[expert] VPN problems to access university

2000-07-05 Thread Daniel Woods

Having looked into getting VPN to work from my NT at home
thru my LM7.1 firewall/IPmasq, I am annoyed !
I have read the VPN howto and linux VPN masquerade. The
former is if you want to create your own local VPN. The
latter one indicates that you must patch the source and
recompile the kernel.

I am using the Nortel Network Extranet as the VPN client
on NT, which worked before adding in my linux firewall.
This extranet supports IPsec and ISAKMP. IP masq is working.

I went to http://www.wolfenet.com/~jhardin/ip_masq_vpn.html
to get the patch, which is only 2.2.15 and saved as
ip_masq_vpn-2.2.15.patch.gz
except that it appears to not bein gzip format. Yes, I tried
winzip and gunzip/zcat while trying to do
zcat patchfile.gz | patch -l -p0 vpn.log
I've contacted the author John Hardin on this, but has
anyone else got this working ?
Will the 2.2.15 patch be ok within my 2.2.16 kernel ?

So now I had to look into (learn) how to rebuild the
linux-2.2.16-secure.mdk kernel already installed.
How does the "secure" kernel get built ? Where is the
option or source I need to make sure it's compiled as
secure ?
I got the source and RPM (and installed) after running
MandrakeUpdate.

Thanks... Dan.

Well, I thought I was running 2.2.14secure in the past and 2.2.16secure
now. Wrong! My system is not setup for the secure kernel (??) and when I
added both 2.2.14secure and 2.2.16secure in lilo, I got a kernel panic
during reboot, saying there was a system/kernel mismatch. So, now I can not
 start Linux at all.

I have been able to boot using an old Caldera install/boot disk (dummy me
didnot make a proper boot disk). I can access and mount my HDD, however I
can not edit lilo and solve this problem since I can not access any
 editors; ed or vi.

 Any idead?

[root@i686-it-2 gullevek]# whereis vi
vi: /bin/vi /usr/bin/vi /usr/man/man1/vi.1.bz2

if you can access your HD you can use vi ... that's a fact. or do you
mean, you can
only access one part of the HD ? mount in the others ... that should be
no
problem.
or perhaps you don't have the paths set correct, then just type in

/bin/vi /etc/lilo.conf

and now you should be able to edit the lilo.conf

[expert] best way to firewall FTP?

I recently installed my first firewall at a customer's site running Mandrake 7.1..

It was a classic setup, and I wish I had more examples than the HOWTO manuals.

The Linux PC has two ethernet cards, one hooked up to the internet,
the other, to their local network.

Local network wants to use FTP, naturally.. Both via browsers, via "cute things"
like GetRight, or just via their web browsers. I was forced to leave open
a large hole, like ports 1024 - 5999 and 6010: .. Is there a better way, short
of installing Squid (the machine doesnt have the horsepower for squid)..

Re: [expert] Remote Access of Root

Richard

I think that the defaults for telnet and FTP can be changed to allow
root access. However I do not recommend this.
You should create another account with limited privileges that you
ftp/telnet into, and then su to root. This is a lot safer, and does not
require you to modify any files.
Also if you want an even more secure connection you can install SSH. That
will encrypt your sessions and will not pass plain text passwords as FTP and
telnet do.

  Thanks

I'm not sure in which of two places the problem lies. First, if you
cannot login at all via ftp or telnet, check /etc/inetd.conf and (I
think) /etc/services to make sure these apps are available. If they are
enabled and you cannot login as root (which is highly likely), you can
telnet in as a normal user and "su" to root. I'm not sure how to solve
this issue for ftp access.

You may want to consider installing ssh (OpenSSH for a business
environment - I believe that one is free for commercial use) and using it
instead of telnet since data will be encrypted as it passes over the
network. With telnet all data - passwords and all - are sent in clear
text. Again, I don't know much about ftp. However, a quick search on
freshmeat may turn up some secure ftp client/server.

One last tip if you are using Windows clients to telnet or ssh into your
*nix servers, check out CRT as a replacement for telnet or SecureCRT for
a ssh client for Windows. It's an excellent terminal app - much better
than Windows telnet!

Is it configured in inetd (/etc/inetd.conf)? You should see a line like
this...

