RE: Exchange Event service will not start

There's also a registry setting that you can pump up for event service debugging which
I used when I had similar problems in 55. I don't recall exactly what it but technet
will tell you.

That surprises me because it's a new server and the public folder store is
on this new server and I haven't changed any permissions. I will
definitely check though. The question I guess would be, what account
would need permission to what? Exchsvc? Servername$? Exch Admins?

Hi everyone. I have a 2 server Exchange 5.5 site that I am trying to get
over to a single 2000 server.

Corp.domain.com
Win2k
Exchange 2k

location.corp.domain.com
2X Win2k
2X Exchange 5.5

The new server in the corp.domain.com is part of the rest of the exchange
site. ADC has been running and all looks ok there as well. When
attempting to move a mailbox from 5.5 to 2000 the following message
appears, and I can't seem to find any Microsoft articles that are
pertinent. There are some that mention this error ID, but none that are
an exact match to this issue. I am thinking it is a permissions issue
somewhere, perhaps with the system attendant?

Error: Connecting to destination server. cn=,,CN=,DC=,DC=com
The attempt to log on to the Microsoft Exchange Server computer has
failed. The MAPI provider failed. Microsoft Exchange Server Information

Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

Hello,

E2K: 2 Servers, same site/group, SP3+September'03 Rollup+recent
critical security patch, Scanmail 6.1, native
OS: w2K, SP4 + all critical fixes , native

The powers that be would like to move all the Servers into a new OU
Servers container in AD.

They're trying to deploy some policies against the default Computers
container the Exchange servers currently exist in, so want the Exchange
Servers out of it.

It seemed to work OK in the lab after moving and rebooting. I know some
of the Exchange Groups can't be moved out of the Default Users
container. Any problem moving Exchange Servers between containers?
They are not DCs.

RE: OWA front end server - licensing and security

2003-09-17 Thread Leeann McCallum
You could throw an OWA front end server in the DMZ, put certificate on as Ed
suggests, and then wrap everything up in an IPSEC packet that goes between
the front end and backend. Between the client on the net and the front end,
you would use SSL, so just open 443.

Ed,

I'm a little confused. You're recommending that I put in a front end server,
but not in the DMZ? It seems to me that I might have to open a bunch of
ports, but if the front end server is in the LAN, all ports are by default
open.

Just to clarify, I have one Exchange server which lives on my LAN, and there
is an SMTP server in my DMZ that relays messages to the Exchange server. At
the moment, I don't have any other Exchange servers running.

Thanks,
Erick

Instal a certificate on the front-end server and open
 port 443 to the front-end server. Putting a front-end
server in a DMZ requires you to open lots of dangerous
ports through the internal firewall to the Exchange
 servers, DCs and GCs.

Hi Ed,

I have three exchange servers (exchg01 , exchg02, exchg03)
They are all part of the same organization and within the same site.
There are public folders created on each of them.

Public folder 1 and 2 = home server exchg01

Public folder 3 to 5= home server exchg02

Public folder 6 = home server exchg03

I have now installed a new exchange server, (exchg04) and would like to
re-home all the public folders (public folder 1 to 6) to exchg04.
In doing this, I hope to free up processing power resources on exchg01,
exchg02 exchg03.

Does the re-homing actually help, and what implications are involved?

Thanks,

Remote sites

2003-05-30 Thread Leeann McCallum
I know this is probably a dumb question. In fact, I KNOW this is a dumb
question for a Friday.

I've set up a test nt4, 5.5 environment by doing a couple of restores (both
IS and DS) from 2 sites in our live environment. (Several reasons for this
incl. recovering a few public folders, testing our DR procedures, and
preparing for a 2K upgrade)

Our live environment is actually 5 sites, however I was wondering if it is
possible to somehow remove the 3 sites from the Directory that I don't
intend to restore.

I have tried removing the connectors (x400 and DRC) from the gateway server,
but there is no server in the site to contact to delete.

