What version of Windows/SP level are you on? If Windows NT 4 sp5 then there
is a memory leak problem resolved with SP6?

We'll apply service pack 4 on Exchange then monitor it. If that don't work
we'll put a newer version of Norton.

P.S.
Do you have to uninstall the old version when installing the new version of
NAV?

And some old SW. Get to SP4 and I may be wrong, but isnt that a rather old
 version of Norton as well?

We currently run Exchange 5.5 SP3. We have installed NAV for
Excahnge Version 1.5.2 The server has 1 gig of RAM. Recently we have
been experiencing and issue in task manager. The memory allocated for
NAVeAP.exe is very hightotaling almost all of the memory for the
server. It usually is in the 900 meg range then the server begins to
run VERY slow. Also when you look in Task Manager it is listed twice
(NAVeAP.exe)The second one totaling about half the memory allocated of the
first. I only have about 250 users with email accounts and by all
accounts the server is not hit very hard.

When rebooting the server everything seems ok for a day or so but then
the memory allocated shoots up very high when a virus is detected and
the server does a scan, when finished the server never reclaims the
memory used and within a week I am more than likely forced to again
reboot the server to reclaim the memory.

 Thanks in Advance.

RE: Doc bugs in Exchange SDK?

2002-06-18 Thread Siegfried Weber

1. I think there is a small doc bug because file://./backofficestorage
will not return a lost of organizations but the SMTP mail domain set in
the Default Recipient Policy.
2. As the doc states a directory listing will return those things. Not
ExOLEDB or MSDAIPP.DSO with ADO. It's a simple file based directory
listing the SDK is talking about (a dir on the evil M: drive).

In the Exchange SQL (wss.chm) it mentions in a section called File
URL
 Namespace

Also, a directory listing at the file://./backofficestorage level
will
return a list of organizations. A directory listing at the
file://./backofficestorage/domainName will return the list of top
level
folders for the specified domain or organization, including the static
MBX string which represents private mailboxes.

I am able to connect to mailboxes, inboxes, public folders,
essentially to
any Exchange resource using exoledb (or letting URL binding figure it
out
itself), but I can't get this to work.

Is this a doc bug? Has anyone got it to work?

RE: Change site and organization names in exch 5.5

2002-06-18 Thread Kulwinder

I agree, Move Server Wizard is the tool that you need to preform this, but
take a CSV export of all your accounts using all the headers available and
a offline backup copy of the DB's. (MSW will create all these CSV files
for you anyway i.e. one for DL's, users, CR's and all people who have a
secondarty proxy addresses). once the MSW is done, just manually import
these CSV files. THe DL's will need to be modified abit to match the new
org and just add the old x500 addresses so that old mail doesnt bounce
back.

Hope this helps.

Kulwinder

The Move Server Wizard is what you're looking for and will do what you want
(essentially you'll be unloading the Exchange IS and DS databases and
reloading them with the new names). I think it's on a utils subdirectory on
the Exchange SP4 upgrade cd. Or maybe sp2? - I'd look for you but I got
RIF'd a couple of months ago and don't have access to the cd's. There is a
50-60 page Word doc of planning info and options and things you need to be
aware of to run it; it is complete and very good - read every word before
 you do anything.

I think MSW was introduced in SP2 and may be on that cd, but I would take
the server to sp4 first. If you have any problems and have to call MS,
they'll be much more helpful if you're at current sp.

MS supposedly had a wizard for this but I cannot locate it on their site.

Unwanted OOO auto replies to the list members

2002-06-18 Thread Siegfried Weber

I'm not going to start another discussion about turning OOO replies
generally on to the Internet or not [1].

I just got three OOO replies from people I don't know, with instructions
to contact people I never heard and I just want to let all list members
know that they should not consider me as rude if I refrain from replying
to people who ever in their life had OOO to the list turned on. The
reason is that the new rule [2] created here will delete such OOO
messages and put those people into a killfile to keep all mailboxes in
this organization clean of such unwanted garbage.

[1] I personally have a list of clients I have turned it on but not
generally and I think this is a good policy
[2] It is not an Outlook rule per se but just a server-side filter on
the originator address

RE: Allocation Unit (Cluster) Size Question

2002-06-18 Thread Chris Jordan

This topic seems to arise every other year or so since early in Exchange
4.0. There is a heated debate on e-mail, with no-one really proving
anything. Then it all goes quiet.

