RE: publishing problems for Kazakh

2008-05-30 Thread Anneke von den Hoff
Hi Art,

Thank you for your response to my message.
I have installed the font on all locations I could think of, and the Acrobat
set-up knows all of them.
(I always assumed that when my software knows the font, the printer does
also)

But the character still don't print.
The funny thing is that it is just only 1 character from the font that is
resulting in a blanc.
All other typical Kazakh characters from the font are printed. It is as if the
printer cannot access this character in the font, that it is in an illegal
position (if this is at least possible??).
I am really puzzeled here.

Best regards
Anneke

It could be a font file error, but it sounds to me as if Acrobat may
not have access to the same fonts that FM does.
In your Acrobat set up, there's a font location item. Make sure that
all font directories. Also, make sure that Acrobat is set as the
system's default printer, to eliminate the possiblity that
printer-specific fonts are being invoked.

Kazakh uses some extended cyrillic characters not supported by Arial CYR.

I use PragmaticaI to publish Kazakh, and in FrameMaker it works fine (I must

But when I print this document to printer or to file (PDF) two charactes (Қ

Now I have no idea what causes this, and more important how to solve this.

Is there anyoune who has some experience with this?

Is my font not correct? Does anyone know about another font?

 Thanks in advance!

unresolved x-ref to a heading in a text inset

2008-05-30 Thread Andersen, Verner Engell VEA
Hello

2 different manuals use the same text inset and each of them have an
x-ref to the same heading in the text inset.

Whenever I open one manual and solve the unresolved x-ref, the other

How do you suggest that I solve this?

Re: Basic question- Visio to Frame

2008-05-30 Thread Bodvar Bjorgvinsson
The OLE linking of Visio files has worked well for me.
I have tried PDF-ing the Visio and EPS-ing that in Acrobat. It
sometimes works and sometimes crashes FM, like a couple of days since.
I then saved the Visio as AutoCad and opened that in Illustrator, made
some changes and EPS-ed that. No crash now on this graphic.

The downside of the OLE linking is that FM will pause paging when it
hits the link and while loading the graphic, which can be a bit
annoying.

 problems.

If I were you, I'd print to a PDF from Visio or SaveAs a graphic
format from Visio and import the resulting file as a referenced file.

I think if you check the archives, you'll find as much or more criticism
 of using OLE as acceptance.

As for saving Visio drawings in a graphic format, the problem in the
past has been that most of Visio's export filters (including WMF and
EPS) weren't very good (I don't know if that's changed in Visio 2007).
Also, many people unwisely save those nice scalable vector graphics in a
 raster (bitmap) format like PNG.

I've been using a Visio PDF FM process for some time and strongly
recommend it. If you have a recent full version of Acrobat (6-8, I
believe) and it was installed after Visio (2000-2007, I believe), you'll
have PDFMaker available in Visio, just like in Word, and making PDFs is
a one-click procedure. Multi-page Visio files turn into multi-page PDFs.

In FM, import the PDF by reference (select the page you want, if
necessary). When you edit the Visio file, just click the PDF button, and
let the path/name default to the one you used the last time you did
this. The next time you open the FM doc, you'll see the new version.

Re: Basic question- Visio to Frame

2008-05-30 Thread Rene Stephenson
We deliver mostly PDFs, and the majority of our customers work from printed
(via laser printer, not press) PDFs, not the electronic file. We only use Visio
for flowcharts and schematic diagrams -- just the simple line stuff. Almost
all of our technical drawings are sourced in CorelDRAW 12, and somehow the way
FM
handles the imported hi-res TIF, the resized graphics in FM don't seem to lose
anything detectable. We originally tried to use EPS, but we had so many
problems trying to get the EPS exported from Visio or from DRAW that our team
began using TIF, because it seemed to be the only export filter that was
working rather reliably and importing rather reliably no matter where we
sourced (in DRAW, Visio, AI, CPT, FullShot, SnagIt, etc.) or used the graphic
(typically in FM, but often output via WWP or PDF, and sometimes sourced in
Word or DRAW).

