way cheaper than the F-150’s starting price of $28,000,
and can handle trips around large construction sites, plants, and farms.

The Tesla Semi all-electric battery-powered Class 8 semi-trailer truck isn’t
set to hit the road until 2021, but this early, a London-based startup has
designed a luxurious motorhome based on this beast.

The firm called Vanlifer, which designs campervans for clients all over the
world, has revealed a concept motorhome build mounted onto the back of the
Tesla Semi. Company founder Jason H. claims his Tesla Semi will be the
world’s first long-range all-electric motorhome.

He said the motorhome build will only need minimal modification to the
chassis of a Tesla Semi. The motorhome only requires the addition of
composite structure onto the semi’s back.

The Tesla Semi will have a maximum tow weight of 36 metric tons (80,000
lbs.), which is more than adequate to tote a motorhome on the back. The
truck’s enhanced Tesla Autopilot means the driver has more time to take in
the scenery rather than worrying about the driving itself, according to
Vanlifer.

Vanlifer is also taking Tesla Inc. at its word when the latter claims the
Tesla Semi won’t break down for a million miles because it’s capable of
running on two of its four motors. It’s also excited the Tesla Semi has a
drag coefficient better than that of the Bugatti Chiron mid-engine
two-seater sports car developed and manufactured by Bugatti Automobiles
S.A.S.

“Our concept Tesla Semi-Home is a six-berth with a full kitchen, living
space, toilet and all the other luxuries of high-end motorhomes and RVs
(recreational vehicles),” said Jason H.

“The Tesla Semi with enhanced autopilot and a range of up to 500 miles on a
single charge is very exciting. Here at Vanlifer, we see it as the future of
electric motorhomes, campervans and RVs.”

Jason noted the Tesla Semi’s range of 500 miles (fully loaded) makes it
ideal for motorhomes, “so you can clock up some big drive days without the
accompanying gas-guzzling guilt.”

Vanlifer said the price tag of $180,000 for the 500-mile version of the
Tesla Semi, isn’t that expensive for a large luxury motorhome.

Honda e Prototype - Dual Touchscreen Experience
]

Honda recently posted a new video detailing the dual touchscreen experience
in its all-electric Honda e.

Honda stresses that this is the dual touchscreen experience found in the
Honda e prototype, though the upcoming production version of the EV is
believed to be nearly identical to the prototype.

The brief video shows how a driver can interact with the widescreen, as the
second screen is out of reach for the driver. The demonstration shows a drag
and drop function to customize the experience and folders for various
settings.

A driver can choose to move items on the near screen over to the far screen
and back again. The video also gives a glimpse of the car’s navigation,
voice assistant, how it visualizes the charging progress, and more.

Honda released details about the car’s electric motor earlier this month. In
June, Honda released details about the electric car’s battery and platform
and mentioned 31,000 have already expressed interest in the EV.

In May, Honda started taking reservations with refundable deposits for the
Honda e in select European markets. Made for Europe and Japan, the automaker
hasn’t given any indication the Honda e will ever make its way to the US.

Here’s the full video demonstration of the e’s dual touchscreen:

With no pretension of being automakers, startups build small cars to meet
new transport demands.

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Brazilian startups intend to play a leading role in
the local production of electric vehicles, while major automakers are still
studying the feasibility of nationalization and are beginning to bring
imported models for consumer acceptance tests.

Some projects along these lines have already emerged and succumbed, but at
least three companies are beginning to place their models on the streets.
These are minicars, quads, and tricycles mainly aimed at shared
transportation, initially to serve market niches.

Gaia, with a shared assembly line in Cotia (São Paulo) and Manaus
(Amazonas); Mobilis, in Palhoça (Santa Catarina); and eiON, in Pinhais
(Paraná) do not intend to be assemblers, but technology companies with the
ability to develop sustainable, simple, and affordable products with
state-of-the-art technology.

