Outlook XP, error sending SMTP oddity
A clients laptop with a dialup account LAN account on T1 line. Mail is hosting in both cases by others (earthlink T1 provider). When they send/receive it will be fine, click again - times out with an SMTP error 0x800cc0b saying relaying prohibited by [EMAIL PROTECTED] This domain is only a site visited by the client, and is not setup in their outlook profile anywhere. No email stuck in outbox, but this error oddly shows up often. I have run spybot and system is clean. Mail does go out, but client says mail is not coming in. I need to verify that...but strange that someone's email address is showing in the send/rec error list when no mail was ever sent there. BTW, system is running NAV2003Pro and appears clean in that respect. My thought was a lone SMTP trojan in there - but spybot nor ad aware found any. Any thoughts? Dumb question - why OWA cannot get to public folder contacts?
Ever since the early days - I always thought at some point, MS would make the OWA get to all the public folders like outlook (be able to send email by picking a public folder contact list) but alas, Ex2k3 still has no access to a public folder contact list. Grr. I know OWA is meant to be quick, simple and trim - but is this too much to ask? My workaround is to try the RPC over HTTP featurebut still need to roll out Office 2003 first at our client sites. RE: Creating an automated Bulletin Board System HELP
THat is the direction I'd prefer to go. However: We are migrating from a mainframe mail system that has a Bulletin Board feature. They want me to duplicate the feature. When you subscribe to their BB, you get any new messages to the BBs that you subscribed to. I'm trying to figure out how I can manipulate exchange and or outlook (through forms) to interact with Active Directory. I envision this: A user opens a subscription form. They choose the BB they want to subscribe to and enter their username. The form adds that username to a distribution list. That distribution list is set as the Forward recipient for that BB (Public Folder) When someone posts to the BB, everyone in the Dist list gets a copy. Sound OK? _ List posting FAQ: http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm Web Interface: http://intm-dl.sparklist.com/cgi-bin/lyris.pl?enter=exchangetext_mode=lang=english To unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Exchange List admin:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

RE: AV/Spam scanning services
I'm considering going with an outside SPAM/AV company. However, my manager feels that we don't need to put AV on our Exchange server if we do...so I am considering going just with AV/SPAM on our Exchange server and keeping everything in house. I was considering using MX Logic Defense Level 3 and using Antigen on Exchange server. I can't convince him that both would be the way to go...both meaning SPAM/AV outside and AV on Exchange. Now, I am considering just Antigen with the SPAM agent added to it. Anyone got any good points about having both SPAM/AV outside and AV on Exchange that I can bring up to my boss so he can see the added value? His points were...you mean they won't be able to do it as well as we can...then we need to not use them! As a side note - outsourced antivirus doesn't save money - you still need to have an inhouse AV product for email, because scanning at the gateway isn't enough. _ List posting FAQ: http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm Web Interface: http://intm-dl.sparklist.com/cgi-bin/lyris.pl?enter=exchanget ext_mode=lang=english To unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Exchange List admin:[EMAIL PROTECTED] _ List posting FAQ: http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm Web Interface: http://intm-dl.sparklist.com/cgi-bin/lyris.pl?enter=exchangetext_mode=; lang =english To unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Exchange List admin:[EMAIL PROTECTED] _ List posting FAQ: http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm Web Interface: http://intm-dl.sparklist.com/cgi-bin/lyris.pl?enter=exchangetext_mode=; lang=english To unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Exchange List admin:[EMAIL PROTECTED] _ List posting FAQ: http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm Web Interface: http://intm-dl.sparklist.com/cgi-bin/lyris.pl?enter=exchangetext_mode=lang=english To unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Exchange List admin:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Sync multiple palms, outlook w/single login
I have a client who wants an open PC to be able to sync multiple palm pilots with multiple outlook profiles. Their exchange server is 5.0 on an NT4.0 server, while the new main server is Win2k. We setup a new domain, setup the trust to NT4 domain then changed the exchange mailbox accounts to the new Win2k accounts. I tried to setup a PC with a special generic user login, use the hot sync intellisync, and when they open outlook it prompts for a profile but I get the typical error saying don't have rights to open folders and cannot log in to outlook. I figured I would test with administrator login account, gave admin account rights on the exchange store from the new domain, gave delegate rights on a user to allow the admin to it but all failed. Can this be done - having one PC login to open a multitude of outlook profiles to be able to sync up the palm pilots? Or, is there no way to fool/tell exchange that this login ID can open any users outlook? On a side note - this whole network is terminal server based and I am testing this with a login on a fat PC. If anyone has any success in using methods like this on a thin network, I am interested. I have not tested the new digi USB network hub, but am interested if anyone has possibly used this in a thin setup to allow sync'ing on TS to a cradle. In house exchange server is not being used for internet...only internal employee email exchange. OL2002 client has both exchange internet service runningeach user pulls from their own pop server thru the common dialup connection.. Hope that clears the confusion. Sending attachments from user to user via internal exchange is fine...just the internet is flaky. Ex2k, cannot receive after backup w/veritas
