By the way, the food should be good for six months after the expiration date. By law, nothing can be sold past it's expiration date! The stores have to pull it from it's shelves and dispose of it. Re: multiple FELV in one house?
There is also a wonderful book called Cat Heaven by Cynthia Rylant. It's a children's book. It always make me cry, but in a good way. It gives me peace. You might try that.I'm a teacher and I also talk to my students about how if animals lived as long as we did who would there be to take care of them. and how God (we can't say God) sends them to us to take care of them while they are here and that we can take care of more because they don't live as long as we do. That's not exactly how I say all that, but you get the gist.twendy [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Kayte,Your little boy sounds so adorable. I liked Marylyn'sadvice on reading him the Rainbow Bridge poem. Ideas to make the car less stressful?
I am very lucky that Mio (who is often sick) loves the car, however many of the furbabes including my other kitty Oscar hate it. They get incredibly stressed out and come home form the vet feeling worse then ever. Does anyone have any tricks that have helped their cats stay calm? I have heard of Feliway and catnip helping, but what else has helped? Are there certain kinds of music that help? What about allowing them to explore the car prior to longer trips? Is the front seat better than the back? I would appreciate hearing your suggestions. Thank you, Kiley

As you already know, I have two - girls (Kelly 16 and Meagan 8). Gunnar (for now) tested ELISA +, with a retest scheduled for December 1.The girls have their second vaccination this Tuesday night. Tanya said to wait an additional two weeks after that.So let me ask you all this:The girls know Gunnar exists. We've brought him up in his carrier to spend time with the family. There's been a bit of mild hissing and a few paw slaps. We also have a cage for Gunnar, since he's just a young guy and might need to be contained for a bit - especially when no one is home. Please let me have your suggestions and hints as how to finally get them all together. I KNOW THAT YOU CAN ONLY MAKE ONE GOOD FIRST IMPRESSION. I don't want to cause permanent harm or resentment by introducing them incorrectly. And I certainly don't want any fighting! How many cats do some of you actually take care of??God bless all of you and your furry friends. And remember: God doesn't make mistakes. You're all together for a reason. It's just a matter of time to find out your reason for living. We got Meagan at the Chicago Ridge Humane Society in 1999 - she showed us her "Dracula fangs" like Kelly has and I knew she was the one. Gunnar, however, was DELIVERED to us like a Domino's pizza - God sent him ringing our doorbell. It didn't matter that I didn't "order" him and it didn't matter what "toppings" he had - God wanted him to live in this house. P.S. To answer Susans questions: We have 3 cats: 2 negatives and one pos. The pos just came to us last week so were still novices and learning. But as far as integration goes, we didnt really do anything special. We really didnt have to since we arent worried about stressing our healthy cats, and Scooter seems comfortable here so theres not a problem in keeping him away from the others and gradually introducing him into the household. One cat (the oldest) was chosen by me, while the other two were strays that picked us probably because they knew they would be cared for. When Karma came to the house about 7 years ago, she and Montana hissed at each other awhile but learned to tolerate one another. Theyve never gotten friendly enough to sleep curled together or groom each other, and on some (rare) occasions one will take a swipe at the other in passing. Now that we have a third, we integrated him by letting him in the house (no cages) and so far, except for some hissing at the food bowls, its been fine. Scooter (FeLV+) can tell that hes third in the hierarchy and walks carefully when Karma is in the house but otherwise seems perfectly comfortable. The negatives can come and go using the cat door, so they arent all three in the house together 24/7 which probably helps keep the peace.