I'm thinking I need to somehow remove these 3 orphan sites, and perhaps
running admin in raw state, but this is just Friday theorising.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks
Leeann

RE: A Simple Question - Replacing a small drive in Exch 5.5

I haven't had to do it, but I would probably do a full backup, shut down the

Subject: A Simple Question - Replacing a small drive in Exch 5.5

Our drive that contains information store is near capacity. We will like to
replace it with a larger drive. Will the following scenario work?

1. After shutting down the server, add the larger drive and bring back the
server with all Exchange services stopped. 2. Copy the MDBData folder to the
new drive. 3. Rename the new drive same as the old drive (E: in this case)
in Disk Manager. 4. Start the Exchange services after running isinteg
-patch. 5. If everything goes well, shutdown the server and remove the old
drive and boot up.

Is there any flaw in this thinking? Please comment. Thanks.

CA's in test environment

2003-03-23 Thread Leeann McCallum
I'm doing some testing with Recipient Connection Agreements in a test
environment which does not have Exchange 2000 installed but has had the ADC,
forestprep and domainprep all run.

Our AD design has users being created in a different OU from the, so I have
created a primary 2-way CA which will replicate from a 5.5 container into an
OU which is not the default Users container. But each time a mailbox is
created in the Exchange container, an AD user is created in the default
Users container and NOT the one I've specified in my Connection Agreement.

Any ideas on what I've missed?

Thanks

RE: E2K and E2K RC1

2003-03-10 Thread Leeann McCallum
Thanks Jim,

We do want to collapse all our sites into one AG, but we can only achieve
this by using a 2-hop method as Ed has mentioned in a previous post a few
weeks back. Install E2K in each site, remove 5.5, switch to native, install
E2K into desired AG and move mailboxes from original site.

I started questioning it again when I re-read Tony's article, AND after a
discussion I had with Microsoft last week who also indicated that I could
simply install my E2K servers in each site, and then 'collapse them' in a
single hop.

Moving servers between admin groups was something they attempted in the
betas but coul dnot make work. Even with Exchange 2000 in native mode,
all objects have a legacyExchangeDN associated with them. If I remember
correctly, this was the reason that the decided it was going to be too
difficult to get working. Like Tony, I don't remember the exact reason, but
I'm thinking that was it. I remember doing it a few times in Beta 3 and
causing myself a lot of headaches (stores would not mount).

If you are hoping to re-architect your organization, once you are in
native mode you CAN move mailboxes between servers in different admin
groups. If this is what you want to accomplish, then perhaps this is the
best approach.

HTH,

Jim

I was reading an article by Tony Redmond
http://www.exchangeadmin.com/articles/print.cfm?articleID=8743 which seems
to indicate that is was possible to move servers between Administrative
Groups in RC1, yet according to everything else I've read, including Ed,
this is no longer possible in E2K SP3.

Anyone know why this was taken out? I don't think I'm going to enjoy my
migration as much as I had hoped.

SRS and E2K Migration questions

2003-02-25 Thread Leeann McCallum

I'm struggling to understand the concepts of SRS and migration to a single
AG and haven't found too much info either in Technet or other resources,
altho' I did find a good article on the Exchange Admin site.

I haven't moved to a test environment yet as I just want to understand the
concepts first.

We have 5 sites each with 1 x 5.5 server in a hub and spoke topology. We
plan to migrate site at a time reusing hardware from the previous site.
(mixed mode AD currently in place, single domain)

1. As we migrate to E2K in a mixed environment, each site will become an AG
in it's own right. Correct?

2. This means that I can only reach my ideal model of a single AG when we
have migrated completely and switched to native mode. Yes?

3. Can I do this in a single hop method...ie install my E2K server in the
5.5 site, move my 5.5 mbxs etc, and then follow Q284148 to remove the 5.5
server completely from the Site/AG before moving on to the next site, or do
I need another temp server and move users twice. Once from 5.5 into Same
Site/AG but on E2K server, and then onto a different E2K server in the final
AG?

