Multi-level notes?

2006-08-28 Thread Daniel Azuelos
Is FrameMaker able to manage multi-level notes?
With each note level defined by its own numbering tag and
paragraph format.

What I didn't manage to get is a set of footnotes looking like:

1. level 1 note (notes from the author)

2. another level 1 note

a. level 2 note (notes from the reader)

b. another level 2 note

If FrameMaker can't easily manage this, which software provide this
function with approximatly the same quality level than Frame?

Thank you for your help.

RE: Monitor issue

2006-08-28 Thread Ridder, Fred
Unless you can't handle the higher purchase price (which does get
offset somewhat by lower power consumption) or are a hard-core
gamer (and need the fastest possible screen imaging), I don't see
any good reason not to buy an LCD monitor at this point.

There are a couple of things to bear in mind, though.

-LCD screens only look good at their native resolution. If the native
resolution is higher than you're used to on your CRT, you may not
be happy with the smaller size of things like icons and dialog boxes

-You get much higher image quality with LCD monitors that support
digital (DVI) input. Lower-priced LCD monitors may only be analog.
If you're looking at Dell LCDs, the critical trademark to look for is
UltraSharp, which equates to digital input. But this also assumes
that your video card has a DVI output; if not, you'll want to upgrade
it to optimally drive your monitor.

My opinions only; I don't speak for Intel.

Hi Framers,

After four years of operation, my Dell monitor, Model D1626HT just went
south. So if
I may, I'd like to solicit your thoughts on a high quality 20 monitor
that won't
bankrupt my resources. Are today's LCD monitors in the $350-$500 price
range up to
the task, or does one have to spend over $1000 for equivalent results?

I do a great deal of work in Photoshop and of course FrameMaker, using
WinXP Pro, SP2.

Many thanks in advance,

Endnote used to process mif, but it appears that this is no longer the case. I
have not it tested though.

So, will the word processing documents be compiled once they are written?
Perhaps your writers can use Cite As You Write in Word and then have those
documents brought into FM when done. That way all the reference lists will be
complete and the citations will be correctly matched. It may be useful to
consider linking the documents so that any further changes can be updated. All
you need to ensure then is that they follow the rules of formatting (something
that seems to be very difficult to enforce with users of MSW, I've found).

Re: Bibliographic software for FM?

2006-08-28 Thread Art Campbell

My oen (limited) experience, from crafting my own thesis and doing
several academic books is that with Frame, the easiest way to craft
Chicago-style footnotes and eventually a bibliography was to create
kind of a flat-file database. By that I mean creating a separate FM
file with a unique set of tags, one tag for each element in a
citation: Title, Author, Year, etc.

Enter the information using the appropriate tags, one chunk of info to a line.

In the actual FM working files, in the footnotes, set up
cross-references to the appropriate entry, so that the footnote is
built from a set of cross-references.

If you're really good, you can make the source file the bibliography
file too. ;- )

Unlocked file can not be edited - surprise

2006-08-28 Thread Klaus Daube

   Dear all,

Just to tell you a recent surprise:

   - FM file with legel information is locked for editing

   = unlock with ESC, F, l, k

   - Text can still not be selected for editing

= It appears that all text is on the masterpage ...

   Klaus Daube

   BTW

In my diskette archive (a copy on CD) I have discovered the 1994 edition of
FMs famous Frame Connections Online Resource Guide as FM 4.0 files. I will
make a PDF out of this and put it into my FrameMaker history on my website.

This discovery proves the ability of FM 7 to read FM 4 files! No I'm
definitely convinved of the backward compatibility so many have told me
   recently!

A no-brainer yes, but the other way round. A 19 all too often only has
1280x1024 resolution. A 20 non-widescreen has 1600x1200 and will allow
you to display a full page (A4) at a reasonable zoom percentage.
For document editing, a 20 widescreen (1680x1050) isn't the best
choice: fewer vertical pixels means you're scrolling more.

Depends on the image.
- Vector graphics should be resizable without any loss of quality.
- Raster/pixel graphics: when you zoom in it's inevitable that the
individual pixels become visible. If this is the issue, you need
better-quality images to begin with.
Also, the Distiller settings can degrade picture quality. Check the
compression options in the Distiller job options.

