RE: inviting a LCD projector to a meeting

2002-01-23 Thread Ben Schorr

Robert's script is a fine choice. If you don't want to mess around with
scripting, though, and you have Outlook 2000 or later and Exchange 5.5 (you
might need SP4, I don't recall offhand) you can also do it natively.

Information for how to do it is here:

Subject: inviting a LCD projector to a meeting

Hi.. I (the intern) have been tasked with setting up company
resources (cars, laptops, projectors, etc) as Exchange items
that can be invited to a meeting. It's simple enough to make
a mailbox called Projector, but how do I have that projector
say, Ok, I'll come or Sorry I'm busy to the person
 inviting it (assuming it's FirstComeFirstServed).

I saw Robert Strong's AutoAccept tool on ExchangeCode.com,
but I wanted to get some opinions on best practices for
 resource management with exchange.

 TIA!

Subject: OWA backup error

Has anyone seen this before? I use NT-Backup to backup our Exchange
servers. We have OWA installed on the internet mail connector server. We
get this error almost daily, but some times it does work without any
problems. Backup runs as domain and exchange admin, so it should have
permission to access...I have in the past reset all permissions in that
directory, but it doesn't seem to effect anything...NT4/SP6a/5.5/SP4. thank

Do you put the Officescan info in your logon scripts as well? I have found
doing that ends the issues with pushing updates. One way or another, the
client gets it.

Well, that's coincidence. I had the same reaction yesterday, too. I still
think, though, that their Scanmail product is much that Officescan. I've
had it just stop pushing updates to some desktops for no particular reason.
So, I end up having to go to the machine and uninstall and reinstall the
product.

I run a smaller network so I let people install do some customization of
their computers, and ive found that even throwing the autopcc in the
login script will somtimes crash out on slower computers (such as mine)
during startup when your computer is loading a lot of progies at
startup.

Well, that's coincidence. I had the same reaction yesterday, too. I
still
think, though, that their Scanmail product is much that Officescan.
I've
had it just stop pushing updates to some desktops for no particular
reason.
So, I end up having to go to the machine and uninstall and reinstall the
product.

doing that ends the issues with pushing updates. One way or another, the

Public Folder Message

want an auto message to be sent from the PF telling me that there is new

Do you have any custom views based on fields in custom forms? I ran into an

value of a custom field in a form in one version of Outlook, it may not look
the same in another version of Outlook.

The public folder permissions are as follows:
Default: Custom -- ie. Users can read and view items.
Owner : full rights
The parent folder is setup exactly as the subfolders. Like I said earlier, I
am able to view all the information off of the public folder using outlook
97/2000 but not with outlook 2002.

How are the public folder permissions set up?

Your second question is not really interesting, it's just a granular setting
of permissions. You probably have None access with the Folder Visible
box checked (default permission) for the parent and have at least Reviewer
rights to the subfolder.

You can do it with a very simple event script, assuming that your PF doesn't
receive a ton of traffic. There are several sample scripts at cdolive.com
that you can use to do some cut paste programming.

2002-01-23 Thread Tom

This is an issue that Trend has known about for a while and has had a
patch out for quite some time on. It seems funny that it finaly makes
the news only because of increased scans.

Yeah, but it says the bug is fixed with a patch from Trend. I assume
everybody will be keeping their AV products up-to-date.

Still good article.

RE: Public Folder Message

2002-01-23 Thread Blunt, James H (Jim)

Chris,

1. Go to your PF Properties Administration Folder Assistant... Add
Rule...

2. Set up the rule the way you want it to process the e-mail.

I have Win2k SP2 / Ex5.5 SP4+. I have a PF called Overtime Requests.
Anyone that wants to work OT must fill out the OT Request form that I
created and published in the Organizational Forms Library. Once they fill
out the form with the required information and hit send, the PF processes
the form.

Process:
1. We have several groups within our organization. The rules look
at who sent the form and based on who sent the form, it sends out a
notification to their manager, telling them that there is an OT form in the
PF requiring their review and approval. At the same time, it sends a reply
to the originator, telling them that their manager is aware of the request
and is reviewing it.

Works like a charm!

RE: If your using Trend Mico A\V - Look at this article

2002-01-23 Thread Soysal, Serdar

Actually I really enjoy these old problems making news later on. It gives
people like us a chance to prove our god-like nature. I really love it when
the boss sees an old virus alert on CNN, runs to me in panic and I tell him
Oh that, yeah I knew about that for so many months and installed the
necessary patches so many months ago. We've nothing to worry about. The
look on their face is so priceless. It's also quite an easy way to earn
some points for your appraisal.