If you'll going to connect to you computer from a static IP, I'd suggest
configuring linuxconf to only accept connections from that IP. You can also
use Webmin which can be compiled for SSL

I've installed the 2.2.17mdk kernel from the Mandrake cooker, and the
only complaint I have (so far) is that the boot-up screen switches at
mid-point to an SVGA mode to display the Mandrake logo at the top. I
can do without the logo as I know what I'm installing, and, in fact,
it doesn't work properly on my system anyway, displaying only a
"ghost" image. How do I disable this in favor of the standard boot-up
screen so I can concrentrate on what I'm reading? Thank you.

1.) Never ever login as root!
2.) If you still want it:
- check out /etc/securetty (delete it to set all ttys as "secure")
("best" securetty has only one line: tty1)
- maybe check /etc/shells (checked by ftpd for valid user shell)
- check /etc/inetd.conf
- check /etc/hosts.deny and /etc/hosts.allow
3.) on telnet and ftp your password is sent readable and unencrypted over
the net, so please (please!) use openssh:
- ssh instead of telnet
- scp instead of ftp

 Hi all,

Well, in light of having to replace the hard drive in my laptop over the
weekend, I thought I would go ahead and install Mandrake 7.1 - I was
using Mandrake 7.0. One of the new features touted by Mandrake 7.1 is
USB printer support. Sure enough, it appears that Mandrake is seeing my
USB interface, and it even notices a printer out there, and loads the
printer.o module for it. However, no matter what I can do, printing
 does not work.

I've configured my printcap to talk to /dev/usb/usblp0. I'm connected
to an Epson Stylus Photo 750, which can run both USB and parallel. No
matter how I configure the printcap entry, I cannot get even a page of
text to come out of the printer. The print queue eats the print jobs,
and ACTS as if it were printing. I.e. checking the print queue status
with lpq shows no jobs in the queue for the printer. I've configured
Mandrake's print filter for an Epson Stylus Color 800 ESC2/P printer -
that should work, as under Windoze, I can print with a stock ESC/2P
 print driver.

Can you use with "Epson Stylus Color (UP)" driver and choose one of the stc740*
mode for the option available.

François.

Hmmm, well the absolute best simple explanation I have seen for
socket programming comes with the html on-line and downloadable

of what made me a python convert. I think it has its own

But basically a socket is a transport for a message--it either
sends one or receives one and is then destroyed (and possibly a
new socket created). Naturally they are closely associated with
servers and clients, including X servers and font servers. And,
like everything else in a unix universe, they are files as well.

Ummm,

ssh is better than telnet for your purposes, I would say.

Webmin installation will allow you to use telnet nicely as well as control a
host of other things remotely (including server settings such as ftp) and
can be very dangerous if you do not set it up properly (as a potential

[expert] NEC PowerMate 2000

2000-07-05 Thread Civileme

From the NEW-TOYS Dept.

It arrived and was placed in the arms of this system
administrator. i810 Chipset, LCD Screen 64Mb of
SO-DIMM memory, a tiny foortprint and WinNT.

First item was to find a witness to erasing the
NT partitions (they were FOUR 15-bit FATs, no less) on
the 6.4G HDD. WinNT was never booted so we will be
applying to NEC under EULA for a refund as we return
the unopened CDs and still sealed manual with its
certificate of authenticity.

Now on to Mandrake 7.1

The install went smoothly, normal use, expert mode
(why expert? I'll get to that)

Everything is in--network is set up and doesn't work
(no security downloads) and then we have the X server.

No configuration works--Cancel and do not run X at
Startup

Startup--login as root and run Xconfigurator.

Now it works on the test, but sets up in 800x600 in
15-bit color

Well when the graphical login comes it is
640x480--I need three monitors tro accommodate all the
info. Luckily Alt-click grabs windows anywhere to move
them around.

Networking showed the NIC recognized but "Enabled"
wasn't ticked. I ticked and quit quit/activatechanges
and lo we had networking light and networking too.

Change X resolution was next--would not accept any sane
combo.

So click on the house-up one level, /etc/X11/XF86Config
change VideoRAM to 8192, and uncomment the line. By
now, most people would have turned the air blue because
the screen blanks for redisplays if you look at it
crossways Very annoying!

quit DrakConf, ctrl-slt-backspace login as root run
DrakConf-Change X Resolution-Show all

NOW we can select 1024x768 in 16 million colors
(actually 16777216) or 4 billion colors 800x600

For some weird reason agpgart.o for the i810 will not
accept 800x600 so we go 1024x768 in 16 bit depth so
netscape doesn't look too crappy. The 24 bit depth
works but netscape doesn't like it. THis results in a
steady screen after quitting and another
ctrl-alt-backspace to restart X.

