Re: hypothethical question....

2007-03-29 Thread Gussies mom
You absolutely have to tell them. We ran into this with a hoarding case. Some
of the cats still have to be restested. 8 out of 28 were FeLV positive. I
adopted out 3 cats that were negative to a couple who had other cats. I made it
very clear the cats they were getting had been exposed and needed to be
retested by their vet in 3 months. Even if they were negative after 3 months I
would have told them. They said it was fine as their cats were well vaccinated.
They even discussed it with their vet.

If you are educated about FeLV and pass that education along to the people
who are getting the cats you will be suprised. I thought there would be a lot
of resistence, but there wasn't as much as I thought when I thoroughly
explained the situation to them. 2 cats also went to households where there
were no other animals. I encouraged them to retest in 3 months. I told them
that if the cats still test negative they probably had a natural immunity,
though we vaccinated them anyway.

  Education is key

Hey Marissa,

I cried reading your post this morning. I am hoping
the kids who are testing across the library from me
aren't watching. That old familiar lump kept popping
up in my throat as I read along, first when you talked
about giving him the only gift you could at that
point, then when you spoke of laying him on his pillow
while they did the catheter and crying, and then again
when you spoke of your dad, and how wonderfully
understanding and kind he was to you. That kind of
kindness is just invaluable. I laughed when you said
that you thought half the u.s. population is praying
for you. I felt that way too when I came here when
Cricket was sick. After he died, people here told me
that he would visit me again. A few mornings after
Cricket died, I woke up and looked down beside my bed
and there was a cricket there. Granted, it was not
alive, but still...usually we have a lot of crickets
around november in texas and we just didn't have a
cricket season that year. I hadn't seen any, so it
shocked me to see this lone cricket by my bed. And
Cricket was always 'different'...lol, so it would not
surprise me that he would leave a dead cricket by my
bed to try to communicate with me.

I just want to tell you how much I think of you that
you did all you could for Slinky. Bless you for your
unconditional and endless love for Slinky.

Dear Elizabeth,
I am so sorry for Mama Kitty's passing. Her picture is just beautiful. I
know she is
doing better now (rolling in the sun somewhere just as I pictured her on her
last day).
The hard part is knowing the pain that you, her kind, generous, loving
caretaker must struggle
with in her crossing. Now I am picturing you, sitting with a cup of tea on
the porch in Mama's favorite
spot, feeling the warmth of the sun and knowing that it is really a big hug
from Mama and
all of us on this list. Ok, now I have to go blow my nose...

was not getting enough oxygen to her brain. She couldn't stand - she was
just like a little rag doll. Her back was very sensitive - she was
obviously in pain - I am not sure why. I talked to her. She was ready to
go. She didn't want to be kept alive by extreme measures only to waste away
and be in pain. It was a very hard decision but I believe it was the right
one for her. She was very close to death and she was gone in no more than a
second or two - she was very calm.

There is nothing I wouldn't have done for her - no matter how much it
cost...but no amount of money could have given her back her quality of
life. I believe that to have kept going by extreme measures would have been
selfish of me. She made it almost a year after her first crash with an
excellent quality of life. This all happened so fast.

I am so glad she slept with me last night. She knew that she was loved.
I am so grateful for the time we had together.

This is so very hard. We had such a close bond.

before I adopted her, and I have kept her up to date on all her shots. It has
been very very hard for me. I don't know if I will ever heal. I miss having her
around, am wondering if I can ever have another kitty. I would make sure if I
adopted they would be negative and have all their shots and not be a stray- but
I don't know if my apartment will be safe or if it will have the virus still
around. How long should I wait?

Marissa Johnson [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
Hi all. I guess I need to complete the updates on Slinky, huh?

Yes, he went to the bridge last night. I was having second thoughts all day
yesterday...he, of course, perked up a bit, sat in the window sill again
(hadn't done that in ages), and was still drinking, eating, and breathing fine.
I even started to wonder if his nose looked pinker.

But I decided to go to the vet appointment and ask her what she thought - and
that all important question, what would you do if he were your kitty?

Right before we left I think I finally understood that it really was time.
It occurred to me that on Sunday he was very cuddly with me and initiating some
cuddle time on his own. But yesterday he didn't want anything to do with me.
And when we left the vet on Monday, someone said he'd tell me when it was time,
and I remember thinking, I think he already has told me but I didn't want to
believe it. I think his spirit left on Sunday...I think all that cuddling was
him saying goodbye and beginning to get ready for the journey.

So we went to the vet and I asked her if she thought his nose looked pinker.
She looked at his gums, etc. and assured me that they were not. I was tempted
to have her do another CBC, but that seemed like just adding to the torture
he'd already been through. Without my even asking, the vet said, If this were
my cat, this is what I would be doing. Not only is he not getting any better,
but he's actually getting steadily worse...and he's just going to suffer if we
wait much longer. She of course pointed out that I had the option of waiting,
but that seemed like it would just drag out the inevitable. He was so weak the
last couple days that he couldn't even get back on the bed once he'd gotten
down.