At least this time we seem to have two valid approaches for those that want
to bother. A book by Curt Aubley and a website at Tricord.

I agree with Ed. I would like someone with more time than most of us have,
go out and investigate this in a real-world situation. Then report back
here, there and everywhere (MEC) to let the rest of us know whether we were
right or not in not worrying about it.

Cheers, Chris

Actually, my boss prefers that I get the most out of the money he spends
on hardware and software. When I ask a group of knowledgeable folks a
question concerning a little documented but potentially useful way to
increase system performance, my boss sees that as a useful expenditure
of my time. Trading shots with someone who has indicated she really
doesn't know the answer probably would not meet his idea 'useful
expenditure of time', but he will probably get over it.

If performance is really an issue maybe you should consider different
hardware configurations. For instance, RAID 0+1 instead of RAID5, use
more disks in your RAID array to spread the data access, faster disks,
higher end controllers with more R/W cache, etc.

To worry about negligible performance (probably .01%) increases while
investing actual productive time probably means you need your boss to
assign you more work. Unless, of course the time you spend measuring all
the differences in performance while tweaking your system with
different configurations actually translates to no extra cost.

Exchange writes to the database in 4k pages. This being the case, does
it not make sense to format database drives in 4k Allocation Units
(clusters)? And beyond that, since my RAID controller gives me the
ability to control the stripe size, shouldn't make this 4k also? Get
everyone (database, OS and
hardware) in 4k harmony, so to speak.

On a similar track regarding transaction logs, if we have valid
information as to the average size of messages in our system, would
there be a performance boost by configuring the transaction log drive to
use clusters and stripes close to (but a little bigger) that the average
message size?

Or, do I have no clue as to how these things work (always a
possibility)?

Thanks . . .

RE: SMTP Connector for Internet Mail

I can't install it in another site, they all are remote sites. I understand

Install the IMC on another server in the 5.5 site, forward all messages to
your smtp connector and do a little mx magic. In other words, set up the
smtp connector as a relay host for your internal network. Otherwise, yes,
you will need to go into mixed mode.

Dangit. I don't know what key I hit.

Anyway,

dumpel -f c:\scratch\fred.txt -l system|application -m /youreventsource/ -e

if not errorlevel 1 /your command-line mailer commands/

Exchange mailbox? I know there is MIS 2002, but it requires a AD which
I don't have. I also looked at the Infowave software, but it's taking a
over week to talk to Pre sales people.

I am looking for a software that will work with Pocket PC, Palm, etc.

Thank you in advance,

Brian

RE: Outllook Msg

2002-06-18 Thread Joe Pochedley

Was the message sent in (shudder) HTML format? If so, then you need to
replace MLANG.DLL from the original Win98/Win2000 install... There's a Q
article about this somewhere on MS's site, but I don't know the number off
the top of my head.. MLANG.DLL from IE6 beta causes problems with HTML
messages in Outlook 2000 (supposedly this was fixed in the release version
of IE6, but I've run into the problem with the release/IEAK version of IE6
too, not just the beta as Microsoft suggests)... In a few odd instances,
replacing MLANG.DLL with the original version caused Outlook not to be able
to open any messages, so I needed to restore the partially functional
MLANG.DLL... Haven't found a fix for those odd cases yet (anyone help with
that one?)..

FWIW, next time please supply more information about OL/Exch versions,
symptoms, etc since my reply is based on many assumptions and may not help
you at all...

message and the person in the TO line recieved the whole message. Does
anyone know what would cause this.

I think you are on the right track. If you do anything different, add more

BTW, With 3GB you will need to use the boot.ini switch /3GB, which requires
windows 2000 advance server. Otherwise, your apps (Exchange) will only get
2GB

I think you are on the right track. If you do anything different, add more
RAM.

