 Hi,

 this morning fink attempted to update gnuplot. However, the build
 failed. Below are the error messages from the end of the build.
I have latex installed from i-Installer and the gwtex package. I
 put some soft links in /usr/local/teTeX to point at the directories
 in /usr/local/gwTeX to get system-tetex to install successfully.
 Gnuplot installed successfully in the past with this configuration.
I spent a few minutes hunting through makefiles for a clue as to
 what was going on but I couldn't really find where directories were
 being created. In the end the build fails when it can't find /sw/src/
 fink.build/root-gnuplot-4.2.0-2/sw/share/texmf-local
If it would be helpful, I could post more of the output of the
 build. If this problem is caused by my contorted kludge for system-
 tetex, I'll try to find some other solution.
 Thanks for any help

 Hi fink users,
I have a MAC-OSX with intel core 2 duo processor. I wanted to install

 following trouble in installing g77.
   1. First I came to know that g77 is an unstable package. So, I enabled
 unstable packages.
   2 . Then I installed Xcode_2.4.1 from apple developer's toolkit( as a
 requirement).
3. Then when I tried to install it using Fink commader, after trying to
 compile it for a while, it failed and recommended self-
 update.(or try my luck in fink user's mail).
   4. But after I updated Fink commander, I could not find g77 as a pckage in
 the list.
 instead it has a gfortran-shilbs which according to GNU is under construction
 .
 So, can any of you give me some idea how I can install fortran compiler in my
 Mac?
 Yours sincerely,

Jagannath: g77 is not available on intel. Try g95 instead ('fink
install g95').

 The offending part of this file gcnsc.f is a statement function
 named RANGES (P,P1,P2). After I manually replaced that function by a
 standard function definition, everything worked fine, and pgplot
 is now installed. If anyone is interested in this manual fix (which
 is obviously a work-around for a g95 bug), here's what I did:

 Only the file pgplot/src/pgcnsc.f needs to be changed.

 (1)
 comment out the lines defining the statement function:
 C  RANGE (P,P1,P2) = (P.GT.MIN(P1,P2)) .AND. (P.LE.MAX(P1,P2))
 C 1  .AND. (P1.NE.P2)

 (2)
 Change the line
LOGICAL FLAGS(MAXEMX,MAXEMY,2)
 to
LOGICAL FLAGS(MAXEMX,MAXEMY,2), RANGE

 (3)
 At the end of the file, append the following:

logical function range(P,P1,P2)
real P, P1, P2
range = ((P.GT.MIN(P1,P2)) .AND. (P.LE.MAX(P1,P2))
   1  .AND. (P1.NE.P2))
return
end

 I've tested some of the demos both under xwindow and under AquaTerm,
 and everything seems to work as expected. In particular, the contour
 line drawing (pgdemo3), which caused the compilation problem, works
 as well.

 Jens

Jens: This problem is fixed in the 20060608 snapshot of g95, which I
will commit this morning.

snapshots. I expect it to be fixed in the next snapshot, but for now it
would probably work if you downgraded to an older version (one of the
200605 snapshots).

Maybe a rebuild of python24, and/or matplotlib is in order, being sure

The problem is that g77 is dead. It has been killed by the gcc
developers. It doesn't come with gcc-4.0 any more, and it seems that
earlier gcc versions don't exist and don't build on Mac/intel. You
would have to try to switch to gfortran. Lots of Fink packages have
the same problem right now, but how big the problem really is is not
yet known, because the big switch to gfortran hasn't yet seriously
started.

I'm going to update gcc4 (which includes gfortran) to 4.1 today, and
then start updating packages to use gfortran instead of g77. Hopefully
we can get rid of the g77 package before too long.

I had done a selfupdate and an update-all on my 10.3.9 machine
yesterday, and now updated matplotlib-py24 after all the other
installations had already been successfully completed. In my case,
there were no errors. So maybe the order in which updates are
performed matters somehow. There is a dependency on tcltk
frameworks which causes the problem in your setupext.py; but this
dependency is correctly listed in the package info; so you might
just want to try updating everything else before updating matplotlib.

Well, I haven't figured out how to get around it. I don't have any
out of date packages. I've rebuilt python24 and tcltk for good
measure. What else can I try?

Robert,
I looked at the script causing the error and found that there indeed
seems to be a bug in it. It doesn't affect me probably because I have
framework versions of Tcl and Tk installed in /Library/Frameworks: the
script setupext.py checks for the existence of the following files:

/Library/Frameworks/Tcl.framework
/Library/Frameworks/Tk.framework
If it finds these (as it does in my case), it never reaches the
statement where your error message originates.