Oh, and, if I may add, I am a Golden God.

RE: System Manager for XP Pro?

2002-01-23 Thread Fred W. Macondray Jr.

Thanks for all the replies. I may wait until it's supported.

The reason I want to do this is less to get the Exchange System Manager as I do use
TSvcs, but to add the Exchange functionality to the Active Directory Users and
Computers that was installed by the adminpak.msi beta 3.

Anyone from MS on this list. Anyone from MS on this list and listening ? :)

Thanks All,

Fred

Ways to create distribution lists?

2002-01-23 Thread Fred W. Macondray Jr.

Hi All,

In moving our mail control to internal from an external ISP, I'm running into some
questions regarding Distribution Lists vs. Security Lists.

I've got Security Groups that I wish could double as distribution lists, but it seems
they have to be one or the other.

I'm hoping to find a way that's less cluttered than having say a group called OpsAdmin
as a security group and a distribution list called OpsAdminList.

The less I have in my directory, the better. Perhaps I just need some tips on
organizing the directory.

Thanks,
Fred

RE: Public Folder Message

2002-01-23 Thread Soysal, Serdar

Well, the following script will work if you create an agent for each new
message created.

Set objS = EventDetails.Session
Set objNM = objS.Outbox.Messages.Add
objNM.Subject = There's a new message, woohoo!
objNM.Text = Thought you migh want to know.
objNM.Recipients.Add([EMAIL PROTECTED])
objNM.Recipients.Resolve
objNM.Send
Set objNM = Nothing
Set objS = Nothing

Well, alter the subject, body and recipient address according to your needs.
Couple of things to watch out for:

1. Go to www.cdolive.com and read what scenarios are good for event script
based solutions. This is very important.
2. The notification message using an agent will be received from the mailbox
you used when you installed the script.
3. Go through this article (Q289606). You may want to install the fix as
well.

Use the Reply With Template and preaddress the message that you use as the

sender.

My other suggestion of creating an event still applies.

Chris,

1. Go to your PF Properties Administration Folder Assistant... Add
Rule...

2. Set up the rule the way you want it to process the e-mail.

I have Win2k SP2 / Ex5.5 SP4+. I have a PF called Overtime Requests. Anyone
that wants to work OT must fill out the OT Request form that I created and
published in the Organizational Forms Library. Once they fill out the form
with the required information and hit send, the PF processes the form.

Process:

RE: Public Folder Message

2002-01-23 Thread Blunt, James H (Jim)

Chris,

Quit making it harder than it is. Instead of using the Reply with
template... option, use the Forward To... option. Forward it on to
whoever you want it to go to.

I did it with the reply, and having the message sent to the original user is
not something that will be wanted. Do you have a sample script you can send
me. If not I will just go to the CDOnline site. How are things going over
there at KMart

Use the Reply With Template and preaddress the message that you use as the
template. That'll go the people you specified along with the original

Process:

Exchange does not like to play alongside others, and he will demonstrate his

Removing last Exchange 5.5 from e2k

2002-01-23 Thread Mark Peoples

Hi,

Although I have followed Q152959.. I still have an issue:
I have 2 e2k SP1 servers (one with a Internet mail connector) and 1 e5.5
SP4 server (second internet mail connector with cost=100).

The Routing Calculation Server is set to be the e2k server with the mail
connector. When I look at the routing tab in the Site Addressing
properties on e5.5 server, the more expensive SMTP conector is listed
as the SMTP route.

This is affecting inbound / outbound mail for the second e2k server who
still thinks the e5.5 server has the IMC. When I click re-calculate
routing, nothing changes. I don't think the e5.5 server is aware of the
e2k IMC...

Is it just a matter of upgrading the e5.5 server to e2k, and letting
exchange routing sort itself out?? Then removing the 2nd and more
expensive IMC?

Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated..

Thanks,
MP

Re: Exchange as WINS

2002-01-23 Thread m2web

He is totally against MS Products, specially Exchange, so much so that he
even creates DLs only on a Unix box and then Unix box sends it to individual
members (yes, his Priv is 45GB for 125 people in two months). Exchange was
made the standard platform because of all the things that it can offer
versus SendMail which they used before they were bought by us.
He wants to have as few NT servers as possible, thus WINS on Exchange. He
just informed me that he has the secondary WINS on Exchange to be one of the
WINS server at our location (West Coast, they are in East Coast) and would
not listen to me that he should have the Primary and Secondary on a WINS
server to be itself for reasons like database fragmentation and which server
really own the database etc...
Thanks for everyone who replied. I have sent to them to our CTO.

