[flexcoders] Re: dynamic method attachment to SharedObject
Hi Dominick, Thanks for your inputs, but can you please ellaborate on this? I tried to search on the client property for SharedObject. What I got is: client:Object [read-write] Indicates on what object callback methods should be invoked. The default is this. You can use this property if you have two data handlers that have the same set of methods, but act differently depending, for example, in an application with two windows where a button in one window toggles the view in the other window. I am not sure what they mean from the above documentation. I know this is too much to ask, but would you please explain it to me with a snippet on the same? Thanks in Advance. [flexcoders] Re: JTwain and Flex
Hi Andrew Thanks for your inputs. The flow which I have been able to achieve till now is : 1. An MXML file which calls a JS function embedded inside it (I was able to accomplish this using Abdul Qabiz's _javascript_ injector component). 2. The JS function opens a new HTML (popup) page which inturn has Applet tags tolaunch the applet which does the job of scanning. 3. To upload the scanned image, I have written a servlet. The appletconverts the java.awt.image object into a ByteArray and then by putting it into a serialized object, I am able to send the image to the server. But is there a way to invoke the applet without having an HTML file to call it? That is, instead of Flex -- JS -- new HTML popup -- JTwain Applet, cant we just have Flex -- JS -- Applet ? Your thoughts on this ? Thanks, Rohan. --- In flexcoders@yahoogroups.com, "Andrew Trice" [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Rohan, We are working on similar functionality here at Cynergy Systems. Look at the FileReference class (http://livedocs.macromedia.com/labs/1/flex20beta3/langref//flash/net/Fi leReference.html). If there is no physical file, you will need to create a method that allows you to send the image data to the server. This could be done using a servlet to open a socket between your applet and your server and send the image data across the socket (assuming you are using a java backend). _ Andrew Trice Cynergy Systems, Inc. http://www.cynergysystems.comBlog: http://www.cynergysystems.com/roller/page/andrewtrice Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Office: 866-CYNERGY From: flexcoders@yahoogroups.com [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of tinywhistles Sent: Monday, June 26, 2006 9:37 AM To: flexcoders@yahoogroups.com Subject: [flexcoders] JTwain and FlexHi I am using JTwain to read a scanned image from the Client UI. For this, I have written an applet which will detect the source attached to the client's machine, scan the image and show it on the user's browser. Then, by using Applet-Servlet communication, I need to store this image in the server's file system. Though this has been possible to achieve, I need to keep my UI as Flex. So, I need to call the applet from inside my Flex UI and render the image on the browser. Also I need to use the file upload functionality to upload this image to the server. Has anyone worked on a similar engagement? How can I use the File-Upload feature to upload the image(java.awt.image object) to the server from my Flex UI ? [flexcoders] Flex/Cairngorm/CF upgrade notes
Updated the Flash player OK in a WINE Firefox, but a freshly recompiled flex app now has lots of nasty bevel borders on it. Unexpected. The import's and dispatchEvent's in all Cairngorm 2beta apps need to be changed, which is a pain but not totally unexpected. According to the new complier, mx.rpc.Fault doesn't have a description anymore, but the reference docs on flex.org still point at the 2beta3 docs on labs so I can't see how to change our fault handlers. Pain. *Finally* got a copy of the CF 7.0.2 updater, installs OK (SUSE 10 x86_64 linux). Starts OK. Version in CF admin reports as '7,0,2,142559', so it's gone over the top of the 'Mystic' beta OK. flex-enterprise-services.xml from Mystic has been renamed services-config.xml but it's a simple cut and paste job to get destinations and channels copied into the right bits of the new file. Flex2 remoting to/form CF, Cairngorm 2beta, Coldspring 1 and Reactor latest are all confirmed working OK. I'm off to hack at our Flex2 code to get it to run with the new compiler and Cairngorm now, wish me luck :-) -- Tom Chiverton This email is sent for and on behalf of Halliwells LLP. RE: [flexcoders] Cairngorm 2 Events ! Arghhhhhhhhhh !