So I would guess that you don't have the two files above. In that
case, the script performs a different test, and that one has the bug.
It's a missing line right after line 295 in setupext.py - the
incorrect code is

def Find_tcltk():
Finds Tcl/Tk includes/libraries/version by interrogating
Tkinter.

o.tcl_lib = /sw/lib
o.tcl_inc = /sw/include
o.tk_lib = /sw/lib
o.tk_inc = /sw/include
o.tkv =
return o

and it should be replaced with

def Find_tcltk():
Finds Tcl/Tk includes/libraries/version by interrogating
Tkinter.

o=FoundTclTk()
o.tcl_lib = /sw/lib
o.tcl_inc = /sw/include
o.tk_lib = /sw/lib
o.tk_inc = /sw/include
o.tkv =
return o

I don't know if that's the only bug, but that one is definitely in
need of fixing.

Regards,

Jens

  now pass.

  Thanks for working on this, Jeff. Unfortunately, '-fno-
  underscoring' conflicts with how other libraries built against
  Fortran typically seem to be built.

  For example, when I build a code that's linked with the HDF
  libraries, I need to use '-fno-underscoring'. On the other hand,
  if I link against pgplot, I can't use that option. I

  Unless I update pgplot (and all the other fortran callable C libs,
  such as netcdf and ncar graphics) to use -fno-underscoring also.

 Well, I assume that would work as well - at least for me. I think
 you maintain all of the packages on fink that I use that would be
 affected. I've got some packages I've installed myself outside of
 fink, but I could easily configure them to do the same.

  This problem seems to be a result of NCSA hardcoding xlf name-
  mangling conventions for all their libs on OS X (I had to use the
  same trick to get hdf5 to work with g95).

 That's a bit annoying on their part. I wonder why they did that?

 Thanks,
 Mike

Mike: I don't know - but I think I found the last place that xlf name
mangling was hardcoded (by grepping the source for __APPLE__!). Try the
latest version from cvs unstable (revision 4) - it should work without
-fno-underscoring.

handle  this issue.

It looks like the Fortran bindings have been compiled differently in
the latest version (hdf-4.2r1-2) than they were in previous versions
(ie, hdf-4.2r0-3). The trailing underscores have been left out of
the new versions. This causes unresolved symbol errors.

Just as an example, under hdf-4.2r0-3:

% nm /sw/lib/libmfhdf.a | grep -i sfend
004c T _sfend_
0054 T _sfendacc_

And under hdf-4.2r1-2:

% nm /sw/lib/libmfhdf.a | grep -i sfend
004c T _sfend

It's not just those two symbols, but many (all? - I haven't checked)
of the Fortran symbols. I expect I could work around this by use of
one of the -f underscore options, but that can sometimes make things
tricky when using multiple sets of libraries.

Reverting to hdf-4.2r0-3 has fixed this issue for me. Is this an
actual problem, something I'm not handling correctly, etc? Is there
a better fix than I've mentioned?

Anyway, thanks to all. . .

Mike

Mike: Seems like a problem with the update. In 4.2r1 the configure
scripts assume you are using xlf, which does not append underscores.
I've tried to make it use g77 conventions, but apparently I didn't get
everything. About half the symbols have underscores at the end, and
half don't! I'll look into it.

-Jeff

Mike: I believe I finally have a workaround for this. I've updated the
package to use '-fno-underscoring' when compiling the library. At least
that way all the symbols now have the same underscoring convention
(identical to xlf's). The fortran tests now pass.

Thanks for working on this, Jeff. Unfortunately, '-fno-underscoring'
conflicts with how other libraries built against Fortran typically
seem to be built.

For example, when I build a code that's linked with the HDF libraries,
I need to use '-fno-underscoring'. On the other hand, if I link
against pgplot, I can't use that option. I

Unless I update pgplot (and all the other fortran callable C libs, such
as netcdf and ncar graphics) to use -fno-underscoring also.

This problem seems to be a result of NCSA hardcoding xlf name-mangling
conventions for all their libs on OS X (I had to use the same trick to
get hdf5 to work with g95).

this issue.

I'm not sure what the solution is though. :-(

The general solution is to get libsz loaded by the linker there. The
particular solution is to pass -lsz explicitly or to have whichever
lib*df.dylib uses those symbols to be linked against libsz.dylib so
that an explicit -lsz isn't needed. Differential diagnosis of the
underlying problem: is one of those lib*df.dylib missing a link to
libsz.dylib (upstream, packager, or libtool problem) or is one of the
the lib*df only present as a static lib (thereby not getting the dyld
indirect link for libsz symbols)?

dan

Dan: The problem is the latter. When I get some time I'll try to make
the hdf package make a dylib.

