Thanks very much for the research on Giardia. My vet has sent us Panacur as the Metronidazole did not work and she (MeMe) could not tolerate Drontal. Re: was - Update on Kisa, now liver shake ingredients
I believe, from all the other info out there, that it is the GREEN tomatoes, stems and leaves that are the poisonous parts. The red/ripe tomatoes thet we normally consume and that are used in tomato juice contain only trace amounts of Solanine and are not poisonous. From the ASPCA: http://www.aspca.org/site/PageServer?pagename=pro_apcc_ask_peoplefoods_state=tomatoes The green parts of the tomato plant are considered toxic because they contain solanine, which has the potential to produce significant gastrointestinal and central nervous system effects. However ripe tomatoes, the part of the plant typically used in food products, are not toxic. Therefore, we would not expect any poisoning-related issues with the tomato content of your cat food. Here are a few other sites with info on Solanine Tomaotes: http://ntp-server.niehs.nih.gov/index.cfm?objectid=6F5F05AB-F1F6-975E-79F11EF81F6A5475 http://www.whfoods.org/genpage.php?tname=georgedbid=62 http://www.floridata.com/ref/l/lyco_lyc.cfm http://www.trustedhands.com/content/id267.html http://www.cfainc.org/articles/plants.html If you can find any other info - NOT taken from the Feline Future stories, I would be very interested in it. Phaewryn, I think you are right about the success of FortiFlora having to do with the fact that cats actually like it and eat it. My vet is suspicious of anything out of Purina, but thinks that they got this one right. A friend found it on line for $16.00 a box (of 30 packets) with an $8.00 shipping rate. The medication was mostly found with cyanuric acid, and hundreds of other samples that were sent in tested positive for melamine. The contaminants were found in pet foods that have not been recalled.ExperTox said that the highest level of acetaminophen was found in a dog food sample submitted by a pet food manufacturer, but the lab is not identifying the company. The FDA is now investigating the findings from the lab and a FDA spokesperson says that: what's significant is these things are there. They don't belong there. _ Hotmail to go? Re: was - Update on Kisa, now raw feeding
I started feeding raw about 2 months ago, and now i'm having some second thoughts. I'm just not sure about it yet. It sounds so much healthier, and i'm hoping my two older, fatter cats will lose some weight on the raw. Most of my cats love the food more than they ever liked canned/dry, but then I read about Salmonella and intestinal parasites that could be in raw. Plus Koda died a month ago of organ failure due to unknown causes. She was old and diabetic, but I have that lingering uncertainty that possibly the raw food may have harmed her. I'm still trying to read more info on the raw, but it is the same as everything else, you have people strongly for or against it, both with good arguments. I just want to do what is healthiest for my babies. RE: To Cassandra and Kisa
Good news! Happy thoughts for Kisa! As for feeding the raw food-I don't think I could do it. I won't cook my husband steaks or hamburger that are pinkish just because of the parasite issue (I don't any meat or fish-but he and the fur kids do). Of course I've been told that it's much worse in chicken and pork anyway-that pork is horrifically loaded with parasites-but that wasn't told to me by an expert. But, I think with all the problems with cat food (and the waste products used in it), I'm going to start making my own-or at least experimenting with it. Does anyone have any ideas about what I could give Bandit to promote urinary health? He takes Science Diet C/D to prevent crystals from forming in his urinary tract/bladder or something like that. So far it's helped tremendously. I don't want to go back to those problems, but I do want to feed him fresher food that I know where it is coming from. Plus his food is so expensive, and I feed it to all the cats for simplicity in feeding arrangements. Are there supplements I can give him to prevent the crystals/neutralize his pee? Sorry this is better suited for the off topic place-I can move there once I get home from work (my home computer checks those messages). Hopefully she can get more of those red blood cells back into circulation soon. Re: outdoor enclosures
I can tell you what worked wonderfully for me long before people considered cat enclosures. My father took a 12 foot long chain link dog kennel that was 6 foot wide and 6 foot tall, cut a hole in it very high and fit ductwork into the hole. The cats (Ebony and Mitu) were able to go thru a pet door on the inside of a bathroom window, go thru the ductwork onto a platform then down a ramp. I used an extra piece of chain link for the topper but there are better and easier things available now. This was almost 18 years ago. I am just now having the kennel taken down (I will reuse it on the farm). All of it is in great condition. I put plastic milk boxes and other stuff in it to keep them entertained. They would sleep in the ductwork during the hottest times and really worry me. Now I would have a door to block it off then as well as during cold winter days (heating costs have really gone up). These are easy to put up, strong enough to provide protection to your little friends (dogs, cats, hawks whatever), portable, and