--- In FairfieldLife@yahoogroups.com, turquoiseb no_reply@... wrote: Dear Lord Knows, First, congratulations on seeing through Robin's blatantly obvious attempt to lure you into another of his confrontations, a tarbaby that once you interacted with it he would make nigh unto difficult to escape from. As you so accurately described w.r.t. his interactions with Curtis, that is exactly what he was trying to do, and you wisely didn't fall for it. Now, if the people whose lives revolve around confrontation and argumentation will allow it, I'd like to try to shift the tone and the content of interaction with you somewhat. I was taken with both the clarity and the compassion of your first post and its followups, and find myself wondering a little about you and what you've been doing in the Time Since Robin. I will *completely* understand if you don't feel like getting into such stuff, first with an absolute stranger (moi) and second on a very public forum full of people who will attempt to turn anything you say into an attempt to get you (this place, FFL, the Funny Farm Lounge). But here's why I'm asking. As you may have surmised, if you have been lurking here for a while, you may know that I too had my run-ins with those of the Narcissistic Personality Disorder persuasion. In particular, one Rama - Dr. Frederick Lenz. Many of his antics and abuses made Robin's look like the amateur wannabee guru poseur behaviors they were. It was quite a ride. But, like you, I felt that I learned something from the ride. I learned never to mistake charisma for enlightenment; the former is often an occult thang, driven by the will of the charismatic person (either consciously or subconsciously), and often completely self-serving, which says a lot about the charismatic person still having a lot of self. :-) In my experience enlightenment is a much quieter, softer thing; it doesn't seek to attract attention to its self, because... duh...it no longer has much of a self. It just IS. You either notice it or you don't, and IF you don't, the enlightened being Just Doesn't Give A Shit. It is tempting, after a prolonged interaction with a spir- itual teacher who fits the DSM-IV definitions for NPD and hypomania, to become disillusioned with the spiritual path entirely, and to walk away from the whole thing in disgust. I know quite a few people who did just that after spending some time with Rama. Me, I like to think that I took another path. I am still more than open to the possibility of enlightenment. (How could I not be? I've had flashes of it myself.) But what I no longer accept are the many descriptions of it that IMHO have nothing to do with What Enlightenment Is. Like the enlightened person being perfect, or omniscient, or even capable of performing siddhis. The last one doesn't compute *at all*, because Rama could perform siddhis out the ying-yang, and I don't believe for an instant that he was fully enlightened. Siddhis and enlightenment are apples and oranges in my book, not related in any way. IMHO, the siddhis and enlightenment are related to each other at least this way: For one to able to abandon the siddhis it seems almost inevitable to experience at least some of them. Otherwise, you don't have nothing much to abandon, have you? A bit like, it's easy to not give a shit for having sex, if you are a eunuch, but it's whole another thing if your testosterone levels are normal or perhaps even above normal? Or, it's easy to abstain from smoking if you've never smoked in the first place. Etc, etc... As Patañjali puts it: tad-vairaagyaad api doSa-biija-kSaye kaivalyam (III 51). Do you mean not be interested in them, or do you mean not be interested in learning to perform them, or do you mean not being interested in them once having mastered them, or what? I'm not a good writer by any standard, especially my semantic ear might be way weaker than average, even in writing/speaking in my own language. The last one of your alternatives is what I mean. A bit like, it's easy to not give a shit for having sex, if you are a eunuch, but it's whole another thing if your testosterone levels are normal or perhaps even above normal? I honestly think -- having witnessed siddhis being performed on a regular basis for over 14 years -- that a lot of it has to do with their relative rareness in the world. A *lot* of people are flashed out by the rarity of them, and think that either being able to witness them or perform them will alter their lives forever, and in a positive way. Having been there done that with both, I disagree. I think that there is a *value* in either witnessing or performing siddhis, in that they allow the seeker to break the boundaries of what they consider reality and what its constrictions are. But do they transform a person or *do anything* for them? I would have to say, based on my experience and that of hundreds (nay, thousands) who saw Rama perform them, that they don't do diddley- squat *except* expand one's vision of what the possibilities of life really are. They do NOT transform consciousness in any mean- ingful and lasting way. Or, it's easy to abstain from smoking if you've never smoked in the first place. Etc, etc... As Patañjali puts it: tad-vairaagyaad api doSa-biija-kSaye kaivalyam (III 51). And prasaMkhyaane 'pi akusiidasya sarvathaa viveka-khyaater dharma-meghaH samaadhiH (IV 29). This means nothing to me. I neither know Sanskrit, nor care to learn it. And I don't recognize Patanjali as any kind of authority. I think it's best that everybody checks out their favourite translation(s). Those who know some Sanskrit can then compare the translation to the original.