Re: Quieries related to Frame maker

2006-08-28 Thread Karen Mardahl

Hi Jaya

You asked several questions, including:

1. Is there any option available to generate pdf s using a script on a
Unix machine without opening the Framemaker?

My understanding is that the answer here is No.

One of my engineers developed a program to take some information from
Unix that uses XML and turn it into a MIF file in FrameMaker. This
becomes a major part of a chapter that I need. I open it and save it
as an .fm file in my Windows version of FrameMaker. He is a very
clever programmer, if I may say so, and he did try to produce the MIF
file without opening FrameMaker, but he could not. This means he could
not roll out this solution to other programmers because they do not
have FrameMaker licenses. In this particular situation, he would love
some sort of floating license for the department. This was turning
into a bigger project that either of us had time for, so we have not
researched any farther. At this point, my information to you is
therefore, no, you will have to open FrameMaker.

Others may have different insights, but I hope this helps a bit.

regards, Karen Mardahl

fmbatch and fmprint are the utilities that ship with FM that would do this.
FMbatch would have to save as a .pdf; fmprint would print to a logical
printer instance of Acrobat Distiller. Details are in the manual and
on the Adobe support site.

2. During conversion I would like the script to check for other tasks
as well like missing hyperlinks, cross-references etc. My query is what

The short answer is that unless you fix problems before you run the
scripts, they'll
fail. So you basically need to make sure the books are solid ahead of time.

3. What are the options of resizing a large image without compromising
on the quality? The scaling option messes up the resolution.

More details, please.

4. How does one enable the add comments option in the PDF?

In Acrobat 7, not FM, use the Enable Comment tool for people to use
Reader to add comments. In Acrobat 6, you can comment if you have the
full version of Acrobat, but cannot use Reader.
Again, details are in the Acrobat manual and on the support site.

Yes, it is *possible* to buy an very expensive 20 monitor

realistic savings for dropping an inch from 20 to 19 is
about $100 or roughly 25%, which is about the same

So I'd say that the sweet spot is currently shifting from

Quick Access Bar can not be switched

2006-08-28 Thread Klaus Daube

   Dear gurus

At the ETH in Zurich FM 7.1p116 english international is installed.

I have not found the source for the following problem:

It is not possible to switch the Quick Acces Bar with the small blue
triangles. Nothing happens when clicking on one of them. The only means to
get to the various buttons is to switch to the Vertical Toolbar. This
however, does not provide tool tips (because it is a FM palette).

In both cases Windows XP SP2 is involved. At the ETH Windows is German,
while I use an English version of Windows. Of course, the ETH installation
has a volume licence, i have a personal licence. I have noticed that files
on both installations have very diverse time stamps (dispatch.dll:
   2005-01-25 15:41; pagesize.cfg: 2003-12-12 05:30 at the ETH and 06:30 at my
installation) - but size and contents of these files is the same in both
   installations).

I have compared the (binary) contents of _all_ files (except the registry
entries) with my personal installation of the same FM version. Only the
contents of two files is different, but imho this has nothing to do with the
   problem.

maker.ini have a different numbering of the filter entries:

   installed

wincmds.cfg have different definitions for the PgUp and PgDn commands

(In my installation I have re-establish behaviour of FM 7.0):

   to Modify GotoNextPageKeySequence/PgDn

   from Modify GotoPreviousScreen KeySequence/PgUp

Double-clicking *.fm file in dir no longer opens file

2006-08-28 Thread pearlrosenberg
Hi Framers,

FrameMaker 7.0p576
Windows XP Professional

I recently reinstalled FrameMaker, and now when I double-click a
FrameMaker file in the directory, instead of the file opening in FM, I
get a series of messages similar to the following.

Trying to open – c:\RFI_RFP\Proposal Support Materials\Online Help
VGA.fm

1. Unable to find c:\RFI_RFP\Proposal
2. Unable to find c:\RFI_RFP\Proposal Support Materials\Support
3. Unable to find c:\RFI_RFP\Proposal Support Materials\Online
4. Unable to find c:\RFI_RFP\Proposal Support Materials\Help
5. Unable to find c:\RFI_RFP\Proposal Support Materials\VGA.fm

Can anyone tell me what's going on, and more importantly, how to fix
it?

Thanks for any wisdom you may impart.

