Master Gardener Volunteer Program of Tompkins County is NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS

2018-07-11 Thread Chrys B. Gardener
The Master Gardener Volunteer Program of Tompkins County is NOW ACCEPTING
APPLICATIONS for our 2018-2019 cohort
___
Do you love plants and people? Master Gardener Volunteers are working to make a
more livable, equitable, and vibrant Tompkins County through gardening. Master
Gardeners are students, teachers, moms, dads, grandparents, working folks,
retired people, and anyone else you can imagine. All you need is a love for
gardening, some time to volunteer, and a willingness to complete the training.
Master Gardener trainees should have a basic knowledge of, or interest in,
gardening; enthusiasm for acquiring and sharing horticultural knowledge and
skills; good communications skills; and a willingness and free time to
participate in volunteer educational activities. Master Gardener training is
offered every other year and will be held again from September 2018-May 2019.
Workshops are interactive and hands on. They will be held one Saturday each
month from 8:45 a.m.-1:30 p.m. in Ithaca as well as in surrounding Counties.
Transportation to the out of town workshops is available from our Extension
office.
Volunteers complete a written application, followed by an interview with
members of our horticulture staff. Priority for selection is given to Tompkins
County residents. Scholarships and a sliding scale are available to remove any
financial barriers to participation. This year we are also offering two
scholarships that are exclusively for members of community gardens. In return,
you commit to volunteering 80 hours over the following two years. Master
Gardeners love to be part of a community of enthusiastic gardeners committed to
community service.
If you are interested in becoming a Tompkins County Master Gardener, please
fill out an application at
http://ccetompkins.org/gardening/master-gardener-volunteers and return it to
the contact listed below by August 13, 2018. Interviews will be conducted
during the last two weeks of August. For more information, contact Horticulture
Program Manager Jennie Cramer at jr...@cornell.edu or

Raising Chickens Sustainably
Thursday, November 30, 2017, 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM
CCE Tompkins, 615 Willow Avenue, Ithaca
Cost: $5-$10/person self-determined sliding scale; pay what you can afford

For three years Sean and Sasha of Edible Acres
have been raising chickens for nearly no cost. Inspired by the Vermont
Composting Company, which has been using chickens to help generate tremendous
amounts of compost, they have been sourcing local food scraps, bartering for
whole grain and collecting leaf bags and wood chips to create multiple
wheelbarrow loads of compost per week while raising 50 chickens in a front
yard. The chickens also provide ample amounts of eggs and meat for the table
and for bartering. The techniques and concepts they have worked with can be
scaled up and can easily be scaled down or added in small ways to a backyard
chicken operation. Sean will share lots of photos of their setup and help
people feel empowered to get their chickens working and playing in constructive
and healthy ways.

Thursday, October 12, 2017, 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM
CCE Tompkins, 615 Willow Avenue, Ithaca

Permaculture (permanent agriculture) is a popular and ancient system of growing
food that minimizes labor by using perennial plants, which come back year after
year. Join Sean Dembrosky of Edible Acres
(edibleacres.org) for an evening introduction to the
basic concepts of permaculture. We'll look at living examples of plant guilds,
polycultures, and shed light on some of the concepts that inform permaculture
ethics and design in gardens and beyond.

donate to a rainwater harvesting system for Floral Ave. community garden

2016-11-17 Thread Chrys B. Gardener
Dear Permaculturists,
We currently have a fundraising campaign for the Floral Avenue Community Garden
in Ithaca, which we started a few years ago with a Hunger and Food Security
grant from the United Way..

We are raising funds to construct a 12' x 12' pavilion that we will outfit with
rain gutters and a 500 gallon water tank to harvest water for the garden. We do
not have access to running water at the community garden and this year was very
challenging with the severe drought in upstate NY. There is an inlet nearby but
the City of Ithaca treats the water with an herbicide to control an invasive
aquatic plant, so the water is not safe to use on the garden. This summer the
gardeners had to bring water from home to water their plots.

