Fm9.0p255: trouble in Unicode paradise
Hi group I'm using Fm9.0p255, Windows XP SP3. I've got Fm files which contain Chinese text (OpenType font: Arial Unicode MS). Everything looks OK, but when I update my Fm book (Edit Update Book) and cross-references, the Chinese characters in cross-references become question marks. I can fix this by doing one of the following: - For each individual Fm file, choose Edit Update References All Cross-references, or - Save, close and reopen all files in my book. This is, of course, only a workaround. I guess this is a bug, right? Has anyone else seen this? Is this bug known to Adobe? Can I ask someone to develop a Framescript and charge Adobe for it? ;-) Cheers -- Yves Barbion www.scripto.nu ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. Re: Fm9.0p255: trouble in Unicode paradise
Yves, From a company we purchased, I inherited FrameMaker 7 files for several languages. I do not have FM7. I went from FM6 to FM9 (TCS2 actually, I am now at FM9.0p255). The European languages I inherited open fine in FM9. Their cross references looked great. But, the Chinese and Japanese versions all had the character's in their cross references get mangled as if FM9 could not find the correct font so it substituted some other font. All text other than the cross references looks great. No font problems at all, except in the cross references. I've not yet found a fix. It has been suggested that I get FM7, that perhaps either a FM9 bug or that the new FM9 Unicode font handling was my problem. But, it seems better to me that I figure out why the Chinese and Japanese cross-reference problems are occurring in FM9. Right now, however, I'm stumped. I am afraid that I am of no help to you, but, I do thank you for posting your work around. I plan to give them a try. Thanks! [OT] Adobe's pricing policy
Hi group Can someone please explain to me why Adobe Acrobat 9 Standard (Full, no update) costs: - US $299 (216 EUR) when I buy it in the US Store http://bit.ly/aXhtLv - US $554 (401 EUR) when I buy it in a European Adobe Store - http://bit.ly/dtOSd3 I called Customer Support in Belgium and the explanation they gave me was that the price in the US is lower because they don't have offer free support. But I don't need support! When I go to the Adobe store, a pop-up appears, telling me that I can have a live text chat with an Adobe Product Specialist to assiste me with my product selection. This is the result: Please hold as we route your chat to an Adobe Representative. Welcome to Adobe.com! My name is Darryl. May I assist you with your selection today? Darryl: Hello, how can I help you? Yves: I'd like to know why Adobe Acrobat 9 Standard costs $299 in the US Store and $554 in the Belgian Adobe Store? What's the reason for this HUGE difference in price? Darryl: We understand your concern. We want to make sure that we are giving our Customers the best products and at the right price. Darryl: Just so you know, there are many factors that decide pricing like 'the cost of doing business in each country' and the 'difference in the perceived value of the product'. Darryl: What are some of the tasks you like to accomplish using the software? Yves: Not relevant here: product is the same, price is different. Why? Re: Fm9.0p255: trouble in Unicode paradise
You're welcome, Richard. I don't think I mentioned Fm7 in my original post, did I? And I don't know who advised you to get Fm7 (and I don't want to know), but that piece of advice just doesn't make any sense at all because: - Fm7 does not support Unicode. - I don't think you can buy Fm7 anymore (or you'd have to search for it really hard). convert inline elements to xrefs
Hi, I have elements like this one falsexref linkend=RE15report 15/falsexref which are defined in the DTD as normal elements. Now, I have been asked to convert them all to native FrameMaker xref elements, (with the correct xref format if possible). As there are hundreds if not thousands of these falsexref elements, I need to find some kind of (semi-)automated approach. I had this same situation on this list some time back. I said this on the list on 18 October, 2009 (http://lists.frameusers.com/pipermail/framers/2009-October/018261.html ) Can anyone explain to me why it is that Adobe charges USD399 for the upgrade of FrameMaker to version 9 for domestic customers but USD515 for the same thing for International customers. There are no shipping costs when it has been downloaded and even if shipping were included I don't see how they can charge USD116 for shipping a small box anyway. No I haven't asked Adobe, who there could possibly tell me. Certainly no one on the helpdesk. There was some discussion of it then. Michael learned a new word then: rort. If Acrobat X is about to ship, can FrameMaker X be far behind? Maybe I should start trying to convince my company that once FM X ships we will have fallen out of the cheap (relatively) upgrade window from FM 7.0. FM 7.0 Locks up on Windows 7
Most of our company is still using Windows XP and FrameMaker 7. The IT group has set up a Windows 7 PC for testing, including FM 7.0, with patch 579. I have been using this setup through a remote desktop connection for some of my unstructured FM documents. All seems well except for seemingly random instances where Framemaker just locks up. I can close FM and restart with no trouble, but it is kind of annoying. Is there a fix for this behavior? Will setting startup compatibility to XP help? Well, darn. I misread the original message and thought you were talking about FrameMaker 10 coming out. I knew about Acrobat X. Good luck getting people to pronounce it as Acrobat 10. I still hear people say OSX instead of OS 10. What a stupid naming idea. You just know some bug will be found which will cause users to say that Acrobat X accidentally deletes files and creates X-files. They're just asking for it. On the other hand, version 30 will probably sell like hotcakes. I hope the next version of FrameMaker stays with Arabic numerals instead of converting to Roman ones. Fm9.0p255: trouble in Unicode paradise
Hi group I'm using Fm9.0p255, Windows XP SP3. I've got Fm files which contain Chinese text (OpenType font: Arial Unicode MS). Everything looks OK, but when I update my Fm book (Edit > Update Book) and cross-references, the Chinese characters in cross-references become question marks. I can fix this by doing one of the following: - For each individual Fm file, choose Edit > Update References > All Cross-references, or - Save, close and reopen all files in my book. This is, of course, only a workaround. I guess this is a bug, right? Has anyone else seen this? Is this bug known to Adobe? Can I ask someone to develop a Framescript and charge Adobe for it? ;-) Cheers -- Yves Barbion www.scripto.nu
Fm9.0p255: trouble in Unicode paradise
Yves, >From a company we purchased, I inherited FrameMaker 7 files for several languages. Thanks! Richard