RE: Removing last Exchange 5.5 from e2k

2002-01-23 Thread Barb McDonald

Did you delete the 5.5 IMS? If not you need to and let the SMTP Servers in
EX2k take over? As long as there is a 5.5IMS in the ORG it will be the
preferred route for Internet mail. Also make sure your Firewall understands
that the E2K Server(s) are allowed to send/receive SMTP via Port 25.

Look at Q272314 and Q284148 for the detailed procedures for retiring the 5.5
server.

RE: Ways to create distribution lists?

2002-01-23 Thread Barb McDonald

You have it the wrong way round ... Groups can be Distribution Only ... ie
Email Lists OR they can be both Security and Email enabled objects. A
reason for this would be that you need to use a group to give permissions to
a public folder ... the object must be both security and mail-enabled in
order to used in this fashion.

into some questions regarding Distribution Lists vs. Security Lists.

I've got Security Groups that I wish could double as distribution lists, but
it seems they have to be one or the other.

I'm hoping to find a way that's less cluttered than having say a group
called OpsAdmin as a security group and a distribution list called
OpsAdminList.

The less I have in my directory, the better. Perhaps I just need some tips
on organizing the directory.

Thanks,
Fred

RE: Removing last Exchange 5.5 from e2k

2002-01-23 Thread Mark Peoples

Barb,
No , I didn't delete the IMS on the e5.5 server, but I have stopped the
service when recalculating routing...Didn't seem to make a difference. I
will try the articles you specified.

The firewall is OK for both IMC's on port 25.
Thanks,

MP

Did you delete the 5.5 IMS? If not you need to and let the SMTP Servers
in
EX2k take over? As long as there is a 5.5IMS in the ORG it will be the
preferred route for Internet mail. Also make sure your Firewall
understands
that the E2K Server(s) are allowed to send/receive SMTP via Port 25.

Look at Q272314 and Q284148 for the detailed procedures for retiring the
5.5
server.

Thanks,
MP

ex 5.5 -- ex 2000 connections

2002-01-23 Thread Wohlgemuth, Mike

We have an Exchange 5.5, SP4, NT4 site that we want to join a WIn2k,
Exchange 2000 server to (from a different domain) We have run forestprep
(successfully), domainprep(successfully), installed ADC (successfully) but
we are not allowed to make a CA.

We have tried with numerous accounts (the Exchange admin AND a domain
admin) but still no success. We have looked up the errors on MS and it only
says something about correct rights (which we have on both the Ex 5.5
server and the WIn2k server)

We must be missing something A two way trust? SP2 for exchange 2000?

any ideas would be appreciated

You could set a max outgoing size in the Messages section of the

That does not answer the question, however. You can use the virtual server

You can use the Windows 2000 SMTP service as a transport choice for
inter-site replication among Windows 2000 domain controllers. You can also
use it for general SMTP mail functionality. Disabling this service does not
affect the ability of Windows 2000 to use SMTP protocols for inter-site
replication or general SMTP mail functionality. The Exchange IMS makes the
service available directly to any application including Windows 2000 Active
Directory replications.

I have not able to find clear documentation on whether or not I actually
need an SMTP connector in Exchange 2000. Some of the documentation I have
indicates it is not needed, but useful if you want to limit when or at what
cost email is sent. I set one up for the move so I could adjust the cost.
Any thoughts on this? I am a little reluctant to delete it - it works.

Subject: Notes on Exchange 5.5 to new 2000 box

In case anyone might find this useful. Here are the steps I followed to move
our Exchange 5.5 SP4 to Exchange 2000 SP2 on a new box. We are a single
domain, single site, 150 users, Windows 2000 native network.

Set up Exchange 2000 box with SP2, Windows 2k SP2, any necessary patches -
join existing domain, test connectivity, move some dummy mailboxes, test
sending with Internet Mail connector.