This is now fixed in 10.4-transitional - by adding a BuildConflicts:

Hi Alexander: CVS isn't working for me right now, but the fix seems to
be to add export CXX=gcc at the beginning of the CompileScript.

Everything is almost ok, but I get an annoying error, no matter

Error: No paper information available - using defaults

As an aside: even setting errQuiet to yes in ~/.xpdfrc is able to
shut it up.

But something is wrong because:

$ pdfinfo test.pdf
Error: No paper information available - using defaults

Page size:  396.85 x 595.276 pts

so it actually /has/ the information and AFAICS uses it for

message.

Might be connected to libpaper?

Christian:

set the PAPERSIZE environment variable to the paper size you want (i.e.

Gabor: To quote Dave Vasilevsky from an earlier post:

This problem seems to happen because the python2* packages write the
current MACOSX_DEPLOYMENT_TARGET to %p/lib/python2.3/config/Makefile and
the python build utilities use this value when compiling modules. This
means that if you have a python24 from 10.3 (from the bindist or by
upgrading 10.3 = 10.4), there will be a mismatch between what python
thinks MACOSX_DEPLOYMENT_TARGET should be and what it actually is.

I'd rebuild python24.

You are free to install the aqua tcl/tk package, but most of the fink

you can't 'replace' the fink tcltk dependency with a manually installed
aquatcltk.

The main reason for this is that many apps can't use both aqua and x11

remotely over an ssh tunnel (although it's not quite as pretty).

Ah--you've explained why this only occurred on one of my computers but
not the other, even though I have xorg installed--the machine on which

I bet most users won't scroll back looking for hidden messages from

Thanks for looking into this, I've just run into the problem again
after postponing the update for some time.
I'd suggest at least as a short-term solution you could create a tipa
package and make it a BuildDepend of pyx.
I've put the attached .info file into my local tree, and was able to
update pyx-py23 smoothly afterwards
(the tipa src download failed at the first attempt though, only then
did fink switch to a CTAN mirror).

I think this is the right idea. Thanks for starting work on the tipa
package. I have a few remarks on your info file, but I prefer to shift
the discussion to the package submission tracker. Since the pyx
update tracker item is already long enough, I am starting a new one
(item 1087677).

I am copying your info file there, too. So everybody is welcome to
look at the package and to leave their remarks on the tracker. We
should soon be able to put this into Fink.

I see from the pyx web page that 0.7.1 no longer depends on tipa.

Michael: I've just downgraded the xemacs package (in both stable and
unstable) to 21.4.15 (the latest stable version) from 21.5.17 (the latest
beta version). The latest stable version seems more, well, stable -
hopefully it fixes your problems. Just wait a few hours for the mirrors
to catch up, and do a fink selfupdate; fink update xemacs.

-Jeff
P.S. The only reason that we used the beta version originally was that it
used to be the only version that worked on OS X. Since then, OS X fixes
have apparently been backported to the stable branch, so it makes sense to
make that the default now. I can add an xemacs-beta package if some
people really want it.

No - the package builds both single and double precision libs.

2) why the --enable-altivec options is omitted?
Because not everyone has a G4 or G5, and the thought is to have the
package build exactly the same on every system (including G3s).
Uhm, but looking at fftw manual I've found:
--enable-sse, --enable-sse2, --enable-k7, --enable-altivec: Enable the
compilation of SIMD code for SSE (Pentium III+), SSE2 (Pentium IV+), 3dNow!
(AMD K7 and others), or AltiVec (PowerPC G4+). SSE, 3dNow!, and AltiVec only
work with --enable-float (above), while SSE2 only works in double precision
(the default). The resulting code will still work on earlier CPUs lacking the
SIMD extensions (SIMD is automatically disabled, although the FFTW library is
still larger).

So it seems that you can use --enable-altivec (with --enable-float) even with
not-Altivec CPU (like G3s). Isn't it?
Yep - looks like you are right. I'll change that in the next revision.

Re: [Fink-users] Pine 4.60 and mime types (crash)Z

Claus: I can confirm this behavior - word attachments do not open, and
pine may crash when viewing an HTML attachment. I still use my .mailcap

more worrisome to me, I'm looking into it.

Re: [Fink-users] xaw3d build failure... (was dia font problem?)

2004-04-12 Thread Jeff Whitaker
On Mon, 12 Apr 2004, Martin Costabel wrote:

 Martin Costabel wrote:

 After some more investigations, I have to take this back. I think now
 that this is indeed a serious problem between xaw3d and xfree86-4.4.0.

