Tiffany is an approximately 15-16 year old DUMPED cat with untreated high
blood pressure which has caused her to become blind. She will need to be on
blood pressure meds for life; they are calculating the dosage now. Please
help us if you can. We have spent $178 on her already exclusive of the meds
she will need to be on for life. We expect she was dumped because her
owners did not want to pay to fix what was wrong.

Amy, I don't know what to tell you. The only suggestion I have is to try
and increase his daily caloric intake to see if that helps him gain wt. So
may things can affect wt. including thyroid issues. I know you said blood
work looked fine but has he has a T4 and free T4 test recently?

If he would tolerate it you could try adding some kitten food to his regular
food for a calorie boost. Another thought is adding in come Clinicare. It
is a liquid recovery food and may provide a calorie boost. I offer mine
some Gerber Chicken and Gravy meat baby food as a treat. Each jar has 100
calories. Generally several small meal per day are best but you are already
doing that.
Hugs to him

So after losing Maverick today, I'm even more worried about
my boy who's been steadily losing weight for the past 4
years.  He has no other apparent symptoms but does have
leukemia.  He's down to 11 pounds, from 15 lbs.
He eats numerous times a day (no loss of appetite) and we
have him on a high protein, high fat diet to try to get him
to gain.  He seems to have stopped losing for now but
is not gaining it back.  Bloodwork looks fine.
Any suggestions?  I think I posted about this a while
ago but didn't get much response.

 Thanks

Yeah, the vet does know about it.  He threw it up and
 she said that means it
was recently ingested.  She said we can look at his
 belly today if we want
but she said she felt while we were there and his belly
 felt fine.  I read,
and so did she, that one of the main reasons cats eat
 litter is because of
anemia and we already know that's going on.  I've lost
 the majority of my
leuk positives over the years the same way.  Either
 anemisa or tumors.  We
do full blood workups every 6 months to try to keep an eye
 on anemia but
I've never been able to bring one back yet once the
 hematocrit starts
dropping quickly.  I expected him to live longer
 because I've lost most of
my guys with hematocrits between 7-13 and his is 23.
 This guy is fading,
though, and I think he's probably had enough.  I'm
 just trying to decide if
I want to do bloodwork and radiographs or if I want to just
 let him go
peacefully without disturbing him any further.  I have
 no doubt that the
leukemia has just taken it's toll on him :(

He also has Bartonella and despite numerous treatments, has
 not been able to
shake it.  We couldn't figure it out because any other
 cats I've treated
have responded quite well.  This guy's numbers
 actually got worse after
treatment so I'm thinking his body just doesn't have the
 means to cope with
 fighting it off.

 Amy

I would be real concerned with
clumping litter if he ate any, you know what it does
 when it
gets wet.  Does the vet know about that?  I have
heard that cats shouldn't get tums, will see if I can
 find
  the palce I read it.

Re: [Felvtalk] NEW and PROMISING Drug for FeLv+ and FIV+ Cats

2009-06-18 Thread MaryChristine
folks, once again, go to the website and actually READ what it says, and be
intelligent consumers.

this is NOT a drug, it is a treatment aid. it has CONDITIONAL approval
(which means that it shows promise of maybe doing something)--NOT from the
FDA but from the Department of Agriculture.

i'm getting really frustrated by folks who don't ask around and talk with
people who have done some investigating of these new, improved, emperor's
new supplement claims--scientists (and undergrad stat students) who look at
the research done on this product laughs--the original study, upon which
everything is based, was done on a sample size that isn't even statistically
significant.

and what they are calling, trials have been laughable, as well--perhaps
they've cleaned up that part of their act, but til now no sanctuary or vet
experienced with research would take part in them, as they were no more
rigorous nor statistically valid than the original ones.

whoever heard of a drug company CHARGING people to take part in clinical
trials?

yes, perhaps this product has some use, but the sleazy marketing techniques
that have characterized the company since they bought out the people who
actually DID the work, makes many of us question ANYTHING they say.

and what's worse is that it's all there, on their website.

i can't even comment upon the unlikelihood that a kitten who truly has FIP
would live long enough to participate in trials of any sort.

banfield is a veterinary-clinic chain that has clinics inside of many
petsmart locations.

hill's a/d is the name -- any vet will know exactly what you mean! it is a
prescription food, tho, so while you can buy it there, you'll need a scrip.

