Yes, I can confirm that with Palatino and Times with the l and the o,
(after the ' seems to be fine in all cases), but not Garamond nor Times

I get a slashed l and a slashed o, which I assume you get, too? I am

Yes, I believe it was introduced in Fin2004. It really makes it much

That shows the difference in the expression list. The other useful

Any tips/pitfalls to avoid from you experienced professionals would

The problem with this method is positioning. If you've set the
expression to center on the notehead (as is often the case with
dynamics), the entire length of the expression is taken into
account... including hidden characters.

It doesn't even help to include the hidden characters on a separate
line (since multi-line expressions are allowed as of Fin2k4), unless
the length of the hidden section is the same length or shorter than
the printing section. As has previously been discussed here,
multi-line expressions cannot be aligned with any method other than
left-alignment.

I searched for a FAQ but didn't find this, forgive me if it has been

I don't think pdf's know anything about double sided printing. However, it
is much more common for the music to begin on page 3 than page 2. You might
consider putting the instrumentation on page 2.

 2) Comb binding for conductor's scores?

I strongly suggest going with wire coil binding instead. Combs are more
likely to bind, tear the paper, get crushed, and make noise while turning
pages. Also, wire coils allow the score to be opened a full 360 degrees,
which can be handy. No contest in my opinion.

 3) For printing parts, will your average print shop be able to
handle printing onto a single sheet, which when folded and opened,
will yield two pages? At the same 10 x 13 format?

Not sure because I wouldn't trust the job to them. I have found it's enough
of a challenge just to get a print shop to trim and bind scores properly.
Obviously, YMMV.

this typology, but there still would have been a distinction drawn
between clarino and principale trumpet playing. The latter extended

To the best of my recollection, the five original types of trumpet

notated at all. The basso in 16th-17th c. trumpet bands played
nothing but low c (or the equivalent note for trumpets in other keys),
the vulgano above that played just two notes, and the alto e basso
just 3.

[Finale] Preparing Orchestral Score and Parts

2005-03-26 Thread Ryan Beard
Personally, I don't like wire coil binding. The main
reason is that due to the angle of the coil (can't
think of a better word at the moment) the page you're
turning ends up being lower than the remaining pages.
In other words, the left half is slightly lower than
the right half. When used on a tilted music stand, it
creates just as much noise as the comb binding and it
bends the paper on the corners close to the bind. Go
with the comb, it's slightly cheaper, and easier to
replace pages if you need to correct mistakes.

Also, I would go for 11x14 score size unless you have
specific orders from the librarian you're dealing
with. I like this size for two reasons: 1) It's a lot
easier to take an 11x17 sheet and make one cut of 3
inches off the bottom; and 2) if you should ever
decide to print a study size score, Finale's 2up
print option nicely shrinks this size to fit on one
half of 11x17 page with no extra tweaking.

As for the parts, unless you're given specific
instructions from the orchestra librarian, I think
it's perfectly fine to print on 11x17 booklets. Even
better would be 12x18 (standard in the publishing
world) if your printer can handle it. As long as the
music is extremely legible and free from mistakes, the
musicians won't complain about the size of paper
(well, they shouldn't).

I've purchased the equipment necessary to create the
materials in the style that I like. Obviously, this is
personal preference, and I would make adjustments if
required to do so. The best part is that I don't have
to rely on the ...ahem... geniuses at the local
national chain of print shops to finish my projects.

This (along with the lack of justification) shows that they've

Perhaps it was easy for them to implement it this way, but it sounds

Make sure that all the places where paper sizes are set agree on the
size -- I think with PDF files that shouldn't be a problem. When
printing to physical paper people sometimes run into problems with the
printer driver needing to be set along with the several places in Finale
where the page sizes are set.

2) Comb binding for conductor's scores?
There's a great division on this point, with many favoring a
plastic-coil binding rather than comb-binding.

3) For printing parts, will your average print shop be able to handle

You'll need to contact your local average print shop to find that out.
Just because mine can doesn't mean yours will be able to, and even if

In my opinion, the first step in preparing to have a 10 x 13 format
score printed is to select the right vendor. You're going to want to
find an output shop who has the equipment, skill, and experience to
print exactly what you're seeking.