 I had previously tried to build xaw3d only on Apple's X11 and on
 xfree86-4.3.99-16, where it works. Now I have built Fink's xfree86-4.4.0
 and get the same error as you.

 The difference between these versions is that the file
 /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/config/darwin.cf
 in the newer version has a line

 # define XawI18nDefines -DHAS_WCHAR_H -DHAS_WCTYPE_H -DNO_WIDEC_H

 which it did not have before.

 The problem is that xaw3d in its file XawI18n.h understands the flag
 -DHAS_WCTYPE_H, but it doesn't honor the -DNO_WIDEC_H flag that seems to
 be there exactly for excluding the non-existing #include widec.h.
 Therefore xaw3d needs to be fixed (maintainer CCed). Either the file
 XawI18n.h has to be patched, or there may be a newer version around that
 doesn't have this problem (not sure).

 If I make a diff between the XawI18n.h in the xaw3d sources and the one
 in the xfree86-4.4.0 sources, I see exactly this difference (among others)

   #ifdef HAS_WCTYPE_H
   #include wctype.h
 +#ifndef NO_WIDEC_H
   #include widec.h
   #define wcslen(c) wslen(c)
 [...]
 +#endif
   #endif

This is now fixed in 10.3 unstable. Thanks Martin.

there. Add --with-python or whatever you want to the ConfigureParams

/sw/etc/fink.conf.  Finally, fink update vim.

 What I'm unsure of is what I can change and yet still have it be part
 of a fink installation. Would any updates to vim require me to fiddle
 with the configure script before each installation?

If the vim package is updated to a revision number higher than the one in
your local directory, a fink update-all will replace your version. To
get around this, call your vim package vim-python and add

Conflicts: vim
Replaces: vim
Provides: vim

to the .info file (this is what is done for the vim-nox package - you
might just use that one as a starting point).

Hope this helps.

 I ask because I have a program to build that links
 together c, c++ and f77 code. The fact that were are
 using a gcc 3.3 for c and c++ and f77 from gcc 3.4

 Also I found that the -fcpu_subtype_ALL flag seems
 to be missing from stock gcc 3.4's g77. It would be
 great if that option exists for g77 in the Apple

 The following 4 additional packages will be installed:

 Does this help at all?

Kip: No. You have system-xfree86 installed, which means you have Apple
X11, which is version 4.2. If you want abiword, you must remove your
Apple X11 installation first, then install abiword (which will install
pango1-xft2-dev pango-xft2-shlibs xfree86 xfree86-shlibs).

You are correct. It causes problems for g77 = 3.3, but not 3.4.

 BTW is there a way to globally specify -lcc_dynamic for g77 3.4? All
 my fortran packages in fink are now breaking all over the place with
 the errors below, and it would be nice not to have to submit manual
 corrections for all of them.

Not easily. Which fink packages are broken?

This only happens when you use cc as a linker, or link a c object file
with your fortran code. I don't think code compiled and linked with g77
3.4 will give this error.

 A quick google search indicated the problem might be that g77 was built

 without the -fno-common flag. Is this likely to be the source of my

 problem, or is there something more obvious that I'm missing?

Re: [Fink-users] perlmagick/ImageMagick

2003-07-19 Thread Jeff Whitaker
On Fri, 18 Jul 2003, andy law (RI) wrote:

 Anyone using the above combination to create image files (or do anything else for
 that matter)?

 I did some prototyping work in December and all worked fine. Now the same code does
 not work anymore. ImageMagick has presumably been upgraded during an update-all.

 I have OSX 10.2.6

 Fink Commander reports ImageMagick to be 5.5.6-1 and perlmagick-pm to be 5.5.4-2
 although perlmagick-pm560 is apparently 5.5.4-3.

 Running the example script...

 #!/usr/bin/perl -w
 use Image::Magick;
 $image = Image::Magick-new;
 $image-Set('size'='100x100');
 $image-ReadImage('xc:white');
 $image-Set('pixel[49,49]'='red');
 $image-Write('filename'='./abc.gif');

 results in no errors and no output.

 The same thing with a Draw command instead of a Set pixel command causes an
 exception with 'No image defined'?

 Any clues?

Andy: I updated the perlmagick-pm560 package in unstable to 5.5.6 and now
your example script works fine.

Unfortunately, the ImageMagick folks like to change their API about every
release.

 on 3 different Macs. The good thing for this lyx installation is that
 fink's qt2 package when compiled with g++2 actually seems to survive
 a fink update-all (I just tried this) - so it doesn't get rebuilt
 with g++3.
 This could also be bad if some additional package is subsequently
 installed
 that needs qt2 with g++3 compilation... but of course I like it the way
 it is.

