Re: Prince says hi :)

2006-11-19 Thread Gina WN
  Hi and Welcome!

Prince is a doll, he's so cute! I love the videos, especially the one of him
going after the milk.

I'm so happy that I found this website. I took in a stray cat 2 months ago
and he was diagnosed with FeLV (both ELISA and IFA positive).

I have 3 other cats in the apartment, and I need to get them all tested to see
if they are infected. :( (This is really my fault. I only know that I need to
de-flea and de-worm a new cat, but I didn't know about FeLV and the fact that
it's transmitted by saliva.) It's been a week since I heard the bad news about
the stray cat. At first it really freaked me out and I cried for 2 whole days,
but now I'm feeling much better. I decided not to worry too much about the
other 3 cats before their test result is out. I already isolated them, BTW.

Anyway, here is something about the stray cat. It's a boy, about 1.5 years
old. I named him Prince. Prince weighs 11 pounds now, compared to 8.5 pounds
2 months ago. He's very pretty, extremely sweet and purrs all the time. He
also has an amazing appetite. I had him neutered on Tuesday.

Here are some videos that I want to share with you:

Yes, he's very very active. I can hardly believe that he is sick.

I have a neighbor who hates cats and started to put rat poisons in his
yard to kill all the cats who comes to his yard - he also shoots cats
and I am so worried about my feral and all other kitties who belong to
someone and go there. .he told me that he already killed three - one
described sounds like my calico feral and haven't seen her last night
and I am very worried. .what is rat poison made out of - is it
attractive to cats? He said that he threw cats who were dead outside of
the fence yesterday, but I did not see anyone in the alley - it's so
awful - I was thinking of warning neighbors with flyers - but is there
anything I can do (putting a rat poison is not illegal - he will claim
that he is trying to kill rats)

RE: another despair - prayer for Rikki - ARF/FIP?

2006-11-19 Thread Hideyo Yamamoto
I know.. I am sorry if sounded defensive - I am just mad at myself - and
I can't help it.

Three different vets including a specialist thought --- looking at the
blood work and clinical symptoms, they all agreed that it was FIP who
killed of my babies - and I knew that before they knew - there was
nothing else they could rule out - and it's been about 6 months since
Naomi started to show the symptoms.. according to the literature. When
epidemic happens, usually it will last about 6 months from the first
incidence and I am so hoping that I am going to see the end of it very
very soon here...

Please know that no one is picking on you. We are asking so many
questions out of total concern for you and your little ones. Each of
use brings some different experiences to the table. I was never very
aware of the dangers of philodendrons with cats until Dixie started
showing some interest in house plants. No other cat had. Needless to
say, I am having to re-home some plants I really like. Today she
reacted very badly to a cologne a friend had on...she wanted
nothing to do with him and she is a very social cat. She even hissed at
him and, in the almost two years I have known her, I have never heard
her hiss at a person. Arsenic is organic as are a large number of
poisons. And people have awful reactions to somethings like new carpet
fumes or glues. ls it possible that someone has used an insecticide or
something that you would not know about?

We all know how much you love your cats and what good care you take of
them. Please don't take any of the questions or comments wrong.

It is very easy to get paranoid with FIP. I always worry about
it if someone misses a meal or seems to be sleeping more than usual.
But don't let yourself be so convinced that everyone who has died in the
past month or two or three is the result of FIP. I think you have
something else going on. Some may have had FIP but others? Keep
looking. I think there is more to it.

Dry FIP usually takes at least 2-4 months from the first little
sign of trouble -- lethargy, loss of appetite -- before the cat dies.
Weight loss is gradual. At the end the cat is truly anorexic in
appearance but it takes time to get there. Neurological signs do not
occur in all cases. And it is highly unusual to lose so many in such a
short period of time. Not unheard of but rare and usually involving a
commercial cattery with a lot of questionable breeding practices.

You need to start doing a necropsy on everyone who dies. That
is the only way you can be certain if it was dry FIP. Until then, don't
make that assumption. Otherwise you may miss something that is
treatable or preventable.

I would definitely post flyers around the neighborhood, warning the
neighborhood that a person in the neighborhood is putting out rat poison
with the intent to kill stray cats that enter his yard. I wouldn't mention
his name, just tell people to PLEASE keep their cats indoors.

There's really nothing you can do other than build a cat fence, and keep all
the cats in your yard. There are many different cat safe fence products out
there. Keep vitamin K on hand, if your vet will give you a vial (and
syringes to inject it, or you can get pills, but they wont work as quickly),
and you can treat the poisoned cats. (assuming the neighbor is using the
anticoagulant type rat poison)

One of my friends had a similar problem with a neighbor. I contacted our

Incidentally, this neighbor apologized to my friend out of the blue
recently asked her to forgive them...and these people used to be absolutely

Re: OT my neighbor is killing all the cats- SOS

2006-11-19 Thread Lance
I hate hearing stories like this. Definitely relay your concerns to
animal control and/or the police. If you're going to put fliers up,
do NOT mention this guy's name. Sounds like he's trouble enough
without getting the idea that he needs to get a lawsuit going. And a
pit bull is actually a bad idea. I'm not saying that pit bulls are
inherently evil, or that this won't keep cats out of his yard, but if
a feral strays through that area, it could be a death sentence. I'm
assuming that since the guy is a huge jerk, then he'll do his best to
train the pit bull to be a jerk, too.

Prayers for Inky and Bandy. I hope the next update brings good news.
Bless you all.