4. Do I need an SRS server in each AG while I have 5.5 servers in the Org?

Any help or pointers very much appreciated.

Leeann

RE: SRS and E2K Migration questions

2003-02-25 Thread Leeann McCallum
Thanks piles Ed,

So...a key point I've taken is this:

Even when in Native Mode with 5 legacy Sites/AG's, I cannot move Servers
between Administration Groups;

But still some confusion on 3. If I can't move servers between AG's in
mixed or native mode, I would still need a 2nd intermediate server for each
Site/AG to move to the final AG. Is that what your suggesting?

i.e. for each 5.5 site:
5.5 -- move mbx to new h/w -- E2K in old site -- move mbx to new h/w in
new AG

1. Yes, taking the old site's display name.

2. Yes, and even then you can't move servers, just users.

3. You'll have to move to an E2K server in the original site, then, once in
native mode, from the original administrative group to the final one. But
you only need to bring up one intermediate server, the new E2K server in the
original administrative group.

4. The SRS gets created automatically on the first Exchange 2000 server you
bring up in a mixed site. Don't worry about it; there is nothing you need
to do with it.

RE: Exchange server level encryption

2003-02-25 Thread Leeann McCallum
You could have a look at MailMarshal Secure which is an email encryption and
decryption gateway. It's an add-on to MailMarshal which provides content
filtering, virus checking etc.

Are you looking specifically at e-mail encryption or would something like
transport layer encryption be sufficient?

What does your security policy say?

Ok, my eyes are going crossed.

I have googled and haven't found a product that looks right. I have searched

RE: Exchange server level encryption

2003-02-25 Thread Leeann McCallum
It could happen at the client's gateway if they use a mm server or
compatible gateway which can communiate with CAs or remote LDAP server.
Your client still needs access to your public keys regardless of whether you
get the gateway or the client to do it. Have you looked at PGP at all?

Mail marshal site is http://www.marshalsoftware.com if of any interest.

Well, basically, any information transmitted outside of our company through
a public channel (internet included) has to be encrypted. Neither the
specific type of, nor level of is explicitly stated.

What I basically want to do is this. If anyone sends email outside of our
company, I want it to be grabbed and encrypted. Decryption I would guess
would have to happen at the client on the other side.

total of 2500 public folders (do not ask me why) but only 23 of them are set
to replicate to each site. Is it possible not see the other 2477 public
folders in Outlook?

I'm in the process of changing our exchange server (Exchange 5.5 SP4 on NT 4
SP6a) which also happens to be a BDC to a stand alone server. I want to
minimize downtime and was wondering if any of had used UPromote from Algin
Technology? To either demote or promote a BDC to a member server.

Also what the recommendations are to this regard, should I just re-install
NT and exchange or trust UPromote?

Thanks

RE: do not send before

There was a bug in sp2 or 3 I think where the date passed with the message
still sitting in the mta. There is a perf counter where you can check the

Pre-outlook puts it directly in the mta I think and outlook 2k leaves it in

Yeah, perhaps. Guess it depends on how much you want to understand the DR
process. To me, it clarifies exactly the difference between isinteg and
eseutil rather than just typing in a couple of commands 'cos the DR doc says
to. Anyway, it's filed in my read once a month folder.

I need to move my Exchange 5.5 sp4 server to another NT domain and need to
know if it is as easy and changing domain membership. It is a member server
in a Win 2K domain now and needs to be moved out to our NT4 domain. Nothing
else needs to change on it. Same name, same IP address, same DNS domain. I'm
hoping that it's not tied in any way to the netbios domain name, as it is to
the computer name.

FYI, I need to do this due to a failed W2K rollout that I NOTHING to do
with. Given the current status of the project (scrap it and start over) that
may not have been a bad thing.