I am looking for anyone who has ever encountered an Ex2k sp2 box fail to receive email after a backup using veritas BE8.6? Few weeks ago, we started a backup from the main server to the mail server, using the BE exchange agent and backing up the entire mail server and information store (not-BLB). The first backup went ok, but the second backup failed and showed a run time of the whole weekend and then the email cannot receive again. This first happened on the 4th/July holiday when the mail could not come in, but can be sent out. After review, the SMTP service was corrupt and we reinstalled exchange with MSPSS due to their documents for this scenario not being correct. Ended up reinstalling IIS, then full install of E2k and all worked well. Veritas backup bombed and now cannot receive a second time I am checking with Veritas to see what gives...did also notice system state of mail server failed at backup and several E2k open files. Anyone see this behavior? RE: Ex2k, cannot receive after backup w/veritas
Nope. Avoided the M drive and only backed up the IS, C$, D$ and system state. I have now disabled the backup until I check further if BE can cause such an anomaly. I will test the backup of C$, D$ IS to see if the system state was hanging it upnot sure though how E2k can get affected by this. Email Limits
OK, I need some help. I have been looking for a setting in Exchange 2k, and I can't seem to find it. I am looking for the setting that limits the number of mail one person can send out to another single mailbox. What I am trying to do: My HR Department posted a job online and have gotten a lot of responses through emails to one mailbox. He is wanting to forward 1/3 of the mail two other mailboxes so he doesn't have to screen all the emails himself. However, when I created a rule in Outlook to forward the mail to the other mailboxes, it is only sending out 20. I want to send out 200 from one mailbox to the other mailbox. Or, if you have another solution that will work for me, I am open for suggestions. Send mail from Public Folder - cannot
I have setup public folders with email addresses assigned to them. I wish to send mail as the public folder but when I try, it says cannot send due to send as rights. In exch. admin for 5.5sp4, I have set myself permissions to SendAs. On my outlook 2000 client, I have setup a PAB to accept the address used on the public folder (the folder email addresses are hidden from the GAL). When I go to properties on the public folder, I add address to my PAB (it does not do it) so I manually add the email address to the PAB but still no good. What the heck am I missing? I do not use PAB except for the fact that according to info on slipstick.com, you need the PAB to accept an email address on a public folder if hidden in the GAL. RE: Send mail from Public Folder - cannot
Ok, that worked now. But, is there a way to get the send address to look like the email address from the public folder and not where it says from me on behalf of the public folder email? -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Soysal, Serdar Sent: Friday, April 05, 2002 3:45 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Send mail from Public Folder - cannot Excerpt from slipstick: If you want a user to send with a folder's address, the folder must not be hidden. ... Once the user has Send As permission, they can use View | From Field in Outlook to display the From box and either click From to choose from the Address Book or type in the name of the public folder or other mailbox. If the public folder is hidden from the GAL, the user should go to the folder's Properties page and add the folder's address to their own address book. Now, this is a little confusing. I did try it with both OAB and PAB, both SMTP and X.400 type addresses. It does not work with a hidden folder when you create the address manually. However, if you go through the steps in Q184545 to add the folder address to your personal address book, it works just fine. One more thing to note is, when I tried this I didn't have a PAB and it created a contact item in my Contacts folder instead, which works just fine. So you still don't need the PAB. RE: Backup
Question about backup : Each time you restore the IS to the recovery server, and pull the mail to a PST, does this make that mailbox unable to take advantage of the Single instance storage? Ron -Original Message- From: Benjamin Winzenz [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, January 11, 2002 8:56 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Backup No, it isn't. Read the FAQ's. Specifically, read the Ed Crowley Never Restore method. It is good advice for anyone and a sound practice as well. Combining Deleted Items Retention with hiding mailboxes for a set period of time will all but nullify the need to ever restore a mailbox. I have been with my company for over 2 years, and have not yet ever had to restore a mailbox. I keep a test server just in case, and I test restores every once in a while, but that is it. RE: Win2k backup and Exchange
