[expert] Comcast Routing
Hardware Scenario: 2 PCs connected to a hub/switch and the hub/switch is connected to a Comcast cable modem that is connected to the Comcast Cable Internet system. Main Question: Is it possible to route things in a manner that enables the 2 PCs to send data (via FTP or whatever) to each other at LAN speed (10/100mbps)? What happens now is that the data transfer is limited to Comcast's upstream limit (256kbps) because the packets are going out to the internet and coming back to the other PC. How would I set this up so that the data transfer rate is in the range of a local area network (close to 100mbps) by routing the packets to go directly through the hub/switch to the other PC? Side note: I noticed that 2 PCs running Windows w/ Netbeui and file sharing, the data transfer is that of LAN speed. So what is Netbeui Windows File Sharing doing that is allowing the LAN speed connection between the 2 PCs and how can I get my 2 Linux boxes to ftp to each other at LAN speed given the hardware scenario? Thanks, these are very relevant questions. The two machines have external IP addresses. Hey, I just bought Partition Commander 8 and it seems to do the job of resizing and moving EXT3 NTFS server very well without any 'error' messages. It even handles ReiserFS. I would highly recommend this over Partition Magic. Actually, I would recommend that people stay away from Partition Magic because of all the errors it keeps reporting when trying to handle any of the file systems created with Diskdrake. Symantec's staff is sniffing glue. Or... they're suffering from overexposure to Microsoft products. Or... they're assuming that linux users are as naive as the average Microsoft drone and can therefore be milked of some money. If Microsoft built houses, they would not have windows and doors. Instead, they would suggest that the homeowner hire a security guard from Symantec Security Service to walk around the house as you try to live your life. Re: [expert] automating mount proces
Many of us are having problems with LM8.1's Supermount. Some of the suggestions that I've seen have been to use KDF (Kdiskfree) and/or add CDRom icons to the Desktop. Although these give us the ability to access the removable media, it is still an awkward step backwards. So I'm starting this thread to hopefully help those that are having this problem and of course, the many that will encounter this problem. If some of these methods don't work, please contribute to this solution. - LM8.1 Supermount - Getting the darn thing to work. - FYI. I've been fooling around with the CDRoms and Floppy lines in fstab and got Supermount to work for both the CDRoms and Floppy drive. Try these lines (one line per device): /mnt/cdrom /mnt/cdrom supermount fs=iso9660,dev=/dev/hdc,ro,nosuid,nodev,exec 0 0 /mnt/cdrom2/mnt/cdrom2 supermount fs=iso9660,dev=/dev/scd0,ro,nosuid,nodev,exec 0 0 /mnt/floppy /mnt/floppy supermount fs=vfat,dev=/dev/fd0,nosuid,nodev,exec 0 0 After saving /etc/fstab with your new lines, do a umount -a and then mount -a Now they should mount automatically. Observations: Some things that oddly caused this Not to work: fs=auto - (instead, I had to use iso9660 for the CDRoms and vfat for the floppy) iocharset=iso8859-1, codepage=850 - (I just removed these because they kept interferring with Supermount) Good Luck, Sevatio Original Message dated 12/5/01, 4:00:21 PM Author: Grouwels Daniel [EMAIL PROTECTED] Re: [expert] automating mount proces: Hi, How can I automata the mount proces in the mandrake 8.1 I can't find it thanks Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [expert] Gigabyte GA-7ZX-1 Bad System Clock (was Re: [newbie] gigabyte GA-7ZXH)
Jose, I rebooted my GA-7ZX-1 to Windoze98 and have had it there for more than a day. The time remained accurate to the second. As far as I know, Windoze98 uses only the hardware clock for its timekeeping. OTOH, LM8.0 LM8.1 uses a combination of the PC's hardware clock its system clock. The system clock's time can drift away from the hardware clock's time by over an hour per day. The problem is further exacerbated when the shutdown process instructs the hardware clock to set its time to the screwed-up systemclock. Normally adjtimex can be used to adjust the drift rate of the system clock, LM8.0 LM8.1's drift rate fluctuates wildly rendering adjtimex useless. Since Wind98 and LM7.2 (pre 2.4 era) did not have this problem, I must say that this timer issue is not OS independent and is related to LM8.0 LM8.1 and perhaps any distro out there that uses the 2.4 kernel. I hope that they resolve this sometime in the near future. In the meantime, I'll abstain from purchasing suspect hardware. Sevatio On Wednesday 24 October 2001 10:25am, you wrote: The timer issue is OS independent, and is not related to Linux. 7.2 did not have the routines which attempted to fix the problem AFAIK, whereas 8.x does. -JMS Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [expert] Lexmark Z82 scanner
