Re: Beware the Inadvertent Global Search and Replace

Yes, with FM 7 / 7.2, but luckily without any disaster that I know of,
thank God. I ususally start with Find, and as FM defaults to book, if
the book is open, I sometimes get stuck for a while while FM opens and
closes maybe hundreds of files before I am allowed to do anything.

I would call this a bug, not a feature, because if the default was the
open file, it would oftentimes only take a fraction of the time it
takes for Find or Replace to browse through the whole book. :-( Something
lacking in structuring of the layout of the feature. IMHO, the programmers
seem not to have taken human behaviour sufficiently into consideration.

A very dangerous feature, indeed.

 Argh.

Before I had Frame 9, I had Frame 7, and I used to would Find things thusly:

 1. Press Ctrl-f
 2. Start typing the text to find.
 3. Press Enter.

Now in Frame 9, when I press ctrl-f, the Find/Change pod displays, but the
cursor is rarely waiting there in the text box. In fact, the focus seems
 to be unpredictable.

This has bitten me a few times already. I hit ctrl-f and start typing, and
Frame decides that I meant to do a global search and replace. It might be
that I'm typing c and that activates the Change button. Lucky for me, I've
usually got the Document rather than the Book radio button selected, so it
only makes the change in the current chapter. And I can do a quick Undo
 Replace.

Lucky until today, that is. This time the Book radio button was lit up, and
Frame replaced x with y 27 times across all chapter files. And it opens each
one, makes the changes, and closes it, so there is no Undo. I had to open up
each of 18 chapter files, search for the replace text, evaluate each
occurrence with my actual mind to see if was one of the inadvertent
 replacements, and fix it back.

Anyone else experienced this? Any advice, other than to slow down and to
 rely less on keyboard shortcuts?

RE: Beware the Inadvertent Global Search and Replace

2009-10-15 Thread Corcoran, Susan
This has driven me crazy in FM9! And I never know what process is going
to start, or has already started. It all depends on where the cursor
has decided to place itself.

And as long as we're griping about bugs, yesterday I realized that if
I've applied a character tag, then remove it (return to Default format),
the paragraph tag then displays with an asterisk, indicating an
override. I have to re-apply the paragraph tag to remove the override
indicator. What a pain!

Old styles being picked up

2009-10-15 Thread Nina Rogers
Hi all,

For several years, I was the sole tech writer at my company and was the
only person in my department who used Framemaker. Now we have another
tech writer, for a total of two.

For this year's user guides, I made some changes to the paragraphs and
character styles, cross-reference names, etc. I created a template
document that contained info about all of these new styles and when to
use them-it took quite a bit of work, but we needed it, particularly
since we now had more than one tech writer, and the new tech writer
(unfortunately) cannot read my mind. :)

Anyway, I have no problem with using the new styles on my computer. When
the new tech writer opens my documents on his computer for editing or
proofreading, however, or when he creates a document on his own using
the template, many of the obsolete styles end up finding their way in
his documents.

It is very time consuming for him to have to go through every document
he touches and delete the obsolete styles. Can someone tell me how to
avoid this issue? Thanks!

Maybe I'm reading Nina's original message slightly differently than
others are, but to me it was NOT clear that the old styles have been
purged from the documents, just that new formats were created and
carefully applied to files' content so that the obsolete formats were
not used anywhere. If this is incorrect, then just hit delete now as
the remainder of this doesn't apply.

If my interpretation is correct, that's a huge source for potential
problems and can explain how some of the recent edits by the new writer
have resulted in these obsolete formats reappearing.

The solution, as I see it is to take an existing document (template)
with the desired styles, and be absolutely sure to purge all unwanted
info: formats for paragraphs and character ranges, cross-reference
styles, table definitions, color options, master and reference pages,
etc.

Once you have a true, clean template, then you have a basis to use the
CleanImport utility on the documents, or using only Frame itself, open a
virgin document from the template and cut paste content from a bad
file, reapply the new desired formats as necessary, and then save as the
desired document.