The vet explained everything in detail and even shaved some of his fur for me
since I'd forgotten I wanted a sample (good cuz what she got was way better
than anything I could've gotten with a scissors). Then she gave him the
tranquilizer (I think she did it quickly so I wouldn't have time to change my
mind...knowing that was best for me and for Slinky). She said it would take a
few minutes for it to work, so they left and I just held him and cried and told
him how much I loved him. Thanked him for letting me share in his life and
told him I was giving him the only gift I could at this point. The room we
were in had a beautiful painting of the bridge, so I showed it to him and told
him that was where he was going.

They had put a sheep skin-like pad on the table and when they came back I
laid him on that and put his head on his favorite pillow (he loved to knead on
this sqush pillow I have). She thought they might have to put a catheter in
his front leg to get the needle in since his veins were so small, but she was
able to do it in his back leg. Once it was in, I just held him and cried and
cried some more. But I know he was in peace.

He visited me this morning - as I was waking up I could hear the birds
outside my window and I distinctly heard a meow (I remember thinking that I
didn't know of a bird that meowed). When it happened I got chills. And when I
woke up fully I realized that he was letting me know that he's happy and he
loves me.

I'm actually doing much better than I expected to be. After the vet
appointment my friend took me out to dinner and then to ben and jerry's
(self-medicating is always good!), which distracted me and that helped a lot.
Of course when I got home I completely lost it, but I knew that would happen.
I called dad and he was wondeful about telling me I did all the right things,
that he loves me, and not to worry about paying all those bills back 'till some
time in the future.

Today I relaxed in the morning and then went and got my hair cut (my stylist
is dad's partner and the owner of the salon...so he has lots of experience
with losing kitties) and did some shopping. I got a stuffed kitty that looks
just like Slinky, so he'll be my new sleeping buddy. I thought I would lose it
when I came home tonight, but I just choked up for a bit and really was okay.
I know all the prayers and thoughts everyone is sending me are helping a ton!!!
I think half the population of the US is praying for me and checking on me!

You guys have been absolutely amazing and having people to talk to who've
been there and understand how this is has been an unbelievable help! Thank you
all so much for all your support!!!

I know this is kinda long, but since you've all been reading so much about
Slink, I thought you might want to know some of the details of his crossing.
Thanks again for everything...I know I couldn't get through this without you!!

someone you love, you made her life so much better. Would you rather erase
those two years?

Give yourself some time to grieve but don't rule out another stray or special
needs cat. If you made that choice years ago you would not have had Satine at
all.

Re: Slinky - Please add to the CLS

2007-03-29 Thread Gussies mom
I'm so sorry..
I know how hard it is. If my boyfriend hadn't bee holding me when I put my
second FeLV kitty to sleep I really think I would have snatched her from the
table and ran, even though I knew it was the right thing to do.

I had the vet shave some hair from the belly of one of my FeLV cats after he
was PTS. He had the most beautiful golden belly fur. I put it in the jar with
his ashes. Now I can pet him any time I want.

In memory of Bagheera

2007-03-29 Thread Debbie

I was shifting thru pics the other day and found this one of Bagheera. I brought this fella home from the airport where I worked. We had a lot of temps working at that time and they were hitting at him, licking, etc... At the same time I had just got married and we bought a new home. I scooped Bagheera up and took him home. He lived with us for nearly 2 years. He weighed 20+ pounds. He had been someone's pet because he had been neutered, however they also discovered a bb lodged in his skull where someone had shot him. He was the most lovable, gentle giant around. Unfortunately we believe a coyote may have got him. He went out one morning and never returned. Normally he never left the yard. We miss him dearly and he left his mark upon our hearts.

Re: satine

Hi Jenna,

First, I am so sorry to hear about your beloved
Satine. What a beautiful name. We all know here how
hard it is to lose a beloved furbaby. The good news
is that with time, your grief will become less. The
trick is to think about all the wonderful memories you
have of Satine and to allow yourself to grieve. This
group helped me so much when I lost my Cricket, and
even though I don't have anymore FeLV+ kitties, I've
never left the group. Cricket died a year and a half
ago. You have found a good place for information and
healing. Also, there is a pet loss support website
you should check out:

http://rainbowsbridge.com/Grief_Support_Center/Grief_Support_Home.htm

This poem, on the same website, really helped me too:

http://rainbowsbridge.com/Poem.htm

As far as opening your home to another kitty, I think
that is a wonderful idea. I adopted our Smookie in
Feb. and had lost Cricket the Nov. before, so it was
about 4 months. Smookie really helped to take my mind
off losing Cricket. I was not worried about the virus
being in the home. Most of us here believe that the
virus is very hard to pass without direct blood
contact. The virus can't live long outside it's host,
so I would think after a couple of weeks and getting
new food/water bowls and a new litter box (or bleach
the one you have); you shouldn't have much to worry
about.