I need the title page with instrumentation on the first actual page,
then to have the actual score begin on page 2, which would be the
first left handed page- correct?
Depends. Sometimes I have seen the cover is included in the page count,
sometimes not. If it is included, I am more familiar with seeing the
title and instrumentation on the title page, which is customarily on a
right-hand page, and in most printed and bound scores, the music also
usually begins on a right-hand page.

2) Comb binding for conductor's scores?
I am not a conductor, but I am disenchanted generally with comb binding,
because in my experience the comb has about a 20 year life span. My own
opinion is that a conductor's score should be bound more durably, and
I'd be inclined to go with some type of wire binding. I'd also make
certain that the score and parts are printed on archival quality stock.

3) For printing parts, will your average print shop be able to

Don't know about your average shop, but there are shops out there that
can handle this. If it were me, I'd start with the phone book, and call
a number of shops, looking for a house where someone was a musician, and
start there. A bit of time in selecting the printer at the start will
save time and headaches later, IMO.

2005-03-26 Thread Chuck Israels
Just got a new monitor arm for my 24 Samsung Syncmaster monitor which allows 90 degree rotation. Which ATI graphics card do I need in order to have the Versavision option (Mac OS X)? I see two different version of the ATI 9800 pro; one with 128 MB of RAM, and one with 256. Does it make a difference? (Games and other graphic intensive uses are not a big priority for me.)

TIA,

Chuck

[Finale] Mastering Page Layout

2005-03-26 Thread Paul Besco
I'm delving into FInale from the desk top publishing side with much experience with text and image manipulation for press. My portal for music publishing was Smartmusic and Printmusic, both handled page layout in their own way. Printmusic work did not prepare me for Finale, which seems to be somewhere between Smartmusic and Printmusic in the sense, that it doesn't quite seem to do what previous dtp experience would lead one to expect. I'm having trouble grasping the relationship between the huge Page Layout Options for Score dialog and the System and Page Margin dialogs. The manual is very thorough, but attempting to get a copy of a piano piece to lay on the page like I want is a push-me-pull-you affair between the various dialogs. Does anyone have a link to a discussion about these dialog relationships or can recommend a text book?

There's certainly a lot of options to meddle with, partly a result of
Finale being developed in many small stages. What I would say, without
being able to give any direct advice, is that most people find that the
best way to tackle music in Finale is to input 'everything', ie all
notes, and everything attached to individual notes, and once that is
done to worry about the layout on the page.

There's moments when I find I simply need to sit back and decide how
many staves-per-page look correct. Or that I'll experiment with various
sizes of stave, printing them all out and comparing them.

(Also, just to check: you're not missing the MassMover 'Fit Music'
command, are you? This can lock-down individual systems, so you can
then tweak within a fixed selection)

Not everyone needs to insert graphics in their scores, so many
professional engravers don't have to import EPS.

But if you're doing, say, textbooks, you need EPS export to insert
into PageMaker or Quark (or whatever the DTP programs are), or into
professional-grade publishing programs.

As for exporting EPS, there are ways around the broken feature (via
 PDF, for instance).

Would that work for the circumstances above?

2005-03-26 Thread Robert Patterson
Save some money and get a less expensive card that supports Vv. I picked
up a 8500 Pro Mac Edition new for about $120. That is AGP 4x. If you
have a G5 Powermac, I think your only option is the 9800 Pro Mac Special
Edition. See my tech tips faq (linked from website below) for more info.

The only downside of the 8500 is that currently it only works with the
DVI port. The ADC port does not work with any of my monitors. I have
tried two different cards and suspect a firmware problem that I hope
will be fixed with the next firmware update. Meanwhile, even with only
one 8500 port I am no worse off than I was in OS9. In fact, I'm much
better off because it isn't so flakey.

Chuck,
All you need is the ATI Radeon 9200 Mac Edition, which is much cheaper
than the Radeon 9800 (a heavy-duty gaming card loaded with 3D
horsepower you don't need.) The Radeon 9200 is the card Robert
Patterson got.