OTWindows on a Mac

2006-08-28 Thread jopakent
I have a friend who has a Mac-based DTP biz and occasionally has a need to read
a PC file. I see a bit of patter from time to time here indicating that folks
are running Windows on Macs so this list occurred to me as a potential resource
in helping her out. They are using some kind of software to run Windows XP on
one of their Macs and just recently when they get this message when they try to
fire up Windows:

NTLDR: Fatal Error 2592 reading BOOT.INI

I suggested that if I got something like this on a PC that I'd put in a boot
disk suspecting a bad boot sector on the hard drive. She said she could try
putting in the installattion CD, but I'm guessing that won't do the trick.

I asked her for additional information (see below), but perhaps I should have
asked for more. Here's what I asked for:

~ What version of the Mac OS are you running?

~ What version of the Windows OS are you running?

~ What is the name of the software solution that you are running
that allows you to run the Windows OS on a Mac?

Thanks in advance for whatever assistance you can provide or additional
questions I might need to answer before I'll be likely to get her on the right
track.

Public Domain Templates for FrameMaker Docs

2006-08-28 Thread Steve Cavanaugh

Hi everyone. I'm a brand new FrameMaker user here, and I've been hired to
produce a Component Maintenance Manual to ATA Spec-100, to which I am also
new. EGAD! It raises the question in my mind - are there any repositories
of public domain templates for industry standard type documents such as Spec
100? I'm certain that with a bit of study, I'll be able to produce one, but
if I had one to model from, and learn from, it would decrease the learning
curve considerably. Anyone know of such a repository, or even where I might
find a set of stand alone templates for ATA Spec 100?

By the way, this looks like a very useful list - I've already learned
several things in just the last two weeks.

After four years of operation, my Dell monitor, Model D1626HT just
went
south. So if I may, I'd like to solicit your thoughts on a high

20 monitor that won't bankrupt my resources. Are today's LCD monitors
in the $350-$500 price range up to the task, or does one have to spend
over $1000 for equivalent results?

Nearly every design geek I know is buying Dell LCDs. I have two -- a
20 square and a 24 widescreen -- and they are amazing.

As you price shop make sure you check cheap stingy bargains for
current Dell coupons. You can get a LOT of money off a dell monitor
with a coupon (and often free shipping). For example, the 20
widescreen is $391 right now. The 24 widescreen is $703.

Bibliographic software for FM?

Endnote used to process mif, but it appears that this is no longer the case. I
have not it tested though.

So, will the word processing documents be compiled once they are written?
Perhaps your writers can use Cite As You Write in Word and then have those
documents brought into FM when done. That way all the reference lists will be
complete and the citations will be correctly matched. It may be useful to
consider linking the documents so that any further changes can be updated. All
you need to ensure then is that they follow the rules of formatting (something
that seems to be very difficult to enforce with users of MSW, I've found).

Hello,

Greetings from India.

I have few FM queries related to automating some of the documentation tasks:

1. Is there any option available to generate pdf s using a script on a
Unix machine without opening the Framemaker?

2. During conversion I would like the script to check for other tasks
as well like missing hyperlinks, cross-references etc. My query is what
other items should be included in the checklist to ensure the document
quality?

3. What are the options of resizing a large image without compromising
on the quality? The scaling option messes up the resolution.

4. How does one enable the add comments option in the PDF?

Your responses will help me create quality document.

A no-brainer yes, but the other way round. A 19" all too often only has
1280x1024 resolution. A 20" non-widescreen has 1600x1200 and will allow
you to display a full page (A4) at a reasonable zoom percentage.
For document editing, a 20" widescreen (1680x1050) isn't the best
choice: fewer vertical pixels means you're scrolling more.

This is a good point, although the cost of 20 inch monitors is dropping. I
have two 19 inch monitors side-by-side and it is great. One is an HP that
came with my computer; the other is a Sceptre that I bought at Sams Club.

Commenting in Reader is available only on files created using Acrobat 7.
If you are in another version of Acrobat (Acro5/6), there is nothing

need the Standard version -- I don't remember for sure, and have no way

Quieries related to Frame maker

2006-08-28 Thread Ridder, Fred
Just to clarify a couple of points:

PDFs created with pre-7.0 versions of Acrobat can be re-saved
from Acrobat 7.0 Professional with the Enable for Commenting...
feature turned on. But it is correct that only files that have been
saved from Acrobat 7.0 Professional can be annotated from
Adobe Reader 7.0 (the free reader), and only if the feature is
specifically enabled in a separate post-creation step. There is
no way I am aware of to create a commentable PDF directly;
enabling the commenting feature is a post-production operation
that is equivalent to a Save As.

