Hooray! My fav (McPhee) is amongst the top 3! :)
Her "best" performance, though, of those we have
seen here in F-land, was, IMO,  "Think!", several weeks
ago!

Probably not due to the same mechanism --not even remotely. Witnessing waking,
dreaming and sleeping likely don't have any effect on the functioning of the rostral
anterior cingulate cortex. Any in CC "not minding" of pain isn't due  not feeling or "caring"
about the pain, but simply due to the strength of the connections that give rise the CC
state in the first place.

[FairfieldLife] My Pain, My Brain

2006-05-13 Thread authfriend

Totally fascinating article (long) in the New York Times magazine.  A
few excerpts:

My Pain, My Brain

By MELANIE THERNSTROM
Published: May 14, 2006

Who hasn't wished she could watch her brain at work and make changes
to it, the way a painter steps back from a painting, studies it and
decides to make the sky a different hue? If only we could spell-check
our brain like a text, or reprogram it like a computer to eliminate
glitches like pain, depression and learning disabilities. Would we
one day become completely transparent to ourselves, and — fully
conscious of consciousness — consciously create ourselves as we
like?...

Over six sessions, volunteers are being asked to try to increase and
decrease their pain while watching the activation of a part of their
brain involved in pain perception and modulation. This real-time
imaging lets them assess how well they are succeeding. Dr. Sean
Mackey, the study's senior investigator and the director of the
Neuroimaging and Pain Lab at Stanford, explained that the results of
the study's first phase...showed that while looking at the brain,
subjects can learn to control its activation in a way that regulates
their pain. While this may be likened to biofeedback, traditional
biofeedback provides indirect measures of brain activity through
information about heart rate, skin temperature and other autonomic
functions, or even EEG waves. Mackey's approach allows subjects to
interact with the brain itself.

"It is the mind-body problem — right there on the screen," one of
Mackey's collaborators, Christopher deCharms...told me later. "We are
doing something that people have wanted to do for thousands of years.
Descartes said, 'I think, therefore I am.' Now we're watching that
process as it unfolds."...

How does it work? I want to ask. Just as people were once puzzled by
Freud's talking cure (how does describing problems solve them?), the
Stanford study makes us wonder: How can one part of our brain control
another by looking at it? Who is the "me" controlling my brain, then?
It seems to deepen the mind-body problem, widening the old Cartesian
divide by splitting the self into subject and agent

The area of the brain that the scanner focuses on is the rostral
anterior cingulate cortex (rACC). The rACC (a quarter-size patch in
the middle-front of the brain, the cingular cortex) plays a critical
role in the awareness of the nastiness of pain: the feeling of
dislike for it, a loathing so intense that you are immediately
compelled to try to make it stop

...Patients who have undergone a radical surgical treatment
occasionally used for pain (as well as for mental illness) called a
cingulotomy, in which the rACC is partly destroyed, report that they
are still aware of pain but that they don't "mind" it anymore. Their
emotional response has receded

Really worth reading the whole thing at:
http://tinyurl.com/noo5e

(That last bit reminds me of what MMY says about Jesus not suffering
on the cross.  Pain isn't suffering if you don't *mind* it--if it
doesn't overshadow you?)

First we have to verify that Jerry really said he resented having to give her the money. Then
we have to wonder why Jerry, oh-so-dedicated, Jarvis, went around telling everyone he
was resentful...

Suitcases delivered without foreknowledge by the guy carrying the cash. He just opened it
up saying MMY told me to give this to you and have  you open in front of me so I could be
all surprised and disillusioned...

It was always ridiculous to have the anonymous accounts, not that I
need to know who's actually posting, but a bunch of "anonymous"
makes it difficult to follow an individual through a thread. There
are dozens of email providers for those who don't want to reveal
their actual identities.

Bush Motorcade Aims Assault Rifles At Protesters In Florida

Prison Planet.com | May 12 2006

Eyewitnesses are reporting that during Bush's recent visit to Florida,
protesters were shocked to see security goons and secret service
aiming assault rifles at them hanging out of the window of the passing
motorcade.