But, we aren't sending the books to a professional press operation. This may be
why we can get away with doing it this way. I'll definitely recheck some of
the Visio drawings in the end-user PDF, though.

We use several graphics management plugins to handle bulk resize, shrinkwrap,
or scale operations, so it gets problematic if we have a ton of white space
around a graphic. One thing we like about TIF over PDF is that we don't have a
lot of white space to hide with the anchored frame, so the shrinkwrap or scale
bulk operations don't hose up the pagination.

Of course, I solicit best practice information from all parties on this list,
so please don't hesitate to tell me where we're screwing up. ;-)

If you're delivering only printed docs and use a sufficiently high
resolution for your TIFFs, it may work OK. But if you deliver PDFs, you
might want to check the diagrams in the PDFs at some
higher-magnification zoom settings.

I don't think you are, Rene, you've found what works for you and gone with it.
Folks are correct in principle in saying that a vector graphics format such as
.eps is preferable for line art, and that dumping to PDF and importing that
into FrameMaker can often avoid a lot of problems. However, a large
high-resolution TIFF scaled down on import may well give you the graphics
quality you require. The acid test is, as Richard Combs commented, to look at
the final PDF of a sample graphic under high magnification. As you mention
SnagIt, I would also say that TIFF is our preferred format for screen grabs.

I can echo the various reports about the poor quality of output from the
various filters that come with Visio from personal experience. In the past we
have had to resort to extensive retouching (in Illustrator) of Visio .eps and
.wmf files: typical problems included arcs and circles that had been
interpreted as multiple straight-line segments, objects moving their locations
and general lack of precision of placement, as if the format translation had
been done with insufficient mathematical precision. Some stuff coming out of
Visio was really bad, but the native Visio diagrams looked fine.

XP Service Patch 3 prevents referencing Visios in Frame 7.2

2008-05-30 Thread Fausset, Marilyn
I don't know if this has been answered, but I just lost lots of time
until Adobe support told me about this (on my second call to them). With
XP Service Patch 3, you cannot save Frame files with updated referenced
Visios. You get a backup file with the Visio grayed out and the message:
An internal error occurred while writing imported graphics in this
document. The file has been saved, but has lost some image data. Please
report this error to Adobe Technical support.

You can uninstall XP SP3 from the Control Panel if you check the Updates
option to display it. I hope this saves somebody some time.

It's the other way around.

What Art was warning you about is that some printer drivers will report
to your PC the fonts that are installed on the physical printer, and the
PC will treat those fonts as if they are installed on the PC -- except
of course, such fonts cannot be embedded in a PDF. Setting Acrobat as
your default printer eliminates the possibility of problems from that
source.

If you want to have a physical printer as your default in programs other
than Framemaker, I recommend the Setprint plug-in from Sundorne:

Running Header in a Continued File?

2008-05-30 Thread Pat Fortino
Hi,

Unfortunately, I can't search the archives, but I'm sure this question has been
answered.

I am using fm 8.x windows xp:

I
have a chapter that is split into two files to allow for landscape
pages that occur later. I am using a running header to capture the
chapter title and display it in the header. Of course, it works fine in
the first file because it contains the chapter title p tag. But in the
second file, the running header does not work. I assumed this would
work like numbering and frame would look for the last occurrence of
that tag and use it, but it doesn't.

Is there any automatic way
to do this; eg, split a chapter into multiple files and have automatic
running headers that display the chapter p tag? Otherwise, I will have
to manually enter the running header in this chapter and several others
which use the same configuration. Seems like a clunky solution :(

BTW:
What happened to the framer's web site? I cannot search through the
thousands of answers that I know are available somewhere. Also, why are
we still using a list serve when a forum would be a lot more user
friendly and search-able? Again, I'm sure this has been discussed too,
but I can't search the archives. Or can I?

