Re: Organizing Public Folders

2002-09-20 Thread Mark Rowlands

Kelley, Jason said :

We are planning to deploy public folders in our local site but we also
want to expand to our remote sites which include users who are overseas.

I'm curious as to how people organize their public folder hierarchy and
how they determine where a public folder is homed. On Fri September 20 2002

07:23, Ed Crowley replied:

It would really depend on your organization. Also, it doesn't make
sense to replicate content to remote sites that won't use it.

Mark idly wondered:

is there any way to tell how often particular public folders are accessed and
from where in order to assist with this decision making process?

Undeliverables

2002-09-20 Thread Andrea Coppini

Hi,

How do I configure a mailbox to be the 'postmaster' mailbox (ie. Any
e-mail destined to one of the local domains where the user is not found
is sent to mailbox A.)

I found Q324021, but looks complex, prone to errors, and (I think) will
need to be modified anytime we add/remove local domains from the exch.
Server.

Any ideas?

When a user delete's items in OL/Exch does the Exchange system log this

Does it log that fact that a user would then empty the deleted items?
Does it log the fact that the items where recovered from the retention?
What log's might I look at for this info?

If you want it more sophisticated than that, set up a freeware post

UDP port probe after moving mailboxes to new 5.5 Server.

2002-09-20 Thread Pfefferkorn, Pete (PFEFFEPE)

Exchange 5.5 SP4

We just installed a new Exchange 5.5 server under Windows 2000 and are
moving mailboxes onto the new system. I've had a few users who are running
blackice on the desktop that are now stating that their accounts are
receiving a UDP probe from the new mail system and they are wondering why
that is occurring. I thought maybe it's something to do with new mail
notification, but I don't understand why it would not have occurred on the
old systems. I should state that the old server is running NT 4.0 versus
2000 for the new box.

SO I will read into this that...It is logged as you say in the transaction

thanks

P.S. I hope these only posted once as I only posted them once...But i see
there been a few weird thing going with the e-mail otu part of the list.

RE: UDP port probe after moving mailboxes to new 5.5 Server.

2002-09-20 Thread Hunter, Lori

I've heard nothing good about black ice. Most people I know run zone alarm.
What changes when you turn black ice off?

Exchange 5.5 SP4

We just installed a new Exchange 5.5 server under Windows 2000 and are
moving mailboxes onto the new system. I've had a few users who are running
blackice on the desktop that are now stating that their accounts are
receiving a UDP probe from the new mail system and they are wondering why
that is occurring. I thought maybe it's something to do with new mail
notification, but I don't understand why it would not have occurred on the
old systems. I should state that the old server is running NT 4.0 versus
2000 for the new box.

AW: UDP port probe after moving mailboxes to new 5.5 Server.

2002-09-20 Thread Mikko Pludra

Hi,
sounds like a name resolving issue to me. check the blackice logs whether the traffic
originates from UDP 53. My guess is that you have DNS running on your Windows2000
server, which you hadn't under NT.
What's the point of running PFs in the net if you have a firewall protecting your
network? are your users afraid of internal attacks?

regards,

Mikko Pludra

You could start by reading a description of what klez actually does, paying
special attention to the bit about forging emails from totally innocent
people who have nothing to do with the virus infection.

 Exchange 5.5 SP4

We just installed a new Exchange 5.5 server under Windows 2000 and are
moving mailboxes onto the new system. I've had a few users who are
 running
blackice on the desktop that are now stating that their accounts are
receiving a UDP probe from the new mail system and they are wondering why
that is occurring. I thought maybe it's something to do with new mail
notification, but I don't understand why it would not have occurred on the
old systems. I should state that the old server is running NT 4.0 versus
 2000 for the new box.

I'm curious as to how people organize their public folder

By region then by functional group? Or strictly by functional

RE: It all started with a lie - Q313819

2002-09-20 Thread Webb, Andy

I always use a script to create accounts using a combination of ADSI and
CDOEXM. And I populate the msExchAccountControl property in the
process. With one little script, you can even go back to using your old
CSV file format for creating things.

There's a perl sample at http://www.swinc.com/resource/scripts.htm and
there are WSH samples around in several places too (what used to be the
Compaq ActiveAnswers site for one, CDOLive also had one, the newsgroup
archives have several).

