Re: any suggestions
Seems to me when I've had to give Drontal it was given 2 weeks apart twice after the initial dose, so first dose, 2 weeks later second dose and then 2 weeks later final dose. I think it was given for both round worm and tape worm. It's been awhile but that's what I remember. -- Belinda happiness is being owned by cats ... I agree with Nina too. You might start researching Drontal + cats on the web and see what you come up with. It might be an overdose as said. Stopping the Drontal is probably a good idea. Does anyone know if Jane can give Metamucil over the weekend to help with the dairrhea from the giardia or does MeMe's health stop this from being an option? :) Wendy --- Jane Lyons <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > It has been one week since MeMe's diagnosis and > yesterday > I thought we were making progress. It does sound like maybe you should stop the Drontal until you can consult with your vet. You have to go with your gut feelings on these I think. I'm not sure if you are outting Lysine in his food, but I know someone who gets a chicken flavor powder from their vet for feline herpes. She says the cats love it. Thank you. Yes I am giving Interferon Alpha, but haven't looked at Immuno regulin or Dexamethasone. I'm not sure if I should be giving him even more than he is already on right now. I'll have to check into those though, if the Prednisone doesn't help. Tomi has been acting a little bit odd yesterday and today. He seems a bit restless, looking around like he is searching for something. It could be he's just looking for some more dirt to eat, since I got rid of all the clay cat litter. I would probably keep him on the doxy...I don't think that would hurt. Re: Epogen (Erythropoetin)...I don't know how much you know, but I'll share my limited knowledge and experience. Epogen is the hormone the kidneys produce that stimulates the bone marrow to produce red blood cells. It's typically given for kidney failure...which makes sense since it's there to replace the hormone the kidneys aren't producing. Some people on this list said they have seen it work for cats with felv who are anemic. It didn't really help Slinky at all. The vet was willing to try it but didn't think it would do much since she said (like yours) that his kidneys were probably producing it like crazy but his bone marrow couldn't respond. You can give Epogen at home yourself if you can get a scrip for it (it's given sub-q). One thing to note, since it's a human drug, they can develop antibodies to it. The numbers I've seen are that about 30-40% of cats will develop antibodies. Most of what you'll see online will say that it's given about 3 times a week (sometimes more for severe anemia). However, my vet (who I love and trust completely) did her own research and said that most people only give it once a week for felv cats. The reasoning is that a) cats with felv tend to develop the antibodies more quickly (so if it was going to work, it won't once the antibodies are developed) and b) because the kidneys are probably producing the hormone, by giving an additional dose 3 times a week you can actually overload the bone marrow and make matters worse rather than better. Just some things to keep in mind. Have you looked into anything like Interferon (alpha is the human drug, omega is for cats but is expensive and has to be ordered from another country) or Immuno Regulin? I tried IR with Slinky, but it didn't help. But it may have been that we started it too late. I don't know. There's some good info in the archives about both IR and Interferon. Someone also mentioned Dexamethasone to me for Slinky. It's a stronger steroid that may help stop the body from destroying the RBC's...and could even help him develop more. But since it's stronger, it can also further suppress the immmune system. I dont know much about dex though, so you'd have to look into it first. That's all I know. I hope you can sort everything out and find an effective way to treat Tomi. I'll be praying for you both that he will get better!! Most positive cats may require a little more time to get over any illness that a non positive cat needs. Giving the doxy for an extra week or two is better than having to start all over not to mention that Tomi is going to feel like crap that much longer. I just went through this with Fred, he isn't FeLV+ but he is CRF and has had an infection for 6 weeks. He still isn't eating and we are really struggling getting enough food into him, he is very traumatized by syringe feeding and we can't get another feeding tube for atleast another week or two. I won't even weight him because it will only freak me out. -- Belinda happiness is being owned by cats ... Yes, RBC and PCV values are difflerent. A 2.59 PCV would not be a living cat. 15-17 PCV is severly anemic. This site explains the values a little better than I could. http://www.sniksnak.com/cathealth/labreports.html Beth C & J <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Hmm I think we must be talking about different blood values. The chart on that site says normal RBC is about 5-10, so that is maybe where Joey is measuring a 2.59. Tomi is measuring 17, where the normal range is 24-34, so that must be the PCV. I am not really sure what the difference is though, as they both measure red blood cells from what I gather. How is Joey doing, is he active at all, eating well? Tomi isn't as active as normal, but he is eating, though sometimes he needs some encouragement. Re: Tomi's red blood cell count going down, any suggestions?
Hi, Yes, I was totally confused. I have only been dealing with anemia for a little over a week and got my numbers all screwed up. 5-10 is normal. We are under the point where a transfusio usually happens, but the type of anemia Joey - Autoimmune Hemolytic - has does not do well with transfusion. He is actually eating a lot better. He lost 3 lb, but regained 3 ounces. However the vet is only cautiously optimistic...keeps telling me how well cats compensate. He doesn't do well with my hysteria when I lose a cat, although I love him dearly. I think he feels helpless around cryng women. Re: Tomi's red blood cell count going down, any suggestions?
Tomi has been on the Doxy for about 3 and a half weeks, so the vet said that is enough time and didn't give me any more Doxy pills. I hope that is enough timeI was thinking 4 weeks also, but she said it wasn't necessary. If Hemobartonella comes back, will it take awhile to return, or can it return quickly? I would at least like to get him through this present anemic crisis before I have to deal with Hemobart if it came back again. - Original Message - From: "Belinda" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Sent: Tuesday, April 03, 2007 2:00 AM Subject: Re: Tomi's red blood cell count going down, any suggestions? Two points isn't really a big deal during treatment (17 is low, but not dangerously low), especially since you stopped the pred right before that test. Most hemobart cases DO respond, sometimes it just takes a month or so to see the number go up. Have patience and faith (and it wouldn't hurt to keep your fingers crossed either). First of all I would ask if Mustache's FeLV status has been confirmed with an IFA test which would indicate whether or not he is l ikely to remain persistently viremic. Secondly, I would adavise the person who is caring for Mustache NOT to give him any vaccinations...this will only be an assault on his immune system that he may not be able to withstand. Repeated vaccination with combo vaccines is not good for healthy cats and there is no point in giving vaccines to a cat who is immunocompromised. The best thing to do for cats who have a compromised immune system it to keep them indoors and away from cats who may go outside and bring pathogens in to threaten their immune system, keep all types of stress to a minmimum and feed them a healthy diet with immune support. Unless the shelter allows the cats to run freely in groups, the other cats at the shelter are at no risk due to Mustache, while he would be at risk from exposure to them. The FeLV virus is not airborne and transmission other than from repeated, direct contact wirh a cat in stage 4-6 who is actively shedding the virus is highly unlikely as long as reasonably good hygiene (washing hands, food bowls, etc.) is practiced. It seems that whoever is caring for Mustache needs to learn more about FeLV and caring for a cat who is immunocompromised so that he/she can better advice potential adopters. Is there anyone on this list in their area who might be able to help in that regard. If people were better educated about FeLV, it might be easier to find foster homes and/or people willing to adopt them. Sally in San Jose

Mustache is a 3 year old DSH grey & white male cat with feline leukemia. He was a stray that was saved from dying in the street. He has an extremely amiable personality. He is great with other cats but due to his virus he must be with only other leukemia cats or an only cat. Given proper care Mustache could live his remaining time out peacefully. Please we really love him and need a home for him. He can not go to the shelter because his virus is contagious to other cats. Mustaches Dad will pay for his neuter surgery & he will have his current vaccines befor placement. He currently is in an isolation unit at the local vet office.