We've got ten little ones - only our most recent addition, Smokey, is Felv+. To date, he has a "private suite". We recently altered the door to allow for a flexiglass lower panel so he can see the other cats but not actually make contact with. The upper half of the door we screened in. We're hoping this helps make him feel a little bit more a part of the household . We're still struggling with the decision on whether or not to integrate with our negatives. ~ Evan Susan Franklin wrote: As you already know, I have two - girls (Kelly 16 and Meagan 8). My son is here, and getting settled in. Zack is on the Prozac, though it's too soon to tell any difference yet, I think. Tang had a complete bowel compaction, and was in the hospital for 4 days, and is now on several medications (he's doing much better now, and is off the antibiotics). Mythic's skin is improving slightly this past week. I found out where Whitey (a local stray tom) lives, sadly, he has been abandoned by his people, as I suspected, but at least now I know where he lives and can feed him on his own porch (the house is empty now), and we've made friends, I petted him for the first time yesterday. He will need to be neutered now that I can touch him (he came right up to me on HIS territory, he was only scared of me at my house, it seems). Ideas to make the car less stressful?
I have the same problem when taking the cats to the vet. Ive found that each cat is different. Montana (an older cat) hates the car but prefers to be allowed to sit on the passenger side floor. (But before you try this for the whole trip, I recommend driving around the neighborhood or a parking lot just in case your cat freaks out and distracts you that can be a disaster! Best if you have a friend go along just in case.) Montana does OK but he drools and poops its a sure way to get a stool sample, though not the most pleasant on the olfactory nerve. My other cat, Karma, prefers the security of the cat carrier, though she cries the entire way to the vet. For very long trips I get drugs from the vet (for the cat, not me) to help them relax. Scoter only had one trip so far, and he did OK in the carrier. Ive never tried drugs for short trips because I dont want anything to affect the results of the physical more than the ride in the car already does, but perhaps Ill give them a little catnip next time and see if it helps.

Phelix likes to drive...He stands on his hind legs and looks out the window. When we arrive hegets up on meand hangs over my shoulder not the least bit concerned. When the vet comes in, Phelix gives him head butts. Antonio likes the car too and loves to look out. Good thing too since I can't seem to find a carrier big enough for him -- boughtone advertised as such but when I picked it upthe handlebroke off. Sick kitty
My neighbors have moved away leaving behind an orange tabby .He is 15 years old .I want to take him in but he is very sick .He has a brown discharge from his eyes and mouth, It's so bad that the fur on his chest and legs are brown. I have never seen any thing like it .I don't know if he will let me catch him and I can't bring him in contact with my cats until I can get him to a doctor. Please someone tell me what it might be. It's killing me seeing him like this .I know he must be suffering. Sheila
Re: Sick kitty
At 15, he may have some dental problems. The brown discharge from the eyes sounds like it could be an upper respiratory infection (uri). Any discharge from the nose? Can you get him inside and put him in the bathroom by himself till you can get him to the vet? Clean him up a little and get some good food in him? It will make it easier to figure out what's going on with him.[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:My neighbors have moved away leaving behind an orange tabby .He is 15 years old .I want to take him in but he is very sick .He has a brown discharge from his eyes and mouth, It's so bad that the fur on his chest and legs are brown. Re: Vet Visit Frustration
I am in NJ . What part of Pa you from your city? My vet is like 15 mins from Pa. But I dont know your city. Maybe he is close. Just a cat vet. Very knowledgable. He does courses all over country. And very reasonale priced too. Checked his entire body..clipped nails checked ears teeth and brushed his coat for 5 mins and baby talked him. I was in there for 15 mins and he answered every questioned i had..charged only 47$ kayte and crackers
re:Ideas to make the car less stressful?
i asked my vet if i should give crackers something cuz he hates the vet ride...my vet told me that it doesn't really have a terrible effect on them..unless they are very old or ill...he said they usually get over it...and as i got home and crackers jump out of his carrier he ran right to food and was purring away...i just hold him on my lap...usually my sister takes me and i hold him i have a neat cloth carrier and i pet him threw thatit is mesh and i say ohh my daddy and kiss him...usually on way home he is fine..my sis thinks that cats are so smart when they first go they think they are gonna get a needle...LOL i think he was scared of my EX vet:) kayte