If it's not that easy then I'll probably opt for the server move method.
Suggestions??

Have a look in the mailbox resources, under the IS. I think you can save
the contents of this from the filemenu.

Subject: hEADER pROGRAM PARAMETER AVAILABLE?

Good afternoon,

I am interested in determining the amount of space users are user per
mailbox. Does anyone know of any program that can extract this data so I
can put it to a spreadsheet?

Thanks in advance for your help.

5-10 minutes? That's terrible! It should be every 12 minutes!

Those are transaction logs. They are created as email traffic is created.
Someone sends that 100MB mpeg of Scharff in a pink dress (you know the one!)
then the transaction logs will be created a little faster than that...

RE: sharing calenders failing after move to new server

2002-01-16 Thread Leeann McCallum

Why are you using Eudora for scheduling? Why not just use Exchange the way
it was meant to be used?

Subject: sharing calenders failing after move to new server

Had Outlook 2000 users with Internet Mail accounts sharing calender info.
and they were hooked to an Eudora Server. Everything was OK. We then
switched over to the new E2K server. Mail flowed OK. When sending
appointments to other users the Accept button did not appear on new mail. I
change the message format for pop3 and Imap to send both plain text and
embedded html. Same negative result. Changed pop3 to send in rich text
format. The users then could see the button but the appointments would not
transfer.

Question. Do I need to load the Exchange Server Service piece on the 2000
client or is there something else I can set on the server?

If you use perfwiz to move them, it will be ok [1]. Especially since when
perfwiz shuts down Exchange services to run, all logs will be committed to
the database anyways.

But yes, a backup ASAP is in good order. I don't recommend deleting the
logfiles until a good backup [2].

I have a workstation running Outlook 2000 set up to use Echange 5.5 (SP4).
This user needed to set up an Internet Email account as well, which was
done. Now, all of his outgoing mail shows his reply address as the Internet
account address instead of the address associated with his Exchange mailbox.
Even deleting the Internet Email service doesn't stop this from happening.
Why is this happening ?

and restarted the NetLogon service. Then tried to access my mailbox on the
1st server that works and I still get the message that my logon credentials
are incorrect and try again.

Ok we have 2 servers that house mailboxes. One of them works fine when
trying to access the mailboxes on that server. On the second server you are
unable to access any mailboxes using your logon credentials. What we have
are users (for some reason) logging onto their laptops locally and opening
their Outlook and it prompts you for your credentials. Once the apply their
credentials they get the message that I stated earlier. I hope that clears
it up. Let me know.

I am replying specifically to this post - when you say Firewall vendor, are
you making the assumption that our firewall is a hardware based solution?

I simply ask, because we are using Microsoft ISA Server for our solution -
and was curious if there is an add-on for that product.

I will check the website for more details - but would still like to know

 Greetings All,

If this is getting OT, I am sure you will let me know real fast.

Regarding this VPN stuff - I understand completely, the concepts
behind it - now I need to implement it. This doesn't necessarily need
to be hardware related does it?

Can't I simply install some software on the Clients and the Server
that allows them to login to the server, and begin an encrypted
session? This is getting a little beyond my expertise.

What kind of products are you all using to accomplish this complicated
task? I remember in the past when PPTP came out from Microsoft, but
have not heard much about it lately.

Thanks again everyone, you are all lifesavers!

We have 60+ salesmen and engineers who connect via 56K modem dial up
while on the road to access their email with Outlook/Exchange through
a VPN... Everything works well, though a bit slowly at times, but not
so slow as to be unusable or unbearable.

You can do away with IMAP completely if you like... Outlook allows
you to create an Offline Folder file, which is a local copy of the
information stored on the Exchange server... With the offline folder
file, users can continue to work with Outlook and maintain full
functionality whether they're connected or not and will automatically
synchronize (send, receive mail, update calendar, contacts, tasks,
 etc) whenever they are
connected...