Rehome organizational forms and Public folders

Create a full backup of 5.5 system

Run IS/DS consistency adjuster(server, properties, advanced) (Q182979)

Disable all antivirus software - stop attachment scanning on exchange 2000
side

Limit users able to login to Exchange with KB article 146764

Move users over using Active Directory Users and Computers (plan for 1
gig/hour = 6 hours) while users are not logged in (this proved accurate
estimate for us)

Rebuild recipient update services in ESM to rebuild Global address list

Create a full backup of Exchange 2000 server

Set up internet mail connector, once tested and working change to a lower
cost than the 5.5 internet mail connector

Update MX records with ISP, add MX record on internal dns server

Before removing last Exchange 5.5 server, turn off and test that all Public
folders are working and have replicated/rehomed properly.

Leave old server up for week or so, then follow instructions to remove last
exchange server in a site. Q152959

Build full text index (20% of store = size) - schedule updates - see Technet
Best Practices for Deploying Full-Text Indexing for optimization and file
locations

Switch to native mode exchange

See Technet for optimizing Exchange 2000

Prepare disaster recovery plan - Read article Mailbox recovery for Exchange
2000 Server

Run IIS lockdown tool
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q309508 (have not
done this yet... anybody out there run the new one yet on Exchange 2000?)

We have been up and running pretty well for about 6 weeks. Still some
minor/obscure issues to work out with PSS. Consequently, can some of you
Exchange 2000 admins look and see if you have active account in Active
Directory under Microsoft Exchange System Objects named SystemMailbox?
Thanks.

I just ticked the Exchange Server Information store/FirstStorage Group and
watched while 5 files and 1Gb of data transfered to the DVD-RAM. I then
checked by looking at the Restore window. Log Files, Mailbox store and
Public Folder store folders were there but each brings up 'No entries

Well you have some Exchange 2000 servers, so you have an Active Directory.
All Exchange servers can be found in an OU with the same name in Active
Directory. You can view this manually using MMC. If you require this
information to be retrieved programatically, check the Resource Kit (can't
exactly help you here).

That would not be a good idea, and not even doable. However, you can allow
relay by clients that successfully authenticate, although that opens it up

At one point usa.net servers were non-RFC compliant and would advertise as
being ESMTP ready, issue a positive acknowledgement to an EHLO command and
then barf because they hadn't received a HELO command instead.

Don't know if that's still the case, but you might check to see.

everybody will be keeping their AV products up-to-date.

Still good article.

good article, but it appears to only affect Office Scan...I wonder if Scan
Mail has the same vulnerabilities?

Hi there

If you're using Trend Micro, take a look at this article.

Thanks

RE: How can I use Outlook Express to use GAL on Exchange 2000 Server

2002-01-23 Thread Ed Crowley

Your client should be able to use LDAP to see your GAL. You are giving up
too easily.

Re: exchange discovery

2002-01-23 Thread Daniel Chenault

The easiest way would be to use a call to the directory to get this list of
all sites and all servers in those sites. This does assume, however, that
there is only one organization rather than the possibility of many that are
not officially known. There is a similar call to 2K but it goes to the AD
instead. It's documented in MSDN.

hello iam working on a project where i need to discover all the exchange
servers(both 2000 and 5.5) in the whole network. i tried out this by
querying to MX records on DNS
but this is not enough bcoz MX records give only the server names listed.
can anyone guide me the way where i can find all the servers on the
network
 like
broadcasting a RPC call on to the network for some services advertised by
 the exchange servers

 raghava

TO:CC:

2002-01-23 Thread Irfan Malik

Dear List,

Does someone know a way to restrict users to add email addresses in TO
or CC field not more than, lets say 15 addresses.

Regards,
Irfan.

RE: CC:

2002-01-23 Thread Sander Van Butzelaar

In Exchange 2000 you can limit the number of recipients on the
Properties/Messages page of your virtual SMTP connector. That would mean
the total number of recipients per message, not per TO: and per CC:

RE: Invisible PF mail address after mixed to native mode

2002-01-23 Thread Jang Man

Since I didn't get any feedback, is this question so trivial or have I encountered
something unusual and is time to call PSS?

Subject: Invisible PF mail address after mixed to native mode

Morning,

Exchange 2000 SP2, single site/server.

I've changed mode from mixed to native today, because migration from 5.5 is long over.
Now in System Manager half of tabs are missing on folders, which were migrated from
5.5 system, those created on Ex2000 are ok. No big problem, but e-mail tab is also
missing, althou folders have SMTP addresses. When I Mail enable the folder, all tabs
are visible, but no e-mail addresses there, until they are populated according to
policy.

But these are new mail addresses like:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]

[EMAIL PROTECTED] is already valid address for this folder and it works. But
this one is not visible! I want to get those valid SMTP addreses to be visible again.
How?

tnx,
