Hi Roger

Yep, opening the files in FM11 first did the trick! Print book to PDF works
again.

Thanks!

FM11 + FM10: background color disappears in CMYK PDF

2012-08-23 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi group

When I save my FM11 or Fm10 file as a CMYK PDF, I see that the background
color of my text is gone in my PDF. It's okay when I select the option to
convert CMYK colors to RGB, but I don't want to convert my colors to RGB.

Is this a known FM bug?

Thanks

Re: Re: Template Override Madness

2012-08-23 Thread Robert Lauriston
You're sure the overrides aren't on the master or reference pages?

When I was cleaning up some legacy docs in FM10 recently, I found that
any time a character tag was applied to a whole paragraph it would
show up as an override. The only way I know to stop that is a kludge:
add a space at the end of the paragraph and close the character tag
before it. Alternatively, create additional paragraph tags.

 Further update:

I downloaded, installed, and ran HuntOverrides and fixed all paragraph

However, it did not solve the problem. I suppose there must be other
overrides, such as tweaked text frames, still in play. I don't know how to
identify them, nor does creating a new document based on the template
 eliminate them.

RE: Template Override Madness

2012-08-23 Thread Craig Ede

You can try this.

Save a copy of your file. Delete everything on the body page (Cntrl-A, then
Delete) and then flip back to the master page. Then flip back to the body page
and accept everything that is on the master page that is set to come through to
the body page. Don't add anything else. Then put your live text back into the
empty text boxes that have been brought to the body page from the master page
from the copy you saved earlier.

A lot of times the stuff that causes these messages are empty text lines where
a person has the graphics text tool selected and then clicks onto the page but
doesn't enter anything. This leaves an empty text line.

Also, it sounds like your template has overrides, so that should be fixed in
this way, too.

 Subject: Template Override Madness

 Hi, all.

I have been struggling with the Remove Overrides issue with the cover page
template for our user guides. It has a busy first page with a lot of text
 flows, graphics, variables, etc.

I could not identify the variation between the body page and the master page,
so I decided to create a brand new file based on the template file. If the
new one was clean, I would ditch the original and rename this one as the
 template file.

I created a new file and it looked great -- but it stiill has overrides! The
new file should use the master page as the basis for the body cover page,
correct? And since I haven't touched the brand new body cover page, I can't
 have created any overrides. Yes

NO! I still get the message.

Other than flipping back and forth between the Body page and the Master page
in the original template file and hoping to spot the difference, I have no
 idea how to fix this.

 All suggestions gratefully received.

Hi Rob

I've grumbled on here about an FM10 crash a couple of times in the last year.
An Adobe engineer got in touch each time. I was impressed! And the crash has

I agree with you about printed manuals, though. We'll be buying a few copies of

Hi Framers:
Down here in South Africa I have been trying to get educational discounts
for Frame products, like TC4, but so far no luck, but then the fat lady has
not sung her FM11 aria yet.
There is a long-term, industry-wide aversion to full print documentation.
This is a great pity. I am sure this knowledge gap restricts market share of
those companies who churn out expensive but undocumented versions of
fantastic programs.
If the corporation dedicated a professional writer to do a full manual of
its product, the product might take off, but no accountant would allow that
as there would not be an immediate return on the balance sheet. Much easier
to upgrade a pdf manual.

By the way, anyone looked at the adobe pdf manuals? They are good, but when
you turn to the index (yes, just one) they are incredibly feeble.
Ununderstandable from one of the industry`s best indexing programs.

Would not know where to start? Well I think this listserv's archive would be
a pretty good place to start. Even a list of common problems and their
solutions might make for a significant missing manual.

I also do not understand why nobody from Adobe watches this space and
comments. Disconcerting to say the least. Cobbler, keep to your last.

it’s very time consuming.

Hi Laura,

We're using Rick Quatro's FindChangeSpecial plugin for this.

On book level, you search for one condition at a time and replace it
with another condition (the same one in all cases) and in the operation
delete the found condition. In a couple of minutes, you now have only
one condition in your book. Then you go through the files one by one and
delete the remaining condition, which takes another few minutes.

Not an instant fix, but much faster than deleting every tag by itself in
every file.