Check out these statistics. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_firearm-related_death_rate Among the European nations, Finland surprisingly is #1, followed by Northern Ireland. Again, go figure. I think the main reason might well be that -- according to DNA-studies -- about 60% of Finnish men are descendants of Siberian mammoth hunters (who might well have been in quite a close contact with the Vedic Aryans during their migration towards South..). As opposed to that, Finnish women's genes are more Western European. That makes women in Finland quite powerful. Men here have a hard time in trying to cope with those strong women, which quite often makes them mighty desperate and aggressive. That and heavy drinking often is a lethal combination...

Since this is an internal paper we saw, it has probably less to do whom you would like to mention, or who is you enemy, but rather, whom you see as a serious competitor, and with whom's publicity strategy you will compare. From our AOL fiends on FFL e could hear some time ago, that while AOL is largely successful, it is mainly through the Indian populace in the US. Besides that, SSRS is mainly presented as a Guru figure, and that is maybe something they want to avoid. From what I hear, SSRS has decided that people should not bother returning to the mantra if they find themselves in pure consciousness. That is an important distinction, if correct, and to me, it misses the point of TM: if you can notice you are not thinking the mantra, you are no longer in PC anyway, so there's no point in enjoying it, as you aren't really there. You're just fooling yourself. This is a typical Lawson. (Make me the Lawson) So, do you think that SSRS, being a close disciple, closest as you can think of, until his departure, just didn't *get* TM? I know that Shankaracharya Shantanand, taught also westerners through a London based study society, (inspired by Maharishi, but with just one mantra) gave a similar instruction: He went even further, that you don't have to bother about the mantra, if you are in an advanced state of meditation, but just can stay in silence. When you 'notice' you do not think the mantra, this noticing may be a very subtle thought activity, but can very well go along with PC (or you are in CC, whatever). In this state, just staying with it, is usually enough. Btw. Lawson, in the 'steps' the first instruction which the new initiate gets is, that he should not hold on to the mantra, if he feels that it disappears. But if he 'feels' that it disappears, it is a thought, right? The biggest problem here seems to be that it might be impossible for one to decide what (who) it is that notices the absence of mantra, 'draSTaa' (aka citi-shakti?) or 'aadarsha/shraavaNa', which according to YS III 37 is one/are two of the 'upasarga-s to samaadhi' (te samaadhaav upasargaaH). yogash citta-vRtti-nirodhaH tadaa *draSTuH* (gen.sing. from 'draSTaa') svaruupe 'vasthaanam. .. draSTaa *dRshi-maatraH* shuddho 'pi pratyayaanupashyaH. .. tataH praatibhashraavaNavedanaadarshaasvaadavaartaa jaayante te (those six divine senses are) samaadhaav upasargaa[H], vyutthaane siddhayaH. . puruSaartha-shuunyaanaam guNaanaam pratiprasavaH kaivalyaM, svaruupa-pratiSThaa vaa *citi-shakter* iti.

The obvious reason is that many people here in Finland, and probably many other countries also, started doing TM in the hopes of being able to reduce their BP medication, and stuff. I don't believe TM helps a lot if ones hypertension is due to being genetically predisposed to it. I feel like some component of my BP regulation system (which, I believe is quite complicated) is especially weak, because my BP is like a yo-yo: it seems to skyrocket for almost no reason at all! [FairfieldLife] Radhakrishnan's Giitaa!
It seems to me Radhakrishnan's Giitaa might be one of the best translations/commentaries I'll ever read. For instance, for XIII 12, he gives both Shankara's (anaadimat param) and Raamaanuja's (anaadi matparam) reading of 'anaadimatparam (in devanaagarii written as one continuous sequence) brahma': http://www.flickr.com/photos/66867356@N02/7560460532/ R. himself seems to prefer Shankara's reading (anaadimat param)... In Shankara's reading, -mat is a (redundant) suffix meaning 'having' (no-beginning), because 'anaadi' as a *bahuvriihi* already has the meaning 'having'. As we recall it, Shankara explains that redundant -mat away as a verse filler(?), or somesuch... In Raamaanuja's reading 'mat-' is the compound form of 'my, of me', etc.
[FairfieldLife] Windows brand has a stigma??
http://wmpoweruser.com/nielsen-nokia-only-sold-less-than-30-nokia-lumia-900-in-usa/ From the comments: This does not look good for Nokia or Microsoft. I'm sad to say that I think MS should ditch Nokia. I think MS should follow the Surface strategy and make their own phone. They also need to re-brand the OS around the Xbox brand. I've tried to convince family and friends to adopt WP7.5, and the first thing they tell me is Windows on my phone!? I don't want Windows on my phone. That's what people think anyway, and you cannot convince them one by one -- the Windows brand has a stigma, it doesn't matter how good WP7.5/7.8/8 is.