Please keep us posted if you adopt another furbaby.
And if you need anything or just to vent/talk, we're
here.

:)

To Belinda: Re: Fred Update

2007-03-29 Thread wendy
Hey Belinda,

I called my vet yesterday to ask if he thought that I
should start adding potassium to Julie's subQ fluids.
She is hyperT, and gets Tapazole/Meth. compounded 2x
per day. Her back legs are pretty weak, and after
reading about Fred's weak back legs, and that you are
supplementing him with potassium, I called to check
with my vet. He said not to do that because potassium
overdoses are serious and happen often, and that we'd
have to take her blood all the time to check the
potassium levels. I don't think he looked at her
potassium numbers though. My questions are these: 1)
When I go home tonight to check her numbers off the
last bloodwork she had, which number am I looking for?
Is potassium pk? 2) If her numbers are low, do you
think it would be wise for me to supplement some
considering the weakness in her hind legs? I do agree
that I don't want to take her blood more than we
already are, about every four months. She's so old
and small. 3) If I do supplement, where do I get
potassium and how much should I do?

Thanks for your advice,
Julie and I really appreciate it,
:)

Answering what I would do in my personal circumstances and answering
what I might do if I were part of an organized rescue might yield
different answers... First, let me say, from my personal experience of
having a healthy neg kitten from a felv litter, (he's now 3yrs and has
never been sick); having mixed for years without a single neg turning
pos; from the extensive reports of the same from the members of this
list, I'd be fairly confident that this kitten would not turn up pos
someday. That said, I would still disclose his history to any potential
adopters, (along with a brief education about felv, suggestions about
re-testing and to be watchful for any signs of illness). I understand
the logic of placing as many animals as possible, about how any home is
better than the alternative of life on the street, or being killed in a
shelter, but I get far too attached to my charges to not do everything
in my power to insure they will be safe and happy in their new homes. I
would just consider it as part of making sure that the potential home
and the kitten are a good match. Each animal is an individual to me,
not just a statistic. This little fellow is even more special because
he has beaten the odds of an early death and he has found himself in the
hands of someone that cares enough to give him a chance at a full life.
I would plan on telling his potential adopters his full history and have
faith that this little guy would continue to be blessed in finding a
forever home with someone that would appreciate how very special he is.
I have a feeling that there is someone out there that would recognize
how blessed they are to have him.

There is no waiting period. The FELV virus dies within minutes to hours
outside the cat's body. AIR kills it. Bleach and disinfectants are not
needed, just letting it DRY completely kills it. I'm sorry for your loss.
But you really don't have anything to worry about. Just change the
litterbox, wash it well, and let it dry in the sun, and wash and dry all the
bowls, and that's really all that is needed. Beds, perches, etc, cannot
carry the virus because they are not wet and warm. Lysol, however is TOXIC
to cats, so DON'T try to disinfect the carpeted and cloth surfaces, as
you'll be doing much more harm than good. It takes time to heal, but when I
lost my Moogie girl in 2001, I went out and got another cat to take her
place. While Tigger will never be Moogie, he did fill up that big painful
hole in my heart with his cute and crazy kitten antics.

What a beautiful name for a kitty! I'm so sorry you had to lose her.

The virus is not supposed to stay alive outside the body in a dry environment
more than an hour. I never throw anything out. I wash my bowls just like
normal. I will put a non-FeLV cat in a carrier I just had a positive cat in as
long as the healthy cat is vaccinated without ever cleaning it.

I have always mixed my FeLV cats with my healthy cats. Even my FIV cat has
never caught it, but they are all vaccinated.

Most vets will tell you to throw everything out and wait 6 months. I think
they do that so they won't get sued if the new cat ends up positive, which it
may just have bee harboring anyway.

I no longer fear FeLV and try to spread the work so others won't, either.

If you are worried about a new cat getting it, you might want to consider
giving another FeLV cat a chance at life.

I agree. People should be informed. If they recoil even after you tell them the
cat is negative and probably will never turn positive, then what would they do
if the cat gets sick with something else?

I don't know about other states, but in GA rescues are regulated by the Dept
of Agriculture. We have to maintain records on every cat entering or leaving
the shelter - Where they came from - signed surrender forms or forms from AC -
testing dates, where the tests were done and the results, shot records with
vaccine vile labels, dewormings, proof of spay/neuter by sexual maturity.

If cats test positive we have to quarenteen them or put in a foster home.

These things are all put in the records for the adopter.

If that cat ended up testing positive and started looking through records and
saw the sibling was positive, the shelter could be shut down.