In trying to fully understand I have a question: You said if 2 of the three were there, I can recover to pre-crash. Full backup and log files - I can see that. Database and log files - ok (im assuming it will replay the last good log file) But what about the Full backup and a good database volume? If my transaction logs are gone, I can only restore to my last good log file on the tape right? If so, my restore would not be up to the point of crash. Right? Wrong? Have you ever heard of a full system crash? Although I admit it is much less likely than any other type of failure it is still possible to lose the entire server, isn't it? And if it is, the logs you are so fond of referring to will be about as useful as your sarcasm. If you ever have the misfortune to work for lawyers you will find that there are certain things you do and deal with and a full system daily backup which is as up-to-date as possible is an absolute requirement. That is the reason that I am asking and why I feel my use of differentials is warranted. If I am not mistaken, a tape of any sort is only going to be as useful as the last information written to it if that is the only source of data, is it not? Therefore, a full server crash in the late afternoon with only last night's full backup leaves you SOL for almost a full day's work. However, if I am incorrect in my assumption that a tape which contains a full backup along with differential backups will allow me to rebuild my server completely and restore it to the point of the last differential then I would honestly be interested in hearing why. Furthermore, if there is a way to restore and roll the logs should the server that the logs were on be completely dead using just a full backup from the night before than I retract all sarcasm on my part and look forward to hearing how that process would work. -Original Message- From: Kevin Miller [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Monday, January 07, 2002 12:36 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Win2k backup and Exchange READ IT. recover from crash
Scenario: You come in one morning, reboot the exchange server, and it never comes back up, blue screens or whatever. It crashes. Question: What do you do FIRST to try to bring it back up? What do you do Second if that doesn't work? At what point do you go for the recovery server, and your backup tape? I was looking through the disaster recovery paper and its great...but I didn't see what to do before the backup server plan. It has tons of switches and command line tools, but im looking for elementary type notes When it crashes, try ERD first and run repair, if that doesn't work try... Stuff like that. IF the server boots, I found lots of info on error messages and the likes to try to get the IS started etc..but nothing if its basically dead. I know, this is something I should have learned long ago, but point me to the site, or papers where I can get this and I can move past this embarrassment! Thanks! Ron Oh and I found this in the archives: When your Exchange server crashed, most likely you need restore it from the tape. It is time consuming. But, If you have a clean and working dir.edb stored somewhere else, you don't need to restore it from the tape, just copy it back! So when your Exchange server is in a good condition, copy the dir.edb file to a save location such as another server, or your SAN. Is it the dir.edb that causes the crash? And does this copy tip work most of the time? _ List posting FAQ: http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm Archives: http://www.swynk.com/sitesearch/search.asp To unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Exchange List admin:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

NAV for Exchange 5.5
Hi Folks, I just found out we are going with The Norton Solution for our company anti-virus protection. This is fine for server and client, but I was also told we would be using NAV's solution for Exchange. (Groupware I think). Since I was not involved in this decision, but was the sole decision maker when I chose Scanmail...im not too happy. But...I turn to y'all again, as I did a few years ago for info on the best AV solution. This time I'm asking what kind of problems will I see with this new NAV scan engine that was chosen for MY Email servers? Is the NAV a solid, non-flaky product for Exchange? I feel the same way. I really researched for the best solution back then, and scanmail it has proven to be great...no crashed servers, no bluescreens etc. We did have a few outbreaks, but that was I think due to scanmail being on a P-133 and not being able to keep up with the influx. IF I can build a strong enough case against NAV for scanning...and just do the server/client side solution only, that would be great. I have a sister company with their own Exchange server 5.5 sp4 on Win2k. They now want to connect to my exchange server, 5.5 on win2k to only share address books. What would be the best way to accomplish this? I was thinking LDAP, and have them search for names in my GAL, but you have to touch each Client to get this configured. What I am looking for is a way to add their GAL to my GAL and vise-versa, without doing a site connector or anything? When they click on address book, they have the option of choosing my GAL or their GAL to find a name. Is this possible, and if so, is there a good step by step place I can go for the info? Thanks! Exchange on a Netware network