So, I write this to test the waters and see how others have managed this
issue -

For many years, going back to 4.0, we used CSV files to
create/manage/delete mailboxes within Exchange and this worked well.
Then comes along Exchange 2000, which with it's integration of Active
Directory and the requirement to use LDIFDE. Ok, no problem I can learn
new tools and I learn the silly new LDIF import format and I make it do
what I want it to do - mailbox enable an existing AD account. All is
well until a few weeks following the mailbox enabling of the accounts,
our users discover access to public folders (along with free/busy,
off-line address book, etc) can not be had. A call to Microsoft
produces the answer that, the attribute of msExchUserAccountControl had
not been properly populated into AD. Microsoft writes a script for us
that uses CDOEXM to re-set the permissions and while this does resolve
the problem for existing users it doesn't resolve the on-going problems.
So, Microsoft transferred me between a few groups (it's hard I guess to
know what is what when you've got half of your mail system managed by
another non-communicative group - Active Directory support) where I
landed with an LDIFDE support engineer. This engineer then proceeded to
explain that it was not possible to create mailbox enabled AD accounts
with LDIFDE and pointed me to an article Q324353 [XADM: Users Cannot
Access Public Folders or Delegate Mailboxes on a Separate Server] which
states: If you want to use LDIFDE/ADSI to create users, Microsoft
recommends that you use LDIFDE/ADSI to create only the user accounts,
and then use Active Directory Users and Computers to create the
mailboxes. to which I replied that Microsoft does support it and the
answer can be found in Q313819 - [HOW TO: Create Mailbox-Enabled
Account Using LDIFDE in Exchange 2000 Server] and after a bit of
discussion Microsoft decided that it really sucks. It all seems to
boil down to the fact that no one knows how the encoding of
msExchUserAccountControl is done (in PSS that is) and without the
ability to set that attribute at creation time, the RUS does not
properly setup the account and Microsoft has no intentions to support
this, even with the Q article on how to do it.

So, my question? Simple - has anyone managed to use LDIFDE to create
and mailbox enable or just to mailbox enable an existing account in AD
and had it work properly, namely the use of public folders?

I don't know about others that have a long history with Exchange but, do
some of you feel that Exchange has made some real steps backward from
the functionality that Exchange 5.5 had? And a word of warning to those
still on 5.5 - if it aint' broken, don't fix it.

Thanks,
david moore

RE: It all started with a lie - Q313819

2002-09-20 Thread Phillips, Alan

Are we talking about the right attribute here?

msExchUserAccountControl is documented and controls locking out the account
until the Recipient Update Service has populated the mail address attributes.

The LDIFDE problem, discussed in Q324353, is that this method does not set the
msExchMailboxSecurityDescriptorAttribute for the user object before the mailbox
is created; if this is not done Exchange cannot propogate permissions into the
store.

Creating with CDOEXM does this correctly.

Q304935 has more on this attribute and how to programatically set it to correct
the LDIFDE problem; and somewhere in one of these or a linked KB article is the
flat statement that the *only* way to create a mailbox programatically is with
CDOEXM.

5.5 had? And a word of warning to those still on 5.5 - if it
 aint' broken, don't fix it.

RE: UDP port probe after moving mailboxes to new 5.5 Server.

2002-09-20 Thread Pfefferkorn, Pete (PFEFFEPE)

UDP ports 1923, 1068, 1087. Looks as if it might be random ports. We don't
have DNS service enabled on the 2000 server.

Hi,
sounds like a name resolving issue to me. check the blackice logs whether
the traffic originates from UDP 53. My guess is that you have DNS running on
your Windows2000 server, which you hadn't under NT.
What's the point of running PFs in the net if you have a firewall protecting
your network? are your users afraid of internal attacks?

Exchange 5.5 SP4

We just installed a new Exchange 5.5 server under Windows 2000 and are
moving mailboxes onto the new system. I've had a few users who are running
blackice on the desktop that are now stating that their accounts are
receiving a UDP probe from the new mail system and they are wondering why
that is occurring. I thought maybe it's something to do with new mail
notification, but I don't understand why it would not have occurred on the
old systems. I should state that the old server is running NT 4.0 versus
2000 for the new box.

Exmerge fails on import

2002-09-20 Thread Allison M . Wittstock

Hello,

I am using Exmerge for the first time with Exchange 2000.

I exported some mailboxes to PSTs and copied the files to my new server. On

What I thought I had to do was just enable send as and receive as for the
Administrator for the mailbox stores. In the Allow, both are ticked, and in
the Refuse, its ticked and greyed out.

What else do I need to do to get this to work?

Thanks,

PKI considerations

2002-09-20 Thread Morrison, Gordon

I am looking at adding PKI functionality to my network and am curious as to anyone
else's experience with the performance impact of it in a production environment. When
I added a CA to my lab, suddenly all of my servers were grabbing certs off of it, and
presumably using them. I would expect this to cause some performance hit, but haven't
been able to find anything giving me any kind of guide as too how much of a impact
this might make on CPU and bandwidth. Has anyone run across a document with this type
of information or have this information from their own experience?