RE: Upgrade to TCS 4 for subscription holders

2012-08-23 Thread Coe, David E
My group purchased TCS3.5 and a support plan with 2-year free upgrades on April
27, 2012, since this is a new product for us we wanted to purchase the latest
version. After seeing this post, I inquired from Adobe why we did not get an
upgrade notification. Their first answer was that TCS 4 was released on April
26, 2012 and the upgrade notification went out this same day, the day before we
purchased TCS 3.5. Their answer as to why we purchased TCS 3.5, that was
version we requested (not once did they try to upsell to the newer version). We
did not know that it was even available to purchase until I saw this post,
Adobe did not bother to let us know then nor did they mention it in the 6-weeks
of multiple support calls after we purchased TCS 3.5. During that timeframe,
their website did not even mention TCS 4 it still had TCS 3.5 displayed. After
some tailchasing, they had to push our request up the line and we finally got
the upgrade license today.

It's sad that we, the users, have to find out through user support forums to
get service and upgrade notices that we paid top-dollar for Adobe to provide to
us.

Hi Framers.
An apology to Adobe staff who have helped others, [but not me!}  and
especially to Dov Isaacs and others who have contributed mightily to this
list.

What I would like to reiterate and why I keep complaining is that pricey
revisions which do not really improve stability are extremely hard to
swallow. I am not simply criticizing for the sake of mouthing off. I earn my
living with FM9 and I am not going anywhere else.

I believe that that much FrameMaker information is locked away from users.
For example, how would the FM user interpret the following set of error
messages which I received today?
Framemaker error
9004
8847891
5207138
5269791

Would the Adobe Forums help? No post on the forum for these.
Would Google help? No hits
Would the manuals help? Hell, no

I have spent a lifetime working on computers in every conceivable situation
from mainframes to laptops and I know what a good manual is. Alas,
FrameMaker does not have one.
An example of a bad manual might be the IBM JCL manual [Job control
language] while a good manual might be the SPSS manual. {Statistical
Package] Perhaps the best software manual ever written.

As Software manufacturers retreated from print manuals, a market gap opened
for the missing manuals.  These increased the cost of the product and
simply are not good enough except to start.

Since we pay top dollar for Adobe products, perhaps we can be assured of a
review of their manual policy.

VENDOR'S POST: reminder of FrameMaker 11 deep dive webinar Tue Aug 7th 10 AM PAC

2012-08-23 Thread Maxwell Hoffmann
Hi,

I avoid postings like this, except at product launch time. The new FrameMaker
11 has many new features that have barely been touched on in recent reviews. I
encourage everyone who can to register for this webinar. If you are unable to
attend, it will be recorded, and you will be sent a link to view it at your
convenience.

Although a great deal has been done to make XML/DITA even more accessible for
practically anyone, many of the new enhancements in FrameMaker 11 will improve
your quality of life if you are authoring regular, unstructured data.

The product presentation and demo will be done by the Sr. Product Manager,
Kapil Verma (@KapilVermaAdobe), so this is a rare opportunity to address your
questions directly to the staff member who owns future feature development.

The webinar takes place from 10AM to 11:30 AM Pacific time, Tues Au 7th. Here

In either case, you should be able to create the four-page 8.5x11 PDF

It would be terrific if we had one deliverable for both the printer and the

RE: Re: Template for four-page brochure?

2012-08-23 Thread David Artman
You have answered your own question--see below:

I neglected to add that we will distribute this document in two ways:

 1. Physically along with the hardware product

 2. In PDF form from the web site

The (2) means you should build it as Letter and have the printer impose
it into a 2-Up, Duplex booklet on 11x17. End users that pull it off of
the web (a) won't know WHAT to do with a pre-imposed booklet and (b)
easily can MAKE it a booklet (or a single-side 4-Up, or a four-page
stack) as they see fit with most modern printers' driver settings.

Relative file size of the two deliverables is managed simply by having
one print-to-PDF setting for the booklet's printer (high DPI; maximal
font embedding; overprint/undercolor settings; etc) and one for the
print-to-PDF setting for the web (compressed, maybe a little lossy,
maybe 150 DPI max, strip special printer control codes, add bookmarks
and tagging, etc).

If you are attempting to deliver a single PDF file for both media
(printer and web) then you've got some tough decisions to make
surrounding print quality versus file size online (and customer
bandwidth). I would advise against trying to do it that way at
all--that's what PDF Settings on BOOK files in FM is FOR! ;)

Lost of AutoNum Override (Unstruct to Struct)

2012-08-23 Thread David L Hottman
We are in the process of converting from unstructured to structured.

When a baseline document has an entire paragraph that is modified, we change
all of the text in the paragraph red by applying a character tag. If the
paragraph has an auto number this also changes the paragraph's auto number
character color.

When we do a conversion to structure, the text in the paragraph remains red
but the auto number goes back to the original color. We have tried with and
without flag paragraph format overrides and flag character format
overrides just to try something, but nothing changed. It is corrected after
conversion by selecting the entire paragraph, going to the character
designer (which shows the correct character tag), and hitting apply.