BTW, With 3GB you will need to use the boot.ini switch /3GB, which requires
windows 2000 advance server. Otherwise, your apps (Exchange) will only get
2GB

i have some whitepapers from microsoft on how to set up the server with
that many users but they dont really get into details. any help is

RE: Looking for something like MIS 2002

2002-06-18 Thread Holt, Miles

I agree, and their server software is decent to install and reliable. You can have my
RIM when you take it from my cold dead hands. These have saved our
company a bundle by having faster communications on everything from network outages to
new sales leads. I can't recommend them enough.

One thing to keep in mind is if you are already a email centric company, go for the
bigger 957 handhelds, the larger display makes a big difference.
Cingular has em for $299 a pop now (which is their going ebay rate).

Can anyone recommend a software to allow wireless PDAs to access
Exchange mailbox? I know there is MIS 2002, but it requires a AD
which I don't have. I also looked at the Infowave software, but it's
taking a over week to talk to Pre sales people.

I am looking for a software that will work with Pocket PC, Palm, etc.

 Thank you in advance,

RE: New Exchange 2000 Install

With only one set of spindles for information store, there is no performance
benefit to be had from multiple storage groups or databases.

If you have a set of mailboxes that have differing recoverability
requirements, you might consider making them a separate storage group.

That's not entirely true I think. Even if all databases have the same
recoverability requirements there is potential savings of restoration time
in using multiple databases or storage groups if just one edb fails. :)

RE: Veritas Netbackup error on MSX 5.5

2002-06-18 Thread Ed Crowley

Yup, even in that little backward town. It had four radio stations and
a Tee Vee station even!

I was shocked that when I arrived there in 1973 they still had
five-digit dialing for in-town phones, and if you wanted to call
Guadalupe or Los Alamos you had to dial the operator and ask for the
number. Our phone number was WEllington 7-7032. If you bought
touch-tone service, your touch-tone phone invoked a dialer--you could
hear the dialing clicks on the line! Yes, we've all heard of this, but
I'm talking about 1973! We had finished sending moon rockets by then!

Gee! No, GTE!

KUHL is a radio station in Santa Maria, California, by the way. They

The open files agent will back it up. ;)

The Exchange Agent is installed, but now I am not sure about the Open
Files Agent. It was suppose to be installed, but some of the work that
was done by outside company has been questionable.

like i was saying from the beginning of this discussion arcserve is not
the way to go for exchange backups but still did you guys have the
exchange agent installed for arcserver if you did not arcserve will skip
the priv.edb as it is in use.

I wouldn't characterize that advantage as a performance benefit.

Creating two or more storage groups with that configuration could
actually reduce performance since the two would be competing for the
 same log drive.

That's not entirely true I think. Even if all databases have the same
recoverability requirements there is potential savings of restoration
time in using multiple databases or storage groups if just one edb
 fails. :)

2002-06-18 Thread Darren Sykes

Alan,

In my opinion, the best resource for CDO programming is MSDN.
If you're attempting to modify your Auto Registration application, you
should find c++ examples which will do everything you require, from
creating mailboxes to setting permissions on MSDN.
I know it sounds like a cop out, but I've written a similar system in VB
using nothing but that and www.cdolive.com for reference.

I'm specifically interested in using CDOEXM to manage mailboxes

RE: New Exchange 2000 Install

2002-06-18 Thread Ed Crowley

You should never have the logs for more than one storage group on a
single physical drive. You can use the same RAID set for multiple
stores' databases, but because storage groups have separate sets of log
files, you could take a performance hit by sharing a physical drive
between two or more storage groups.

In your case, I think you could justify two storage groups for 2,000
users, but that, of course, depends on usage patterns. I think that if
you wanted to implement two storage groups, however, you would
absolutely require an additional RAID-1 pair for the other set of logs,
and I think you would seriously want to consider another RAID-5 for the
second set of databases.

I wouldn't characterize that advantage as a performance benefit.

Creating two or more storage groups with that configuration could
actually reduce performance since the two would be competing for the
 same log drive.

RE: New Exchange 2000 Install

2002-06-18 Thread Neil Hobson

I would, otherwise you'll have another set of transaction log files.
Also, if a user on database A in storage group A sends a message to a
user on database B in storage group B, then you've got copies of the
message in two databases and two sets of log files. With 2000 users on
a single server, space can diminish quickly.