Most of the Floral Ave plot holders are low income residents who live nearby -
some of them don't have cars so bringing water to the site was very
challenging. Our gardeners include a Burmese refugee who relies on the garden
produce to feed her children and grandchildren, a Chinese immigrant who comes
to the garden almost every day with her granddaughter, and two retired ladies
who live in the low income apartments across the street and had never gardened
before leasing plots at the garden. Altogether there are 20 plot holders at the
garden who all rely on the fresh vegetables from their plots. Last spring we
got a donation of dwarf fruit trees from a local nursery, so in a few years the
trees will be producing apples, plums and apricots for the gardeners to share
as well.

All of the gardeners are helping to raise money for the new pavilion and water
harvesting system. If you can kick in a few bucks I would really appreciate it!
If we can raise $600 in the next week our project will be eligible for an
additional $400 challenge grant from SeedMoney, the fundraising website. Please
click here to donate, and forward this link to your contacts:
https://www.seedmoney.org/campaign/277/floral-avenue-community-garden

Thank you so much!

Storing the Seasons Bounty

Wednesday September 14, 6-8 pm

CCE Tompkins, 615 Willow Avenue, Ithaca

Cost: $5-$10 sliding scale

This is the time of year to consider how you might store the great bounty of
fruits and vegetables you will harvest. You can also take advantage of bulk
buying from area farmers so you can eat local produce this winter. Most people
think that putting food by involves canning or freezing, but you can also keep
some produce for quite some time through proper handling and storage practices.
You may not have a root cellar, but there are easy ways to store roots and
apples even without.

Cooperative Extension will be holding a class on Wednesday, Sept. 14, 6-8 PM,
that covers all the ways to store fresh produce so that it will last for some
time into the fall and winter. Topics covered will include harvesting
practices required for some crops to keep them in good condition, how to store
in heated or unheated spaces in your home or garage, and how to build a root
cellar.

Techniques for storing will be demonstrated during the class.

Master Gardener training, September 2016

2016-07-14 Thread Chrys B. Gardener
CCE Tompkins is offering Master Gardener volunteer training beginning in
September 2016. This training is only offered every two years. Applications are
due by August 7 and interviews will be held in mid to late August.

The Master Gardener Program is a national program of trained volunteers who
work in partnership with their county Cooperative Extension office to expand
educational outreach throughout the community by providing home gardeners with
research-based information. Master Gardeners assist with gardening projects in
their communities, teach classes and workshops, plant and maintain
demonstration gardens at CCETC, provide information and soil pH testing at
events, and answer gardening questions. Volunteers also participate in
specially organized tours, events and social outings.

The cost for training is $75 and scholarships are available. More information,
an application and training schedule can be downloaded from the CCETC Master
Gardener page http://ccetompkins.org/gardening/master-gardeners

This year Tompkins County is joining with Tioga and Broome counties to pilot a
'flipped classroom' model for Master Gardener training in New York State that
will be more active, hands-on and engaging. Trainees will watch videos on
specific gardening topics on their own time, then the trainees will meet
monthly for active, hands-on learning sessions at a variety of horticulture
sites in Tompkins, Tioga and Broome Counties.

Video-viewing sessions will also be organized at CCE for those without access
to a computer, and carpooling will be arranged to the monthly group sessions.

Planting for Native Birds - hands-on workshop
Thursday September 18 from 6:00-7:30 pm

Ithaca Permaculture Park (aka Conley Park), Alice Miller Way between Franklin
and Adams Streets, Ithaca

Cost: Free!
At our current rate of growth we lose 21 million acres of bird and pollinator
habitat to residential development every decade - an area the size of Maryland
and West Virginia combined! This means it's more important than ever for
homeowners to plant shrubs, trees, perennials and annuals that support native
birds and pollinators. In this free, hands-on class participants will help
design and plant a native garden in the Ithaca Permaculture Park (aka Conley
Park). This is an opportunity to learn about native plants that provide food
and habitat for native birds and pollinators as well as best practices for
planting trees and shrubs. This is an outdoor hands-on class so please come
dressed for the weather! Tools and gloves will be provided.

