Trouble with Translated Text Insets

2006-04-19 Thread Jan Tharp
  Hello Framers,
I am knee-deep in a large FrameMaker 7.1 glossary, with nearly 1,000 text
insets for the definitions. I believe the original concept was to use them as a
single-source for software screen documentation. Life was a lovely until we
translated the text insets into another language, requiring me to send the
files away and having them opened on another computer. When the files came back
from the translator, the text insets (by Reference) seem to manufacture their
own link path, and thus are unresolved. This effectively breaks the link to
the text inset.
I tried saving the file as a MIF and editing the text inset path with a
search/replace, but the file is just too big and locks up Notepad.
Does anyone have any suggestions for either a) getting the text inset path to
not change or b) globally update the path?
  I greatly appreciate your help.

Hi, Jan:

You can open a MIF file in Word, edit, save as text.

AND, you can open a MIF file as text in FM by pressing and holding
Shift (or maybe it's Ctrl) while clicking Open (or double-clicking)
the .mif file in the Open File dialog box. Choose Each Line is a
Paragraph. Use find/replace to do your work. Save the file As TEXT to
a new name, with .mif extension.

This Shift/Ctrl technique interrupts FM's automatic conversion of the
MIF file into a screen-ready FM file.

Printing Thumb Tabs

2006-04-19 Thread donandjudy1
Hi, folks:

With the help of several stalwart frameusers, I successfully created thumb
tabs along the edge of a version of my fixit book.
However, my inkjet printer won't print close enough to the edge for the tabs
to bleed. It will create the tabs with the text which can be viewed by
flipping through the book sideways, but they won't show when the book is
closed.

And I know that laser printers require even larger blank margins than
inkjets. So, perhaps this option shouldn't be offered to the on-line
customer without a warning. Or perhaps the tabs should be reformatted to
represent what can be realistically printed. Pity.

I have a vague recollection that, in the recent days when I was ferreting
out the tab formatting problem, someone wrote about the printing
difficulties of bleeding tabs, suggesting larger paper and cutting it
afterwards. But I can't find that e-mail. Furthermore, this doesn't seem
practical when one considers that most folks can only print on longer (14),
not wider paper.

Perhaps bleeding tabs can only be handled by professional printers and
therefore included only in a hard bound version, not a print at home PDF.
True or false? Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Our department decided to keep the bleeding tabs even on the print at
home PDFs so we wouldn't have to maintain two versions of the doc and
there wouldn't be a reformatting issue if the doc did go to print
production.

Marsha,
The problem is that you have not specified the number of columns in the
table. If the number of columns is fixed, you can specify it with a r/w
rule. Otherwise, specify it in an XML-only attribute of the Table element.
If you use the name cols for the attribute, you won't need a r/w rule.
Otherwise, use a rule such as:

attribute myattname is fm property columns;

Thinking XML: Review of RFC 3470: Guidelines for the Use of XML
Uche Ogbuji, IBM developerWorks

In this article the author surveys the IETF's take on XML best
practices. XML was designed specifically for use on the Internet ('the
Web' to be precise), and many Internet protocols use XML to represent
data and documents. XML has thus become important to all the major
standards organizations developing Internet technology, and not least
the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), an organization whose
technical papers drive most Internet protocols from e-mail to Web
communications, and beyond. In order to provide consistent quality of
XML used with such IETF technologies, the IETF developed a set of
guidelines, RFC 3470, entitled Guidelines for the Use of Extensible
Markup Language (XML) within IETF Protocols. This article expands upon
the valuable advice provided in RFC 3470. Ogbuji: Despite a few
quibbles, I think RFC 3470 is an excellent document.

The screenshot didn't come through (lists don't allow attachments),
but my guess is that you *do* have two flows. This can happen if
you Ctrl-drag a text frame a tiny bit; you get a copy of it on top
of the original one. It's easy to do this by accident when editing.
You need to delete the frame that is *not* in the exact position it
should be; check the position by Ctrl-clicking on the frame, then
looking at Graphics > Object Properties. One of the two frames
should have slightly different properties than the ones you see
whan you check a frame on a different page; that's the one you need
to delete.

Hi, Don:

Look thoroughly through your printer's settings and options,
especially any labeled "advanced." Some offer the ability to print
closer to the edge of the paper with the caution that these edge
areas may lose some quality.

Also, search your printer-manufacturer's Web site for solutions on
printing closer to the edge on your model. There may be a newer
printer driver or other workaround.

Our department decided to keep the bleeding tabs even on the print at
home PDFs so we wouldn't have to maintain two versions of the doc and
there wouldn't be a reformatting issue if the doc did go to print
production.

For all intents and purposes, that's true. Some inkjets let you print
"borderless," but it's mostly the more expensive 6-7 color photo
printers. All the lasers I know about have a non-printing border.

Face it, if you want a professional-looking book, use a professional
printer, not some cheap "home office" inkjet.