The trade off with multiple databases is reduced efficiency in storage
requirements, since single instance storage is per-database, against the
theory that you could recover the database of a portion of your users
more quickly than if they were all on one database. Backing up and
restoring a single huge database could be a problem if you've got strict
SLA windows.

understand how it works, etc.

for the college that i work for, they want me to deploy a exchange

but
   money

this is the hardware i have to work with. i have a dell 6400 with

dual PIII 1.0ghz xeons with 2 megs of cache.

Why would an email?

2002-06-18 Thread Mitchell Mike

Good afternoon,

Outlook 98 Exchange 5.5 sp4

I have a user that claims they are not receiving eMAILs from one person
outside the organization. I emailed that
outside person and asked for a reply. I cc: my Yahoo account so I could see
if I was having networking problems.
I have checked this person's mailbox and there is no messages from this
outside person.

The outside person received my eMAIL and replied to all. My Yahoo account
got the reply just like that but my
Outlook account finally got the message after 4 1/2 hours... WOW. What is
up with that? I have checked
my queues and nothing is backed up. I can send eMAIL to my Yahoo account
from my Outlook account and vice versa
and the messages are received on a timely bases. I have checked my logs and
see nothing strange.

Has anyone had a similar problem? Please help me out.

RE: Why would an email?

2002-06-18 Thread Ed Esgro

MX record pointing to your mail server possibly. I had this exact problem
only I was trying to send to an organization. Some mail would go through,
some mail would fail. Turned out my ISP DNS servers had two MX records for
the recipient and one of them was wrong. It only happened on this one
particular domain. It is possible the organization in question for you has a
problem on their DNS finding your correct MX server. After doing some
recursive queries it is finally finding your MX server. Just a thought.

Subject: Relay SMTP

Hello,

I have an Exchange 5.5 SP4 server. The server is primarily the connector
server in my site. It has no mailboxes on it. I have the server setup to
not relay smtp message. The option DO NOT REROUTE INCOMING SMTP MAIL
is selected. However it is still allowing SMTP relay messages. I have
re-installed the service pack, restarted the server and it still allows
relay. Is there something I am missing? Any info would be appreciated.

Thank you

Ed

Re: MailBox LIMIT PROBLEM

2002-06-18 Thread Karen McLaughlin

All folders are subject to quotas in Exchange, not just InBox. Check
Sent Items and Deleted Items as these tend to not get cleaned out
regularly.

Clients can also get folder sizes by viewing the properties of
their mailbox in Outlook and clicking on Folder Size. That'll
clue them in on where to start cleaning.

They have files in their deleted items or sent items, probably with huge attachments.
Make them set their options to Empty deleted items upon exiting, and get them to
delete those big attachments out of their sent items.

RE: Relay SMTP

2002-06-18 Thread Durkee, Peter

If you have your IMC set to not allow any relaying, it doesn't give you the relaying
prohibited response as you'd expect, but goes much further into the process before it
stops you. This is covered in
http://www.exchangeadmin.com/Articles/Index.cfm?ArticleID=7696

But I see from Chris and Ed's messages that it's not Exchange anyway.

Do you have a recipient update service defined for the AD domain? Did

Then go run the folder size thingy on the whole mailbox (start with Outlook

It only takes one big item you know.

Did they close their mail client fully and then open it again? You've

Wait a minute. That's not right. I do this too - I have a DL that only
ONE person can send to, and they are external to my org. I created a CR
and put that on the Allowed list. I know that it works because I have
had complaints from other chuckleheads trying to use the list, and it's
HUGE, so I don't allow anyone else to use it.

Yes, the CR is the one I'm trying to send from (My home account).

So are you saying that I cannot send to a Distribution List from my home
account even if I've created a Custom Recipient and added it to the
'allowed' list?

If this is the case, what options do I have for allowing someone not
within my org to send to a DL? The DL must have delivery restrictions
in place, so I can't simply allow everyone to send to it.

Thanks for your help.

Oops, my fault. You're right. You even can't do a dir on
file://./backofficestorage/mydomain.

As for the question why either file:\\.\ or file://./ works I believe
it's because even IE can handle that ;-)

I think this is just a doc bug as you mentioned. You can send your
feedback to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

 1) I will try point one out at home.

