RE: Mif2Go graphics question
Hi Jeremy, Running the copy command from the command prompt works. So how do I avoid having to run the commands from the command line every time I regenerate the online help? Getting rid of the plus sign in the directory path doesn't solve the problem as to why the graphics aren't being automatically copied to the wrap directory. Thanks. The CopyGraphics directory is on the C:\rep\documentation\trunk\MEMSplus. But if I change the wrap directory to some other name, it doesn't solve my problem. No, I wouldn't expect it to, since they are different actual locations. Changing the StripGraphPath to Yes still doesn't get my graphics into the wrap directory. That was so that the HTML files could see them if they were there. If the original path were preserved, they would be looking elsewhere. This is driving me nuts. Any other suggestions? The next thing I'd do to diagnose is open a Command Prompt window, enter the commands we use by hand, and see if any problem appears: cd C:\rep\documentation\trunk\MEMS+OmniHelp\MEMSplus copy /Y C:\rep\documentation\trunk\MEMSplus\*.jpg copy /Y C:\rep\documentation\trunk\MEMSplus\*.gif See if the files are really copied this time. Filepaths (was Re: Mif2Go graphics question)
Never, really? Only letters and digits? Since I started in the Unix world (oh so long ago), I personally hate the use of spaces in file names and directory paths, but have always used an underscore in its place if really necessary to help clarify the name. Extra periods also can be used, it just looks awkward to my eyes. The plus symbol is very dangerous as you point out, and although legal I don't like using a minus (hyphen) either (as it looks too much like the unix command/param switch to me). Quotes and apostrophes are a disaster IMO as well. Just my $0.02 – Les Smalley --- On Thu, 9/10/09, Jeremy H. Creating paragraph style with colored bar bearing a graphic
Hello, first post ever I have been using Framemaker for about six or seven years, primarily within the context of a manual document template created long ago. I have forgotten how we made a particular paragraph style and need to make some more like it. This style is used for cautions and warnings in technical manuals pertaining to industrial machinery. The current ones have a colored bar running full column width, and the bar displays a graphic symbol [triangle including an exclamation point] and the word, warning or caution. Below that bar is where your entered text will appear; the specifics of your warning or caution. To be in compliance with some international styles of safety information, I need to make some more, perhaps with different symbols and certainly different words. I can't for the life of me figure out how these are constructed. Can someone here tell me how to do this? I would be happy to email some examples to someone if that was helpful or necessary. Help: File gone berserk
I'm hoping someone can help me out here. I attempted to create a PDF yesterday of a book that I've created numerous times before. For some unknown reason I received an error message in the log indicating that a certain font was not available. I occasionally get this message but I ignore it, because I have no idea why Frame thinks I'm using a font it doesn't have. It's never stopped a PDF from being created, until yesterday. Frame simply refused to create the PDF. I have no idea what's wrong with the file (it's the cover). The only font used is Arial. There are no other fonts in the file. I even did a Select All and reapplied Arial just in case, but to no avail. Has anyone ever had this problem before? Is there some way to search Frame files for a specific font in order to change it? RE: can a chapter in a book be set to conditional?