Hey Jean-Luc, I'm in meetings all week, so you won't get much email response from me for rest of week. In the release notes, we talk of this, and we'll blog of our intentions shortly ... but yes, at the end of the day the beta, and the feedback we had internally and from the community, drove a number of discussions that make us believe that it's a better practice - as we had in Cairngorm 0.99 - to keep a separation of Cairngorm events from other events. Perhaps one of the other members of the team will be able to elaborate further; if not, I'll try and blog something on our design decisions later next week. Alex Uhlmann I believe is going to blog something that will allow you to achieve a simpler migration path, but our expectation is that it's not the most painful thing you're going to have to do. app now has lots of nasty bevel borders on it. Unexpected. This is fixed by recompiling with the new SDK. the reference docs on flex.org still point at the 2beta3 docs on Docs on Adobe's site (when available) are up to date though. Re: [flexcoders] FB2 :: Switchig Workspaces
Hi Mike, Glorious day! :) FB2 is a full version of Eclipse. It is just Adobe's own distro (think of the many Linux distros). So you can have all your features, plug-ins and everything else and not lose any functionality. I think the goal of making Flex Builder a plugin was so that everyone who has already been using Eclipse doesn't have to change their existing setup. I think an Adobe personnel would have to tell us if they hard wired anything in their distro. Correct me if I'm wrong. Judah Michael Schmalle wrote: See this is the thing; I'm not using the plugin, never used Eclipse for Java and haven't used Ant. Just swallowing to many things at once. I have Eclipse installed and used the plugin for beta2 but, since I mainly use FB2 for component development I didn't see a need for the full meal deal. Am I wrong here? I asked this question awhile ago and remember someone saying that if you need certain things from Eclipse, use the plugin. I really am not an Application dev, so I didn't see the need. As far as I see it now with the standalone, using different workpsaces limits all the different projects that I don't want to look at given my current component development set. Peace, Mike -- Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any one thing. You can have anything you want - if you want it badly enough. Now I am trying to filter it the otherway around, ie., In the above xml definition I want all the employee elements for which the department child element is missing. Therefore I want the employee with name sandra morey above. I tried all these expressions to no avail: var noDeptEmployees:XMLList = employees.employee.(child(department) == null); var noDeptEmployees:XMLList = employees.employee.(child(department) == ); var noDeptEmployees:XMLList = employees.employee.(department == null);//throws error. var noDeptEmployees:XMLList = employees.employee.(child(department)[EMAIL PROTECTED] == null); var noDeptEmployees:XMLList = employees.employee.(child(department)[EMAIL PROTECTED] == ); What is the e4x expression to get employee elements without department's. thanks in advance for the answer. [flexcoders] Large scale app, how to proceed?
Hello everyone. I have beeen following flex for quite sometime during the beta process. I am currently beginning work on a large scale web based application. We are basically migrating several different apps, some web based, some java based, to a new platform. We have spent the last couple of months exploring a JSP based solution running on Resin and connecting to a java based API with MySQL on the back end. I am now considering flex. The app is a medical management based app that will consist of several different modules which all provide different, though related funcitonality. Things like browsing a medical claim, enter a medical bill. I have a couple questions. 1. IS flex well suited for large, multi module apps? Can it provide any real advantage or JSP? 2. Is the application just one big MXML file with many states or lots of little MXML files? Or a combination of some kind, such as each module is an MXML with different states? 3. IS FDS the best way to interact with a java API or are there other ways? 4. HOw do I run the app? Can it run on resin? I see it can be deployed as a WAR file but have yet to figure out how to do that. Sorry for all the questions. Flex looks very interesting, but I am nervous that the learning curve and not knowing the best way to do things will really hurt us. We have been building web based apps for years using HTML, CSS and JS and really have been able to do some really great things. But the idea of a single integrated front end dev app without worrying about browser issues is enticing. Yahoo! Groups Sponsor ~-- See what's inside the new Yahoo! [flexcoders] To implement Master Detail Datagrid in Flex

It's not necessary to change any item in the detail grid. Whenever the parent grid is selected again, the detail grid is made invisible and the parent grid is shown completely. [flexcoders] Flex Builder 2 - Intel Mac etc
As the purchase of Flex Builder 2 is almost upon me I need some clarity on where/what may happen in regards to Intel Macs. I'm hoping to make the switch sometime soon( end of 2006) and wondered what the ramifications are regarding the chances of getting my Windows version (the one I willl need ASAP) running on a Mac (Not under Bootcamp or similar but in the Mac OS proper) and or some kind of upgrade path to the Universal version (if there is such a thing) Is this tied into Eclipse itself? I had assumed that a plugin for Eclipse worked on whatever platform you wanted. I had imagined (vainly) that maybe I could drop my Flex Builder 2 into a Mac version of Eclipse and voila ! Isn't this what the dream of Java was/is. Surley the makers of software being released in mid 2006 have some kind of plan for this Anyone? Regards Wayne McFetridge -- Yahoo! Groups Sponsor ~-- Yahoo! [flexcoders] Flex documentation innaccurate and broken :-(
The new flex docs haven't all been updated, and the samples no longer work. I'm having problems with getting DataTips working in the RTM version, but not having much joy. See docs here: http://livedocs.macromedia.com/flex/2/docs/wwhelp/wwhimpl/common/html/wwhelp.htm?context=LiveDocs_Partsfile=1271.html Code doesn't compile due to "name" attribute now being "displayName", and with that correction, datatips don't work - they appear as small boxes in the top-left hand corner with no data. Anyone know how to get these working, and/or when the docs might be fixed? Jason, Thanks. I guess I just got mixed up since it's a little unnatural to instantiate a class to call a method that should be static! However, there is no easy way to do this using the Flex SDK EmailValidator.as. Ideally, I would think I could call a static method which would return me a ValidationResultEvent, which I could then add to my component. However, everything with the SDK EmailValidator class requires a listener/source/trigger to be bound to it and no matter what I try to doit looks at that To: field as one big String...I can't give it just the iterated split value. Re: [flexcoders] Large scale app, how to proceed?