Look in the help files for Outlook for help setting up Offline
Access... There's also plenty of info at Microsoft and other sites
 that explain how
to
set this up and use it (it's pretty simple)

 Okay -

I like the VPN route - and use Outlook 2000 as it was intended.

BUT, what kind of Network Overhead is involved - when connecting
remotely over a potentially slow connection? Will it take forever for
folders to come up, especially if they are unusually large?

Also, if the client cannot connect for some reason (which has been
happening
A LOT lately - due to massive service problems), what is the best
solution to still have your old e-mail inside of Outlook? I was
 thinking this
would
be where IMAP really comes into it's own - because you can still keep
your mail local, and on the server too - and when the connection comes
back up, you just resynchronize everything - and you are good to go.

 Thanks for your continued responses,

 Mike

Hi all,

I have a quick question. Is there a way (if possible) to lock down the
default location for saving attachment in mail (like in home-directory in
w2k environment) beside my document??. I have a user who ask this a while
back, and I have looked at MS site, Exchange list FAQ and could not find a
solution.

TIA

I am guessing you saw this and your issue is you want to know how to fix it:

Numerical Code: 5.4.6
Possible Cause: Categorizer forward loop detected. targetAddress attribute
is set on a mailbox-enabled user. Hosting Pack: This is a common hosting
configuration problem when someone creates a contact in OU1 and creates a
user in OU2 with the same e-mail address via user provisioning tool.
Troubleshooting: This happens when contactA has an alternate recipient that
points to contactB which then has an alternate recipient that points back to
contactA . Check the contact's alternate recipient. Check and remove
targetAddress attribute from mailbox-enabled users. For hosting where you
want to send mail from one user in one company (OU) to another company (OU),

Sounds like the custom receipient address is wrong. Look for the globe
thingy in your address book and check that's it's valid address if you are
forwarding a users mail externally. The article below reads a mail look to
me however.

Clarify: Are you sending to a client running exchange that is not part of
your exchange organisation? What does the NDR say? What happens when you
try sending not to the client's mailbox, but there supposed alternate
recipient address?

yes I have a client with a small business server running exchange. I'm new
to exchange and I'm having some problems. When you try and send them e-mail
you get an NDR. I found an article with the fix for it but I'm not sure how
to configure it here is the fix from the article

Troubleshooting: This happens when contactA has an alternate recipient that
points to contactB which then has an alternate recipient that points back to
contactA . Check the contact's alternate recipient. Check and remove
targetAddress attribute from mailbox-enabled users. For hosting where you
want to send mail from one user in one company (OU) to another company

For hosting where you
want to send mail from one user in one company (OU) to another company (OU),
you should configure the following two related
objects:
User: SMTP proxy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Contact: targetAddress: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; SMTP proxy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Aah the pain. I assume this is Exchange 5.5? Technet and PSS both say that
the only way to safely move scripts is to login to each mailbox, save the
script, delete the script, move the mailbox and then reinstall the script.
We recently did this for 85 mailboxes.

RE: Exchange on a Netware network

2001-10-01 Thread Leeann McCallum

We run Exchange 5.5 in a Netware 5 environment and there haven't really been
any issues other than password changing. We did look at Groupwise a few
years back, but at that point the client interface for GW provided too much
of a learning curve for our users who were already using the MS Client for
MS-Mail. Anyhow, the upshot was we got Exchange, and implemented it side by
side to Netware. I guess the biggest issue would be the extra investment
for hardware for both platforms.

We are looking at migrating to Exchange 2000, and once we have an AD
structure in place, Exchange 2k rolled out, then we will more than likely be
moving completely from Netware to Microsoft, and this is probably more a
business reason than technical, as I still believe that Novell's file/print
and Directory Services are far superior to Microsoft's. But as our
information changes form, we have to look at products outside the Netware
arena.

