Word count question

2006-08-22 Thread Mark Southee
When doing a word count on frame files with lots of conditional text, do
I need to show all to get an accurate figure for all text or does the
word count ignore the conditional text settings?

Re: FIles of old FM versions

2006-08-22 Thread Art Campbell

I think you may not have been able to open your old file because of
file corruption,
not because FM 7 can't -- it certainly can. FM is backward
compatible through all versions.
What error messages do you get when you attempt to open it?
Did you try opening the FM file with anything else? Like FM in text
mode (holding down the CTRL when you select it)? or a hex editor?

Re: Frame query .tpl?

2006-08-22 Thread Art Campbell

Because .tpl is a file extension that the client who sent you the
file made up, not
a valid extension that neither the OS or any program know anything about.

Either rename it with an .FM extension or use the Folder control panel
in Windows to map .tpl to FM (not really a great idea if you think you
may ever get other files with that extension).

Re: FIles of old FM versions

2006-08-22 Thread Peter Gold

Hi, Klaus:

Do you see any messages when you try to open the file?

FrameMaker 7.x can read FrameMaker files as far back as 4.x, I believe.
Your file may be corrupted. One technique that might help is called
OpenHeroic. This bypasses FrameMaker's validation checks that are
usually performed when opening a file. You perform it with these keystrokes:

* Tap and release Escape
* Tap and release lowercase o
* Tap and release uppercase H
* Locate the file in the openFile dialog box.

With a virtual environment or an old Windows 3.1 machine some bootstrapping
   process should be possible.

Well there still is the problem of reading it physically (a diskette format
no more in use, MO disks etc.). I guess that things must be reconstructed

BTW does anyone know the details of the header information? What does the

Egwin,
  Possible approaches are:

1) If none of the 42 subelements can ever contain more than 255 characters,
you can make them markers (possibly of a custom marker type called Metadata).

2) Make them conditional text that is hidden when you publish the document

3) Use the FDK to move them to a reference flow

4) Display them in white in a small font. Such characters still take up
space. You can eliminate the visual effect by putting them in a table with
a fixed row height, or by putting them in a text frame that is behind the
frame with the visible characters.

Conditional tags and translation (FM and Trados)

2006-08-22 Thread mathieu jacquet
Dear all,

this is not a pure FM problem but here it is: are conditional tags handled
by Trados's extension S-Tagger for FrameMaker?

I'm currently writing procedures to repair hydraullic motors. The client has
large powerful motors and smaller ones. Repair procedures are somehow
different depending on the size of the motor, but not totally different. My
idea was to use conditional tags (1. "big" motor size ; 2. "little" motor
size).

We have to translate these documents into several languages later, but i've
been said not to use conditional tags, because Trados do not handle them.

You must have experienced this in the past... Any help appreciated!

Mathieu.

Color questions

2006-08-22 Thread Scott White
I have two cmyk images that I copied into Framemaker 7.2 on the PC. They are
both made by Makita. Makita's color is a teal/aqua color.
One image looks teal/aqua in color like it should, however, the other image
looks blue/green like the coral reefs in the Caribbean. In photoshop the
images are not the same density of -- the good one is darker in nature than
the bad one.
Why does Frame display like this? Is there a fix in Frame? In photoshop I
can fix the image but its time consuming and a lot of trial and error.
The bottom line is I have a client who doesn't want to send his files out to
the printer but print them on a color printer. Thus his images do not all
look correct when printed on the business printer.
Any help, suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi all,
Our IT department just upgraded the Acrobat Distiller on my PC to
version 7.0 and now when I try to convert my Frame (v 6.0) documents to
PDF, all of the colors in the document appear in black and white. I've
already tried changing the Color Settings in Distiller, but I'm not
having any luck.

Can anyone give me some advice on fixing this problem?

Thanks in advance,
Jennifer

CMYK Images in Frame

2006-08-22 Thread Scott White
I have two cmyk images that I copied into Framemaker 7.2 on the PC. They are
both made by Makita. Makita's color is a teal/aqua color.
One image looks teal/aqua in color like it should in Frame, however, the
other image looks like Seafoam -- a greenish, blueish color. In photoshop
the images are slightly different in color, brightness and contrast.
We always send out files out to print thus we have never discovered this
problem.
Any help, suggestions would be appreciated.

Table heading rows

2006-08-22 Thread Gillian Flato
How do you convert a table row into a table heading row? In the top row
of my table, when I highlight the row, it says Body cells, instead of
Heading cells like the top rows in other tables. How do I convert the
row, or how do I add a heading row above it.

It's probably a really simple answer but I am just blanking out on how
to do it.

Thanks,

Gillian Flato