Re: [Felvtalk] NEW and PROMISING Drug for FeLv+ and FIV+ Cats

2009-06-18 Thread Michelle Brockman

I understand where you're coming from but t

he negativity is really not necessary. I mentioned this in hopes it would help
you and your cats. My family used to rescue ONLY feLv + cats for many many
years and I know that we were desperate for any hope. This is a very new
'drug', no one is contesting that but my vet had knowledge of this and is
actually the one that brought it up as an option and said that it seems to be
showing real promise and improvement in cats with feLv and FIV and that it
wouldn't hurt to try it on my cat that has FIP.

You were right to not comment on my cat with FIP because there is no textbook
answer on lifespan or symptoms of cats/kittens with FIP, each cat is different.
My cat has been diagnosed for 3 weeks now (a PCR test was done using fluid he
had in his abodmen) and he is still faring pretty well so I am hopeful even
though I know what the statistics are. I am also on a yahoo group for people
with FIP+ cats and they have had cats that have lived up to a year or so which
is certainly plenty of time to see if a 'treatment' drug willl help. Gus got
the initial treatment on Monday and I am hopeful that by week 3 he will be
improving symptomatically. Plus, if you read the website it said some cats show
improvement within the initial 3 weeks loading dose and the intial study is for
6 weeks. My vet did a CBC at dose 1 and will do one at dose 4 to see how the
cells and particularly the lymphocytes are responding.

Also, I did not pay one dime for this 'drug' for the FIP trial. The trial for
felv and fiv is over since they have proven it (to whatever degree) to help
increase white and red blood cells to the point where it helps combat the
symptoms of the virus, which is why you have to pay for it now. No one is
soliciting this as a miracle cure but it is a real option for increasing
quality of life and potentially life span when there aren't any other right
now. From what I read it seems like it's a version of stem cell repair which is
what they're trying to do in humans. I personally feel that if the risks are
very low and the benefits are potentially signifigant I want to do whatever I
can to help my cat. I did say that everyone needs to do their own research on
this but I really think you shouldn't bash it so much. I mean what do you
really have to lose? Chances are your cats with felv will die...they usually
always do and within a matter of years. I guess I'm just more proactive and
hopeful and there are a lot of cynical people on this planet. I just want my
cat to live.

I did get FDA mixed up with USDA, I apologize for that. Just so you know,
Prolabs is in the process if getting the permanant license for this 'drug'.
There apparently is a lot of red tape when it comes to new product licensing
which is why they got the conditional license. I also don't care about what
happened with a buyout or politics behind the scenes. I just care about what
they are providing and if it will help my cat.

And in all my research for FIP I found this vet that you all should check out
too. He has manufactured a vitamin complex which is basically a mega dose of
vitamin c and other vitamins and minerals. He has been able to get (over a time
span of 10 months to 3 years) positive NON-SYMPTOMATIC cats with FeLv, FIV and
FIP to test negative. It does take time for it to help the immune system so it
is not a quick fix but it will help. This Dr. is very respected in the
veterinary community and helped develop the California Naturals brand pet
foods. His website is below. Again, do your own research.

Kelly,

Due to the current economic status I no longer use credit cards (closed them
all out) and I do not give our my debit card number.

Therefore, I neither shop on-line nor pay bills on-line (use PayPal).

Do you have a residential address (or a P.O. Box) in which money order and/or
cash donations can be physically USPS mailed to?

Will you even accept money order/cash payments?