We have tried this on Windows (7/Vista) FrameMaker 9, 10 , and 11 with the
same results. I am trying to figure out of this is expected behavior or a
bug. Does anyone know if this is how it should work?

Along the same lines..a superscripted character in the middle of the
paragraph is no longer superscripted, is not red, and is not wrapped in a
character tag element. The text on either side of it (same paragraph) is
wrapped in the character tag element.

FM11 - xPath query

2012-08-23 Thread Roger Shuttleworth
Hello All

I just received my new FM11 installation, and wonder if anyone else using FM11
has come across this apparent problem.

FM11 on Windows Vista.

Using the XML view, I am searching for an xPath query such as //section. I
select the Folder option and hit Run. The Browse for Folder dialog opens. In
this dialog I see my local drives and folders, but no mapped network drives.

If I go to Windows Explorer and navigate to the desired network folder,
then copy the address to the clipboard, I can paste that address in the
Browse for Folder dialog and it works OK. But that's no way to have to do it.

Is this a known restriction (local drives only), a bug, or a setting that I'm
missing?

Re: xPath search in mapped network drives

2012-08-23 Thread Roger Shuttleworth
Hello All

FM11 on Vista.

I found out the answer to my question as to why mapped network drives are not
shown when choosing the Folder option for an xPath query. Indeed, they are not
shown in other places in FM too. The answer is to run FrameMaker as
administrator.

You can set it to run as admin by default. Right-click the shortcut and choose
Properties, then set the option on the Compatibility tab.

Just in case anyone else is as perplexed as I was.

FrameMaker 11 and 9 - Doc Team expansion, help.

2012-08-23 Thread Simon Thomson
Hi All

Firstly this is a great resource the FrameUsers List, and admittedly I've
lurked rather than contributed - but now all that could change.. be gentle :)
(so excuse any distribution or admin mistakes feel free to advise
accordingly).

I'm currently the sole tech writer in 'Product A' team, however I have a
contractor starting in v soon (yippee), to help produce finalise publications
- typically just PDF printed books, with next to me, on the same site.

So I'm rapidly sorting his resources i.e. hard/soft ware, desk, phone etc..

My problem, or query is what version of Adobe FrameMaker (FM) should I advise
the the company, a global electromechanical manufacturer to purchase, for the
new starter? I'm currently running Adobe TCS2, using Adobe FM9 daily -
purchased way back in 2009 (wow really :|).

I've priced the initial costs of moving myself to FM11 with a TCS upgrade,
starting the contractor with FM11, and then add other minor additions such as
Acrobat Pro to which the total exceeds £2000 ($3200).. ouch.

I could simplify things buy purchasing from a retailer, a old version of FM9.
Though seems a) missed opportunity slightly foolish to purchase an
unsupported version now (I think?).

I'm hesitant to move to FM11, as another product group in the company, (will
call them Product B team), is considering moving to FM9 - they've got the
s/ware licenses all paid up - but haven't made the leap. Yep, you can lead a
horse to water, but you can't make' m drink it :)).

So the question really is what's the back saving options and support like in
FM11 for working on shared FM9 source content using multiple version of FM?

I can foresee the problem when working with the existing FM9 files, such as
updating publishing, with the new persons version (FM11) - they'd naturally
save as FM 11, unless otherwise specifically back saved, to MIF 7? (Locking the
older FM9 user out opps)

Is there an obvious, easy way to have both version FM9 and FM11 working in
harmony, on the same shared files ( more importantly) FM books, from the same
network server folders (no CMS)?

Does any functionality 'drop out' of the FM9 files, if opened, updated/changed
with FM 11 then back saved using the Mif7 file format for the older team
players on Product A and B teams on FM9?

Is the above the preferred method, or is there other ways? With or without FM
or Third party Add In's?

(The FM 9 version files for product teams A B, are relatively advanced,
though are only unstructured non DITA currently - but contain use Cond. Tags
(15+), Variables, Multiple Master pages (40), Cross references (20), and
Content Insets, to single source Tech data, Revision tracking tags and Ext.
references (artwork images etc ).

I would be really interested in hearing from anyone whose got experience of
sharing FM files with multiple versions of FrameMaker (FM)?
And ideas/experience with multiple user licensing - if cheaper than buying each
s/ware product separately?

Or do you have to move all members of an Authoring team to a uniformed version
(FM11), and take the greater cost on the chin, for the pay off in efficient
file sharing/usage?