Thanks

/Gordon

The IS will not start after the restore. Perhaps I made some
error while following the DR white paper and I am getting
ready to uninstall Exchange and start over. Should this
procedure be able to work or will it only work if the O/S,
Exch Ver and SP are the same

 Thanks

RE: It all started with a lie - Q313819

2002-09-20 Thread Andrey Fyodorov

I think I used LDIFDE to create mail-enabled user accounts... I haven't heard
complaints from them but I am not sure if they are using PFs.

I also have created a lot of users with CSVDE and everything seems to be OK there.
Actually CSVDE is my preferred method for CREATING users and I have created way more
users with CSVDE than LDIFDE. At least CSVDE uses CSV files that are easy to parse and
manipulate.

I mostly user LDIFDE to MODIFY existing users.

LDIFDE really sucks IMO. Every time I need to create an LDIFDE text file, I have to
use Search and Replace function of Microsoft Word. I'd say it made me an export in
MSWord search and replace. :)

Subject: It all started with a lie - Q313819

So, I write this to test the waters and see how others have managed this issue -

For many years, going back to 4.0, we used CSV files to create/manage/delete mailboxes
within Exchange and this worked well. Then comes along Exchange 2000, which with it's
integration of Active Directory and the requirement to use LDIFDE. Ok, no problem I
can learn new tools and I learn the silly new LDIF import format and I make it do what
I want it to do - mailbox enable an existing AD account. All is well until a few
weeks following the mailbox enabling of the accounts, our users discover access to
public folders (along with free/busy, off-line address book, etc) can not be had. A
call to Microsoft produces the answer that, the attribute of msExchUserAccountControl
had not been properly populated into AD. Microsoft writes a script for us that uses
CDOEXM to re-set the permissions and while this does resolve the problem for existing
users it doesn't resolve the on-going problems. So, Microsoft transferred me between
a few groups (it's hard I guess to know what is what when you've got half of your mail
system managed by another non-communicative group - Active Directory support) where I
landed with an LDIFDE support engineer. This engineer then proceeded to explain that
it was not possible to create mailbox enabled AD accounts with LDIFDE and pointed me
to an article Q324353 [XADM: Users Cannot Access Public Folders or Delegate Mailboxes
on a Separate Server] which states: If you want to use LDIFDE/ADSI to create users,
Microsoft recommends that you use LDIFDE/ADSI to create only the user accounts, and
then use Active Directory Users and Computers to create the mailboxes. to which I
replied that Microsoft does support it and the answer can be found in Q313819 - [HOW
TO: Create Mailbox-Enabled Account Using LDIFDE in Exchange 2000 Server] and after a
bit of discussion Microsoft decided that it really sucks. It all seems to boil down
to the fact that no one knows how the encoding of msExchUserAccountControl is done (in
PSS that is) and without the ability to set that attribute at creation time, the RUS
does not properly setup the account and Microsoft has no intentions to support this,
even with the Q article on how to do it.

So, my question? Simple - has anyone managed to use LDIFDE to create and mailbox
enable or just to mailbox enable an existing account in AD and had it work properly,
namely the use of public folders?

I don't know about others that have a long history with Exchange but, do some of you
feel that Exchange has made some real steps backward from the functionality that
Exchange 5.5 had? And a word of warning to those still on 5.5 - if it aint' broken,
don't fix it.

Thanks,
david moore

RE: Exmerge fails on import

2002-09-20 Thread Allison M . Wittstock

Outlook Express...

OK Now I am thinking I might need Outlook 2000? Wasn't there a thread in this
list a week or so ago which discussed not installing Outlook onto the Exchange
server itself? Or am I dreaming things?

So if I install OL 2000 you reckon it will work?

Well, it certainly won't work without it. ;0 Outlook and exmerge could also
be installed on a non-exchange server.

RE: Exmerge fails on import

2002-09-20 Thread Mellott, Bill

I seem to remember for exch55 that installing any version of OL on the exch
server = BAD...unless if you really had too... you installed OL first then
installed exch..

It was something about OL over writting the mapi32.dll? of the exch server
with the OL version or something like that.

Exchange 5.5 Exchagne 2000 calendar objects

2002-09-20 Thread Walker, Heath

We are running Exchange 2000 sp2 across the board internally. Our users
(Outlook 2000) interact w/ an external organization that's running
Exchange 5.5 (not sure what sp rev.). When meeting requests are made by
the user on Exchange 2000 server the request is received by the Exchange
5.5 recipient as a standard message object. The destination user does
not get benefit of the accept/decline buttons. It appears to be
Exchange 2000/Exchange 5.5 issue, as I'm not having this problem w/
other external Exchange 2000 platforms. Can anyone tell me which side
this problem might exist on, and what the solution might be?

Many Thanks,

  Hello,

I am using Exmerge for the first time with Exchange 2000.