Re: [Felvtalk] Question about a new kitty

2009-06-18 Thread Chris
I'm certainly no expert in socializing ferals but sometimes that term is
used too freely--not all strays are totally feral. If he's letting you see
him and at least coming close, he is not completely feral but probably not
too socialized.

One idea I sort of stumbled onto out of necessity for my Romeo (who was much
older) was to put him in a big wire crate on top of some boxes in my
bedroom. I covered over two sides so he could see out the front and out of
one side. The crate was big enough to put a small litter box and his food
dishes and still have room for him to lie down on a towel I put in. I
worked at home and my computer was in my bedroom so he spent the first few
days lying in the litter box following me with his eyes as I walked around.
Then after a few days, I left the crate door open and realized that when I
wasn't around, he had started exploring but always jumped back to his safe
place when he heard anyone coming. Then I started putting his food dish on
the floor right next to the crate and he would jump down to eat and then
jump back up. About a week later, I moved his litter box to the bathroom
about 10' from the crate and he started going there, again very carefully.
We went like that for a couple of weeks and he'd jump back in when I ran the
vacumn cleaner, when the TV or radio was too loud, etc--but during all that
time, he kept watching everything and figured out what was safe.

About 3 weeks after I got him, I happened to look over the top of my monitor
one day and noticed he had jumped on my bed! He was real scared and kept
walking carefully trying to figure out what the heck this was. He jumped
off when he saw me looking but jumped back up 10 minutes later. This time,
he figured out this wasn't a bad place to sleep and I knew we were going to
be fine when he curled up and went to sleep in the middle of the bed.

I kept the crate up for another month or so just to give him his safe place
but he jumped in less and less and when I finally moved it out, he never
looked back!

Re: [Felvtalk] Question about a new kitty

2009-06-18 Thread Diane Rosenfeldt
Debbie is right, taming down a cat is work, but it's so very rewarding!
The feral_cats yahoogroup is a fount of information, be sure to study the
Files on trapping and taming. Things you'll learn there that you might not
know include that cats actually like small spaces so a cage is best for
taming; that there is a specific etiquette for approaching and making eye
contact with a feral cat; and that warm Kentucky Fried Chicken (bones
removed) is like kitty heroin -- it's the aroma of those secret herbs and
spices.

Our feral, (Wini)Fred, came to us from a trailer park where she had been
born in the spring, then dumped, then spent the summer foraging. We kept
her in a room, which in retrospect was probably too much space for her. We
had to keep prying her out of the innards of a big 50s wood-framed
upholstered chair we had in that room. We'd go in for an hour or two every
night and read the 100 Best Science Fiction Short Stories to her, and later
we just went in and watched DVDs with her. It was so much fun when she
decided we were okay to walk over and on, and after months of shying away,
the day when she realized she REALLY REALLY liked to be petted was a high
point of our lives. Now every night as we sit on our couches she flops
against our necks demanding skritches. It's been 4 years and she still
doesn't like getting picked up and she hides when strangers come, but she's
a perfect love bug with us. She's a quirky little thing -- there's a thing
she does with her tail that we swear she learned from the birds and
squirrels!

Re: [Felvtalk] Question about a new kitty

2009-06-18 Thread Cougar Clan
Some random ideas that have worked for me. Keep trying with the food,
especially fried chicken. Spray Feliway on yourself especially the
legs of your pants and hands (where the kitten will smell). Depending
on age try to grab him by the scruff of his neck (like a mother cat).
This worked with Copper. He stayed perfectly still until I deposited
him in a carrier. However, yu need to be careful not to release the
kitten if it struggles because catching it a second time will be
difficult. Put a carrier near the food or with the food in it.
This, coupled with Copper in a carrier beside the empty carrier worked
with Thomas two weeks later. Beg or borrow a live trap but don't
leave it unwatched. Cover it lightly with fabric to make it cave-like
and spray it with Feliway. This has worked with numerous kittens/cats
who were transported as soon as possible to a vet for attention and
neutering.