I have produced 2 books from one using conditional text for UK and US spelling and metric units and those parts of the text that are different. The forewords are different, and here whole pages are conditional. If you have the appendix in a different file, you could just make that whole text conditional, and in the book where the appendix is not needed, you would just be adding an extra blank page when all the conditional text is hidden (or insert a conditional picture on this page if you don't want it blank). I much prefer to have only one book, since most of the updates are needed in both language versions. What I have done until now for the 3 products is that I changed the variables and the conditional text settings to produce the specific manual. The cover pages are added to the pdf file, they are done in a different program, so no advantage here for working with three books. Re: PS vs Save as PDF
SaveAs uses hidden job settings that differ from the standard Distiller job settings and for many people don't work as well -- it just tends to be more problematic to produce consistent results. How well it works varies a lot depending on your FM and Acrobat versions, and whether you use the limited Distiller instance shipped with Frame or the full version. Saving as a PS file and then distilling keeps the entire production inside Acrobat itself where it's more easily controlled -- there are no hidden settings. That said, there's no reason to do a two-step PS-then-distill process when you can just Print to the Adobe PDF printer instance, which produces the PS file and distills it in one step. RE: Remote Desktop and FrameMaker
I regularly use Frame remotely from various platforms with decent results. Application-wise it is pretty solid. Mostly, I use it over a local area network or across two centrally located LANs with one switch between them. How many 'hops' you have in between your desktop and remote machine, chapter size, how fast you scroll through your book, can play a big factor as well. I have used Frame 7 and 8 running on Windows and Frame 8 running on Solaris (remote machine) by way of Windows Remote Desktop and rdesktop (Linux) (local or 'desktop' machine) The only thing I have noticed is that the copy or ctrl+C command does not always buffer consistently between the remote and the desktop machine (Linux). I would use this for instance if I have some source material on the desktop I want to paste into my FrameMaker doc open on the remote machine. I've also noticed that hex key codes don't work when trying to type special characters using the number pad. Normal shortcuts that use the qwerty characters work seamlessly. This might work if you use Windows Remote Desktop from a Windows machine rather than the rdesktop Linux variant. If you have a good Network connection, which I do, that also helps things along. The Solaris machine I use is a bit dated, and I use it mainly for doc build and check in using FrameScript. But rdesktop-ing to it works as far as I have seen. There are several people who produce custom scripts on the list, and you can find more in the FrameScript group on Yahoo. My preference has always been to work with Rick Quattro at frameexpert.com. I don't think that's a complicated script, so I doubt the cost would be high, but you're paying for the programmer's time and expertise -- I'd guesstimate $175 +/- $50. Re: PS vs Save as PDF
What are the advantages/disadvantages of making a PS file and distilling it to a PDF vs the Save as PDF option? Thanks. If you read this board regularly, you'll see that almost all problems relating to PDF production result from using Save as PDF. Just avoid it. Instead, print to the Adobe PDF virtual printer. It always works and does the same thing as creating a PS file and then manually distilling it-- all in one step. There is one time, however, that you might want to print to PS, and that's if you create watched folders in Acrobat. These are folders that Acrobat monitors. When a PS file appears in them, Acrobat automatically distills the file. The cool thing is that you can set up multiple watched folders, and assign one of Acrobat's .joboptions settings files to each. So when you create a PS file in that folder, it will be distilled with the particular joboptions set for the folder. If you find yourself needing to change the joboptions settings regularly, it can useful. Mike Wickham ___ You are currently subscribed to Framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. Re: PS vs Save as PDF
That's true, but the OP was comparing PSDistill to SaveAs. No mention of watched folders. Because SaveAs also wouldn't be used in a watched folder workflow, I assumed that watched folders weren't involved and so didn't go down that path. Art Campbell art.campb...