I have a client running Netware 5.1 with 250 win2k client pc's and 125 apple macs. We are recommending management software and email. I personally advise against Novell at this moment and wish to push the exchange 2000 in the NetWare network in addition to Intel LANDesk instead of Novell's manage wise. Has anyone had good success marrying exchange 2000 into a NetWare environment or even experience with Intel's LANDesk? Will exchange work at a member on it's own 2000 platform or must there also be the 2000 domain controller? It appears Tivoli or open view did not support the Apple Mac's but LANDesk did which is the reason for that choice. Unfortunately, if the client wishes to remain a Novell shop, they will probably opt for the second choice which is GroupWise and manage wise running both on NetWare. RE: Exchange on a Netware network
Sorry about the brain burn on the Novell topic. Mine is smoking now too. Trying to build a case for recommending them into MS territory but it is hard; being that the price of the software is not too much an issue when they are academic and the cost is minimal when it comes to their discounts. It is mainly consulting time for deployment and ease of administering. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Kevin Miller Sent: Monday, October 01, 2001 11:05 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Exchange on a Netware network You guys are hurting my brain, making me remember all this Netware stuff. Yes. Still on. Here is what I got from them: September 11 was a day of shock and sadness for people around the world. Our hearts go out to all those who have been affected by this terrible tragedy. As you know, President Bush and other global and national leaders urged that the business and economic activities of this nation and the global economy must continue, even as we all work together to address the terrible human costs of the September 11th tragedy. The reopening of the financial markets is just one step in resuming the economic activities of our nation. After long consideration, we have decided to move forward with the MEC 2001 in Orlando, Florida, on September 30th through October 4th as scheduled. Based on input from travel industry and government officials, we strongly believe that national and international air transportation, hotels and other support services will be fully operational before the MEC 2001 conference opens. All MEC 2001 keynotes, sessions, functions and special events will take place as scheduled. We are working closely with state and local authorities to ensure every possible security measure is in place. nimda virus changes on me
Well, I just put in a 24 hour shift to patch the ol' web, email, main and terminal servers in one form or another and clean up 30 workstations. Was a little too late in the blocking of all .exe files on the sybari but I think this one entered thru the front web door on a client PC hitting an infected web site. Odd - two of the PC's out of the 30 were REALLY infected so as I could not repair. I need to format these boxes. Has anyone seen this virus change or morph into other executables other that the noted ones (riched20.dll, readme.exe, load.exe, modified system.ini, plus several other windows programs)? RE: Form not updating.
Had the same problem here (forms cache corruption). Ended up touching each workstation by deleting the forms cache folder on local pc, then opening up outlook contacts (do NOT open an actual contact yet), click on tools, forms, choose form (to apply to the current contact list database), organizational forms (or wherever your form is) and double click that. You will see the form download quickly to your PC and that does it. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Callan, Chris Sent: Tuesday, September 18, 2001 1:39 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Form not updating. RE: Exmerge - Copying PST to Mailbox
Ok, done...but still no mailboxes show up in exmerge. Reason?: I do not think the old mailbox is deleted, or effected...so I think the message I sent went to the original mailbox. Possible? When doing this, once I get the PST, should I delete the original mailbox..THEN create a new one on the new server? I didn't do this because I want to be sure EXMERGE brought everything over before I delete the old box. -Original Message- From: Schuessler, Bob (Efdsouth) [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, August 23, 2001 2:01 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Exmerge - Copying PST to Mailbox Send a message to the new mailbox. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, August 23, 2001 03:09 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: Exmerge - Copying PST to Mailbox Hi Folks, I'm messing with EXMERGE,and have a question that I can seem to narrow down in my searches. I did KCC, and dir replication, and still no mailbox. But under the new server in the rec container I see it.?. Any hints, tips, or links? Zone alarm would be perfect, but if I use it to do not allow IE to access the internet, all that needs to be done is open ZA, and click allow it. RE: blocking internet access (OT)
Haha...this is funny. I used the kid as an example but it is , in a way, to keep kids out of the net. Its in a youth area of our Church, and they want the Adults to be able to access the internet, but not the youth. And keep the lock down method simple for the Adults who are not that great on computers. That's it in a nutshell. The boot password would be good, but the youth need to use the apps on the Pc. I didn't think Zone alarm had passwords..but I might have missed it. (I will download it here at work and see). I like the script idea...But it would say GOD says no internet instead of Dad...hehe. I could change the DNS numbers, but I really don't want them going in and changing things like that when they need access. I got a tip that Norton Internet Security can do it, so I'm looking into that, and a current version of Zone alarm for passwords. Thanks for the OT help!