generally great. Especially if you put some cat safe plants in there (Dixie has a large goat feeder filled with catnip + cat grass to roll around in the sunroomwhen she gets an outdoor enclosure it will have a small child's wading pool full of such if I can't put the enclosure on grass). A note on thatif you do put the enclosure on dirt, make sure nothing can dig in. (You can tell I've moved back to the country). And don't forget to check on her a lot. I put a padlock on the gate in the city because of kids. I don't know your circumstances but please feel free to ask about this if you think it will meet your needs. Ebony was a feral who decided to live with me (I didn't like cats but he didn't give a %^*((^%% since I had the only central a/c in the neighborhood and the softest heart). He remained indoor/outdoor after he convinced me he was the emperor of my universe until we moved. It was one thing for him to wander the alleys he grew up in. It was another to wander an entirely foreign area. By the time we moved he was around 9 (best guess) and ready to stay in most of the time anyway. If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow man. Thank you so much. We are both much better. Phelix's eye looks 110% better and he's not scratching himself like crazy. The vet says it's his allergies -- I need to be better about applying his transdermal compounded benedryl. We have a severe drought here in the south and the air quality is just terrible. It's so hard to get mad at a cat for being a cat too. I can relate, Phaewryn. Never thought of the soft paws as a solution -- not a bad idea. I worry so about those sores -- Phelix has such a bald tummy and doesn't miss the inside of his back legs either. I just want him to be comfortablebut I worry when he starts chewing. He's rubbed a few places raw. I know he truly itches a lot -- and I've tried so many things...but I do wonder if there isn't a compulsive component to the behavior. Habits are so hard to break. Still...I'm so afraid that any drug that would modify a compulsive behavior might have an effect on his purrrfect personality. I need to do a better job of staying on top of things to keep him as symptom-free as possible. elizabeth On 6/5/07, [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: That's a fairly typical antibiotic/steroid eye ointment. It's very dangerous for the flies -- this I do know Haha. They love their moths too, Melissa :0) The treasured ancient llama sweater is a favorite 'get stuck' place here...along with curtains and the blankets hanging off the bed. I had a man here at the house yesterday looking over the outside of my house for repairs. I'm replacing ALL the windows in my house. Every one of my screens has holes put there by my dear fur family. I asked him about getting windows that open from the top (or screens that aren't so flimsy I could push a hole in them with my fingernail). He really didn't get it until I started pointing to the evidence (i.e. -- big shredded holes). I even asked if we could install the windows upside down! (The windows have to be replaced for reasons other than my poor shredded screens...but I want this to be a consideration). He's going to research the options for me and give me an itemized list of options in about a week. I'm still thinking about what Phaewryn said about chicken wire over the windows... I wish I had a big window seat in every window for the babies. I think I have about 12-15 bird feeders of various types and a wonderful variety of birds. Yeah, no kidding. I always have scratches somewhere. I'm always using Neosporin on some part of my bod! Especially as the triplets are still growing and getting new ideas about what they can (as much as possible) and cannot do (we can't?). Consciousness is Causal and Physicality is its Manifestation. Re: was - Update on Kisa, now liver shake ingredients
I'm feeding Dixie Primal raw. Mixed with carrots and broccoli no yet. And she loves it. It comes in cubes, pre-mixed and balanced and easy for those of us who are vegetarian. I mix hers with some bottled water too. It is pretty concentrated and Dixie is accustomed to Fancy Feast and foods like that --- lots of water and not as much real food. Raw feeding can be tricky, especially for our positives, because it's easy to be unbalanced. A great resource (online) for me has been the HolistiCat Forum - http://www.holisticat.com/ Besides raw, they share recipes for cooked and have discussions about the better commercial foods as well as pre-made frozen raw, etc. Kat (Mew Jersey) On Wed, 6 Jun 2007, Belinda wrote: I've never seen a green cherry tomato, but that aside *and this is my opinion only* why tempt fate when dealing with an already compromised immune system. Yes it may be safe for most cats, even positive cats, but I would die if *my cat* was the one cat it wasn't safe for. It just isn't worth it to me when it can be left out. *To be honest with you I will always wonder if Bailey didn't get sick because of the raw food I was feeding him*, yes he did very well for about 6 months, got chubby, seemed to feel good but then he got very sick and and less than 6 months later was gone. He had *NEVER* been sick in all his 11 years before that, so was it just a coincidence ... possibly, but I will NEVER know for sure and I will never feed raw again, just in case. -- No virus found in this incoming message.