Here are some vendors that have it:

Hi Chuck,
Well, I see I was mistaken -- Robert got the Radeon 8500, not the
Radeon 9800.

I would still suggest the Radeon 9200 because it's a PCI card, so you
can install it *in addition* to your the (very good) video card that
came with your G5. If you get an AGP card like the Radeon 8500, you
will have to remove your existing video card. I'm also not 100% sure
the 8500 works with the G5's.

Actually, now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure the 8500 won't
work with your G5.

ATI makes two version of the Radeon 9800, one for G4s, and one for G5s.
This leads me to suspect that the 8x AGP bus in the G5 is not
compatible with older 2x and 4x AGP video cards like the Radeon 8500.

Get the Radeon 9200. It's about the same price as the Radeon 8500, you
won't have to remove any hardware, and it's guaranteed to work with
your G5.

Hey Chuck,
One last thing occurs to me -- what is the native resolution of your
Samsung display? You want to make sure it's supported by the ATI 9200,
which supports digital flat panel displays (via DVI) up to 1920x1200.

Some extremely large monitors (like Apple's 30 Cinema Display) have a
native resolution above 1920x1200 and require a heavy-duty video card
to fire them.

Re: [Finale] Versavison ATI Graphics card

2005-03-26 Thread Chuck Israels
Hi Darcy,

1920X1200 is the native resolution, so I think I'll be OK with the 9200 card. It seems to be listed at just under $100 - a fair enough price to be able to rotate the monitor (seems to me). I think the local Mac dealer will know, in any case, and if I buy it from those guys, they'll take it back if it doesn't do the job.

Thanks again.

Re: [Finale] Mastering Page Layout

2005-03-26 Thread Noel Stoutenburg
Paul Besco wrote:
I'm having trouble grasping the relationship between the huge Page
Layout Options for Score dialog and the System and Page Margin dialogs.
One fact that helps here is to recognize that one mistake made early on
by those creating Finale, was that they assumed that most people using
the software would use templates as a starting point for new editions.
Page Layout for Score (PLO /S) is most useful in this regard; in the
process of preparing a template, you place in the PLO / S dialog box the
values you want to be reflected when you use that template to create a
new document, and if memory serves me correctly, the options used become
effective after the document has been saved, and re-opened. OTH, the
System and Page margin dialogs work on the active score, in real time,
but only on such bits of the score as currently exist.

The manual is very thorough, but attempting to get a copy of a piano
piece to lay on the page like I want is a push-me-pull-you affair
between the various dialogs. Does anyone have a link to a discussion
about these dialog relationships or can recommend a text book?
Here's the way I would do this:

1) enter all of the music in your piano work, and save the file;
2) re-open the file containing your piano music;
3) at the same time as the file opened in 2, create a new file,
(starting with a new empty document / document without libraries
[different names for the same thing; before 2k1 or 2k2, it is an empty
document; starting in 2k1 or 2k2, it was renamed) containing the same
number of staves with the same clefs as the file you opened in 2.

4) decide what size you want the general page layout, that is, page size
reduction, margins, first page drop, title size, c., and set the page
margins using the Page margin dialog box;

5) Set the same margins, page drop, and page reduction percentage in
the Page Layout For Score dialog in the file created in number 3;

6) in the file re-opened in number 2, adjust the system, and if
necessary, staff reductions, and appropriate system margins;

7) place the same values for system margins, and system reduction in the
PLO box;

8} save the libraries from the document re-opened in number 2;
9)  load the libraries saved in 8 into the new document created in number 3;
10) save you working document (the one opened in number 2); and finally,
11) save the document created in number 3 as a template.

As things have actually developeed, the new document wizard is good
enough that a much higher percentage of people use that, than the
creators of Finale expected would, at the expense of the number of
people who use pre-defined templates. If you want to use the Page
layout you selected above, with the setup wizard, load the default
template, make the adjustments in PLO / S, and resave the default
template as default.tmp.