Ash Seed Collection workshop at CCE Tompkins, Thurs 9/18

2014-09-16 Thread Chrys B. Gardener
Ash Seed Collection workshop
Thursday 9/18 from 12:30-3:30 pm
CCE Tompkins, 615 Willow Avenue, Ithaca
Cost: Free

To register for this workshop, please contact organizer Clara Moore at
clara.hol...@parks.nyc.govmailto:clara.hol...@parks.nyc.gov or 718-370-9044.

Native seed collection is imperative for the preservation, conservation and
reclamation of plant communities in decline. Face with the loss of Ash species
as a result of the Emerald Ash Borer, the Mid-Atlantic Regional Seed Bank and
the USFS National Seed Lab are collecting ash seed across New York State for
preservation. Collecting seed is a fast and inexpensive way to reserve
germplasm. By conserving the genetic diversity of ash species before the
populations are lost, we have more opportinities to adequately restore the
species to the landscape once a successful biological control is found.

Participants of this workshop will be introduced to the protocol for collecting
Ash seed, learn how to identify Ash species and learn about preserving genetic
diversity through seed. It is our hope that the information you gain from this
workshop will result in your contribution of ash seed collections to both MARSB
and the National Ash Conservation Project.

Please bring water, lunch, sun protection, bug repellent, appropriate outdoor
clothing and a field notebook.

Ithaca Permaculture Park volunteer session and potluck, Wednesday July 9, 4:30-7:30

2014-07-07 Thread Chrys B. Gardener
Permaculture Park Work Party and Potluck, Wednesday July 9
Work Party from 4:30-6:30 pm
Potluck from 6:30-7:30

The work party will include a talk about the Apios americana (Potato Bean) at
5:30 pm, presented by Dr. Gautam Bhattacharya, who will also be donating
several plants for an experimental garden plot in the park. This vine, which is
also known by other names such as hopniss and groundnut, produces a tuber that
is like a more nutritious version of a potato- similar taste and look, but
almost 4x the protein content (15% vs. 4%.) Apios is very versatile and can be
grown in regular soil but it's also notable for performing well in flooded,
nutrient-poor environments such as swamps. This gives it an advantage if
planted in areas that are vulnerable to heavy spring melts (such as our creek
flooding!) It is also nitrogen fixer and helps regenerate the soil.

Apios is native to the area between Southern Canada and Florida and to the west
as far as Colorado. However it has never been cultivated domestically, perhaps
because the wild plants take a couple years to produce tubers. That makes these
self-sowing perennials a perfect candidate for use in permaculture projects,
which place less emphasis on immediate crop yields and allow for more patience.
Dr. Bhattacharya's crops were acquired from stocks created during a breeding
experiment at Louisiana State University. He is currently attempting to set up
a study on them at Cornell. They've been planted in several local areas, such
as the meadow at Beebe Lake, and we're excited to add them to the park as both
an educational resource and a food producer!

Spring Into Gardening
Saturday March 29, 9 am - 5 pm
Cornell Cooperative Extension-Tompkins County
615 Willow Avenue, Ithaca NY

Had enough of winter yet? Start spring off on the right foot by learning skills
to grow, cook and preserve your own fresh organic fruits and veggies!
This year's Spring Into Gardening theme is Gardening and Climate Change - learn
how sound gardening practices can reduce greenhouse gas emissions while
reducing your 'food miles'. There will also be classes on preserving the
harvest and cooking with renewable energy sources.

Cost: $8.00 per workshop, or register for four different workshops for just $25!

Workshop descriptions and a downloadable brochure are available at

Spring Into Gardening 2014 - Workshop Descriptions
9:00 am - 10:30 am
Gardening in a Warmer Climate: Gardeners and farmers know that our climate is
changing and we have to adapt our growing methods. Climate change means
increased opportunities, such as a longer frost-free season and warmer
temperatures for heat-loving crops, but it also can bring challenges such as
droughts and new insect pests and diseases. The Master Gardeners will share
some tips for taking advantage of the longer growing season and new plants to
try out in your garden, as well as information on preparing your garden for
longer dry spells and dealing with new insect pests and diseases.