I exported some mailboxes to PSTs and copied the files to my new
server. On the new server, I run exmerge and try to import
 them (into
  new mailboxes that
have not yet been logged in to). However, I get some

Is there any kind of maintenance that should be done periodically on an

RE: Exchange 5.5 Exchagne 2000 calendar objects

2002-09-20 Thread Chris Scharff

The item is being converted to plain text en route, the solution would be
for it not to be converted... The problem might exist on your side if you've
specified that mail to this domain be sent in plain text only. Or the user
may have an option set to send to this recipient in plain text. You could
crank up message logging to see how the message leaves your org (if it
leaves in RTF format, you can place the blame somewhere outside your E2K
server(s).

We are running Exchange 2000 sp2 across the board internally.
Our users (Outlook 2000) interact w/ an external
organization that's running Exchange 5.5 (not sure what sp
rev.). When meeting requests are made by the user on
Exchange 2000 server the request is received by the Exchange
5.5 recipient as a standard message object. The destination
user does not get benefit of the accept/decline buttons. It
appears to be Exchange 2000/Exchange 5.5 issue, as I'm not
having this problem w/ other external Exchange 2000
platforms. Can anyone tell me which side this problem might
exist on, and what the solution might be?

 Many Thanks,

Currently the Conferencing server bundled with Exchange -2k use NetMeeting for
conferencing. I was wondering if there is any third party software available which can
be put on top of the exchange conferencing server to make it independent of
NetMeeting and instead use just Web Browser and still does all the functions of

RE: Tools for Maintaining Active Directory

2002-09-20 Thread Ken Cornetet

It's free, but shipping and handling comes to about $30,000.

You have to sign up for X hours of consulting to get the product.

What you end up with is a proprietary database (that's going to be retired
soon) and a proprietary scripting engine. You have to write your own scripts
to sync to other directories.

We tried it, but in the end, it ended up being to cumbersome and too slow to
be usable, so it was abandoned.

Take my advice: learn Perl and the Net::LDAP utility. You can easily create
contacts for your non-exchange users. Heck, if you use Net::LDAP, you can
even run your scripts on a Unix/Linux box.

What programs or products are other people using to maintain the Active

Scenario:

NT 4.0 SP6a SRP
Exchange 5.5 SP4
10/100 NIC
ATM NIC

I've got two NICs in every exchange server and would like to put them to
good use. I initially thought I would try to route all replication
traffic
through the Ethernet nic that's connected to all the other exchange
servers
via a switch. Then allow all other traffic to flow through the ATM NIC.
However, I've found no documentation on how to make this happen.

So having said all that, my question again; would there be any benefits
to
using both NICs?

It's great that it worked for you Robert.

The only limitation with this approach is if the mailbox associated with
the SMTP address is hidden or deleted (tombstoned). In such cases the
Alt K would not find a match. In this case an ldap query would be the
better approach. A good utility to run ldap queries is LDP.EXE, a
support tool that comes with Windows 2000 Server.

It is necessary to bind in Admin mode when searching for hidden or
deleted objects. The following article provides information on how to
do this.

Hi,

We have two boxes of Exchange 2k installed on Win2K . Both are domain
controllers in mixed mode with an NT 4 SP6a domain controller.

I installed Instant Messenger service on both the Exchange servers and
installed IM clients on all the client machines.

The problem is while it works fine for few of the users (i.e. they are
able to send and receive instant messages ) however there are other
users on the same configuration it doesn't work (i.e. they are not able
to receive messages from others, though they are able to send to those
people who works fine) . Those who have problem for them even the status
of the other users doesn't change in their IM.

They are all able to log-in fine though.

I'm totally stuck now as I couldn't find any documentation on
Microsoft's website. PLEASE some one help me . Any direction towards
technicality of Exchange IM will help including directing me to some
where I find some advance level technical information on Exchange IM as
to where it keeps the user's logged-in information and how the server is
routing messages .

I really will appreciate ANY HELP ...PLEASE

Hi,

I've seen something similar with XP over VPN. Not just connecting to a
mail server, but also to file servers. It's all down to DNS, until we
resolved the issue, we could connect to anything using the IP address,
however, using the name alone didn't work.

Either you have a DNS problem, DNS on the XP client is incorrectly
configured, or the correct DNS settings are not filtering through your
ISA server. E2K loves DNS, we can't bodge through on WINS alone
anymore :-)

Currently all my users connect fine through VPN.

My XP users get server unavailable when they start Outlook. They can

Any Ideas?

Subject: Is the list okay

Hi all,

Does anyone know if their are any problems with the list I have not
received mail for the last two days. Does anyone know a mail address of
the administrators to make sure they are not receiving any NDR's from my
mail address.

Please send a mail directly to me email address if you receive this
message, [EMAIL PROTECTED]