Hi Dude, I'll do my best to answer a few of your questions. mthielman11 wrote: Hello everyone. Yes. Flex was built to scale to the conditions you describe. It also uses a new ActionScript Virtual Machine AVM1 in Flash Player 9 that is extremely fast. 2. Is the application just one big MXML file with many states or lots of little MXML files? Or a combination of some kind, such as each module is an MXML with different states? Depends what is being built. What I have seen that works, is that you have one main application mxml page and numerous other mxml components or mxml files. There is documentation being written now exactly on how to go about this. There is also a thing called Cairngorm that has a sort of setup already created for large scale enterprise level apps that you can use to get right to it so to speak. 3. IS FDS the best way to interact with a java API or are there other ways? 4. HOw do I run the app? Can it run on resin? I see it can be deployed as a WAR file but have yet to figure out how to do that. You publish to a SWF file and upload that a server. The SWF is embedded in an HTML file. The SWF file makes calls to to myriad of services on the server similar to how a form is submitted in html. Flex also uses addtional protocol called ActionScript Message Format or AMF if you will. AMF allows for highly compressed and extremely fast communication. A lot of additional resources are coming out as soon as next week. I'm talking about books here. There are already new articles daily online. I am confident that Flex will be the best tool for the job. [flexcoders] switching from beta 3 to the real thing?
Hi all,I've been working on a fairly large application for the last months. This project is the final thing i need to do before graduation, so it's very important everything works. The deadline is next week tuesday (6 days away) and I would love to hand in a version that is final, in stead one working from the beta. But, as always with projects I have quite a list of last minute fixes that need to be done and I have no idea how much time it will take switching from beta 3 to the real deal. So the question is, how much time does it take to switch over? Are there parts of code that changed drastically, are there any area's I could expect problems? If things don't work next week it means I'll fail, won't graduate and have to do my internship all over, costing 5 months. So, I'm hesitant to jump on the boat. But man, flex 2 is tempting! RE: [flexcoders] Flash player is not a debugger?
I'm still having issues too. I tried uninstalling the v9 player and installing the debug version from FlexBuilder\players\debug. Then it wouldn't run at all (said I had no v9). So I uninstalled the lot, and renamed all the ocx files in %windir%\system32\marcomed\Flash and then reinstalled both (normal player first, from adobe site, then debug player), and I still can't run in debug mode. Can anyone on the RTM version confirmwhether they can run in debug mode? Would be nice to know it's our setup, and not a global issue. I can't see my Trace statements or hit breakpoints as things are :-( -- The information contained in this e-mail and/or any attachments is confidential and intended only for the individual(s) to which it is addressed. [flexcoders] Re: Flash player is not a debugger?
I can't see how a couple of us could have the problem though. i cleaned everything from beta, even went throuh the registry after i seen i was having problems. Have not had a problem since alpha version like this one. i honestly can't think of anything else to try. :( jason --- In flexcoders@yahoogroups.com, Daniel Tuppeny [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: On a colleagues machine here, it works fine. Regular mail not getting through. I'm having the same problem been working to solve it all day. No luck. Just can't seem to get a debug working in IE. Firefox works. I even went as far as to clean any and all flash related stuff from my post. Did not help a bit. Are you all on another local other then US, it may have something to do with it.. RE: [flexcoders] Flash player is not a debugger?
GB here. I wondered if it might be because we chose not to install the Yahoo toolbar! ;-) From: flexcoders@yahoogroups.com [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Jason HawrylukSent: 28 June 2006 15:14To: flexcoders@yahoogroups.comSubject: RE: [flexcoders] Flash player is not a debugger? I've been fighting with the same problem all day :(. Not sure what the heck it is, never seen this before, and been using flex since alpha... It works with FireFox, but not IE. I'm starting to loose my mind here. What is thedebug version and where must it be in order to debug and how to get the right version? Could it be that we are in a none US local ? What local are you in?
