--- In FairfieldLife@yahoogroups.com, Rick Archer [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: snip He also took a lot of heat over some JAMA article. Wasn't he being sued or something? And the TMO didn't stand by him. Aiee, no. The issue was whether Chopra would sue JAMA and the writer of the article. Two TMO-related organizations were already suing, weren't having much success, and wanted Chopra to join them, but wouldn't pay his legal fees, as I understand it. The article took aim at the TMO in general, but at Chopra in particular, accusing him of dishonesty in submitting his own article to JAMA on Maharishi Ayur-Veda without revealing his financial connections to the TMO (along with his co-authors, Triguna and another big TMO scientific cheese whose name I can't recall at the moment). It was purported to be an expose of the TMO's dirty doings but was in fact a carefully crafted tissue of fractional truths designed to convey an impression contrary to fact. It caused the TMO no end of grief. The writer didn't lie outright, so there wasn't much of a legal case against him, and the suit was eventually dismissed without prejudice. The writer got all kinds of awards for his great courage and dedication to the truth. (This was Andrew Skolnick, whom I mentioned in a different context in another post. Skolnick was a regular participant on alt.m.t some years back, and there's endless analysis of his article and the legal case in the archives if anyone is interested. It's pretty complicated.) Yahoo! Like I said, it was just a low level joke. Not an intended slur on Chopra, though that may have been the result. But there is a pattern, a if there is smoke .. sort of thing in my mind. I have read accounts of Chopra using a very heavy handed lawyer to clamp down on any bad PR. Seeking truth was not the issue, was my impression. Rather it was to such down the story. That may or may not have applied to the credit card story. And the sexual harrassement cases at his center in La Jolla. But there were also a number of stories in the local San Diego papers on Chopra's management style and business practices -- sourced from former employees -- that raised eyebrows. Maybe all false. But in my mind, there is a pattern. And the hard-hitting lawyer appears to be fact -- if transcripts of conversations are to believed. Anyway, there is smoke coming from a number of directions. No actual fires? Perhaps. Perhaps not. I am open, but for me, the jury is still out as to whether all is pure and pristine in Chopra land. But I like the guy's lectures, and some of his books. Yahoo! 'Total horse--,' he called them. But it is hardly Bangert's word against Chopra's lawyer's. She has produced Chopra's American Express credit-card vouchers with the imprint of her escort service The credit card reads, 'Dr. Deepak Chopra Pres. MAPI Inc.' Chopra was the former president and a consultant to MAPI [Maharishi Ayurveda Products International] at the time. Bangert volunteered to take a lie-detector test, which we took her up on -- and which she passed, even after our examiner asked her the same questions four times. When I inquired whether Chopra would be willing to take a lie-detector test, his lawyer said, 'You think Chopra's gonna spend five minutes on this stupid thing?' Maybe not, but Flynn, whose in-your-face tactics a former New York magazine fact-checker described as 'one of the most unpleasant things I've ever endured,' spent nearly 30 highly combative minutes on the phone with me, bandying countercharges, offering a host of defenses, and providing no documentation for either Overall, I asked Flynn to corroborate his assertions or offer evidence to discredit Judy Bangert 26 times in the course of our interview Flynn threatened repeatedly to sue for libel. 'If [Chopra] wants me to tell you to go jump in the f--ing lake -- print whatever you want, and then we'll bring a lawsuit to expose the truth,' was one of his gentler admonitions. {In a startling coincidence, Mr. Flynn is associated with well-known cult-fighting lawyer, Ford Greene. Ford Greene, known for his cases against the Moonies and others, declined to represent Jonie Flint in her case against Chopra because of a conflict of interest through his working relationship with Flynn.} Yahoo! Deepak always struck me as very sweet, unassuming, and good-hearted in those days. I think fame and ambition may have gotten a grip on him. Yahoo! [FairfieldLife] Re: David Lynch coming to Ann Arbor 9/25
Kelly and I just saw him a few weeks ago at the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, NY. We were there helping to teach a course on Sacred Sex (www.artofbeing.com), and Deepak was there teaching a week seminar. I'd worked with him for a few months at MIU-CNL in DC back in 1984-85, and he had asked Maharishi if I could be his main assistant. M chose an Indian couple (Anju and Sushil) instead, which apparently didn't work out well at all. In any case, Deepak recognized me, but did the I'm a celebrity now and you don't have anything to offer me courteous blow-off routine. Understandable, I suppose. But the simplicity and genuine caring that I felt in him back 20 years ago was completely absent. I believe Deepak's true colors have been illustrated in this and some of the previous posts. But how is it that this kind of fraudulant personality still gets play. I mean you can say that the lesser educated may be fair fodder for the evangelists, but Deepak's audience is the sophisticated, well educated, new agers. Do they not recognize what seems so obvious to me? lurk Yahoo! Groups Sponsor ~-- Get fast access to your favorite Yahoo! Groups. Chopra was selling his books hand-over-fist due to TMO efforts at publicity. A large portion of Purusha was dedicated full-time to promoting him, not to mention many of us field volunteers who saw his potential as a great PR figurehead if promoted properly. CHopra was making a LOT of money off the TMO but bowed out as his fame grew to the point where he no longer needed TMO backing to sell his stuff. He also started pocketing his lecturer's fees, rather than donating them to the Maharishi Ayurveda Foundation. He went on later to get authorized by one of the Shanks I'd heard... Hari Sharma. CHopra and Hari really should have known better. Hari had gotten a million dollar long-term grant from MAF around that timeto do research and it was very shady (in a who-gives-a-f-ck- anyway? sort of way) to fail to mention that. Fortunately for Hari, Skolnick didn't realize the time-frame for getting the grant. I didn't find out til years later, and Hari couldn't answer the timeframe question without referring to his notes when I asked him about it. Yeah, I still wonder if there was some element of a set-up or sting on JAMA's part. I wonder whether JAMA may have known much of what it subsequently reported as having discovered after the fact, and deliberately misled Chopra et al. about what was required in the declaration; or at least knew when it received the declaration that it wasn't complete, and instead of sending it back for the authors to fix, or bagging their article entirely, accepted the declaration and went ahead and published the article knowing it was going to cry foul and smear the authors and the TMO. The embarrassment to JAMA for having been hoodwinked was far outweighed by the plaudits it--and especially Skolnick--received for exposing the purported malefactors. Not to exonerate Chopra and Sharma, but I think there was some cooperation from JAMA. I'd love to get Chopra drunk sometime and ask him point- blank exactly what went on. Yahoo!