Marsha,
The problem is that you have not specified the number of columns in the
table. If the number of columns is fixed, you can specify it with a r/w
rule. Otherwise, specify it in an XML-only attribute of the Table element.
If you use the name "cols" for the attribute, you won't need a r/w rule.
Otherwise, use a rule such as:

 attribute "myattname" is fm property columns;

Printing Thumb Tabs

2006-04-19 Thread Grant Hogarth
Yup-- you are pretty much SOL if you want to print bleeding tabs on
anything but a professional printer. Even those are usually (99%+ in my
experience) printed with the expectation that the pages will be trimmed
to a smaller size. I'd leave the tabs in, as they are still useful when
flipping thrugh the book (as you noted). If anythin, I'd create a
template for a "universal" (A4/US Letter) page, and apply that page to
the FM book before creating the PDF, as any user who prints the doc will
be printing to that size of paper, and then either stapling or ring
binding the output.

You could always offer "tab inserts" for an added price, I suppose.

Subject: Printing Thumb Tabs

Hi, folks:

With the help of several stalwart frameusers, I successfully created
thumb tabs along the edge of a version of my fixit book.
However, my inkjet printer won't print close enough to the edge for the
tabs to "bleed." It will create the tabs with the text which can be
viewed by flipping through the book sideways, but they won't show when
the book is closed.

And I know that laser printers require even larger blank margins than
inkjets. So, perhaps this option shouldn't be offered to the on-line
customer without a warning. Or perhaps the tabs should be reformatted to
represent what can be realistically printed. Pity.

I have a vague recollection that, in the recent days when I was
ferreting out the tab formatting problem, someone wrote about the
printing difficulties of bleeding tabs, suggesting larger paper and
cutting it afterwards. But I can't find that e-mail. Furthermore, this
doesn't seem practical when one considers that most folks can only print
on longer (14"), not wider paper.

Perhaps bleeding tabs can only be handled by professional printers and
therefore included only in a hard bound version, not a print at home
PDF.
True or false? Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

In order to provide consistent quality of
XML used with such IETF technologies, the IETF developed a set of
guidelines, RFC 3470, entitled "Guidelines for the Use of Extensible
Markup Language (XML) within IETF Protocols." This article expands upon
the valuable advice provided in RFC 3470. Ogbuji: "Despite a few
quibbles, I think RFC 3470 is an excellent document."

(Newbie) Structured FM Question: Notes, Tips, etc.

2006-04-19 Thread Lin Surasky
Hi all-

I'm brand-spankin' new to this structured stuff, so please bear with me
and my ignorance

We have a fabulous unstructured template that has 4 different table
formats our writers use to insert alerts (Notes, Tips, Important facts,
and Warnings). All of the table formats are single-row, two-column
layouts, but each table format (named zNote, zTip, etc.) is unique in
two ways: the color of the column rule and the paragraph tag used in the
first column of the table, which corresponds to the type of alert (note,
tip, etc.). For example:

 |
Note | Note text goes here. Note text always uses one
 | of two paragraph formats: Note or Note Bullet.
 |

The word Note (or Tip, etc.) is actually a graphic on the reference page
that the paragraph format zAnchorNote calls. When a user inserts a Note
in the unstructured template, the paragraph formats are automatically
assigned. So if a user inserts a Tip and they choose the zTip table
format, the word Tip automatically appears in the first column, because
the table format is using zAnchorTip, which calls the right graphic from
the reference page

Okay... So here's my structured question, in case anyone's still
reading.

What's the best way to implement this and still get the same end result?
Should I not be using tables? The closest I can get is inserting a table
with the same paragraph format assigned to both table cells, which I
don't want. How do you specify one paragraph format for one column and a
different format for the second column?

Thanks for any and all help!

Some PDF Links Not Working

2006-04-19 Thread feimin_lore...@amis.com
I'm using FrameMaker 7.2p158, Distiller 6.0.0 5/15/2003, and Windows XP.

We recently noticed that a lot of the cross-references in FrameMaker
didn't translate into working links in the PDF. I use Save As... to turn
it into a PDF. When you put the cursor over the link, it changes to a
pointing finger, but when you click on the link, it doesn't go anywhere.

I've tried updating the cross-references, and I've tried the XRef Wizard
from West Street Consulting, and I've searched for Unresolved
Cross-References, but everything seems fine in FrameMaker. If I replace
the cross-reference (by simply double-clicking on it, opening the source
file, clicking Replace in the dialog box), then it works. However, I can't
get xrefs to figure captions and table captions to work, no matter what,
and I would prefer to not have to replace every cross-reference in the 3
problem manuals.

This problem is happening in both structured and unstructured FrameMaker
documents. I'm also flipping back and forth between FrameMaker 7.1 and 7.2
because FinalDraft only works with 7.1.

Any ideas or suggestions?