@gmail.com ... Thanks for any help! Lea Galanter Lea, The only font *visible* is Arial, but FM may have other font names saved in the file on reference pages or in table tag definitions. The fact that the message is intermittent suggests that between sessions your default printer has changed (perhaps from a physical printer to AdobePDF or vice versa). When a physical printer is the default, it reports its resident fonts to the OS, which then falsely informs applications that those fonts are actually installed on the PC. When the default printer changes, poof -- those fonts are gone. The SetPrint plug-in from http://www.sundorne.com/FrameMaker/Freeware/setPrint.htm eliminates that problem. FM is punishing you for ignoring that missing font message for so long. ;-) Seriously, if the font's not being used (for instance, it exists only in a catalog definition or on a reference page), it shouldn't prevent Distiller from creating the PDF. Does the file contain an imported graphic that might contain the font? Further diagnosis would require further information. In general, it helps if you provide specifics like the OS, the FM version, the process you were using to PDF, the point in the process when it failed and the exact error message, the name of the missing font, etc. Here's the easiest way to get rid of missing font messages -- if they're not coming from imported graphics or text insets, and you're really, really sure the font shouldn't be there: Close the file with the missing font. Go to File Preferences General. Clear the Remember Missing Font Names check box and click Set. Reopen the file with the missing font. You'll get a slightly different missing font message because this time you're being asked if it's OK to replace the font permanently. Accept, save the file, and the font is gone. If you care about what it's replaced with, you'll need to learn about font mappings in the maker.ini file. HTH! Richard Richard G. Mif2Go graphics question
Thanks. If not, the path is wrong. But I suspect they will be copied. When we do the copy, we add one more part, the destination path, to each copy: C:\rep\documentation\trunk\MEMS+OmniHelp\MEMSplus Why would that be a problem? Because "+" has a meaning to the copy command, and will make the whole line mean something else. Filepaths (was Re: Mif2Go graphics question)
Never, really?? Only letters and digits?? Since I started in the Unix world (oh so long ago), I personally hate the use of spaces in file names and directory paths, but have always used an underscore in its place if really necessary to help clarify the name.? Extra periods also can be used, it just looks awkward to my eyes. The plus symbol is very dangerous as you point out, and although legal I don't like using a minus (hyphen) either (as it looks too much like the unix command/param switch to me).? Quotes and apostrophes are a disaster IMO as well. Just my $0.02? ? Les Smalley --- On Thu, 9/10/09, Jeremy H. PS vs Save as PDF
Help: File gone berserk
You could save the file in question as a .mif file and open it a text editor and then search for the exact name of the font that is causing problems. I've used this trick many times. Cost of a basic FrameScript script
Hi all, I'd like to have a script for importing graphics that are automatically defined as: . shrink wrapped. under current line. left aligned. 1.5 cm from left margin Who should I ask for having such script developed (if using a FrameScript for doing that is the best solution of course)? Remote Desktop and FrameMaker
Creating paragraph style with colored bar bearing a graphic

Below that bar is where your entered text will appear; the > specifics of your warning or caution. With the cursor in such a pgf, go to the Paragraph Designer Advanced tab. More than likely, you'll see that Frame Above Pgf is set to something other than None. That something is a graphics frame on a reference page. Select View > Reference Pages, and you'll find the frame containing the colored bar, triangle, and word. If you check the frame's properties, you'll see it has the name that Frame Above Pgf was set to. For each similar format you want, create a new graphics frame on the ref page, give it an appropriate name, and add the content (or copy/paste from the existing one). The word is probably done as a Text Line. HTH! Richard Richard G. Combs Senior Technical Writer Polycom, Inc. richardDOTcombs AT polycomDOTcom 303-223-5111 -- rgcombs AT gmailDOTcom 303-777-0436 --
Cost of a basic FrameScript script
There are several people who produce custom scripts on the list, and you can find more in the FrameScript group on Yahoo. My preference has always been to work with Rick Quattro at frameexpert.com. I don't think that's a complicated script, so I doubt the cost would be high, but you're paying for the programmer's time and expertise -- I'd guesstimate $175 +/- $50. However, I'd look at the ImpGraph plug in to see if that meets your needs before you dive into script land. Cheaper and ready to run. http://home.comcast.net/~bruce.foster/ImpGraph.htm Art Campbell art.campbell at gmail.com "... Go to File > Preferences > General. PS vs Save as PDF
> What are the advantages/disadvantages of making a PS file and distilling > it > to a PDF vs the "Save as PDF" option? Thanks. If you read this board regularly, you'll see that almost all problems relating to PDF production result from using Save as PDF. Just avoid it. Instead, print to the Adobe PDF virtual printer. It always works and does the same thing as creating a PS file and then manually distilling it-- all in one step. There is one time, however, that you might want to print to PS, and that's if you create "watched folders" in Acrobat. Mike Wickham

PS vs Save as PDF