Fm9.0p255: trouble in Unicode paradise
You're welcome, Richard. I don't think I mentioned Fm7 in my original post, did I? And I don't know who advised you to get Fm7 (and I don't want to know), but that piece of advice just doesn't make any sense at all because: - Fm7 does not support Unicode. - I don't think you can buy Fm7 anymore (or you'd have to search for it really hard). convert inline elements to xrefs
Hi, I have elements like this one report 15 which are defined in the DTD as normal elements. Now, I have been asked to convert them all to native FrameMaker xref elements, (with the correct xref format if possible). As there are hundreds if not thousands of these falsexref elements, I need to find some kind of (semi-)automated approach. Any help is greatly appreciated, Jakob.

off topic: e-drawings, eps files, frame and pdf
I've been slow to acknowledge some great ideas and suggestions. Thanks everybody. Currently grappling with the transition from FM6 on XP to FM9 on Win 7. Open Acrobat 8 Pro 3D or 9 Pro Ext. 2. Open the drawing with e-drawings, move it in the position you like it. 3. Push PRTSC and the graphic from e-drawings will save in Acrobat, you can save it as u3d in PDF. 4. Import this in your FrameMaker file. Other way: 1. Open the Solidworks original file with Acrobat 8 Pro 3D Toolkit, Acrobat 9 Pro Ext. 3D Previewer or Take DEEP EXPLORATION from Right Hemisphere. 2. Now you can reduce objects and save it as u3d. 2. Import this in your FrameMaker file. Add-On: If you like to set links in FrameMaker to views and animations in you u3d and to create a 3D PDF, then take SQUIDDS 3D Communication Package (www.squidds.de/en/3dpdf) - Georg Framers, I know this is way off topic - but knowing how much knowledge there is on here, I'm hoping somebody can point me to a good resource or forum to help. I'm trying to get vector images from Solidworks e-drawings into FrameMaker and then to PDF. However in the resulting PDF, the vectors draw so slowly on the page that it is causing problems for our readers.