I have a client running Netware 5.1 with 250 win2k client pc's and 125 apple
macs. We are recommending management software and email. I personally
advise against Novell at this moment and wish to push the exchange 2000 in
the NetWare network in addition to Intel LANDesk instead of Novell's manage
wise.

Has anyone had good success marrying exchange 2000 into a NetWare
environment or even experience with Intel's LANDesk? Will exchange work at
a member on it's own 2000 platform or must there also be the 2000 domain
controller? It appears Tivoli or open view did not support the Apple Mac's
but LANDesk did which is the reason for that choice.

Unfortunately, if the client wishes to remain a Novell shop, they will
probably opt for the second choice which is GroupWise and manage wise
running both on NetWare.

RE: Exchange on a Netware network

2001-10-01 Thread Leeann McCallum

It also comes back to security, which was important to us. As I said
earlier, we had password changing issues, where Netware has a different
encryption method than MS, so if your NDS password expired, you weren't able
to change your MS one unless you were also logging into the domain. Of
course there are ways around this, (i) escape past the 32-bit client login,
(ii) use both domain and NDS authentication, or (iii) use 3rd party utils
like Netvisions' Synchronicity for NT or Novell's NDS for NT. We went down
the Synchronicity route, but could never get it working properly which went
down like a cup of cold sick with some people.

Looking back tho', I'm with Rocky, Netware environment should have a Netware
solution...altho' in saying that the only issues we have had is the password
problem and additional investment in hardware.

Rgds,
Leeann

Sorry about the brain burn on the Novell topic. Mine is smoking now too.
Trying to build a case for recommending them into MS territory but it is
hard; being that the price of the software is not too much an issue when
they are academic and the cost is minimal when it comes to their discounts.
It is mainly consulting time for deployment and ease of administering.

Why don't you just follow the Ed Crowley move server method? Easiest, very
little downtime, transparent to users. I've just finished a whole bunch of
upgrades using this method. Server name is irrelevant, IP is irrelevant

RE: Public Folder Rules

2001-09-02 Thread Leeann McCallum

You can set up Rules on Public Folders if you have permissions. Go into
Properties, Administration tab and choose Folder Assistant.

Subject: Public Folder Rules

Hi all,

I have configured a Public Folder to receive email directly (through its
SMTP address). This works fine for most of the incoming mail but some -
with specific words in the subject - need to go into another folder.

Originally, the mail used to be delivered to a users mailbox and a client
rule applied to split the mail up and forward to two public folders.

Is there a way of creating a similar rule but just for the Public Folder ?

Any ideas appreciated.

Thanks,

Tim

RE: Need KB DB Integration Too

2001-09-02 Thread Leeann McCallum

Subject: Need KB DB Integration Too

Greetings all,

THE PROBLEM

Today we receive many great articles, tips, suggestions, and best practices
from a variety of sources, in a variety of formats that are applicable for a
variety of OSs and applications. Some of these apply to only one OS or app.
Some apply to several. Currently these articles are stored in several
different places: Exchange Server PFs, NT/W2K Server folders, IE favorites.

I'm looking for a tool that will provide a single repository for all KB info
regardless of its original source. If anyone knows of a tool that comes
close to the below requirements, please let me know.

THE SOLUTION (I hope)

Ideally, it would provide the following:

  1. A single DB in which to store all KB information that is pertinent to
our organization
  2. Easily add new articles from any source:
  a. EMail from Internet lists like this one
Newsgroups
  b. URLs of manufacturer's KB article
  c. Manual entries based on our own experience
  d. Other?
  3. Fields for tracking Applicable OSs, Source, Date, application
  4. A way to assign multiple categories to a given article
  5. Fields for tracking which clients and machines are involved (if
appropriate)
  6. A query/search interface that can be based on more than just text ---
includes the fields referenced above.
  7. A web interface so that we can get to this (at least the query/search
part) from anywhere

The key is that it must be easy to use. It should automate as much of the
data entry as possible.

TIA.

Best Regards,
JMU