Thanks

I'd create a variable to hold the chapter title string and then invoke

RE: unresolved x-ref to a heading in a text inset

2008-05-30 Thread Tammy Van Boening
Verner,

Cross-references with text insets are tricky. X-refs to text insets
require that the container file be specified for the inset. Since the
inset is in two different manuals (Manual A and Manual B), when you set
a reference to the inset in Manual A, then Manual A's file name and
location become part of that x-reference, so that's why the x-ref
becomes unresolved for Manual B. Conversely, when you set a reference to
the inset in Manual B, then Manual B's file name and location become
part of that x-reference, so that's why the x-ref becomes unresolved for
Manual A. There are a variety of ways to solve this (framescript,
manually making two x-refs with conditional text, etc.) but the most
consistent and easiest way is NOT to have headings in insets. Keep the
headings in the container file and import the inset less the heading.
This way, you can set up x-refs to headings to two different manuals as
you would always in FM and not have this problem.

Let me know if you need any more help.

Is there a quick switch from structure to non-structure?

2008-05-30 Thread Harold Winberg
Hello Framers

I have a question. I will try to make it simple. As usual, we are in a
mess again.

We have a book that is mix of structure and non-structure (Don't ask
why). We want to generate an index but the mix gives us a problem
generating. I get a message that it can't open x file because it is
structure and then fails to generate.

We have made a copy of the book so as not to ruin the original.

OUESTION:

Is there a simple way to pull the structure out of the whole book?

I think that would leave the old tags and let us generate the index
normally.

Thanks

Les

Just switch FM to structured mode. You can leave the structured stuff

When I generate a book, I manually open all of the files first.

Maybe that will help in this situation.
(Although I haven't generated a book with both structured and

Help for Tracking Api Client warning dialog on FM 8 launch

2008-05-30 Thread Valerie Lipow
When launching Framemaker, a message dialog with the following content
displays:

Uninstalled copy of the Tracking Api Client! Please install it before using.
[OK]

I have searched the Web and the Adobe forum and support sites to find what
plug-in this refers to. I can't find anything I can recognize in maker.ini
to change.

The message when closed on OK has no effect I'm aware of in using Frame.
Still, the behavior is annoying, and I'd like to resolve it.

If someone knows what this refers to, please advise. Thanks!

Question about colors for the numbering of a paragraph ...

2008-05-30 Thread Syed.Hosain
Using FM 8 on a Windows system.

Can the color of the auto-numbering text be different from the color of
the text in the body of the paragraph?

Clearly, I want this to be part of the paragraph design in the catalog,
so that whenever I apply that format onto a given paragraph of text, the
auto-number text is put in automatically (that is normally what happens)
... but in a different color (can't seem to see a setting for this)!

The key to formatting an autonumber string (whether numerical or text)
differently than the rest of the paragraph is to define a character style
that you include as part of the autonumber definition. To change just
the color, make sure that all characteristics of the style are defined to
be As Is (or empty list boxes) except for the color; the Command menu
in the Character Designer has a handy set all to As Is command that
you can use before setting the one property to be changed.

publishing problems for Kazakh

Basic question- Visio to Frame

2008-05-30 Thread Bodvar Bjorgvinsson
The OLE linking of Visio files has worked well for me.
I have tried PDF-ing the Visio and EPS-ing that in Acrobat. It
sometimes works and sometimes crashes FM, like a couple of days since.
I then saved the Visio as AutoCad and opened that in Illustrator, made
some changes and EPS-ed that. No crash now on this graphic.

The downside of the OLE linking is that FM will pause paging when it
hits the link and while loading the graphic, which can be a bit
annoying.

Basic question- Visio to Frame

This may be
why we can "get away with" doing it this way.

Of course, I solicit "best practice" information from all parties on this list,
so please don't hesitate to tell me where we're screwing up.

"An internal error occurred while writing imported graphics in this
document. The file has been saved, but has lost some image data. Please
report this error to Adobe Technical support."

You can uninstall XP SP3 from the Control Panel if you check the Updates
option to display it. I hope this saves somebody some time.