What does Lexmark's Techsupport tell you? I'm curious because they've had a track record of supporting linux with print drivers. Original Message On 8/18/01, 10:19:40 AM, Mitch Thompson [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote regarding [expert] Lexmark Z82 scanner: Just purchased a Lexmark Z82 printer/scanner/copier, and have discovered that it isn't supported by sane, as far as I can tell. Some small comfort is that it doesn't seem to be supported by Win2KPro. The printer/scanner can be accessed through either LPT or USB. Any clues or nudges in the right direction to find a suitable substitute driver? Appreciate any help. I know, should have checked the listing of supported scanners, but I figured that $139 was a great price for a multifunction printer. Mitch Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [expert] Cups / Kups Remote Printing Problem
LM8.0 Cups 1.1.7-1.1 Hello, I'm trying desperately to print onto a remote cups server but I'm having no luck. Using Kups and Kupsdconf, I can get the cups servers to see each other. I can even setup the remote printer using Kups. But when I print, it does not show up on the queue of the remote machine. It does however show up on the local queue; which is useless since the printer is located remotely. How the h3ll do I print onto a remote cups server? [expert] Cups Remote Printing - Does It Even Work?
Okay, I'm willing to put more time into this seemingly hopeless cause of getting Cups to work for remote printing. This involves four machines running LM8.0. So far, I've tried Cups versions 1.1.6, 1.1.7-1.1, 1.1.9-5. I can get local printing to work and I can get remote printers to show up on Kups. But print jobs just can't get through to the remote printers. At this point, I just need to know one thing: Have any of you been able to get Cups to print on remote printers? If so, what version Cupsd are you using? Also, what particular application did you use to setup your remote local printers? TIA, Sevatio Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [expert] Galeon Imwheel interference - Solution
A few days ago we had a thread about how Imwheel cause Galeon to ignore settings and scroll one page at a time. The solution we had at the time was to kill imwheel. I just ran across this better solution where you configure imwheel to ignore Galeon. Edit your imwheelrc file to include ^Galeon @Exclude The imwheelrc is most likely located in /etc/X11/imwheelrc. This is for the KDE Desktop: I'm searching for a better Eth throughput monitor than WMnet. Everyone that's I've setup LM8.0 for can't make any sense of Wmnet's graphics and readings. Re: [expert] Accessing French German ASCII Characters? How?
Thanks. Now I getting somewhere. But I still have two more questions. 1. What is xkeycaps and where do you get it from? 2. Is there a way to sacrifice a different key? (Instead, can we assign the back-slash key to be the 'dead' key?) Sevatio Original Message On 7/15/01, 2:59:28 PM, Stephen Boulet [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote regarding Re: [expert] Accessing French German ASCII Characters? How? -- Answer: It's easy. You select the US keyboard (international) in the Mandrake control center - hardware - keyboard. Then you can make use of deadkeys to type characters like ä (single quote followed by a), è (backquote followed by e), é (single quote followed by e), ç (second alt, equals sign, c -- took me a little while to find this one), and ê (shift 6 followed by e). Re: [expert] mouse stops responding when switching between KVMswitch
Is your OmniView linux-compatible? I'm using Belkin Cube which is linux-compatible. A year ago when I was shopping for a KVM, it took me several tries before I found the right KVM. Even the tech-support departments of those other KVM makers are totally clueless and they may incorrectly claim that it should work. Edit file:/etc/X11/XF86Config to change MonitorSection to reflect the proper Horiz and Vert refresh rates. Then restart X. Original Message On 6/11/01, 9:11:40 AM, Serdar Ozler [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote regarding [expert] flickering: Hi all. I have to use Linux in text mode and actually, I like all Unix variants in text mode. But with Linux-Mandrake 8.0, I have a small but important problem in text mode. My screen is flickering very bad and after some hours my eyes are always tired. There are two possible solutions, but I couldn't do one of them: 1) Changing refresh rate of VESA text mode, it runs in 60Hz now. 2) Disabling VESA and using normal 80x25 text mode. First option will be better, since using VESA is easier if you are a developer :) In normal text mode (for example in DOS) my monitor is running in 60Hz too, but it's not flickering... Any idea?
