Simon Troup b. 4th Aug 1967, Wirral, UK. BA (hons) Mus from Dartington College of Arts, Devon, UK. Guitar (Elec. Acous.) in contemporary styles and classical Piano. Finale user since version 3.0, you can see my portfolio PDF at http://www.digitalmusicart.com/dropbox - no my sites not up to date, does anyone get work via the web?! Professional guitarist for 6 years following graduation, turning to teaching following the onset of tendonitis. Wanted to work as a transcriber for Total Guitar magazine (the largest in Europe) and so sent off a transcription which was engraved using Finale. Ended up with the engraving gig instead - started on issue 13, we've just completed issue 135, and there are numerous 'special' issues to add to the total. Have also worked for other UK publishers such as Music Sales and IMP, and have produced over 200 other books, mainly guitar, but also weird stuff like technical and analysis diagrams which are great fun. I recently bought logic audio to try to get seriously back into playing rock and jazz again, but also compose in styles of music unheard of in the 19th century and considered old fashioned by 1940. Now living near Bristol, UK, I'm married with two children, a baby and a toddler ... it's a noisy house. Aside from music I'm into chess, programming, games and movies. Dennis Manasco, b. 9/26/57. I'm a long-time guitarist, mostly jazz, blues and folk. I also play a number of other stringed and plucked instruments. I play piano, organ, synth, clarinet and saxophone with enthusiasm, and varied results. I've used Finale on the Macintosh since version 3.2.1. I primarily use Finale for personal arrangements and teaching arrangements for others. I'm a graduate of the Photographic Science and Instrumentation department of R.I.T. Besides music I fill my free time with photography, personal and in-house software development and hardware implementation, and a voracious reading habit. For my day job I own and manage a medium-sized rental property in my hometown of Tulsa Oklahoma and pursue other business interests. I've been married for almost ten years to a wonderful nurse named Cheryl and have a 20-year-old step-daughter. There are so many slick, polished sites out there reeking of spin and salesmanship from which one can come away knowing nothing at all about the person or the subject, whereas yours are full of personality, not to mention great content in a whole slew of areas (that's CONtent, rather than conTENT.) Re: [Finale] OT: Who are you?
OK, so many interesting stories so far, I have to add mine in. Plus I have some free time... Born in Toronto 1960, moved all over ending up in Montreal. Went to McGill University in classical bass trombone performance, but never intended to play full time in an orchestra. My plan from the beginning was play, write, teach; any style, basically try to be as polyvalent as possible. My first gigs were on bass (electric, then upright, learned from my brother, who is a bassist, and my sister, who plays bass now for Prince) but I gave that up once I was out of school. I wrote, played and conducted for shows, choirs, and casuals in Montreal, gaining valuable chops and experience. I finished my Master's degree in Jazz Studies and Contemporary Media (writing major) at Eastman School of Music in 1988 and won a few awards for writing music. I came back to Montreal to be with my sweetie, eschewing the big centres like New York and Los Angeles, preferring to be a relatively big fish in a small pond, and taught jazz arranging for the next 17 years at McGill, and trombone and theory privately. I kept gigging at anything that came my way, more or less keeping up the play, write, teach philosophy, but my first love was jazz. I left McGill last year, and now teach jazz composition and arranging at Vanier College and Université de Montréal. I still gig quite a bit on tenor trombone, bass trombone and tuba, playing regularly with the Altsys Jazz Orchestra, Streetnix, Montreal Jazz Big Band, the Opus Lib brass quintet, and l'Orchestre Symphonique de Sherbrooke. I write a lot too, for jingles, films, shows, and whatever jazz I can manage to fit into all that, though the teaching side seems to be on a relative upswing. I married my sweetie, who teaches college, and we have two children, 11 and 9. I'm pretty sure that if I had tried this in a bigger city I would have failed miserably, or else found myself pigeonholed into a specialty, which did not follow my original plan. I have used Finale since 3.2 to create pretty parts for the musicians, but I never managed to get my head around working directly to the computer. I still use cheap staff paper and a 2B pencil to sketch, working everything out before I ever get to the computer. For my commercial work, I can often do it without referring to a piano, but I noodle endlessly on the piano whenever I am creating something that is new to me. I have been writing and arranging music for most of my life -- currently writing mostly for the educational market. I self publish my music and do all my engraving with Finale - I am quite grateful to the members of this list for all the help in working toward getting the printed music to look as professional as possible. I moved to the twin cities about four years ago and currently teach music privately in addition to writing and arranging. [Finale] Re: Who are you?