Water-Wise Gardening: Climate change is altering the rainfall patterns - our
region is predicted to receive fewer rain events of increased intensity.
Gardeners need to be prepared to harvest and store rainwater to use during dry
spells, and also to design gardens that can absorb run-off during heavy storms.
Sharon Anderson, CCE Environmental Program Leader, will present information on
using rainwater harvesting systems and planting 'rain gardens'.

10:45 am - 12:15 pm
Composting Strategies to Reduce Greenhouse Gases: We all know how composting
can reduce our trash disposal costs, but did you know that, when done properly,
composting can also help reduce greenhouse gases? Composting helps sequester
carbon in soils, improves the water-holding capacity of soils, and reduces or
eliminates the need for fertilizers and pesticides. The Master Composters will
share information on the best composting methods and techniques.

Extending the Growing Season: Learn about different strategies to extend the
growing season into the fall and winter. Margo Hittleman and Richard Lansdowne
will present information on constructing high tunnels and low tunnels to grow
greens all winter, and Chrys Gardener will talk about solar greenhouses, which
require no additional heat and can be used to grow salad greens in winter.
There will also be a hands-on demonstration on constructing an inexpensive
light stand from PVC to grow plants under fluorescent lights.

Canning Garden Fruits and Vegetables: Canning is a great way to preserve some
of the garden harvest for winter. This class covers the science of food
preservation and how to safely can high-acid foods,, such as tomatoes, fruits
or pickles. Participants will receive up-to-date information and see a
demonstration of canning by CCE Consumer Educator Carole Fisher.

12:15 pm - 1:14 pm: Lunch Bring a brown bag lunch to eat at CCE or go out to
a restaurant or café downtown

1:15 pm - 2:45 pm
Unusual Fruits and Perennial Vegetables for the Ithaca Area: Sean Dembrosky,
owner of Edible Acres in Trumansburg, will talk about less-common fruits such
as paw-paw, persimmon, hardy kiwi , currant and jostaberry, and perennial
vegetables such as cardoon, sea kale, skirret and air potato. Sean will also
lead a hands-on demonstration on taking cuttings from jostaberry and hardy
kiwi. Participants will take home cuttings from these plants for their own
gardens.

Using Biochar as a Soil Amendment: There's a lot of buzz lately about biochar
and its role in boosting soil fertility and sequestering carbon in soils.
Created through a process called pyrolysis, biochar locks in and stabilizes
carbon that decomposing green waste would otherwise release back into the
atmosphere as CO2. In the form of biochar, that carbon can be returned to the
soil where it will continue to store carbon while increasing water retention
and air capacity as well as providing habitat for soil microbiology, which
helps cycle nutrients. John Gaunt from GreenTree Garden Supplies will talk
about what biochar is and how to use it, and he'll have biochar samples to show.
3:00 pm - 4:30 pm
Worm Composting: No space for an outdoor compost pile? The Master Composters
will teach you all you need to know about vermicomposting, an indoor
composting system that is

Permaculture planting in conley park, ithaca

2013-09-19 Thread Chrys B. Gardener
There will be a volunteer work party at Conley Park on Saturday September 21
from 9 am - 12 pm. Conley Park is on the opposite side of Cascadilla Creek from
CCE, tucked between the Sciencenter and Neighborhood Pride.

We will be sheet composting some of the existing beds which are mostly just
weeds right now, and planting some interesting edible species like bush cherry,
chestnut, lemony quince, paw-paw, hardy banana and jujube, as well as more
familiar fruit trees like apples, plums etc. The goal is to create a
permaculture demonstration with edible plants as a model for other parks in the
city, and Cornell Cooperative Extension will also use the park as a teaching
and demonstration garden site.

The volunteer session is one of the farm-a-thon sites for Greenstar's Food
Justice Summithttp://foodjusticesummit.org/ that day, so people can sign up
as Farmer-Champions on their website to help raise funds for the Food Justice
program, or you can also just show up at the park that morning to help out for
a few hours. We will have tools and wheelbarrows available for volunteers.