 Anyway, lyx/X11 with QT2 is now my favorite version (I also tried the
 Aqua version, but its nice antialised appearance doesn't make up for
 the unsatisfactory meta- and control key usage).

 Jens

Jens et al: By popular demand, I've now added a lyx-qt package to fink.
It uses qt-x11 compiled with g++2, and seems to work fine (it indeed does
solve the meta key problem with xforms and Apple X11).

Just fink-selfupdate cvs; fink install lyx-qt to get it.

(you need to have the unstable tree enabled).

package. It's been working fine for me.

 Second, I am having trouble building the info documentation files. Here
 is the error when I run make in the /sw/share/doc/python23/doc/info
 directory:

 Unknown environment: comment

Hmm. It is a beta after all. I always use the web docs on python.org, so
I never noticed.

 not very elegant. Also, it would be nice to have a shared version of this

The fink g77 package provides libg2c.a (and g77, of course).
No shared version, the gcc folks don't support shared versions of libg2c

Re: [Fink-users] new information on lyx meta key woes

2003-06-27 Thread Jeff Whitaker
Daniel: The meta key does work if you run lyx inside a vnc session (for
both the lyx bindings and the xforms UI elements). To try it, install the
vnc package, start a vncserver and connect to it using a vncviewer
(http://cotvnc.sf.net is a good one). Certainly slower the Apple X11, but
it works. This suggests that it is indeed a problem with xfree86 - you
might want to mail the XonX list about it.

-Jeff

On Thu, 26 Jun 2003, Daniel M. Bikel wrote:

 As some of you know, the LyX Meta key does not appear to work properly on
 MacOS X. I have some more specific information on this. After an e-mail
 exchange with Jeffrey Whittaker, the maintainer of both the xforms and LyX
 ports for fink, I/we have determined that the Meta key *does* work when you
 have the proper xmodmap settings, but *only* for LyX key bindings. The
 Meta key does *not* work for accessing the xforms-based UI elements.
 (Thank you, Jeff; you were very kind to help me figure this out.)

 Normally, a labeled xforms UI element will have one of the letters in its
 label underlined, typically the first letter. You can access the UI
 element using the keyboard by typing Meta and then the letter: this will
 make it as though you clicked on the element with your mouse. For example,
 to cause the File menu to pop up, I can normally type Meta-F on my Linux
 box at school. On MacOS X, such keyboard shortcuts have never worked, with
 any combination of XFree86 or window manager. The problem is not a bug in
 the port of xforms (or LyX) per se, because even when LyX is run remotely
 on, say, a Linux or Solaris box, and is displayed on a MacOS X host running
 either XDarwin or Apple's X11, the problem persists: one cannot access the
 UI elements using the Meta-key shortcuts.

 So, here's my question: can anyone think of a way I can debug this problem?
 If not, whom should I contact to fix this bug? The xforms team? The XonX
 project? The XFree86 project? Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I
 depend heavily on using LyX using the keyboard, since mousing around is
 just too damn slow. :)

 Thanks in advance,
 Dan.

Re: [Fink-users] Error while updating via cvs

  ../lib/.libs/libh5tools.a -L/sw/lib -L../../src/.libs -lhdf5 -lz -lm
  ld: Undefined symbols:
  _H5Tis_variable_str

 This is actually happening while compiling hdf5. The problem is the
 -L/sw/lib; the existing installation of libhdf5 in /sw/lib will be the one
 that is linked to, and not the one that is in ../../src/.libs, which comes
 later in that line. But it looks like the new libhdf5 has this symbol
 HSTis_variable_str that the old one does not.

 I was able to do fink remove hdf5 (remove the old version) and then fink
 update-all; this way the old library wasn't there to interfere. You might
 be able to do that, or you might run into dependency problems trying to
 remove it. In that case you are going to have to pull some kind of a hack.
 It doesn't look like /sw/lib is specified anywhere in the file

 /sw/fink/10.2/unstable/main/finkinfo/sci/hdf5-1.4.5-1.info

 So I think the -L/sw/lib part is coming from your environment variables.
 Check for this in things like LIBRARY_PATH or CFLAGS, unset those, and try
 to update-all again (you don't need to modify any files; just change the
 variables in the current shell).

 I have noticed that '/sw/lib/libfreetype.6.dylib' has been installed via
 fink,
 and this library seems to provide what 'display' looks for.
 But the error message complains about the library in /usr/X11R6/lib

 What can I do to make Imagemagick work on my system?
 Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
