Re: [Finale] EPS in FinMac 2008 broken? Can anyone check for me?
Can't you crop the PS in Preview, using the Marquee tool and then the Crop button? And I'm probably missing something crucial here, but why are you bothering with EPS at all? If you're trying to place Finale examples in a Word file, can't you just print to PDF crop what you need, then place the cropped PDF? This works for me -- I haven't needed or wanted EPS in years. Perhaps there's some reason why this won't work for you, though. Well, we have a long experience with EPS on Windows, since it was broken for years and years (at least since 2000), and was never fixed for Win2000. So when I needed EPS files I printed to PDF and extracted the EPS from the PDF files. Couldn't you do the same? Hmm, this seems interesting, and it's only an extra couple of steps. But how do I get a PS file that is only the size of one staff? I can get full-page PS files no problem. In other words, how do I crop a PS? In Word for Mac 2004 (the version I have) an imported PDF prints with the screen resolution, antialiasing and all, slightly fuzzy outlines, etc. I was hoping for the razor-sharp music examples I get with EPS in AppleWorks or Word. Actually, in Pages (the new program that more or less replaced AppleWorks) PDFs import beautifully and there is a lot more control over style and spacing, but I would have to buy it, as my 30-day trial is expiring soon. I would also have to learn it, and I do know AppleWorks inside out, which helps for this fussy stuff. Christopher ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale
Re: [Finale] EPS in FinMac 2008 broken? Can anyone check for me?
Ah. I had forgotten that Word couldn't handle PDFs properly. I use Pages myself. Apple just released Pages '08 (part of iWork '08), so you should be able to activate another 30-day trial. But it's only $80 (for the entire iWork suite) so you might as well just buy it, so you won't have to mess around with Word. Re: [Finale] EPS in FinMac 2008 broken? Can anyone check for me?
Dear Chris, These kinds of file corruption problems have cropped up for me too, as you will remember form earlier posts - about a week or ten days ago. I don't have the persistence and computer savvy to follow the solutions through to the end, as you have. But I do want to confirm that I have reached a higher level of frustration with Finale's instabilities than has been the case for a few years. Some of that has been a result of the process of learning new linked part tricks (and some stubbornness about reading the manual), but there seem to be other problems that I'd like to see MM pay attention to. My last two communications with MM support remain unanswered. I don't know what's up with that. Chuck On Aug 20, 2007, at 7:35 PM, Christopher Smith wrote: Update on my problems with EPS export. I was suspecting my edited version of JazzCord (OpenType Postscript font, officially the sort of font that works) or else my freeware version of Dom Casual (TrueType font, this is the one I had pegged as the culprit, since the documentation says no TT fonts can work in EPS export) that I use for a couple of characters in my chord suffixes. I opened a NEW Finale 2008 document, using the factory JazzFont defaults. I created a staff of music and it exported fine, as I always expected it would. Then I copied a passage from my other file (the one that WOULDN'T export EPS properly) to my new file, but without the chords. It exported fine, too. Then I copied the same passage WITH the chords to my new file, so both custom fonts were present. I expected the EPS export to choke on the presence of the TT font, but no, it exported EPS fine, no problem!?!?!? Well, enheartened by this development, I copied the entire document over to the new Finale file, formatted it, exported EPS to my heart's content, and all is well! Apparently, TrueType fonts are perfectly capable of being in EPS files, and mine in particular are no problem at all. I still don't understand what went wrong. The original file still doesn't work, but at least I got all of my two days of work copied over to a new document and the EPS's exported properly. I have seen more file corruption in 2007 and 2008 than in all the previous versions put together. I am hard-put to find a single document in these two versions that hasn't had some sort of strange problem that goes away when I clear the problem measure, or else copy the document contents to a new file. It drives me nuts. Christopher (who now knows more about TrueType, PostScript Type 1, and OpenType fonts than he thought he really needed to know.) Instead of printing the Word document to PDF, I tried Save PDF as Postscript from the Print dialogue. The file got created, but would not open in Preview or anything else I could try, getting an error Postscript Conversion Error. Couldn't convert the Postscript file to a PDF file. then when I clicked OK I got File Error. Couldn't open the file. I have some unusual fonts in the Finale document. I wonder if this is the problem.