Baker's Acres, 1104 Auburn Road (Route 34) North
Lansinghttp://bakersacres.net/
Nothing says fall like eating a fresh apple picked right off the tree! In
addition to carrying one of upstate New York's most complete selections of
flowering perennials, Baker's Acres also has a mature apple orchard with 25
varieties of old favorites like Macintosh, Macoun, Cortland, Gala, Empire and
Jonagold, just to name a few. Take a wagon ride* around the nursery and stop
off at the orchard where you can pick ten pounds of apples and get five pounds
for free! Then take a stroll through the beautiful display gardens and find
inspiration for your own garden - fall is the perfect time for new plantings,
and many of their trees, shrubs and perennials will be on sale for this event.

Baker's Acres was founded 30 years ago by Bob and Jackie Baker. Now managed
by daughter Reenie Sandsted as well as Cathy Kessler, the nursery features an

you can watch demonstrations of various deer repellent products and techniques
that they use, including fences, barriers, and repellents at 11 am, 1 pm and 3

For 34 years, Cayuga Landscape's mission has been to create and maintain
imaginative and sustainable landscapes in Tompkins County, NY. They are a

Der Rosenmeister is a rose nursery specializing in climbing and rambling

Lee Ginenthal spends much time researching, traveling, and collecting newly

Growing Hazelnuts in NYS, Saturday August 3

2013-07-30 Thread Chrys B. Gardener
Can hazelnuts (filberts) be grown in as a commercial crop in New York State?
Visit the rural property of Dawn and Jeff Zarnowski in McGraw, Cortland County
on Saturday August 3 and learn about the possibilities. The Zarnowskis have
been growing hazelnuts for some fifteen years and they will explain the basics
of hazelnut growing and give a tour of their hazelnut plantings.

This full day program is sponsored by the New York Nut Growers Association and
will feature presentations by leading horticulturists and plant breeders from
Cornell University, Rutgers University, Minnesota and Oregon. These
presentations will introduce new cultivars of hazelnut that are resistant to
disease and freezing. They will report on successful steps taken to mechanize
hazelnut planting and harvesting to allow for larger scale commercial
production.

The full program agenda is available online at
www.nynga.orghttp://www.nynga.org. The program is free and open to the public

Free YardMapping Session, Monday July 15

2013-07-09 Thread Chrys B. Gardener
Free Yard Mapping Session at Tompkins County Public Library

Monday July 15, 6:00-8:00 pm

Are you interested in helping to create more bird-friendly habitat in your
neighborhood? Come to a free session on how to use an online program called
YardMap, hosted by Professor Josh Cerra of the Cornell University Department of
Landscape Architecture. Professor Cerra will talk about the goals of YardWorks
and how to get involved in the project. He will demonstrate how to use the
YardMap program and laptop computers will be available for participants to map
their own yards at the session, or you can bring your own.

The YardWorks project is a project partnership between the Cornell Laboratory
of Ornithology's YardMap program and Cornell Landscape Architecture, and in
collaboration with Cornell Cooperative Extension. YardWorks offers an
opportunity to work with multiple landowners on coordinating larger networks of
bird-friendly habitat at the scales of both their neighborhood and their yards.

Enter to win free landscaping plans for your neighborhood!
YardWorks is currently looking for two communities within the state of New York
to work with our landscape design studios to develop goals and plans for more
bird-friendly habitats, and are hosting a competition for interested
neighborhoods. It is very easy to submit! Each neighborhood must have at least
five participants willing to work with a professor-student team to create
schematic plans and design concepts for their property and the surrounding
area. The contest deadline has been extended to Monday July 22.

You do not need to attend the free Yard Mapping session to enter - you can also
just go to the YardWorks website at http://www.yardmap.org/ and map your own
yard (this takes about 10-15 minutes) then encourage four of your neighbors to
map their yards and enter your group into the contest. Your neighborhood could
win free landscape consultation and customized garden plans from Cornell's
Department of Landscape Architecture, to help make your neighborhood an
incredible habitat for birds and people!
