Shlomo,
Of course--having a default contradicts requiring a value to be specified!

I don't know if my previous message on this thread made it through, but
FM's notion of attribute default values came directly from SGML/XML.

RE: Copying master page layouts and graphics

2005-12-19 Thread Lester C. Smalley
You're right, of course, that there is a function that let's one apply
specific master pages based on content, which I did forget about in my
reply to Stacie. I meant simply that it was not automatic upon the
importation of the page layouts. Thanks for the extended clarification.

On Saturday, December 17, 2005 07:19 PM, Bodvar Bjorgvinsson wrote:

|
| Well, actually it is. If you had set the rules in the
| reference pages to apply master page First (or whatever
| name you may have given it) to e. g. the Chapter Title
| paragraph tag, updating the book has an option to Apply
| master pages. With that option checked, and the master pages

| Lester and Art, the master page First will indeed be
| applied to each chapter.
|
| You can also go to each chapter and go to Format Page Layout
| Apply Master Pages (I think I have this right, writing this

| the same way, but only on the current file. It is all in the

|
| Actually, if you haven't yet done this with the first file,

| (along with all other things selected and in place), so you
| should really start by your first chapter (or any otherwise
| ready chapter) and:
|
| Format Page Layout Apply Master Pages. This will prompt
| you with a message saying that no reference page exists for
| applying master pages, but one will be made (if you go
| through with this). Do that.
|
| Then go to the reference pages (View Reference Pages) and
| you will find this as the last reference page. Do the changes
| there according to the FrameMaker 7.0, The Complete
| Reference (which is probably the book you are mentioning as
| Complete Reference) or the User Guide, setting the Master
| Page First to the paragraph format tag that you are using for
| the chapter title. Then, do the Format Page Layout Apply
| master pages again, and you will find that the fist page has
| changed.
|
| Then you can select all but the first chapter file in the
| book file and import to these the formats again, but the only
| part that needs to be checked now is Reference pages. This
| should do the trick.
|
| Just check this out. Good luck.

Joy,
If you are running on Windows XP there is a second maker.ini file that
contains the coordinates of various dialogs. Take a look in C:\Documents
and Settings\user name\Application Data\Adobe\FrameMaker\7.0. In the
.ini file look for CCatalog=1063, 410, 130, 354. These were the last
coordicates of the character catalog. Change the coordinates to
something like 307, 158, 130, 354 and you should see it again.

It *is* possible to move it off-screen so far that
you can't grab it any more. In that case, it's
gone forever. ;-0 Just kidding! It doesn't
have to be a bad hair day... ;-)

With Frame closed, open maker.ini (or fmsgml.ini
if you use FM+SGML 6 or earlier) in the Frame
home directory with a text editor like Notepad.
Find the CCatalog entry under [DialogLayout],
and edit the first two numbers to be 0, 0.
That's the screen position, and will put the
catalog in the top left corner; you can then
move it to wherever you really want it. Make
sure the last two numbers are *not* 0; they
are the width and height, 130, 180 is good.
So you might wind up with:

[DialogLayout]
;- Dialog Window layout -
MakerWin=3, -1, -1, -1, -1, 0, 0, 640, 400
PCatalog=500, 40, 130, 180
CCatalog=0, 0, 130, 180
 ...

RE: Unresolved cross-references and missing graphics

2005-12-19 Thread Linda G. Gallagher
Julie,

This is what I call phantom unresolved cross references, a phenomenon that
I believe started with version 6. I've been able to get rid of these
phantoms by opening the file that is reported as having one or more
unresolved xrefs, saving the file as .mif, opening the .mif file, and saving
it back as .fm (overwriting the old file).

In some circumstances, which I've admittedly not delved into deeply, this
happen regularly. I think that conditions have something to do with it.

We've made that process a *lot* easier with the latest Mif2Go

which does just what you want... without disturbing any other
MIF file you might have present. It will also wash a whole
book in one shot, including the .book file itself. And it's
really fast, a few seconds tops for most files.

It works fine from the demo version of Mif2Go, and we approve
of commercial use of this feature with the demo, so it costs
nothing to add it to your toolkit. Download and install the
(unlimited) demo from:

We're going to add more free goodies like this (and runfm.exe)
regularly. It's not just for the season. ;-)

IIRC, when Frame checks cross-references, it checks them all,
including those in hidden conditional text. But if the xref
source is hidden, it reports the xref as unresolved. It's
best to use Show All when checking (or rechecking) xrefs.