Should we be surprised that ordinary bill of rights exercising
Americans are treated like terrorists in light of the latest
revelations on the NSA spying program?

Is this Nepal or America?

Accounts provided to the Daily Kos website are reprinted below.

Narrative re: Bush's visit to SCC on May 9, 2006 from Barbara Nicholson

We stood with about 50 others on rte 674 and when the motorcade came
by there was assault rifle OUT the window pointing at ALL of us and
the cars all looked like I remember seeing in the Hitler motorcades in
the movies when I was a child, all boxy and black and one had the Pres
seal and American flag on the sides. It was absolutely chilling! I
worked the inner city for 15 years with gangs and even with kids and
families of the Bloods and Crips and have never had an assault rifle
pointed my way. In my 75 years I have seen many Pres motorcades and
shook many pres hands and seen many pres elects and their entourage
but never anything like this with the motorcycles, big black cars and
rifles were just the very last straw. It wasn't the rifle that was
scary it was knowing that this madman is so insecure and scared and
psychotic that this is how he must travel. AARGH! USA, Banana
Republic for sure. Then to know our tax money paid for this photo op
and for the fundraising luncheon at the Renaissance Club is truly the
icing on the cake which will kill us all. Very depressing to say the
least.

>From an intern for Congressional candidate John Russell (FL-5):
Here is my full story, with everything correct. As you know I am
interning with John Russell, a candidate in District 5 running against
Ginny Brown-Waite. We went to the protest to make sure bush heard
about the problems with Medicare Part D. As the President drove by
John was delivering his message to the President, who was looking at
us out the window. I don't remember if it was before or after the
President's car, but inside on of the black suv's was a man holding,
what looked to be, an automatic rifle out the window. It was pointed
at the protesters. I am glad to hear that the people on the other side
of the street saw this too. Those of us on the corner I was on
couldn't believe that this had occurred, and John proceeded to tell
President Bush as he got out of the motorcade, 'how dare you point a
weapon at civil protesters' among other things. It was a very
interesting day for me, being the first time I have ever seen the
President, and the first time I have been directly threatened by the
President. hopefully this helps in lining up the stories. Please send
this out to everyone, and keep the talk growing. I want to know if
this is standard operating procedure for the Bush motorcade, or a one
time thing.

~Nic Zateslo
Intern for John Russell, Candidate for Congress District 5

And from Kossack boofdah:
Mary, Nic, and I were there as well; and yes, it went down exactly as
Barbara and John have said below. I don't think I've ever felt such a
sense of foreboding in my life as when I saw that automatic rifle
pointed at us, peaceful protesters.

At the time September 11th happened, I worked at a military base near
where I used to live before we moved to FL. Immediately after 9/11,
our base was at Threatcon D, meaning that the military personnel
guarding our base had to be armed. Yeah, I saw sharp-shooters and
automatic rifles; but I took some kind of comfort in the notion that
these measures were meant for the "bad guys."

On Tuesday, the message that the sniper hanging out the window with
his automatic weapon had for us was that we peacefully-protesting
Americans were the "bad guys." And that thought alone gave me the chills.

Paul.  There is much confusion over which verses in the Bible are
authentic and which are not but  we can still try to locate the true
message of Jesus. Jesus refers to himself as a prophet upon many
occasions; Mark (6:4) and Luke(13:33) for example.  Jesus 'speaks
not on his own authority'; John (12:49), (4:4) and (7:16) for
example.  Jesus denies perfect (full) knowledge: '...I know not the
Hour but the Father in heaven Only Knoweth...'(Matthew). Neither did
Jesus say: 'saved by my blood'. He described 'keeping the
commandments and having faith' as the road to heaven; Matthew (22:37-

(5:24).