The Gaia three-wheeler, which should reach the market by the end of the
year, is an intermediate between a motorcycle and a minicar. It has a
built-in internet chip and its own sharing App. The key is digital,
activated by a password on a smartphone. It may be charged in a standard
socket, without depending on specific infrastructure.

According to Ivan Gorski, founder of Gaia Electric Motors, the vehicle can
run 200 km with an eight-hour charge. “The average cost for this mileage is
R$8 (US$2), approximately twenty times more efficient than gasoline”. He
plans to deliver twenty to thirty units this year.

Gorski’s target audience, however, are companies wishing to use the vehicle
to provide services and deliveries, or shared use in small cities, where
services such as Uber and Cabify have failed to reach. The Gaia holds two
people and costs R$80,000. According to him, 60 percent of Gaia’s parts are
imported, including the battery set and the electric motor.

Gorski worked at UOL, Yahoo! and LinkedIn. Gaia, officially founded in 2018,
now has eight partners, went through two rounds of investment, and is now
valued at R$10 million.

Li, from Santa Catarina, wants to run in restricted areas

With three partners, mechanical engineer Mahatma Marostica founded Mobilis
and developed a pilot car in 2018 for neighborhood use — enclosed locations
such as condominiums, universities, resorts, industries, parks and golf
courses — called “Li” (the name comes from lithium, the primary raw material
for the battery).

Ten model units were sold for R$60,000 each, eight of which were delivered
earlier this year. As it runs only in private areas, the model does not
require components such as airbags and ABS brakes. The model holds two
people, is customizable, and its maximum speed is 40 km/hour. The charging
is done in any outlet, in six hours as standard and three hours as optional.
There is another option for charging in 1.5 hours.

At this stage, R$ 2.4 million have been invested with its own capital and
angel investors. “We are about to raise an investment of R$6 million for the
street version, the Li DR. The approval for the start of production should
be out in 2020,” says Marostica.

The Li will be equipped with a tag, a chip to open and close doors, which
allows tracking and booking for use by cell phone.

According to him, the goal is also to build a model for four passengers and
range options from 100 to 160 km. Prices are expected to range from R$70,000
to R$75,000. Seventy percent of the equipment is domestic, and the cell and
battery charger are imported from China, representing the other 30 percent.

Buggy Verde wants a place in Brazil’s Northeast

Part of the Fiep Incubator System (Federation of Industries of the State of
Paraná), eiON, designed by electrical engineer Milton Francisco dos Santos
Jr. less than two years ago, is initially focused on selling its Buggy
Verde, introduced in October to buggy driver cooperatives in beach tourism
locations in Brazil’s Northeast.

The company’s name is the result of the combination of the initials of the
words electric, intelligent, and online. For now, the battery of the
two-passenger vehicle is purchased from a com

The use of battery power for agricultural vehicles and machinery promises
to revolutionise the agricultural industry by lowering costs and improving
production. From battery powered large tractors to autonomous small electric
robots, battery and solar power are changing the face of agriculture.

Agriculture is under pressure to produce more food using a declining
availability of additional arable land and water resources. Mechanised
farming can improve food production in Africa, but requires energy, an
increasingly costly input to the food production process. There is a need to
control energy costs, as in any other industry, by the use of more efficient
methods and machinery.

Agriculture is going through a revolution, brought about by new technology,
moving to what is known as precision farming (PF), which uses satellite
imagery, drones, ground based sensors, GSP systems and agri-robots to
control the planting, growth and harvesting of crops. The traditional method
of crop management involves blanket application of herbicides, pesticides
and fertilizer, while PF makes use of automation and artificial intelligence
to precisely control the amounts of fertilizer, herbicide and insecticide
applied to crops, with resultant increased yield and greatly reduced use of
the above. PF also reduces the energy used by agricultural machinery by
directing action only where it is needed and focusing activities on specific
areas only.

