[expert] Comcast Routing

2003-08-02 Thread Sevatio
Hardware Scenario: 2 PCs connected to a hub/switch and the hub/switch is
connected to a Comcast cable modem that is connected to the Comcast
Cable Internet system.

Main Question: Is it possible to route things in a manner that enables
the 2 PCs to send data (via FTP or whatever) to each other at LAN speed
(10/100mbps)? What happens now is that the data transfer is limited to
Comcast's upstream limit (256kbps) because the packets are going out to
the internet and coming back to the other PC. How would I set this up
so that the data transfer rate is in the range of a local area network
(close to 100mbps) by routing the packets to go directly through the
hub/switch to the other PC?

Side note: I noticed that 2 PCs running Windows w/ Netbeui and file
sharing, the data transfer is that of LAN speed.

So what is Netbeui Windows File Sharing doing that is allowing the LAN
speed connection between the 2 PCs and how can I get my 2 Linux boxes to
ftp to each other at LAN speed given the hardware scenario?

Thanks,
Sevatio

Thanks, these are very relevant questions. The two machines have
external IP addresses. The modem is a Motorola SB4100 Cable Modem.

cos if they are on the same subnet as each other then if you have a switch
then they should avoid the modem completely unless you have set each machine
specifically to route all traffic via the modem! if you have a hub then i'm
surprised this works at all unless you have static public ips for your
machines from comcast in the same subnet as the modem,
is your modem also perhaps a router? with maybe a private ip side interface
and a public side interface?

i'm no network guy but i think these are relevant questions

Hey, I just bought Partition Commander 8 and it seems to do the job of
resizing and moving EXT3 NTFS server very well without any 'error'
messages. It even handles ReiserFS. I would highly recommend this over
Partition Magic. Actually, I would recommend that people stay away from
Partition Magic because of all the errors it keeps reporting when trying
to handle any of the file systems created with Diskdrake.

You can share the backup folder in W2K, and map it in Linux using Samba.
Then backup from there.

What sort of connection do you have between the machines? If it's
relatively fast, you can try something like g4u which does a complete
disk image.

Depending on lots of factors, you could also try:
1) Backup to CD-R for the initial backup, rsync for incrementals.
2) winscp to the Linux ftp server
3) WinCVS to a Linux CVS server

What kind of RAID are you talking about? IDE, SCSI, software, etc.

If you mean, can it be done by using one of those embeddded Highpoint or
Promise ATA-RAID controllers, which require Windows drivers, you can pretty
much forget it. SCSI I am sure works, and Linux software RAID does not work
in Windows, and it is tricky to boot Linux off of.

I'm not sure if this is possible but I'll see if any of you guys know
how to do this.

I have a cable modem connected to a hub. Then two linux boxes connected
to that hub. They each have their own IP addresses. When I transfer
files from one to the other, the speed is limited by the speed of my
internet connection (which is around 256kbps).

How do I make it so that my linux boxes can transfer files at the
maximum LAN speed of the hub? Or to rephrase: how do I route the
packets so that they don't have to go out to the internet and then come
back to the other pc but instead go straight through the hub from one pc
to another?

DO both boxes have public ip addrresses from your isp? One of those SOHO
router/switches translating private addresses to public would allow this.
Are you sure it is a hub, or is it a swtich?

Yes, public ip addresses on each pc. The hub is just a dumb hub.

Okay, I am trying to replace one linux box with another that is believed
to be configured exactly the same. The new box will also have the task
of being a gateway to the internet via attbi for several machines on my
LAN. The problem is: with the new box acting as a gateway, the PCs on
the LAN can get to some websites and not others. Also, at times the
connection for those LAN machines seems really slow. Could it be that I
need some time for the gateway machine's DNS server to catch up? Or
are there potentially other issues here?

Where's a good place for reading about how to set this up?

and then I noticed that Mandrake Control Centre set both the LAN WAN
NICs to have the same IP 192.168.0.1 . Is this going to confuse that
PC? If so, what IPs are typically assigned for internal and external in
this situation?

Not exactly a Linux question ;) but I think it is a limitation of PM5,
I have PM7 and one of the brag features is support for 80GB drives.
Did a quick look on the net and FAT32 can go to the terebyte size if you
really want (imagine the scandisk on that after a BSOD), so I don't
think it is a FAT32 problem.

Thanks. You were right. PM7.0 did the job.

Knetload is a great program for monitoring NIC throughput. For some
reason Mandrake doesn't install it by default. You'll find the rpm on
your distro disks. You might even get kcpu while you're at it. They're

Another problem with this lame lock feature is when Mozilla freezes up
and you have to killit. After which that lock file is still there
keeping you from starting up another Mozilla unless you go and delete
the lock file. This might not be a big deal to most of us but I've been
trying to introduce new users to Linux and this is just another pothole

If Microsoft built houses, they would not have windows and doors.
Instead, they would suggest that the homeowner hire a security guard

The worst part is listening to mainstream news talk about the
hopelessness of protecting against viruses and internet-borne attacks

[expert] Korn (Mail Monitor) Chime

2002-01-31 Thread Sevatio

I'm using Korn (Mail Monitor) and would like to get it to play an audio file
like a bell or chime whenever I get mail. There's a place where you can put
in a line command. So, is there a console audio player that I can use to
play that soundbite? And, what is the command to make that possible?