Jesus lived his life in accordance with the will of God.. 'the one
who sent me'. We believe Jesus was chosen by God. This is a great
honor indeed!  Chosen by God to deliver the Divine Message.  We also
avow that he was born of a virgin, Mary.  (A fact which many
university educated Christians do not believe!) Note that Joseph is
not to be found in the  Islamic literature. We are told in the Quran
that Jesus spoke from the cradle to defend his mother from the
accusations of fornication. The Quran also states that Jesus
fashioned a bird out of clay and it came alive by the will of God.
He healed blind men and  lepers and raised a man from the dead , all
by the will of God.  And, yes, he spoke with authority.  God gave

Gods' mission for them and God gave each prophet special talents and

Muslims if we do not honor and believe in Jesus as a mighty prophet
of God.

after  killing the Anti-Christ .  He will be the leader of the
believers and will pray and judge according to Islam , which is and
always has been the religion of all the prophets since Adam.
[Remember Islam means submission to the One and Only God.] At this

[FairfieldLife] Re: Jesus: A Prophet?!! Not Divine?!!

2006-05-13 Thread off_world_beings

We met Jesus.

He was very tall, about 15 feet, very thin, with blue skin, three
eyes, but like those of a Jaguar cat, and wielded an ornate golden
longbow. His charge was a majestic white horse who spoke in tongues,
and a transparent crocodile lay sleeping at his feet.

He spoke in tones that played on the mind like sweet melodies, or
like a soft breeze over calm water.
Our hearts were filled with love, and we saw that history had never
existed.
We wept with joy, and forgave all those who trespassed against us.

precursor.  By the way, I didn't even read what came before this

need to comment on it - whatever it was you said.  Personally, I
think, absent the petty arguing, things will get boring around here
for a while.  Then somethng new will emerge.  I hope it gets a chance.

Ya know, I'd be a whole lot more open to your
comments if you showed any sign of having read my
responses to similar critiques from others.

If it weren't for posts from two brave souls who had
read enough of the discussion between me and Curtis
to have a relatively clear idea of what actually went
on, and several supportive emails from folks who also
had a clear picture but didn't quite have the nerve
to buck the mob mind and post publicly, I'd think I
was living in some alternate universe, and that the
critics had read an entirely different exchange than
the one I actually had with Curtis.

I've done my best to correct the record, including
quotations and references to specific posts, to
absolutely zero effect.  Not one of the critics has
said, "Oh, so *that's* what really happened--I
missed those particular posts.  Sorry!" nor has any
of them addressed what I said substantively in any
way, even to disagree.

You can go back and read my responses to the critics
if you have any interest in what really took place.
I'm just going to reproduce here part of one post to
Rick (which he, of course, ignored completely) that
addresses your comment above about how Barry has
allegedly modified his behavior (I don't quite see it,
but anyway...) and how you apparently don't think I
have.  Here it is (Rick first):

> I have my critics on this forum, and
> when any of them criticizes me I don't brush them off or go
> ballistic trying to defend myself. I feel somewhat chastised and I
> take a moment to reflect on whether their criticism may be true.

Rick, think a minute.  Why do you imagine my first post
to Curtis was as cordial as it was?  And why did I try
to keep him from provoking an argument with me?

Why do you think I've been cutting short the arguments
Shemp has tried to start with me lately?

Please give this a moment's reflection.

When you've been doing your best to *avoid* the kind
of thing folks have expressed their displeasure at,
and they then accuse you of doing it anyway, it's very
difficult not to speak up and point out that *this*
time they've gotten it wrong.  You'd have to be a
masochist, or have very low self-regard, to meekly
take the attacks without objection.

You see me being testy, but what you *don't* see is
all the times when I've refrained from being testy
recently.  I've been genuinely trying to refrain more
and more.

That's why I attempted to abort the discussion with
Curtis.

For instance, I realize that I have
> been overly obsessed with the MMY/sex thing and I've done a fair
> amount of soul searching on why that bothers me so much. If
> virtually everyone who cared to comment were repeatedly pointing

It did with me, and I've been acting on it.  Not
perfectly, but I've been trying.

[FairfieldLife] For Judy--from a lurker

2006-05-13 Thread anonybliss_ff

>From a lurker--I posted a while back (anonymously, for which I have my
reasons, whether Barry likes that or not--but that won't matter cause
he will never read this, nor think it has any value, which is neither
here not there) regarding the "feud" between you and Barry, expressing
that I thought you were both obsessed and also pointing out my
incredulity at the vitriol of some of Barry's expressed opinions.