Second, *all* full versions of Acrobat include an enhanced reader
tool that allows users to add notes and markup to PDFs. But the
only version of the free reader that can be used to add notes is
Adobe Reader 7.0, and only if the feature is added to the specific
PDF file by Acrobat 7.0 Professional.

My opinions only; I don't speak for Intel.

I know that it's possible, but I've no idea how. The documentation that
comes with FrameMaker for Unix should be able to tell you more.

If I remember correctly, all issues need to be resolved beforehand, or
Frame won't generate a PDF. So you must be able to do 'Update Book'
without getting any error messages before starting the script.

Quieries related to Frame maker

I'm getting my pricing info from the Sunday paper, which lists all the
big sales at the local electronics retailers. You can find 19 inch
monitors at a number of stores for under $200. Some of them even have
both analog and DVI inputs.

Monitor issue

2006-08-28 Thread Fred Ridder
I don't know where you're getting your pricing information, Doug,
but it's kind of off-base, or maybe just out of date since the "sweet
spot" in the price curve keeps moving up. If you check the monitor
lineup at Dell, which includes a range of NEC, ViewSonic, and Planar
models as well as Dell-branded units. Price ranges are:
15" DVI, $200-250
  analog, $170-200
17" DVI, $240-350 (Dell on sale at 204)
  analog $200-225
19" DVI, $240-420 (Dell at 310);
analog $240-300 (Dell on sale at 203)
20" DVI, $280-1100 (Dell on sale at 415)
20" widescreen Dell $460 (on sale at 390)
24" widescreen Dell $880
30" widescreen Dell $1900

Yes, it is *possible* to buy an very expensive 20" monitor
that costs more than three cheap 19" models, but the
realistic savings for dropping an inch from 20" to 19" is
about $100 or roughly 25%, which is about the same
differential percentage as for each step smaller than 19".
So I'd say that the sweet spot is currently shifting from
19" to 20", and the sale price on the 20" widescreen
Dell is pretty sweet, too.

My opinions only; I don't speak for Intel.

Only the
contents of two files is different, but imho this has nothing to do with the
   problem.

Monitor issue

2006-08-28 Thread Grant Hogarth
Cast an eye on the Costco.com website -- they carry a number of
highly-rated monitors, often at significant discounts (all are
brand-name, but have a costco/oem specific SKU/model#)

Hi Framers,

After four years of operation, my Dell monitor, Model D1626HT just went
south. So if I may, I'd like to solicit your thoughts on a high quality
20" monitor that won't bankrupt my resources. Are today's LCD monitors
in the $350-$500 price range up to the task, or does one have to spend
over $1000 for equivalent results?

I do a great deal of work in Photoshop and of course FrameMaker, using
WinXP Pro, SP2.

Many thanks in advance,
George

Double-clicking *.fm file in dir no longer opens file

2006-08-28 Thread pearlrosenb...@nc.rr.com
Hi Framers,

FrameMaker 7.0p576
Windows XP Professional

I recently reinstalled FrameMaker, and now when I double-click a
FrameMaker file in the directory, instead of the file opening in FM, I
get a series of messages similar to the following.

Trying to open ? c:\RFI_RFP\Proposal Support Materials\Online Help
VGA.fm

1. Unable to find c:\RFI_RFP\Proposal
2. Unable to find c:\RFI_RFP\Proposal Support Materials\Support
3. Unable to find c:\RFI_RFP\Proposal Support Materials\Online
4. Unable to find c:\RFI_RFP\Proposal Support Materials\Help
5. Unable to find c:\RFI_RFP\Proposal Support Materials\VGA.fm

Can anyone tell me what's going on, and more importantly, how to fix
it?

Thanks for any wisdom you may impart.

Windows on a Mac

2006-08-28 Thread jopak...@comcast.net

For example, the 20"
widescreen is $391 right now. The 24" widescreen is $703.

Public Domain Templates for FrameMaker Docs

2006-08-28 Thread Steve Cavanaugh
Thanks John. Since I live near Seattle, I'm not sure I could enjoy all the
benefits of that organization. But on the other hand, it might be a useful
place to learn. I appreciate the pointer.
