[Felvtalk] Cat Foof

2011-03-28 Thread Katy Doyle
What kind of food do you feed your cats?

I was feeding the Blue Buffalo and I really liked it, but it is getting too
expensive because of my furlough days at work.

I'm looking for something affordable but still good for cats that are FeLV+.

Thanks,
Katy

You may want to supplement what ever food you chose with chicken,
ground beef or tuna. I've been able to get whole chicken at 69 or 79
cents a pound near the end of sell by date and recently picked up a
couple of hundred cans of tuna at 39 cents each. When you figure out
the per pound price you are paying a lot less than cat food and using
all of the product. Before anyone jumps on me, the tuna is for
putting meds in and is usually divided by 6 cats or by 2 cats and a
dog. I would never feed it entirely.

I can feed 7 cats and a dog for 3-4 days with a whole chicken. Same
with hamburger.

I have found that my cats, even Amber my felv cat does not care for the more
expensive/healthy food. I fed her that at first and after she got past her
starvation mode,(a time when she was grateful for anything to eat), she would
not eat it as well. I switched to the Meow Mix shredded with gravy and they all
love that. I tried feeding my other cats the healthy stuff as well and they
tried to cover it up like it was a bowel movement..LOL.

Amber will eat cooked chicken but my other cats won't eat anything but cat

I aree with supplementing their junk food cat food with real meat if you can

really a healthy brand... It is not cheap in price though.

I can not emphasize this enough.  The very best food for your cat is the food
s/he will eat.  Our perception of what a good food is and a cat's is usually
polar opposites.  I feed the highest quality food mine will eat.  Right now
that happens to be the Fancy Feast pate styles - they are grain free and mine
love them.  For now anyway.

Good luck

Re: [Felvtalk] Cat Foof

2011-03-28 Thread Natalie
I always use tuna or mackerel for trapping cats or having them eat their
meds - great disguise! I think it's OK to use fish once in a while, as long
as it's not the only diet, especially for male cats. It's a great idea to
add cooked meats to the canned food, but you have to start slowly so that
you don't upset their tummies. Anytime one changes food, it should be done
by mixing small portion of new with the old, and slowly increasing the
proportion until the desired amount or total change is achieved. Cats'
tummies have to get their enzymes working for new foods, or else there could
be some runs!
BTW - Nicker's Biocoat is a very good supplement, biotin.

Because of many cats having different tastes for dry food, we mix all the
good quality foods together - that way, each can pick and choose - and they

You may want to supplement what ever food you chose with chicken,
ground
beef or tuna. I've been able to get whole chicken at 69 or 79 cents
a pound
near the end of sell by date and recently picked up a couple of
hundred cans

of tuna at
39 cents each. When you figure out the per pound price you are
paying a lot
less than cat food and using all of the product. Before anyone
jumps on me,
the tuna is for putting meds in and is usually divided by 6 cats or
by 2

cats and a dog. I would never feed it entirely.

I can feed 7 cats and a dog for 3-4 days with a whole chicken. Same
with

hamburger.

2011-03-28 Thread MaiMaiPG
Very true. I have to keep pumpkin and probiotics on hand for the
ferals. And hope they eat most of their meals at Mom's.
Unfortunately they roam and there is nothing I can do about that. We
TNR those who hang around and have managed to bring some inside but
there are too many and Mom is too fragile for any more inside cats. At
this stage, she has to pay someone to clean the litter box and feed
the ferals when I am not around.

idea to
add cooked meats to the canned food, but you have to start slowly so
that
you don't upset their tummies. Anytime one changes food, it should
be done

by mixing small portion of new with the old, and slowly increasing the
proportion until the desired amount or total change is achieved. Cats'
tummies have to get their enzymes working for new foods, or else
there could

be some runs!
BTW - Nicker's Biocoat is a very good supplement, biotin.

The ferals at my Mom's prefer Purina dry + whatever treats I come up
with. I suspect that foods without a lot of artificial coloring would
be best. My two boys like the Purina but they get is more as a treat
than a regular food. No matter what you feed, please keep a close eye

Are you coming then? asked God.

Soon, replied the whiskered angel,

I'm taking some time off from rescue due to my husband's illness. He has liver failure and is not a candidate for a transplant. He has been hospitalized2 times this monthand once last month he was placed into a skill nursing facility since the 18th of February after the first trip to the hospital.
He is in the end final stage of his disease his liver has stopped working.
Can die at any given time. He is being given all the pain meds he wants for comfort so he will most likely fall asleep an never wake up again.
I want to make myself available at all times for him.
He is only 64 years old... I know to some of you that may sound old but it isn't really.
Hospice has been part of this as well to help me cope with all of this.Hospice isavailable to me 24 hours a day.

Sincerely,
Terrie

2011-03-28 Thread MaiMaiPG
When I can, I keep back fatty pieces of chicken and whatever else.
They get put into bags and used in soup when the cats need to gain
weight for cold weather. A neighbor gave me lots of butter from the
bottom of his freezer and I will add that too. This winter I put a
snuggle safe under the water bowl to keep it from freezing as fast.
They deerve any help we can give them. The ones who have come in have
been the most wonderful companions. The ones who haven't are
wonderful, brave, smart cats who just don't want to live with a person
or haven't had the opportunity. One sadness is that so many have left.

The ferals at my Mom's prefer Purina dry + whatever treats I come up
with. I suspect that foods without a lot of artificial coloring would
be best. My two boys like the Purina but they get is more as a treat
than a regular food. No matter what you feed, please keep a close eye
for recalls.

Same
with
hamburger.

Sixty-four is young, these days and in this country. I'm sure you are correct

You are probably already spending precious time with him rather than reading

It is difficult, but I was so glad to be there with her.

true.

I Am Always With Her

And God asked the feline spirit,

Are you ready to come home?

Oh, yes, quite so, replied the precious soul, And, as a cat, you know I
am most able to decide anything for myself.

Are you coming then? asked God.

Soon, replied the whiskered angel,

But I must come slowly, for my human friend is troubled For, you see, she
needs me, quite certainly.

But doesn't she understand? asked God, That you'll never leave her?

That your souls are intertwined. For all eternity?

That nothing is created or destroyed? It just isforever and ever and
ever.

Eventually she will understand, replied the glorious cat, For I will
whisper into her heart that I am always with her, I just amforever and
ever and ever.

Subject: [Felvtalk] Time to step down from rescuing for a time being.

Hi all,I'm taking some time off from rescue due to my husband's illness. He has
liver failure and is not a candidate for a transplant. He has been
hospitalized 2 times this month and once last month he was placed into a skill
nursing facility since the 18th of February after the first trip to the
hospital.

He is in the end final stage of his disease his liver has stopped working.
Can die at any given time. He is being given all the pain meds he wants for
comfort so he will most likely fall asleep an never wake up again.

I want to make myself available at all times for him.
He is only 64 years old... I know to some of you that may sound old but it
isn't
really.
Hospice has been part of this as well to help me cope with all of this. Hospice
is available to me 24 hours a day.

Sincerely,
Terrie