A number of people besides me during that "feud" thread called Barry
on his behavior and actions. While he met the criticisms with bravado
and is defintiely still Barry, he also seems to have modified his
bahavior substantially. (I'm not positing a causal relationship
between forum members expressing their dissatisfaction with the feud
and his changing his behavior, but it's a pleasant correlation ;)--or
is that a pissant correlation? I get mixed up)

But Judy, like so many others who have commented recently, I think it
it is you who need learn something from this one. Most people here
like you, and when people who like you are telling you that your
behavior is out of line and needs to be examined, maybe it's time to
listen to them. Shemp's "statutue of limitations" comment pretty well
sums it up, I think.

I'm posting this because I had the lurking temerity to jump into the
other discussion and express my incredulity at some of Barry's
behavior and some sense of fair play, misguided or not, says I should
balance it out. The anonymous pissant lurker who couldn't let Barry
off the hook, can't let you off either. You appreciated my comments
about Barry, I hope you appreciate these too.

Having said that, I'm joining curtis in backing out the door

What if you gave an argument and nobody came

Disclaimers :)
Nobody put words in my mouth.
Nobody gave me a script.
I have never corresponded with Barry or anyone else on this forum
privately.

Aren't vices (gambling, lust, drugs (incl. coffee), and alcohol)
kind of like mistakes, more of a subjective reckoning that we are
doing wrong, than anything objectively wrong?

At one point or another, I've indulged in all of the above vices and
for the most part found the experiences quite enjoyable. The dotted
lines that I have now drawn for myself for such vices, are largely
of my own making, dependent on whether I think/feel such an
indulgence is appropriate or not.

Similar to whether a mistake is a mistake, with vices, timing is
everything.

I would have to go with a decent cappuccino, I think coffee is the

Well, I had a look at your website just to see if I could explain it
and I can see no link whatsoever between the two. Except possibly
that you got the thing in Bagdad Arizona, but as Iraq had nothing to
do with 9/11 I guess you'd better let god of the hook for this one.

Plus there is a six year delay between events, I don't think you are

This is a common mistake, the moon isn't a perfect fit and the
quality of an eclipse also depends on where the earth is in it's
elliptical orbit.

Also, the moon is slipping away from us by nearly two inches a year
and will eventually fly off into space, and then life on earth will
REALLY be in trouble but the human race will be long dead by then so
don't go losing sleep over it

[FairfieldLife] German pundit scam

Rumor has it there’s a big campaign to get a large pundit group in Germany, with the usual threats of dire consequences if they don’t succeed. Can any of our German members report on this?

In one case he did. After Jennifer left, she got substantial payments for a while. I don’t know if it was considered hush money or support money. Jerry Jarvis rather resented having to give it to her. I don’t know if others got money, but some got fancy saris, jewelry, etc.

The hypocrisy of this post from Barry is so
extraordinary it went right by me the first time
I read it.

Aside from the lie that I've done this to more than
one poster--that one being Barry, of course--and the
lie that I "praise" other posters for "piling on"
after I've criticized him, and that I claim it's
their "god-given" duty to trash him--notice that in
this post, Barry does PRECISELY what he criticizes me
for doing (including the things I *don't* do).

Nor is this the only post in which he has done so.

He is, in fact, describing his own posts attacking me.

This is spiritual and moral corruption of the very
highest order.

For starters, you only have one side of the story. MMY will never tell his, so
you will never know what really went on. My opinion is that these women
should stop whining about something that happened so long ago. They bear
some responsibility, too. We were all young and stupid once, but why tell the
whole world about it?

[FairfieldLife] The Holy Grail on Ebay

2006-05-13 Thread TurquoiseB

Or at least a share in it. This auction was listed as
having been "removed by Ebay" today, so it was a scam.
But it's a cute scam...wonder how much they netted.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for an investment "Angel"
to come in at the ground level to purchase a two per cent equity
share of the Holy Grail.