Don't rule out rescue even though your heart is breaking in to. Imagine what a

However, there are no guarantees in life except that we will all leave this

she will visit you.

I joined this list because my kitty died on Sunday from feline lukemia she
also had feline hiv. She was a stray I adopted two years ago, and when I first
adopted her I tested her and she came back negative. I think she contracted it
before I adopted her, and I have kept her up to date on all her shots. It has
been very very hard for me. I don't know if I will ever heal. I miss having her
around, am wondering if I can ever have another kitty. I would make sure if I
adopted they would be negative and have all their shots and not be a stray- but
I don't know if my apartment will be safe or if it will have the virus still
around. How long should I wait?

Re: To Belinda: Re: Fred Update

2007-03-29 Thread Belinda

Hi Wendy,
Sorry for your troubles with Julie. I am almost positive my vet told
me when I was in there 2 days ago that when giving oral potassium any
they don't need is discarded through their urine which I had never heard
before. I posted this question on the vet list I'm on but haven't
gotten a reply yet, I'll let you know soon as I do.

I do know my other vet told me not to worry about the other cats eating
Fred's food with the potassium in it, so who knows. I was worried about
that too.

Fred is not doing good today, he isn't eating at all and he vomited
about 4 hours after he got his meds this morning. He hasn't eaten
anything since. I just gave him some pepcid, I have to give him his
clavamox at 9PM so I guess I'll have to syringe feed him enough to coat
his tummy, we have to get rid of that infection.

Looks like as soon as we can, we'll be doing another tube since Fred
isn't cooperating. His kidney values are all almost back to normal, I
will not sit by and let him slowly starve to death or worse yet get
hepatic lipidosis. It's his choice, eat on his own or get a tube so I
won't feel bad about it.

I'm will assist feed but I've never been good at it so in the 2 or 3
weeks we have to wait before we can do another tube he'll probably be in
horrible shape again, that's what upsets me so.

Re: To Belinda: Re: Fred Update

Sorry Wendy should have read the whole email before I sent. I get
the potassium gluconate at the local pharmacy, it's over the counter
Nature Made brand and for 100, 550mg tablets it is $4.00 a bottle. Fred
weighted 8lbs 9ozs when he started getting it and he was getting 1 and
1/4 tablet twice a day. His potassium got to the normal range 4.5, it
was 3.8 when we started, while this is the low end of normal, it is too
low for a CRF cat, they should be in the mid 4 range. After he was at
4.5, I lowered his dose to 3/4 tablet twice a day and he dropped back
down to 3.8 again so for the last week or so he's been getting 1 and 1/2
tablet twice a day to try and get him up again, haven't done blood work
yet to see where we are.

*
He is a page where it helps you figure what you need as far as a dose:*

http://members.bellatlantic.net/~vze2r6qt/supplies/potassium.htm#PotassiumGluconate

*Lots of info here, high phosphorus can also cause back end weakness:*

http://www.felinecrf.org/symptoms.htm#minerals

More info:*

That whole website is very informational.

Re: To Wendy: Re: Fred Update

2007-03-29 Thread Belinda
Wendy here is the reply I got about the potassium supplements from
one of the vets on the vet list I'm on:

They potentially will as long as there is enough kidney function to do
so. While most cats with CRF waste potassium, those nearing end stage
or with acute
on chronic disease may not be able to get rid of excess potassium very
well. It is probably hard to over do it with oral potassium, but
proper monitoring

should be done in order to assess therapy.

My questions as posted:

Hi Vets,
I have a question, I am giving Fred potassium supplements, he is CRF
and his potassium was low. I'm positive I heard my vet say you can't
give too much orally because they will pee out what they don't need. I
know this is the case with vitamin B but had not heard that about
potassium, is that true, they will pee out what they don't need?

Don't get your hopes up that you'll get a negative. You may. You can't rely
on the ELISA alone. But realize that a lot of FeLV+ cats have a really good
life span. (Someone who adopted a special needs kitten from me had an FeLV+
cat -- who the vet told her to euthanize -- who lived to be at least 13. I had
one who tested positive for FIV and FeLV who was around 18 when viral pneumonia
finally took her. And a lot of people on this list have had OLD feLV+ cats
too.) So don't let a positive rattle you. Feed her well, love her a lot, and
she'll live well.

year! I love her so much and I can't imagine my life without her. All of the
web pages I've looked at are so confusing and contradicting. Please give me
any advice you can offer! I would really appreciate it!

Keep in mind that some airlines (Southwest for one) do not allow the
transport of live animals.

MC,

It's my understanding that if I get the job I can fly free anytime there
is avaliable room.

So, we can transport kitties on my days off. I'm single with one extreme
geriatric kitty and a horse who is soon to be boarded with a good friend.
I WANT to travel so bad... :) Look out world, here I come!!