Much of the ground based equipment used in PF has only been made possible by
the decreasing cost of storage and solar power devices, which allow small
autonomous electric powered robots to operate for long periods of time and
with reduced weight and cost. PF can be operated on a large scale without
such robots, but this restricts it to separate fields, whereas with the use
of robots, this can be applied to individual plants.

The transition to electric power in agriculture

Agriculture is energy intensive, and the use of large machinery results in
high fuel consumption. Farm machinery used for crop management
conventionally consists of diesel or petrol engine powered tractors. Energy
forms a large component of the cost of production, which is increasing.

As in many other industries, attention has been given to changing from
internal combustion engine drives to electric driven farm vehicles, and a
number of battery powered farm vehicles are now available. Electric vehicle
drive systems are well developed in the motor and industrial vehicle
industry, and the challenge has been in adapting the existing technology to
the needs of agricultural machinery. Electric driven farm vehicles are
nothing new. They were common in the 1930s but were tethered to the supply
by trailing cables. The difference is that the current generation are
battery powered.

One of the claims of the industry is that electric farm vehicles are more
energy efficient and cheaper to run than diesel powered machinery. The
critical factor is the price of electricity versus the price of diesel. The
use of electric driven vehicles is also influenced by a growing application
of own generation on farms, using solar, wind, biomass or small hydro. The
cost of own generation is decreasing, making the use of electric powered
farm vehicles more attractive.

The electric powered farm vehicle

The primary vehicle used in agriculture is a tractor, with most performing
high energy tasks using, for example, plow disks and subsoilers. This leads
to tractors being oversized for medium and low-energy demand applications,
resulting in unnecessarily high fuel consumption on lighter-duty tasks

French startup Transition-One plans to bring retrofitting to the mass
market.

About 5,000 euros ($5,600) are set to buy your 10-year-old combustion
clunker an electric makeover—and offer a cut-price way to avoid driving bans
across European cities.

French startup Transition-One has developed retrofitting technology that
adds an electric engine, batteries and a connected dashboard into older
models of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV, Volkswagen AG, Renault SA and PSA
Group for about 8,500 euros, or 5,000 euros after government subsidies in
France.

“I’m selling to people who can’t afford a brand new 20,000-euro electric
car,” founder Aymeric Libeau said in an interview aboard his first
prototype, a Renault Twingo from 2009 with an electric driving range of 180
kilometer (112 miles). “We’re turning the best-selling models across Europe
into electric cars.”

Libeau expects French and European regulator approval by the end of the year
and will start pre-orders in September to test demand.

Automakers are rushing to churn out electric cars to comply with stricter
regulations on emissions in Europe. While sales are rising, hybrid and
battery cars made up less than 3% of total sales last year as vehicle prices
remain comparatively high with shorter driving ranges than conventional
models ...

Even as the tepid uptake is set to reverse in coming years, initiatives like
Transition-One’s show the car industry is still trying to navigate a path
towards an electric future, with the risk of outright driving bans giving
birth to moonshot ideas.

“You could technically turn a handcart into an electric car—the question is,
does it make sense and how big is the effort?”

An increasing number of cities has already started to ban older diesel cars,
after the 2015 Volkswagen diesel emission-cheating scandal prompted scrutiny
of cars flouting limits. Over the next decade, many more European cities
will cut access to fossil-fuel cars altogether.

In the prototype Twingo, three battery packs are fitted in front and two in
what used to be the gas tank. The whole pack, bought from a Tesla Inc. parts
reseller, weighs 120 kilograms (265 pounds). To compare, Renault’s electric
Zoe has a 290 kilogram battery for a 210 kilometer driving range. Prices
start at around 23,000 euros excluding battery rental battery.

The transition takes less than a day, leaving the original stick shift and
gear box and installing the plug behind the hatch that drivers usually pop
open to refill the tank.