A two per cent share of the Holy Grail will be yours in the event of
the Grail being found by the sellers, who are two seasoned Grail
hunters from the UK. The Grail hunters have amassed a vast knowledge
of Grail lore over a period of more than 20 years and have close
connections with leading figures in some of the preeminent
clandestine organisations associated with the Holy Grail, such as
the Knights Templars and the Priory of Sion.

We have drafted a document which details the material terms of the
deal we are offering. It reads as follows:

This Agreement dated ... grants
to .. (hereinafter known
as the Grail Stakeholder) a 2% (two per cent) beneficial but not
executive ownership stake in the
artifact/substance/device/phenomenon/episode/entity/some other stuff
or thing popularly known as "the Holy Grail" (hereinafter known as
the Holy Grail) in the event of the aforesaid Holy Grail being found
by

(hereinafter known as the Grail Finders).

The parties agree the following terms:

(1) The benefits of this Agreement comes into effect upon the
finding of the Holy Grail by the Grail Finders. Except as otherwise
agreed in clause 3(ii) of this contract, this Agreement does not
apply to, and the Grail Stakeholder hereby acknowledges that the
Grail Stakeholder shall have in perpetuity no claim to, any income
or assets in any way associated with the Holy Grail that may have
been generated or owned by the Grail Finders prior to their finding
of the Grail.

(2) If the Holy Grail manifests itself in physical form, the parties
agree that in the event this physical form may be deemed to have
financial or otherwise economic value, the Grail Stakeholder will be
entitled to certain shares of the generated revenue. To this end,
the parties agree as follows:

(i) In the event that the Grail Finders decide at their sole
discretion to sell the Grail to a third party (including but not
limited to the Pope or any other certified personal representative
of God, or any other nominated agent appointed by God to act in
God's name) the Grail Stakeholder will receive 2% (two per cent) of
the identifiable net receipts realised from such sale.

(ii) If the Grail Finders at their sole discretion decide to exhibit
the Grail to the general public, the Grail Stakeholder will receive
2% (two per cent) of the Grail Finders' identifiable annual net
profits generated from such an exhibition.

(iii) If the Grail Finders use the Holy Grail as a principal
attraction around which to establish a business venture of any other
nature (including but not limited to a Holy Grail Theme Park), the
Grail Stakeholder will receive 2% (two per cent) of the Grail
Finders' identifiable annual net profits from such a venture.

(3) If the Holy Grail manifests itself as a cup or a chalice or a
bowl or some other kind of vessel for holding liquid, it is hereby
agreed that:

(i) The Grail Stakeholder will be allowed one sip from the vessel of
a beverage of the Grail Stakeholder's choosing, which beverage to be
provided by the Grail Stakeholder at the Grail Stakeholder's sole
expense. The Grail Stakeholder may thereby gain eternal life and the
healing of all physical ailments. However, because the Grail Finders
cannot be held responsible for the mysterious powers of the Grail
and all that, the Grail Finders shall not be held responsible for
any failure on the part of the Holy Grail to give eternal life to
the Grail Stakeholder, or to alleviate physical ailments, and the
Grail Stakeholder hereby warrants to make no claims of any kind
against the Grail Finders in the event of such failure.

(ii) The Grail Stakeholder will receive 2% (two per cent) of the
Grail Finders' identifiable annual net profits from the sale to
third parties of sips from the vessel, whether such sales are made
before (through "option to sip" agreements) or after the discovery
of the Holy Grail.

(4) If the Holy Grail manifests itself as a person (somebody of the
direct bloodline of Christ and/or the ancient Merovingian kings, for
instance), the Grail Finders will endeavour to secure reasonable
access to the said person for the Grail Stakeholder to film and take
photographs.

(5) If the Holy Grail does not manifest itself in physical form and
cannot be financially or otherwise exploited in any way, the Grail
Finders will do their best to make sure that the Grail Stakeholder
experiences whatever experiences can be experienced through, with,
from, or as a result of, the Holy Grail on a pro-ra

I have read the things that have come up in FFL and in Connie
Larssons book, and I believe what it indicates happened, and I feel
sorry for the women. They are the weak part here, and if they come
out and tell about their experiences, why should I not believe them?