[FairfieldLife] Once more: Pureview!
Customer review from Amazon (sadly, it's probably impossible to have this camera as such in a Windoze phoney, any time soon...): The camera is obviously the main attraction, and is in itself is worth the money! It is as simple as that. If the 808 were sold as a standalone camera, it would handily beat just about every point-and-shoot camera in nearly every way. Even when shooting at 5MP or 8MP, it easily outclasses even more pro compacts such as the Canon G12. The one seeming deficiency that the 808 PureView would have when compared to those dedicated camera is a lack of optical zoom. This, clearly, has to do with size - there is no way to fit in the optics required, especially when considering the sheer size of the photo sensor included with this phone. To give you an idea, the sensor is twice the size of the G12, whose 5x optical zoom already gives it a 2-inch thick body when retracted. And compared to most ultra-zoom cameras (such as the Canon SX IS series), the sensor in the 808 is 3-4 times as large! Enter the genius of Nokia's PureView technology. This gives you, among other things, Lossless digital zoom. (Yeah there are quotes, I'll get back to why). At full resolution, pictures taken with this phone consist of 34 or 38 megapixels (in 16:9 and 4:3 aspect ratios, respectively). At that resolution, the size of each pixel is equivalent to that of recent 8MP smart phones such as the iPhone 4S or the Samsung Galaxy series. Obviously, photos from those phones can be a bit... meeh... especially in low light conditions. So yeah, scaling up from 8MP of random noise to 38MP of random noise is not really the value proposition Nokia was going for here. Instead, in PureView mode, you will be capturing 8MP, 5MP or even 2MP photos - and you will be amazed! Amazed at how much information is available despite the lower resolution, at the color depth that comes with a much wider dynamic range, and amazed at why the world still thinks more MP == better. You'll truly appreciate how it's not the pixel count that matters, but how you use them. The idea is that by binning several pixels (photo cells) together into larger super-pixels, each resulting pixel receives more light (signal), whereas most of the noise associated with shifting and reading the signal from the CCD remains constant. In turn, this means less noise per resulting pixel, shorter exposure times, less blur. Less noise also means more efficient compression, resulting in even smaller file sizes (despite the cleaner picture!). So why not simply use a cheaper 5MP or 8MP sensor then? So long as the total sensor area is the same, wouldn't you get the same benefits? There are at least two reasons for this. First, would you even be looking at this phone it it was marketed with a 5 Megapixel Camera? For all that we decry the marketing race for higher megapixel numbers despite the resulting deterioration in image quality, we are still allowing ourselves to be fooled by it. By placing a 41 Megapixel label on this thing, Nokia is essentially using metrics that give you a faily accurate representation of its camera performance vis a vis other smart phones in the market today. The second reason is that this allows for the aforementioned lossless digital zoom. In other smart phones (with the exception of video recording modes on the Nokia N8, Sony Ericsson C905a, and a couple of others), once you start to zoom in, you are in effect scaling up an image from its native pixel resolution, just as you would if you enlarged a picture in an image editing program. You are not adding any detail, you are only blurring the original. In contrast, the 808 digital zoom works by reducing the size of each super-pixel, down all the way to its native resolution. So at the far end of the zoom range, you are essentially using only the center portion of the sensor, cropped such that 1 photo cell corresponds exactly to 1 pixel in the resulting image. In simplified terms, you could say that you reduce or eliminate the oversampling that PureView otherwise provides. This, combined with the phone's aspheric lens design and other ingenious solutions, allows for optical performance way its physical size would normally indicate. In fact, in a side-by-side blind test conducted by GSMArena.com, it went on to score higher than the Olympus PEN E-PL2 DSLR camera with its humungous four thirds inch photo sensor (about 2.5x larger than that of the 808). Granted, these were mostly daytime/outdoor photos at the wide range etc etc -- but the fact that this can even happen speaks volumes! One thing I have not yet mentioned is the awesome video and audio recording quality of this phone. Unless you have professional video recording equipment usually reserved for movie studios and broadcasters, there is nothing else no the market that matches the richness in both video and sound (frequency range, dynamic range) that this thing gives.

[FairfieldLife] Little Fame!
Since the daze of Robin Hood, Robin seems to have been a name that gets the ladies (and batmans) wet?? Robin (name) From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Robin was originally a diminutive given name of Robert, derived from the prefix Rob- (hrod, Old Germanic, meaning fame), and the suffix -in (Old French diminutive). More recently, it is used as an independent name. The name Robin is uncommon (but not unique) in being a masculine given name, feminine given name, and a surname. In Europe, although it is sometimes regarded as a female name, it is generally given to males. In North America, it is more popular as a female name - during the 1990s, for example, it was the 325th most popular girl's name and the 693rd most popular boy's name. There are several common variations, including Robyn, Robbin, Robine, Robyne, Robynne, and Robbyn.[1] Robine is a female version of the name Robin. In some cultures Robyn is strictly female. It has its origin in France and is also a very common surname in France. Robin is occasionally found as a surname in English language-speaking countries. Common nicknames are Rob, Robbie or Bobby.[1]