With this scheme, you don't need numbering flows, e.g.
Chaps Whatever Sects Figs Tables Eqns Steps
Substeps
 Chapter\ <$chapnum>< > < =0> < =0> < =0> < =0> < =0> <

| Well, actually it is. If you had set the rules in the
| reference pages to apply master page "First" (or whatever
| name you may have given it) to e. g. the Chapter Title
| paragraph tag, updating the book has an option to "Apply
| master pages". With that option checked, and the master pages
| and reference pages imported as previously described by
| Lester and Art, the master page "First" will indeed be
| applied to each chapter.
|
| You can also go to each chapter and go to Format > Page Layout

|
| Actually, if you haven't yet done this with the first file,
| importing formats including reference pages will do nothing
| for you but copy the master page "First" to the other files
| (along with all other things selected and in place), so you
| should really start by your first chapter (or any otherwise
| ready chapter) and:
|
| Format > Page Layout > Apply Master Pages. This will prompt
| you with a message saying that no reference page exists for
| applying master pages, but one will be made (if you go
| through with this). Do that.
|
| Then go to the reference pages (View > Reference Pages) and
| you will find this as the last reference page. Do the changes
| there according to the "FrameMaker 7.0, The Complete
| Reference" (which is probably the book you are mentioning as
| "Complete Reference") or the User Guide, setting the Master
| Page First to the paragraph format tag that you are using for
| the chapter title. Then, do the Format > Page Layout > Apply
| master pages again, and you will find that the fist page has
| changed.
|
| Then you can select all but the first chapter file in the
| book file and import to these the formats again, but the only
| part that needs to be checked now is Reference pages. This
| should do the trick.
|
| Just check this out. Good luck.

It *is* possible to move it off-screen so far that
you can't grab it any more. In that case, it's
gone forever. ;-0 Just kidding! It doesn't
have to be a bad hair day... ;-)

With Frame closed, open maker.ini (or fmsgml.ini
if you use FM+SGML 6 or earlier) in the Frame
home directory with a text editor like Notepad.
Find the "CCatalog" entry under [DialogLayout],
and edit the first two numbers to be "0, 0".
That's the screen position, and will put the
catalog in the top left corner; you can then
move it to wherever you really want it. Make
sure the last two numbers are *not* 0; they
are the width and height, "130, 180" is good.
So you might wind up with:

[DialogLayout]
;- Dialog & Window layout -
MakerWin=3, -1, -1, -1, -1, 0, 0, 640, 400
PCatalog=500, 40, 130, 180
CCatalog=0, 0, 130, 180
 ...

Actually it's also there for Win 2K Pro. The last element is
7.1 on my system. The second copy (which overrides the one in
the Frame home directory) started appearing with Frame 7.0.
I always forget about it... thanks, David!

Unresolved cross-references and missing graphics

2005-12-19 Thread Linda G. Gallagher
Julie,

This is what I call "phantom unresolved cross references," a phenomenon that
I believe started with version 6.

We've made that process a *lot* easier with the latest Mif2Go
upgrade, 44. We added an item to the File menu, "Wash via MIF",
which does just what you want... without disturbing any other
MIF file you might have present. It will also "wash" a whole
book in one shot, including the .book file itself. And it's
really fast, a few seconds tops for most files.

It works fine from the demo version of Mif2Go, and we approve
of commercial use of this feature with the demo, so it costs
nothing to add it to your toolkit. Download and install the
(unlimited) demo from:
  http://www.omsys.com/dcl/download.htm

We're going to add more free goodies like this (and runfm.exe)
regularly. It's not just for the season. ;-)

>In some circumstances, which I've admittedly not delved into deeply, this

IIRC, when Frame checks cross-references, it checks them all,
including those in hidden conditional text. But if the xref
source is hidden, it reports the xref as unresolved. It's
best to use Show All when checking (or rechecking) xrefs.

Finding Conditional NON-text

2005-12-19 Thread Lin Surasky
Hi all-

Is there a way to include non-text items in a search for condition tags?

I know how to locate text that has certain conditions applied to it, but
what about doing a search for table cells or anchored frames that have a
condition applied? Does the text inside the table cell(s) have to be
conditional, or is there another way to do this?

Thanks

Apply Default Attribute Values

I stated:
"If such an attribute is declared to be "REQUIRED",
either the EDD, the DTD, or both MAY specify a default
value (i.e, one of the specified values in the
name-token group."

What I was attempting to say (and not very well) was
the case where the DTD specifies an atttribute to be
REQUIRED, but the EDD specifies it as optional so that
a default value can be specified, which I suspect may
be what the originator of this thread was dealing
with. Clearly, that default value would not be
exported by FrameMaker, and thus an error would occur.

If the attribute is specified as OPTIONAL in both the
EDD and the DTD, and both the EDD and the DTD specify
a default value, that value should not be exported,
because the DTD should determine the default value.

The internal errors are related to missing graphics when FM6.0 or
FM+SGML6.0 are used on Windows XP. There is a specific patch for FM6.0,
available for download from adobe.com, which fixes this problem:

Those old book numbering blues

Yup, I'm now well-educated on complex numbering formats. In fact, I used to
know all this from pre version 5 days (honest), but I'd archived the knowledge
since the advent of simpler schemes based on $chapnum and named threads. I
rarely use multi-level numbering.

Thanks to your and Roger Shuttleworth's help, I am now well re-educated and
have numbering working exactly as I want. Roger was particularly patient with
me as I floundered my way through sorting the problems out, even to the point
of telling him firmly that it did not work when it did.

This subject needs better explanation than it gets in the user guide. One thing
that is specifically counter-intuitive and needs to be spelled out very firmly
is that fact that separate numbering fields within a thread do not necessarily
map to separate level counters in a multi-level numbering scheme, which is what
one might intuitively expect.

My thanks to all.