Beware the Inadvertent Global Search and Replace

Thanks!

Beware the Inadvertent Global Search and Replace

2009-10-15 Thread Callie Bertsche
I just had to reply that it's nice to hear from another framer out there who
has had the same trouble with Ctrl-f and typing being misinterpreted by FM 9! I
used to do this habitually in FM 7 to navigate quickly in my huge books. Now
with FM 9, as you said, the focus is unpredictable and it has also bitten me a
couple times!! Most recently I accidentally did a book global "find all note
text and replace with space" with 57 instances accidentally when I only meant
to type a word into the Find text field!! Unfortunately I hadn't checked my
files into source control in a couple days so I had to painstakingly go through
and re-add all of my note text...fortunately I had a built PDF to copy from,
but still took me quite a while and was infuriating. Quite an unfortunate
change of behavior from FM 7!

It's nice to know that someone else out there has shared my frustration. :)

Cheers, Callie

In fact, the "focus" seems to
be unpredictable.

This has bitten me a few times already. I hit ctrl-f and start typing, and
Frame decides that I meant to do a global search and replace. It might be that
I'm typing "c" and that activates the Change button. Lucky for me, I've usually
got the Document rather than the Book radio button selected, so it only makes
the change in the current chapter. And I can do a quick Undo Replace.

Lucky until today, that is. This time the Book radio button was lit up, and
Frame replaced x with y 27 times across all chapter files. And it opens each
one, makes the changes, and closes it, so there is no Undo. I had to open up
each of 18 chapter files, search for the replace text, evaluate each occurrence
with my actual mind to see if was one of the inadvertent replacements, and fix
it back.

Anyone else experienced this? Any advice, other than to slow down and to rely
less on keyboard shortcuts?

Yeah, someone on the TCS Users list (where I cross-posted this) also

Beware the Inadvertent Global Search and Replace

2009-10-15 Thread Jon Harvey
One of the habits I've gotten into is to put some random characters in
the Change field while I'm looking for something, not wanting to do a
global change. For example, if I want to search for each instance of
"dog", I might put "XCLQF%$" in the Change field. That way, if things go
south, I just have to reverse the process, globally search for "XCLQF%$"
and change it back to "dog". To make this work, you have to use a random
string that you KNOW is not in your document anywhere.

Old styles being picked up

2009-10-15 Thread Les Smalley
Maybe I'm reading Nina's original message slightly differently than others are,
but to me it was NOT clear that the old styles have been purged from the
documents, just that new formats were created and carefully applied to files'
content so that the obsolete formats were not used anywhere.? If this is
incorrect, then just hit delete now as the remainder of this doesn't apply.

If my interpretation is correct, that's a huge source for potential problems
and can explain how some of the recent edits by the new writer have resulted in
these "obsolete" formats reappearing.

The solution, as I see it is to take an existing document (template) with the
desired styles, and be absolutely sure to purge all unwanted info: formats for
paragraphs and character ranges, cross-reference styles, table definitions,
color options, master and reference pages, etc.??

Once you have a true, clean template, then you have a basis to use the
CleanImport utility on the documents, or using only Frame itself, open a virgin
document from the template and cut & paste content from a "bad" file, reapply
the new desired formats as necessary, and then save as the desired document.

styles, table definitions, color options, master and reference pages,
etc.

Once you have a true, clean template, then you have a basis to use the
CleanImport utility on the documents, or using only Frame itself, open a
virgin document from the template and cut & paste content from a "bad"
file, reapply the new desired formats as necessary, and then save as the
desired document.

I'll second the recommendation of CleanImport -- a very useful tool,
worth far more than its modest price.

But I don't understand how formats that don't exist in Nina's documents
suddenly appear in those documents when her new associate opens them. Or
where they come from when he creates a document based on a template in
which they don't exist.

I think I'd want to watch very closely as the new writer opens a
document. :-)