Thanks in advance,

Sevatio

Re: [expert] automating mount proces

2001-12-06 Thread Sevatio

Many of us are having problems with LM8.1's Supermount. Some of the
suggestions that I've seen have been to use KDF (Kdiskfree) and/or add
CDRom icons to the Desktop. Although these give us the ability to access
the removable media, it is still an awkward step backwards. So I'm
starting
this thread to hopefully help those that are having this problem and of
course, the many that will encounter this problem. If some of these
methods don't work, please contribute to this solution.

-

LM8.1 Supermount - Getting the darn thing to work. - FYI.

I've been fooling around with the CDRoms and Floppy lines in fstab
and got Supermount to work for both the CDRoms and Floppy drive.

Try these lines (one line per device):

/mnt/cdrom /mnt/cdrom supermount
fs=iso9660,dev=/dev/hdc,ro,nosuid,nodev,exec 0 0

/mnt/cdrom2/mnt/cdrom2 supermount
fs=iso9660,dev=/dev/scd0,ro,nosuid,nodev,exec 0 0

/mnt/floppy /mnt/floppy supermount
fs=vfat,dev=/dev/fd0,nosuid,nodev,exec 0 0

After saving /etc/fstab with your new lines, do a
umount -a
and then
mount -a

Now they should mount automatically.

Observations: Some things that oddly caused this Not to work:

fs=auto - (instead, I had to use iso9660 for the CDRoms and vfat for
the
floppy)

iocharset=iso8859-1, codepage=850 - (I just removed these because they
kept interferring with Supermount)

Good Luck,
Sevatio

[expert] Gigabyte GA-7ZX-1 Bad System Clock (was Re: [newbie] gigabyte GA-7ZXH)

2001-10-26 Thread Sevatio

Jose,

I rebooted my GA-7ZX-1 to Windoze98 and have had it there for more than a
day. The time remained accurate to the second. As far as I know, Windoze98
uses only the hardware clock for its timekeeping.

OTOH, LM8.0 LM8.1 uses a combination of the PC's hardware clock its
system clock. The system clock's time can drift away from the hardware
clock's time by over an hour per day. The problem is further exacerbated
when the shutdown process instructs the hardware clock to set its time to the
screwed-up systemclock.

Normally adjtimex can be used to adjust the drift rate of the system clock,
LM8.0 LM8.1's drift rate fluctuates wildly rendering adjtimex useless.

Since Wind98 and LM7.2 (pre 2.4 era) did not have this problem, I must say
that this timer issue is not OS independent and is related to LM8.0 LM8.1
and perhaps any distro out there that uses the 2.4 kernel.

I hope that they resolve this sometime in the near future. In the meantime,
I'll abstain from purchasing suspect hardware.

Nathan,

Sorry it took so long to reply. I just found this email. I'm not an expert
but will try to explain... The aRts is a part of KDE. It's mainly for KDE
related software and KDE sounds. XMMS has the option of using aRts instead
of OSS but I would just stick with OSS. OSS and aRts can run at the same
time. You can configure it by running KDE Control Center. Then go to

2. Is there a way to sacrifice a different key? (Instead, can we
assign the back-slash key to be the 'dead' key?)

Answer:

It's easy. You select the US keyboard (international) in the Mandrake
control center - hardware - keyboard.

Then you can make use of deadkeys to type characters like ä (single
quote
followed by a), è (backquote followed by e), é (single quote followed by
e),
ç (second alt, equals sign, c -- took me a little while to find this
one),
 and ê (shift 6 followed by e).

Download xkeycaps if you want to explore it in more detail.

Re: [expert] mouse stops responding when switching between KVMswitch

2001-07-12 Thread Sevatio

Is your OmniView linux-compatible? I'm using Belkin Cube which is
linux-compatible. A year ago when I was shopping for a KVM, it took me
several tries before I found the right KVM. Even the tech-support
departments of those other KVM makers are totally clueless and they may
incorrectly claim that it should work.

I have 5 computers on my desk that share 1 KVM Switch (Belkin OmniView
Pro
 8-Port). 3 PC's run MDK8.0, 2 are OpenBSD. When I switch between the MDK
boxes, sometimes I lose control of the mouse. I can sometimes fix this by
loging out of KDE, other times I have to reboot. I use a PS/2 Wheel
mouse. Is
there a better way to restart the mouse if I still have keyboard/console
 access?

I remember seeing a thread about restarting lmwheel but could not find it
 today.

[expert] Bind, Named Portsentry

When setting up Named/Bind, are there precautions to take when Portsentry
is running in its default setup? In other words, do I have to do
anything to Portsentry so that it doesn't interfere with Named's

Re: [expert] flickering

Edit file:/etc/X11/XF86Config to change MonitorSection to reflect the
proper Horiz and Vert refresh rates. Then restart X.

[expert] flickering:

 Hi all.

I have to use Linux in text mode and actually, I like
all Unix variants in text mode.

 But with Linux-Mandrake 8.0, I have a small but
important problem in text mode. My screen is
flickering very bad and after some hours my eyes are
 always tired.

There are two possible solutions, but I couldn't do
 one of them:

 1) Changing refresh rate of VESA text mode, it runs in
 60Hz now.

 2) Disabling VESA and using normal 80x25 text mode.

First option will be better, since using VESA is
easier if you are a developer :)

In normal text mode (for example in DOS) my monitor is
running in 60Hz too, but it's not flickering...

 Any idea?

 Thanks.