There are doubters on Libeau’s approach, and questions over how attractive a
shortened driving range will be to motorists. Markus Lienkamp, a professor
of automobile technology at the Technical University of Munich, also warns
against the risk of errors and the difficulty of obtaining regulatory
approvals for the retrofitted cars.

“You could technically turn a handcart into an electric car—the question is,
does it make sense and how big is the effort?” Lienkamp said. “My advice
would be to drive the combustion car as long as it can take, and just buy a
new electric car after, because it makes much more sense financially.”

Libeau, whose previous experiences include co-founding software company
Pentalog Group, has worked on retrofitting for two years, and tested the
method with a French business school. He is looking to raise 6 million euros
to build a factory he says would be capable of churning out as many as 4,000
vehicles next year.

Retrofitting services have so far focused on one-offs for classic cars with
a number of small companies offering a variety of conversion kits. What’s
specific with the French startup is a plan to help create a regulatory
framework rather than case-by-case permits to broadly offer the technology.

PSA Chief Executive Officer Carlos Tavares has called the idea of
retrofitting “great” while cautioning that large companies needed worldwide
regulations on emissions and safety before going down this road. “For that
to happen, first thing is: align regulations,” he said on his online show
#ACoffeeWithCarlosTavares earlier this month.

Transition-One’s solution is compatible with models including PSA’s Citroen
C1 and Peugeot 107, Fiat 500, Toyota Aygo, Twingo II and Volkswagen Polo.

Potential production car adopts pure mid-engined silhouette

Honda showed the Urban EV concept at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show, then
showed the Sports EV concept at that year's Tokyo Motor Show. Built on the
same electric platform as the Urban EV, Honda designers showed how much
classic sports car elan they could work into a diminutive package. The Urban
EV has since become the production Honda E, due on sale later this year.
Autoweek.nl recently dug up Japanese patent office images filed last
December that show a potential production version of the Sports EV. The
images show a redrawn coupe, the long hood and erect, aft-set glasshouse
giving way to a more modish, elegant line. And we'd still rock it until its
range ran out.

Styling similarities with the Honda E and the original concept remain, such
as the round headlights, bulging front fenders that arch above the hood,
wide rear haunches, and black decorative panels. Yet within the fastback
profile, the corners are much squarer, the cabin's been moved forward, and
the taillights are triangular. Along with a shorter hood, the effect is that
of a pure mid-engined silhouette, complete with what look like functional
vents ahead of the rear wheels. Assuming the dimensions aren't vastly
different from those of the show car, we're talking about a product around
the size of a Mazda MX-5 Miata. It's not the "backyard custom car feel" that
designer Makoto Harada aimed for with the concept, but it puts a lot of pert
confidence in a small footprint.

At that Tokyo show, Honda CEO Takahiro Hachigo said the chances of a
production Sport EV concept "depend on feedback from Europe and Japan."
Based on our own reading, the feedback's been outstanding, and we know Honda
plans to expand use of the Honda E's platform into other vehicle classes,
including a commercial vehicle.

Of course, patent drawings are nothing more than bookmarks notating a
particular piece of intellectual property. However, if Honda put its
35.k-kWh battery and electric motor with 148 horsepower and 221 pound-feet
of torque into the car in these images, we think we'd be looking at another
electric hit.

MG ZS EV could be a bridgehead for MG (and its parent company SAIC) to
offer EVs in Europe. An affordable price is the way to enter.

British magazine What Car? had an opportunity to spend some time with the
all-new MG ZS EV and it turns out that the MG is quite impressive.

The new family SUV that happens to be electric is probably the best MG ever
and thanks to an affordable price (see details here), plenty of features and
decent quality, it's also one of the most attractive offers on the EV
market.

"Join us in London for our first drive of the new 2020 MG ZS EV (or eZS
in other markets). MG's first electric car looks like an absolute bargain,
but in this review we'll be finding if it's a worthy alternative to cars
like the Tesla Model Y and Hyundai Kona Electric."

