I don't remember offhand, it was over a year ago, but I think I may have gotten
the link from the files at the FCRF yahoo group they have to give fluids all
the time so some good advice and links on there. you can google it and check
prices, you may need a script for the fluids as they want to make sure you are
getting the right type of fluid. I always use lactated ringers.

Re: [Felvtalk] Mixing FeLV Positve FeLV Negative Vaccinated Cats

2012-05-22 Thread Holly Shelton
I am far from being an expert here. My cat Oliver (6) was diagnosed with the
leukemia virus back in December after my cat Daisy (4) suddenly got ill and
passed away. Turns out that she had leukemia even though she was vaccinated
against it and showed no prior signs of having it.

Oliver mixes with 4 of my other cats and nobody has tested positive.

I personally have known about a dozen people who mix their positves to
negatives - and negatives are not vaccinated either - and some of the cats have
lived together, meaning share everything - grooming..etc.. amazingly, none of
their negatives have become positives - though I have to say, all of they are
adults cats - I am sure that kittens are more susceptible - and some of them
are lving together for several years.

Well.. I don't think there is a definitive answer to your question(not just
yours most of us came accross it at some point)..basically if negative cats
don't come into contact with positives they won't get infected. Also infection
results from long time exposure, ie if a negative licks a postive dish once in
a blue moon he won't get infected, however if he does clean the + plate every
day, he could.
If a positive grooms a negative once the negative won't get it but if he does
it everyday or several times a day he could, same as for sharing beds,
litterboxes, etc.

I recently read on internet that infection thru aerosol/ airborne virus is
rare in cats but common in dogs.., I don't know abt it. While the virus
live for a few hrs out of the host if a - cat happens to absorb a + sneeze
right after the + sneezed he could be infected.
I've two FeLV+ one lives in a room by himself though during the day I put him
in a LG crate in the garage for a change, he loves it.
The other one is in a crate in another room(reason for crate is that it is the
basement and other cats are around, however he doesn't sneeze so I'm not
concerned somebody that just happens to pass by could get a droplet or two.,
The first one does have a chronic sinus infection so he sneezes quite a bit.
I keep a litter in another room, young and senior are most vulnerable to
infection.
All the cats except the new litter are vaccinated.

who have not been tested, and a 2-year old girl and 6-month old girl who

as much as possible about it. The older cats do not really interact with

does it take forever to get the fluids in because the needle is so small?

Maureen,
I never use those “ horse” needles for cats; I prefer the 20x1”, and often use
18x1” as well – it may take a little bit longer, but goes in a lot easier,
especially for kittens. Some cats have tough skin, and others have super soft
skin and the needle just glides right in. Getting the needles from the vet gets
a bit expensive and they’re not as sharp as the ones that I get here (no
prescription needed) – a box of 100 is $6.45

For you guys that give sub-q fluids -

What size needle do you use? A friend showed me how to do it yesterday but she
has these huge 18 gauge needles. I'm wondering if I can use a smaller size.
It's for my 6 month old kitten so I hate stabbing her with that huge thing.

tested positive for the virus shortly after.

When my diabetic/renal cat was inappetent, I busted out pieces of a plain
McDonald's hamburger, lunchmeat, cheese, tuna, any smelly cat food. fish
flakes, sprinkled Fortiflora on the food, plain meat baby food and also tried
boiled chicken.

I am so sorry that you are dealing with all of this.

Best of luck.

Subject: [Felvtalk] sick FLV+ kitty, worried owner

Dear all,
I've been a member of this list since 2009, when Sylvia, the older of my two
(strictly indoor-only) cats, was first diagnosed with FLV (she'd tested
negative twice as a kitten, then at just over a year old came up positive on
both the snap and IFA tests). We have a great vet, and she's been a happy,
healthy, fat, and sassy calico cat for most of her life. I haven't been very
active on this list in the last year or so because Sylvia has been so healthy,
apart from a case of gingivitis that our vet and I were monitoring carefully.
She's about four years old now, and was originally a stray kitten in an urban
area. I adopted her from an ASPCA in New Jersey. The vet thinks she got the
virus from her mama and it was dormant in her system until the stress of moving
from NJ to MA caused it to turn active.