Anyone contemplating installing XP SP3 should also know that there can
be severe conflicts between that service pack and several antivirus
programs, notably Norton/Symantec. Check your AV software
manufacturer's Web site for advisories, and proceed with caution.

XP Service Patch 3 prevents referencing Visios in Frame 7.2

2008-05-30 Thread syed.hos...@aeris.net
I had serious difficulties with XP SP3 and PC Tools Spyware Doctor -
*after* they (PC Tools) sent me an upgrade to work with XP SP3! My
computer became impossibly slow - keystrokes took *many* seconds
(sometimes minutes) to show on the screen if you to switched between
different apps or windows.

Didn't have time to debug the issue, so, after a few hours of trying to
fix the problem, I removed Spyware Doctor for now ... luckily
BitDefender Anti-virus is working without problems.

You could use a utility plugin such as CleanImport to impose a new
template (with the correct ref pages).
And you can use it in a book, if you want to create a book or books to
manage the files.

And you could probably do it with a FrameScript too.

Our IT staff say there are lots of other incompatiblities in SP3 with
older software and that they are not going for it until it has been
out for approx. a full year. (I hate to say this, but it seems a lot
like with FM 8, as predicted by so many in June last year. Sorry,
Adobe, sad but true, I'm afraid.)

Or can I?

Thanks

I'd create a variable to hold the chapter title string and then invoke
that in both the Chapter Title p-tag and the header.

unresolved x-ref to a heading in a text inset

Hello

2 different manuals use the same text inset and each of them have an
x-ref to the same heading in the text inset.

Whenever I open one manual and solve the unresolved x-ref, the other
manual will get an unresolved x-ref to that heading.

How do you suggest that I solve this?

Another approach that might work for you is to make the
landscape pages the default left/right master pages and the
handful of portrait pages be the manually-assigned non-default
cases. Once this is set up, the only time you'd have to futz
with it is if the number of introductory portrait pages changes;
the number of landscape pages can expand or contract as
necessary with no further attention because they use the default.

Is there a quick switch from structure to non-structure?

Hello Framers

I have a question. I will try to make it simple. As usual, we are in a

I think that would leave the old tags and let us generate the index
normally.

Just switch FM to structured mode. You can leave the structured stuff
alone, and the unstructured stuff will peacefully coexist.

Hi Les,

When I generate a book, I manually open all of the files first.
(Shift-File > Open All Files in Book)
Maybe that will help in this situation.
(Although I haven't generated a book with both structured and
non-structured files yet.)

Thanks,

2008-05-30 Thread syed.hos...@aeris.net
Using FM 8 on a Windows system.

Can the color of the auto-numbering text be different from the color of
the text in the body of the paragraph?

Clearly, I want this to be part of the paragraph design in the catalog,
so that whenever I apply that format onto a given paragraph of text, the
auto-number text is put in automatically (that is normally what happens)
... but in a different color (can't seem to see a setting for this)!

Thanks!

Running Header in a Continued File?

2008-05-30 Thread Pat Fortino
Hi Fred,

Thanks for the reply. The reason I am splitting the chapters is that our
chapters start out as portrait for several pages and then go to landscape.
Because I don't know when the break will be, I want to use automatic left/right
pages to assign the landscape pages which go on for 40 some pages.

I guess any way I do it, it will require manual intervention to make it work.

I think the $volnum variable as text might solve the problem.

In addition to the other replies, which suggested the use of a
variable for the chapter title and addressed the archive issue,
I wanted to add a couple of points.

First, there is no need to split a chapter into two to accommodate
a combination of portrait and landscape pages. (I think that notion
is a carry-over from MS Word, where you do indeed need to use
section breaks to change page layout.) In FrameMaker you just
define an additional pair of master pages for the landscape layout
and then assign those master pages (either manually or by mapping
them to certain paragraph styles) to the appropriate pages.

Second, if you are not already using them, you can use the
$chapnum and/or $volnum system variables to be able to define
the chapter titles from the book file. All you would need to do is
enter the appropriate text string as the "number" format in the
book's Numbering properties sheet.