 2) But if you are claiming I can do a simple dir
file://./backofficestorage/DomainName this won't work from the command
prompt either. It only works if you try to programmatically access it
through ADO (or someother access method) which is smart enough in most
cases to launch the appropriate provider unless you specify the
provider
 using the connection object.

BTW - you can programmatically access most items using
 file://./backofficestorage/DomainName/MBX/Inbox/ etc, or
 file://./backofficestorage/DomainName/Public Folders/

 but you can also use

 file:\\.\backofficestorage\DomainName\MBX\Inbox\ etc, or
 file:\\.\backofficestorage\DomainName\Public Folders\

as well. I have yet to find a difference between the two. Can you
 comment on this.

 Thanks for your help.

  1. I think there is a small doc bug because
file://./backofficestorage
will not return a lost of organizations but the SMTP mail domain set
in
  the Default Recipient Policy.
  2. As the doc states a directory listing will return those things.
Not
ExOLEDB or MSDAIPP.DSO with ADO. It's a simple file based directory

I think I found my answer, \\ if filepath, // is ExOleDb path.

If you can stand one more question on this topic of URL binding

I can do
file://./backofficestorage/domain.mydomain.com/MBX/inbox/
file://LocalHost/backofficestorage/domain.mydomain.com/MBX/inbox/
file://ServerName/backofficestorage/domain.mydomain.com/MBX/inbox/

but can I do

file://RemoteServerName/backofficestorage/domain.mydomain.com/MBX/inbox/
where I'm trying to connect to a remote Exchange server in the same domain
assuming I have permission and all, and that the mailbox I am trying to
access is homed on RemoteServername?

I was wondering if anyone else is seeing some new type of Spam coming in
from APNIC? This Spam is forging the return address to internal users and
they all have the same subject/content, so they seem to be related.

LDAP DN Question

2002-06-18 Thread Martin, Jon

In our current NT/Exchange 5.5 system, user display names are formatted as
'lastname, firstname'. In testing Win2k/Exch2k upgrades I noticed, using
ADSI Edit, that the LDAP distinguished name for users ends up 'lastname\,
firstname', with the slash thrown in to escape the comma character.
There are references on various software development newsgroups that this
slash in the DN occasionally causes headaches for developers. Has anyone
seen this slash in the DN cause a problem in either Exchange or other
applications that depend on LDAP?

Check Top of Information Store, people always seem to put mail in here for
some reason. It won't show up when you check folder size, you have to do an
advanced find. Try dragging a message to your Outlook Today - [Mailbox -
your name], and then do an advanced find for this message and you'll see
what I mean.

Actually, it does show the folder size.
Its listed above the subfolders dialog box: Folder Size: nk
Total Size (Fld + SubFldr) : nnnK

Another way to easily get to it is to uncheck the Show Home Page box under
the Properties/Home Page tab for the Outlook Today folder.

RE: MailBox LIMIT PROBLEM

2002-06-18 Thread Andy David

Im not sure what you mean by breakdown. The Folder Size *is* the size of
the folder in the question. So if you are looking at the properties of
Outlook Today folder (i.e. The top of the Information Store) , that is its
size. Unchecking that box should remove the Outlook Today pane and restore
the regular folder view and allow you to easily see any emails that may be
in that folder.

RE: MailBox LIMIT PROBLEM

2002-06-18 Thread Bryon Barkley

My meaning of breakdown is, when you go into the properties of the Outlook
Today - [Mailbox -
your name] and click on folder size, you see a breakdown of every folder
listed under it. The top of Information store is not one of them. A quick
test will prove my point. Verify the folder size of your Outlook Today -
[Mailbox - your name], now create a new message with a known size attachment
and send it to yourself. Check the folder size again and it should have
increased by the size of the new message. Now, take that message and drag
it onto your Outlook Today - [Mailbox - your name], the entire mailbox size
will remain the same, however, the size of your inbox folder will be
decreased by the size of the message you moved. You will not see where this
message has been moved to because you can't look at the Top of Information
Store and the only way to see if there are some messages there, is to do an
advanced find.

It has been my experience, that when users complain about having a full
mailbox and swear they are under the limit, I check for messages in their
Outlook Today - [Mailbox - your name]and walla, they their are.