Unfortunately, her run of good health seems to be over. Toward the end of
March, she started having diarrhea and seemed lethargic, so I took her to the
vet, who said she didn't have a fever, but gave her a shot of systemic
antibiotics and some subcutaneous fluids anyway. Her energy levels rose and the
diarrhea resolved itself. However, Sylvia's energy levels took a nosedive again
this past week, and she's been totally lethargic. She started hiding in my
roommate's closet and spent an entire night in there on Wednesday. She's been
refusing to play with my other cat, Beatrice, and hissed last time Beatrice
tried to convince her to play chase (not normal at all-- these two have always
been good buddies and playmates).

Yesterday, we went back to the vet. This time, she did have a high fever (105)
and the vet did blood work, which showed anemia and a high white blood cell
count. The vet said all signs point to infection and suggested antibiotics and
fluids, but she also wanted to do x-rays to check for tumors...then she also
said that even if a tumor showed itself, there would be no treatment options
and we'd have to discuss euthanasia. I opted against the x-rays as I'm on a
limited budget and couldn't really see the point if the tests wouldn't lead to
treatment. We decided to do another round of the injected systemic antibiotics
and sub-Q fluids, and the vet also gave me an oral antibiotic to dose Sylvia
with once a day. I'm going to purchase a thermometer so I can monitor her
temperature daily, as well. I'm under strict instructions to bring her back in
if her temp rises or stays where it is. We go back on Wednesday for another
round of blood work, to see if the anemia and white blood cell count are
improving or getting worse.

I'm a mess. I'm so worried; I broke down crying in the vet's office yesterday
before the vet even came in to see Sylvia. And poor Sylvia has been hiding
under my bed since we got home yesterday. She's not interested in cuddles or
attention (which is not even a little normal for her-- most of the time, she'd
spend her whole evening curled up on my lap if given the chance). She'll come
out to eat (she's still interested in treats) and get a drink of water, and
then she goes right back under the bed to sleep. I realize that this is
instinct...when animals are very sick they have to hide to protect themselves
from predators...but she's never been so adamant about being out of sight
before this week.

Have any of you dealt with this in a FLV+ cat before? Any advice for how to
cope? Is there some other remedy I should be giving her (Lysine, pet-tinic,
etc) in addition to the antibiotics while she's sick to bolster her immune
system? She eats high-quality food to begin with (Wellness CORE and
occasionally Wellness wet food). Also...how do I know when her quality of life
has deteriorated to the point that euthanasia is something to consider? She's
not herself now, that's for sure, but she doesn't seem to be in pain, either.
When she's been in pain in the past because of her mouth/gums, she's been quite
vocal about it. I just don't want her to suffer needlessly.

This has been breaking my heart. Sylvia is my first cat as an adult (I'm 25 and
in grad school); she's outlived two serious relationships, the whole of my
Master's degree work, and a major move. I'm more attached to her than I've ever
been to an animal.

Eye was checked, it was nothing to worry about and doesn’t at all interfere
with his vision. He will be 17 yrs old in July. Spook’s eyes are dark amber and
spots are brown. Since your cat has blue eyes, and spots are blue, it could be
the same thing. I would still have it checked, because no two things are ever

[Felvtalk] (no subject)

2012-03-22 Thread Holly Shelton
My six year old Siamese cat, Oliver tested positive for the leukemia virus back
in December. He's been doing great, other than having an eye infection a few
weeks back, which cleared up pretty well. I have noticed that there is a ring
of gray hair around the eye that had the infection. Has anyone else had that
happen after an eye infection? So weird. My vet has never seen that happen.

Oliver did have a blood panel done two weeks ago as he is due for a dental next
week. All of the values, especially the ones that related to leukemia virus
were great.

Thanks, Holly

[Felvtalk] Oliver has an eye infection

2012-02-17 Thread Holly Shelton

Hi everyone. I am an infrequent poster, except maybe for giving some CRF info,
but I read every post. My cat Oliver, a 6 year old Siamese, was diagnosed with
the leukemia virus back in December. My Siamese mix, Daisy (4), got really
sick suddenly and after two blood transfusions and a lot of meds, she was
helped ahead. What an awful experience. Cut to: all of my other cats,
including some fosters, were tested and vaccinated. Oliver was the only one
out of five cats who came back with positive results after both tests.

He has been doing great since then. He is on Pet-Tinic and Omega 3 treats. I
tried the Omega 3 oil and he didn't go for it.

Today, I noticed that he has a weepy eye and we went straight to the vet's
office, it turns out he has an eye infection and is on triple antibiotic
ointment. We go back for a check up on Saturday.