Validate FrameMaker message URL links
Hello Framers, I am developing a script that will go through all of the message URL Hypertext links in a document or book and validate them. It will actually "try" each link to make sure they point to a valid URL. A hyperlinked log file will be created for any invalid links, so you can easily get the problem markers. The script will require FrameScript and MSXML 4.0 or higher (Microsoft's free XML parser). If I have enough interest, I can get the cost down to around $100. Please contact me offlist if you are interested. Please let me know if you have any questions or comments. Thank you very much. convert inline elements to xrefs
Thanks everybody for their input such as: * use a FrameMaker plugin called Node Wizard. This could work very well if the target element wouldn't be an element of type Cross-Reference which is "special" and can't easily be generated, at least that's what I've seen from a quick test. I'd love to be told that there is a way. * write a FrameScript - I'm no expert, but this could well be a possibility, and the documents would stay in Frame (i.e. no loss of manual formatting tweaks). * write an XSLT transformation. I know how to do this, but: The FrameMaker files have already suffered manual tweaks which, I think, would be lost when exporting to XML. * write a script (Python). well, yes, probably, but first you need to get the FrameMaker files into a format that's readable by Python, such as XML (see above). * I also thought then to use the FM -> MIF -> XML+XSLT -> MIF -> FM route which would at least retain the manual modifications, or not? For this I looked at and downloaded Leximation's MIFML tool, which is documented to be able to read 7.2 files. We're using 9.0 for this project. Have there been any dramatic changes between these two versions on the MIF format? There's also a three year-old MIF <-> XML tool written in Java by the guys from O'Reilly (http://left.subtree.org/2007/01/25/converting-mif-to-xml/) but again it's probably not ready to grok the latest and greatest MIF. any more thoughts? To link FM docs into RH projects, you need the Technical Communications Suite, which includes special versions of FM and RH that include the "hooks" to make this possible. Lea Rush quipped: Not quite - his answer is somewhat related to the question. ;) But Daryl is quite deft at sticking to the talking points and he even tried skirting the question with a change-the-subject quick-step. He's already got the "We understand your concern blah-blah-blah" down pat. Just replace "How can we help you?" with "What do I have to do to get your vote?" and Daryl's political career is half-way to the Oval Office. -DJ -Original Message- From: framers-boun...@lists.frameusers.com [mailto:framers-bounces at lists.frameusers.com] On Behalf Of Yves Barbion Sent: Thursday, October 28, 2010 10:04 AM To: framers at lists.frameusers.com Subject: [OT] Adobe's pricing policy Hi group Can someone please explain to me why Adobe Acrobat 9 Standard (Full, no update) costs: - US $299 (216 EUR) when I buy it in the US Store http://bit.ly/aXhtLv - US $554 (401 EUR) when I buy it in a European Adobe Store - http://bit.ly/dtOSd3 I called Customer Support in Belgium and the explanation they gave me was that "the price in the US is lower because they don't have offer free support". I believe the shipping date is Nov 1, but forget where I saw that. And, I have no idea why it is "X" instead of "10". :) My only [usual] gripe is with the upgrade pricing (like all Adobe upgrades!). It is $199 regardless of whether you have Acrobat 9 Pro *or* Acrobat 9 Pro Extended to go to Acrobat X Pro (there is only one X Pro version - nothing called X Pro Extended as far as I can know). IMHO, the price for going from 9 Pro Extended to X Pro should be lower - since we already paid a premium for that 9 Pro Extended version! Z

I knew about Acrobat "X." Good luck getting people to pronounce it as Acrobat 10. Sheesh.

Sorry, I misspoke - not Nov 1. Maybe Adobe has not formally announced anything, but according to Amazon, it is a Dec 1 release date: http://www.amazon.com/Adobe-65083161-Acrobat-X-Professional/dp/B0046DH8PC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8=1288308342=8-1 Given that Adobe is offering "free shipping" from Oct 17 through Nov 30 (from the e-mail I received directly from Adobe on Oct 18) - that Dec 1 date *seems* consistent to previous similar offers. FM 7.0 Locks up on Windows 7
I have noticed something similar with my FM 7 and Windows 7 setup. Often, I will get a "Not Responding" notification in the FM title bar.