BY golly, count the Powermate 2000 as linux-neutral.
It is a bit of a pain in the posterior to set up but it
does work.

Well, to make matters *_BAD_* there are networking/DSL combo
cards that fit your PCI slot and are software driven with Windows
drivers.

Make sure you have an Ethernet and a crossover cable to an
external DSL modem. If it is IPairGain, you do NOT need a
crossover--it works strictly as a bridge to the remote
gateway--and you use the same IP on your ethernet that the
gateway uses and the crossover is handled on that end.

If, as is more likely, it is in bridging mode, you need a
crossover cable and to configure for either static IP or dhcp as
spec'd by GTE.

Finally, if it is in routing mode, you will have an IP and a need
to configure the DSL modem to export routes to the LAN(ethernet
side) and to the WAN(twisted-pair phone cable) side.

Whatever you do, do NOT take the "card-based DSL modem". Make
sure it is an external so you don't get something driven only by
proprietary software. Remember, if there is a binary-only linux
driver, you then have unaudited and inauditable software INSIDE
the core of your operating system. Very few of us migrated to
linux for that.

You have to see whether your DSL modem spits out straight
Ethernet or PPP-over-Ethernet (PPPoE). If regular ethernet,
then just run the dhcp client and act as if you are on any
other Ethernet LAN. Maybe someone else can help if GTE
makes u use PPPoE.

GTE's DSL is just bridged ethernet. Once the DSL is inststalled and
tested. Set up your networking just like you were going to be plugged
into an ethernet switch. If you go with GTE as your ISP (I didn't) you
will have to set up for DHCP. It is fairly simple to make this work with
linuxconf if your pump DHCP client is up to date. Make sure it supports
the -h option.

tell Netscape what your email settings are and off you go.

[expert] RH and other distro users

2000-07-05 Thread Civileme

It is a clear and distinct message to me when other distro users
show up on this mailing list for help... A very hopeful message
for the future of amicability.

By george, I'll help them with no distinction. Of course my
advice may not be as well researched, because I haven't seen the
other distros in a while and I don't know immediately where to
look for the tech support doc, but then they should know free
advice is well worth what they pay for it.

So why are those folks here?

1) Their distro has a "cathedral-style mailing list", with
_bona-fide_ "experts" instead of users struggling to help each
other out. We all have seen what happens to people who become
too impressed with themselves and their own knowledge.

2) The mailing lists for their distro are flame magnets.

3) Their own distro has NO mailing list

As long as they don't advocate their distros here, I don't think
I have a problem. If other distro users are showing up here and
they are well-received, they'll be with us soon enough. Now is
not the time to deviate from a winning strategy, or from being
our friendly selves. I really don't think helping out people in
need is raising the entropy of the universe, nor do I believe it
constitutes tortious conduct.

I'm running RH 6.2 at the moment. I susbscribe to this list since
there are lotta good people here and I've learned a tremendous amount.
2 reasons I'm running RH.. When 7.0 came out there were just too many
problem's being reported. I'm not good enough in Linux to fix some of
these on my own. Also, as of tonite I own a CD burner. I didn't
before, and I burnt a RH CD at work beacuse I needed to make a few work
projects that I wanted to run Linux on. Now that I have a burner, I
will probably upgrade ( new install ) of Linux when KDE 2.0 comes out
and appears on Mdk.. I will probably go back to MDK since I think they
are really making it easier for some of us less knowledgable..

I haven't done this upgrade, but I have to say, this is beautifully put. If you
want to get new users you need to always put their needs and thoughts foremost
in your minds. Just don't forget (like M$) that experienced people are still

[expert] Mandrake Forum News Poll...

2000-07-05 Thread Gael Duval

Hello everybody,

several weeks ago we set up an experimental Mandrake web forum that
was intended to get as many ideas as possible about what the future
Linux-Mandrake systems should be. This forum was intended to have a
very short life (one week). As those discussions were a frank success,
this lead us to the idea that the users need to tell MandrakeSoft
their feelings about Mandrake. That's the reason why we have:

- reinstalled this system with a dedicated name
[http://forum.mandrakesoft.com]
- converted it into a general Mandrake news site where people can post
stories like in Slashdot, and post comments

I'm inviting you to take a look at it again, and especially to choose
a new name for it. Several names are already available, such as:
mandrakeforum.com or mymandrake.org. Which one do *you* prefer?

Vote now on: http://forum.mandrakesoft.com

Greets,

Gael.

PS Due to the recent new KDE2 beta packages that are available on the
same server, the forum can be slow sometimes.