I am a bit nervous as I know that he has a compromised immune system and I want
to make sure that he stays comfortable for a long time.

And I am working some long hours so I am not around as much as I would like to
be to monitor him.

Any words of wisdom are very welcomed.

Well it was another heartbreaking day for us today at Sids...Lucky Louie was a
sweet little orange guy that had a rough start before coming to us.His story
was a hawk has dropped him in his rescuers yard. Somehow he ended up with us
and we had a short time to have had the chance to love this great little guy.
Britta today when I was having my valentine visit with the Sids kids had a
seizure right in front of me,it was the strangest thing I ever saw...but she
came out of it,crawled into my lap and proceeded to purr and kneed my
lapwas such a sweet moment for us. Well I just received an e-mail from Dr.
Jen that little Britta collapsed and could not be helped...I will cherish that
sweet moment I got to share with her today after she had scared me so.
Heart is heavy tonight,

Everyone else in the house tested negative and just had their booster shots.

Dry food isn't great for a renal cat. KD isn't the best either. I fed my

I would highly recommend adding CoQ10 to their food, keeps their gums, heart,
etc healthy. Gums and teeth are impacted greatly by immuno depressive viruses.
GNC has the vegetarian formula that is powder in capsules, open capsule and
sprinkle/mix into food (tasteless!). Use between 30-50 mg daily. I have been
using CoQ10 for years, and have dealt mostly with FIV+ cats, and only a few
FeLV+ cats…it kept them in great shape for a long time.l Natalie

So sorry about Daisy. I had a brother sister FeLV positive. I lost the sister
about a year ago to lymphoma, but the brother is doing well, so every cat is
different in how they react to this virus.

I don't do anything special except feed them well. They get Blue Buffalo dry
food. You can give interferon as a preventative.L-Lysine can be sprinkled on
their food. My feeling is if it doesn't stress them out to give them a
supplement then do it. But if you have to chase them down to give them
something, you are stressing them out doing more harm than good.

I don't go through any heroic measures. The one time I did that it broke my
heart because I put the cat through so much needless pain at the end. That
being said, some people here do, it works out. It is a personal choice.

BTW this is Feline Leukemia (FeLV) not Leukemia. They are totally different. I
had a friend with a cat who had Leukemia.

[Felvtalk] new to the group

2011-12-29 Thread Holly Shelton
Hi there. I just wanted to take a moment and introduce myself. I am a huge cat
lover. I volunteer at an animal sanctuary and take care of the cats there as
well. I have extensive knowledge of diabetes and CRF, but leukemia is new to
me.

About a month ago, I noticed that my 4 year old Siamese mix, Daisy, was feeling
a bit off so we ran some blood work and she came back severely anemic. I
rushed her into the ER, where she stayed for three days and had two blood
transfusions and put on various types of meds. Unfortunately, her body just
gave out and my cat sitter, who works with my vet, called me when I was out of
town with my dad in the hospital, and said that they thought it was Daisy's
time. We believe that she had leukemia. She was vaccinated, but perhaps it
was dormant until recently. (Dad's ok).

I have three other cats of my own and had them tested and subsequently
vaccinated. My 6 year old Siamese, Oliver, tested positive after having the
ELISA and IFA tests. I want to see what I can do to help give him a good
quality of life. I am checking out this website and look forward to gaining
the knowledge I need to. My vet and I were talking about interferon, omega
fatty 3's, pet-tinic, etc. He is used to me doing my own research as I
reversed the CRF and diabetes with an older cat who passed of liver failure,
mainly by seeing what real people did to help their cats.

I also have three foster cats, who live in their own room, and they tested
negative and were also vaccinated.

I look forward to hearing everyone's thoughts, and of course, pouring over the
website.

Thanks,

Holl

Hi. Not exactly sure with Daisy as it all happened so quickly. The vet ran what
I assume was the ELISA, as she was dying. He did not do the IFA. I am
interested in seeing how I can make Oliver's life as full of a life as it can
be. I was told that he has leukemia. I can confirm that with the vet when we
go over treatment tomorrow.

There is a difference between leukemia and Feline Leukemia Virus; which did
Daisy have? I’ve had cats with either one.

(Dad's ok).

vaccinated. My 6 year old Siamese, Oliver, tested positive after having the

Thanks,