That's true, but the OP was comparing PS>Distill to SaveAs. No mention of watched folders. Because SaveAs also wouldn't be used in a watched folder workflow, I assumed that watched folders weren't involved and so didn't go down that path. Art Campbell art.campbell at gmail.com "... Sorry, but that makes no sense. The same FM file can be included in any number of books. You update that file, and it's updated in all the books in which it's included. The files that are needed in both language versions would be included in both books. (Each book would have its own condition settings.) Conditionalizing an entire FM file (which leaves 2 blank pages for a 2-sided doc with typical pagination settings) strikes me as an ugly kludge, and inserting some random picture(s) doesn't make it much prettier. :-} I don't understand the reluctance to use multiple books. It's really not difficult: you have a UserGuide-US.book and a UserGuide-UK.book. They share most of the same .fm files (but each has its own generated files). They use different conditional text settings and maybe different variable definitions. To produce the UK version: 1) Open UserGuide-UK.book and select all the files in the book window. 2) Go to View > Show/Hide Conditional Text, and click Set to apply the settings you previously set up for that book. 3) If there are variable differences between the books, import the UK book variables from one of the files that's specific to the UK book (like a generated file). 4) Update/generate the book, and you're ready to print/PDF/whatever. This isn't rocket science. If you have only one book, you have to do all the same things listed above -- you just do them twice to the same book. I have to think that that's more error-prone than having a clearly named book for each version, which "remembers" its conditional text settings and stores its variables. IMHO, YMMV, etc. But really, give it a try. :-) Richard Richard G. Combs Senior Technical Writer Polycom, Inc. richardDOTcombs AT polycomDOTcom 303-223-5111 -- rgcombs AT gmailDOTcom 303-777-0436 --

Also, I have found Vista 64-bit to be rock solid, running for weeks on end without reboots; my only reboots being necessary for the monthly "Patch Tuesday" Microsoft OS updates. - Dov > -Original Message- > From: framers-bounces at lists.frameusers.com > [mailto:framers-bounces at lists.frameusers.com] On Behalf Of Reng, Dr. > Winfried > Sent: Wednesday, July 15, 2009 12:28 AM > To: framers at lists.frameusers.com > Subject: RE: Soliciting hardware recommendations > > Hi, > > > If you get an Intel Core 2 Duo (or Core 2 Quad) system, running at > > 2.6GHz or higher, with 4GB of DDR2 RAM and 7200rpm drives (RAID 0 > > might be a bit of overkill but easy enough to do), Windows Vista > > Business 64-bit, and something like an nVidia 9600GT card or better, > > you will have *more* than enough power to run FrameMaker with > > excellent performance. Running FM9 (and TCS2) on 64-bit systems
FrameMaker automatically runs properly in 32-bit mode in Vista 64-bit and Windows 7 64-bit versions. The only reason I changed to Windows 7 32-bit (just yesterday) was because I ran into a few missing driver issues with Windows 7 64-bit ... and the Vista 64-bit versions of those drivers did not work for some reason. But this decision was unrelated to FrameMaker in any way. The occasional problems of being an early adopter ... sigh. Z

Try running the *full* command, with the part containing the plus, and see what happens: [all in one line] copy /Y "C:\rep\documentation\trunk\MEMSplus\*.jpg" C:\rep\documentation\trunk\MEMS+OmniHelp\MEMSplus That is what we run, I'll bet that it does *not* copy the files. If you really remove the plus from the directory name, it will. In the copy command, "+" means to concatenate the file before the plus with the file after the plus. -- Jeremy H. FrameMaker 8 installation files downloadable anywhere?
Hi, all. My old laptop is not functioning and I need to migrate to a new one that is now on my desk. Unfortunately, I cannot find my FrameMaker 8 disks anywhere (although I have the license info printed and saved away luckily) ... is there any place on the Adobe web site that I can use to download the installation file? I can only see the FrameMaker 9 file on their site, but since I am not yet using that ... unfortunately, it will not work. Help! Z

Some UNIX systems will object, and if they turn up in a CHM's TOC you will have problems, but otherwise they are reasonably safe. Personally, I prefer CamelCase; it's harmless in Windows (where file and path names are case-insensitive), and OK in UNIX (which *is* case-sensitive, as in Web names) if you use it consistently. >Extra periods also can be used, it just looks awkward to my eyes. At least that is what they told me in their Indian English accents--twice--that I would be able to download earlier installers of FrameMaker. They said that I would receive emails to that effect--from two different customer support people at Adobe. And I am still waiting... Gary
Help: File gone berserk
Thanks for the suggestion, Scott. I'll do that to get the offending fonts out of my docs. Meanwhile, I discovered that my problem was with my printer, even though I was creating a PDF. I had switched to a different printer (because the "good" printer I normally use was out of service for the day). Apparently, the printer didn't have the "offending" fonts installed, but why that should totally prevent me from creating a PDF is strange. Normally I just receive a font warning but I'm able to create the PDF. I use Frame 8 right now but I wonder if this problem (and I view it as a bug) exists in Frame 9? Help: File gone berserk
Thanks, Richard. Sorry I didn't provide background information. I have a feeling the font causing the problem is in a graphic (which came from the Marketing department, who uses different fonts than the documentation team). In which case, how do I handle that? I'll also use your suggestion about replacing the fonts permanently, because I know I receive an error message occasionally about that with reference to Courier and Courier New, and that's not problem to replace. Is there some way to search > Frame files for a specific font in order to change it? Go to File > Preferences > General.