Go to the Alley Cat Advocates site and to feral cat rescue sites for
other ideas.

Yes, the little dude may be positive which makes him even more in need
of your love. However, he may well not be. Neither Copper or Thomas
is FeLV+ and they have grown to be very big, healthy cats thanks to
their regular vets and their holistic vet.

In any case, one of your first stops should be the vets' office.
Forget about vacinations until the kitten is settled. He will be
under enough stress. My guys didn't start theirs until I was very
sure they were healthy and accostomed to peoplebetween 4 and 5
months old. I have vets who are very understanding and are respectful
of my wishes even if they may not agree. We disguss issues and arrive
at decissions that (we all hope) are in the best interest of my four-
legged friends.

Good luck. You are about to go on one of the most interesting and
rewarding journeys of your life.

He has been tested for hyperthyroid but not pancreatitis.

Has he been tested for pancreatitis?
 Hyperthyroid?
Those are two conditions that result in weight loss. That
 is what we tested
 for.

Re: [Felvtalk] Losing weight

2009-06-18 Thread Amy

Thanks for the ideas. Since I just bought some baby food for my other cat, I
will definitely try adding stuff like that for calories. He really seems to
eat fine so I'm stumped why he keeps losing weight :(

Amy

Amy, I don't know what to tell you.  The only
suggestion I have is to try and increase his daily caloric
intake to see if that helps him gain wt.  So may things
can affect wt. including thyroid issues.  I know you
said blood work looked fine but has he has a T4 and free T4
 test recently?

If he would tolerate it you could try adding some kitten
food to his regular food for a calorie
boost.   Another thought is adding in come
Clinicare.  It is a liquid recovery food and may
provide a calorie boost.  I offer mine some Gerber
Chicken and Gravy meat baby food as a treat.  Each jar
has 100 calories.  Generally several small meal per day
are best but you are already doing that.
 Hugs to him

So after losing Maverick today, I'm even more worried
 about
my boy who's been steadily losing weight for the past
 4
years.  He has no other apparent symptoms but does
 have
leukemia.  He's down to 11 pounds, from 15 lbs.
He eats numerous times a day (no loss of appetite) and
 we
have him on a high protein, high fat diet to try to
 get him
to gain.  He seems to have stopped losing for now
 but
is not gaining it back.  Bloodwork looks fine.
Any suggestions?  I think I posted about this a
 while

Re: [Felvtalk] Losing weight

2009-06-18 Thread Belinda Sauro

Hi Amy,
A regular T4 thyroid test sometimes won't give a high reading until it
gets fairly high. Fred always tested normal but my vet could feel a
small nodule on his thyroid and we kept an eye on it. When he went in
for his physical a year later she felt it had gotten slightly bigger so
we did another thyroid test but we did the T4 and the T FREE 4 also.
The T4 was within normal range and the T FREE 4 was very slightly high.
We caught it very early and he had the radio iodine treatment.

Some of Fred's symptoms were, he was always hungry, every time I got up
to do anything he would get up and follow me, just in case I was going
in the kitchen. He ate a lot of food but never gained any weight. He
also would howl sometimes. He drank a lot and peed a lot but the was
because he also had kidney issues which we diagnosed at the same time as
when we found out about the hyper-t.

Re: [Felvtalk] Losing weight

2009-06-18 Thread Laurieskatz
Pancreatitis is a blood test (and/or ultrasound). They send the blood to
Texas now. There is a yahoo group for feline pancreatitis. It is important
to do the right test. There is an outdated one that some vets still use.
It isn't really something they treat. My vet had me put Frankie on a low fat
diet (that is what they do for dogs and it hasn't been proven to work for
cats but did work for Frankie).

Thanks, I'll ask about this. We have tested him a couple times because she
thought she felt something a bit odd last time. We had just tested him a few
months before but tested again. I'll confirm which tests she has done.