Among all the praises, there are some minor drawbacks revealed in this early
review (we still need to wait for full reviews later this year). For
example, the steering wheel doesn't move in and out (Nissan LEAF also
doesn't offer this feature). Another thing is a sometimes slower response of
the touchscreen/infotainment.

PUEBLA, MEXICO — Mexico might soon have its own electric car, made entirely
with Mexican talent and components. And behind it is a Mexican entrepreneur
who wants to put Mexico on the world map of designing vehicles.

His dream is to build the first 100% Mexican car. And if his plan works,
we’ll see the vehicles on the streets next year.

There’s hope that this is the start of a new auto industry in Mexico, less
dependent on foreign trade and a chance for the country’s business — and
natural — environment.
A Bloodline Full Of Speed

It’s pouring in Puebla, Mexico, the capital city of the state with the same
name. But rain won’t stop Polo Ortiz, who supervises the construction of a
car prototype in a small workshop.

“This is in our genes; it’s like a century-old tradition,” Polo said. Cars
run through the veins of his family. Like his father, he used to race cars.
And now his son, Leopoldo, is taking the tradition to the next level — by
building them.

“We are proudly a 100% Mexican,” Polo said. He is a consultant for his son’s
company, LM&TH, which plans to bring to life light, compact electric cars to
be sold by late 2020.

“Unfortunately, the Mexican governments are always looking towards the wrong
direction,” Polo said.

He said the current government is unfortunately focused on opening
refineries instead of supporting environmentally-friendly technologies.

And his son shares some of his concerns but also his faith.

The Car Of The Near Future

Leopoldo Ortiz is CEO and founder of LM&TH. He decided to pass on the
family’s passion to his daughter by naming the new car after her: Thalía.

“Lucky name for our car," Leopoldo said. “This is the first car in the
history of Mexico that we made from the design, from the first sketches, to
the production of the prototypes.”

Thalía’s birthplace, Puebla, is one of Mexico’s oldest bastions of the
automotive industry, with companies like Volkswagen and Audi. But its
significance decreased as newer plants opened in other states, like
Guanajuato.

But Leopoldo said Puebla is the only state where the industry can work on
design and manufacturing, rather than just in production lines.

“Why? Because we have the people and we have the facilities and the
resources to make that,” Leopoldo said.

LM&TH still needs to import 20% of Thalía’s components from China. And trade
agreements with the U.S. are not helping yet.

“Actually, We bought some kits from the United States, and at the end we saw
that they’re getting these kits from China,” Leopoldo recalled, chuckling.

Like in most parts of the world, electric cars in Mexico are still
unpopular. Recent data from the Mexican Association of the Auto Industry
indicate that in April only 25 electric vehicles were sold. But Leopoldo
forecasts that its boom will start in 2023, as gas prices and pollution go
up.

“We need to make something in the present, because the future it looks not
so good,” Leopoldo said.

In two months, Leopoldo will put in the Mexican market electric bikes and
tricycles. As for Thalía, LM&TH expects to start by building 30 cars per
month. The model will later develop into three versions.

Leopoldo said they plan on selling Thalía for approximately $18,000 in
Mexican large cities first, with the goal of eventually selling it online to
the rest of the world.

state of Puebla / Luis González Rodrigo Cervantes/KJZZ

A Hub For Innovation

About 10 miles from the workshop, in the historic town of Cholula, is the
office of Luis González. He is the Innovation and Design commissioner for
the state of Puebla.

“It’s the only office in the world that has a pyramid, a church and a
museum,” González said.

And all of this is true, as his office is located inside an archaeological
and historical site. Plus, it’s inside a former asylum from the early 20th
century, something he finds fitting, in a way.

“The atmosphere really promotes kind of a … crazy ideas,” González said.

His office’s goal, the commissioner said, is to help innovative and creative
companies grow and expand to the world, like LM&TH.

“We are not only like a distribution center of opportunities, we also make
the different ministers work together… which is also not very common!,”