My start in music began at age four with violin lessons from my father. Piano lessons followed at the age of seven. My major interest in music, though, was sparked at Stuyvesant High School where I was convinced to play the bassoon. (Bassoon?, I asked. What's a bassoon?) I majored in bassoon at the Juilliard School under Simon Kovar, and performed in the New York area with a variety of ensembles, including the orchestra of Leonard Bernsteins Omnibus series on ABC-TV, and created the Contemporary Woodwind Quintet with Phil Dunnigan, Ronnie Roseman, Bob Listokin, and Clare Van Norman. After receiving my M.A. from N. Y. U., I served as a teacher on every level for 9 years, chairman of music at the then experimental John Dewey H. S. for 23 years, and conductor of the New York All-City High School Band, performing at Alice Tully Hall, Avery Fisher Hall, and Carnegie Hall. Retiring in 1990, I became Director of Educational Programs for the S.E.M. Ensemble, a group specializing in post-Cagean music. In this unique position, I recorded CDs of the music of John Cage and Morton Feldman with the S.E.M. Orchestra, and with Dierctor Petr Kotik, taught students on all grade levels to appreciate and perform complex avant-garde music. Now I am a stage daddy for my violinist daughter, dabble in digital video and still photography, and am a part-time computer music engraver, who regards my transcription for piano and concert band of Gershwins Concerto in F as my magnum opus in computer notation. I also avidly read all the expert Finale advice on this terrific list. Happy New Year!___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale

However, I would love to know a little background of each and all of you. Are you a musician? Yes. I played clarinet all through school 6th-12th grade in Starkville, Mississppi and undergraduate college for four years at Mississippi State University. I continued to play clarinet in graduate school (on the side) at Univ. of Tennessee Memphis where several professors played as well. At various times while I was there including Christmastime, we would work up several selections for a wind ensembale. I officially took 2 1/2 years of piano lessons during my undergraduate years but have been fooling around with the piano/synth since 5th/6th grade. I continue to play piano (teaching myself, playing along with other music) especially at church where I play piano and my synthesizer--at times primarily, and others secondarily. I started messing around with the acoustic guitar in my undergraduate years and later, but after the mid-90s, everyone got tired of me borrowing their guitar and told me to get my own.. And so I did in '97 and have taught myself everything (what little that is *grin*) on my own. And it looks like I will be delving into the electric guitar realm here very shortly.. maybe even this week. I play the guitar mainly at church and with friends and along with CDs. I would really like to make time to take some lessons. But life gets in the way. I have been playing the penny whistle for the last 2-3 years as well at church and other places (such a selection of instruments for a Baptist church). Are you active? Yes. Are you retired? No. My work is non-music related (I am an engineer), other than having a music CD playing nearly all the time at my desk. Where are you from and where are you residing now? I am from Starkville, Mississippi although I was born in Alabama, but now reside in Memphis, Tennessee. What kind of music do you specialize in? Gospel/hymns/contemporary Christian. Clarinet-wise...whatever was or is thrown to me--I especially like Mozart, Beethoven, and Crussell. Are you an instrumentalist, See above. composer/arranger/copiest, teacher, etc.? I have been composing music since the 8th grade (started with writing clarinet ensembles). In high school (before the days of Finale or anything computerized ('86-'89) I helped arrange and copy music for concert band. One big project I undertook is that I copied/created full concert band orchestration from copies of copies of copies of individual parts and 2 differing (neither complete) scores... of 'Jesus Christ Superstar'.. by pencil, then by pen and ink and ruler. That was fun :) It paid my way for our senior year concert trip that year. Boy, Finale woulda been nice back then. If not a musician, what is your occupation? Engineer. Great thread! Ralph W. Whitfield, Jr. DOB 1/15/58. I live in Rainbow City, AL. Started out with piano at 6. Started trombone at 13 in Jr. High (remember those?). I started on trombone because, at the time, it was the cheapest horn that my parents could rent. Boy, did I make them pay later when it came time for the 3 other horns that they bought. Anyway...wrote my first arrangement at 16 and have been arranging every since. Graduated from Jacksonville State University (AL) with BS in Ed and a BA in Liberal Arts (performance). I studied trombone with Jim Roberts and composition with David Walters. Received my Masters in Music from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where I studied trombone with Vernon Forbes and composition with Bob Beadell and Dennis Lovenfloss. Taught public school for 3 years and then went back to school to get a degree in engineering. I compose music for voices, orchestra and band. I have a publishing company that specializes in trombones and trombone ensembles. (www.rainbowbrassmusic.com...but it's down right now...I'm looking for a good inexpensive shopping cart for a re-vamp...anyone know of one?) I had a work premiered at Carnegie Hall in 2002 and I recently received an interesting commision...the director of the local youth orchestra (who did the Carnegie Hall premier) wrote a theme and asked 4 of the living composers that he uses a lot to write variations on the theme and he would perform them all as a single unit. Neat, huh? BTW...check out the link below for an MP3 of the premeried piece. I've been using Finale since version 3.2 for Windows (I think). I started out with LMP (Laser Music Processor) and work with Cakewalk and sometimes PowerTracks Pro. I'm a fouding member of the Gadsden Symphony Orchestra and play fairly regularly with the Rome (Ga.) Symphony Orchestra. I recently retired from being a church choir director for over 21 years.I play jazz piano with several jazz quartets in the area and I've played lead trombone with the Kings of Swing jazz band since it's inception over 12 years ago.