Thanks in advance,
Sim

Graphic import object facets problem

2012-08-23 Thread Chris Coggins
Hi,

Thank you for being here. I am trying to troubleshoot a graphics import
problem with one of our frame users that is not occurring with any of our
other frame users. I don't fully understand how frame embeds graphics into
the document so I need some help determining whether these behaviors are
normal.

All are using Framemaker 10, the problem user is on Windows Vista working
across the network (Framemaker is installed on local computer, files are
hosted elsewhere), the others are on XP working on their local computers
exclusively.

This is what I discovered through experimentation on my own computer (XP,
working locally):
When importing a graphic, I use the copy into document setting, and
import the graphic which itself is in PDF format. I shrinkwrap it, then
save the frame file.
At this point, the objects properties pane reports a PDF facet.
I then save the frame file as PDF using the smallest file size filter,
and then save the frame file again.
At this point, the objects properties pane reports both a PDF and EPSI
facet.
I then close the frame file and re-open it. At this point, the objects
properties pane reports a PDF facet only.
The resulting frame filesize is approx. 400k.
I believe this is the preferred result for our needs.

What is happening on the problem user's computer is that the frame file he
generates retains the object faces PDF and EPSI, and also adds a FrameImage
facet after going through the same steps listed above. His frame files are
enormous, 19 megs for the same file used above, and the resulting PDF files
are also huge (17megs). When compiled into a complete book, he's generating
200meg PDFs whereas the rest of us are only putting out 10meg books.

Can someone help me understand what's happening during the import/embed
process and why we're getting different results across our users?

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Chris

Re: templates showing usage WAS: Hello (FM 11 Documentation)

2012-08-23 Thread Robert Lauriston
First, Adobe would have to develop a template feature. You can kludge
something like templates but it's clunky and undocumented, especially
with regard to TOCs and other generated files.

 Hi, all.

I used to know how to update FM file templates in a batch, but I need a
refresher. The process went like this:

 1. Open your FM book.
 2. Use a .dll function, not native to Frame, to save all the book files to
 .mif at once.
 3. Open all the .mif files in a tool that provided a table at the bottom of
 the UI.
 4. In that table, enter the element you wished to replace in the left column,
say a paragraph tag named BL_Heading_1, with the element you wished to
replace it with, say, Heading1. You could enter as many elements as you
wanted, and you could save and reuse the resulting list.
 5. Pass Go!
 6. Hey Presto! Your changes are made.

Can anyone tell me what the .dll was, and what the editing tool was?

I, too, would like a (known-safe) DLL or batch file or script that will
make all FM files save to MIF!

I've kind of dreaded that stage of the complex project on which I'm
working (making a checklist link to a full guide, using one file set and
conditional text and MIF to build the checklist half).

Thanks!

Our product manager posted to the Framers group on July 30th with a summary of
key highlights of new functionality in FrameMaker 11. He also listed several
highly useful resources.

enhancements to make XML/DITA authoring even easier, and (d) some significant
improvements to rich media, including hot spot hyperlinks between vector

Although the AdobeTV episodes show some exciting capabilities in brief
featurette demos, they are not comprehensive. You really need to attend the
webinar to see it all. The webinar will be recorded; register and if you are
unable to attend you will be notified of the URL for the recorded episode.
Attending also gives you a great chance to ask questions directly to our

p.s. although you will see a great deal about XML/DITA, FrameMaker is still a
terrific authoring solution for people who want single-source output (now to
HTML5 via Tech Comm Suite or Server) in unstructured mode.

How to reset FrameMaker Configuration Defaults

2012-08-23 Thread Thomas, Lynn
I inadvertently converted my user variables to text in one of my documents. I
luckily had a backup stored elsewhere so I simply replaced my document.
Unfortunately, I am still unable to edit user variables. It seems that this
change was to FrameMaker (version 9, p255) and not to the doc. I looked in the
maker.ini file to see if there was a setting I could change but I didn't see
anything related to variables. I did find a setting for variables in the
mif2rtf.ini file however, and changed it to ConvertVariablbes=No but that
didn't change anything either. I then completely uninstalled FrameMaker and
reinstalled but it is still keeping my original configuration. Does anyone know
how I can reset Frame or at least get the option to change my user variables
back?
Thanks.

Installing the Archive Program in FrameMaker 11 (Formerly: Bruce Foster's FrameMaker Archive Program)

2012-08-23 Thread Abungu, Salome (TTI Mpls)
I found an answer to my question so I thought I'd share.

The location for the archive script can be found at
http://blogs.adobe.com/techcomm/2011/07/create-a-book-packager-using-extendscript.html.

Install the Archive Program in FrameMaker 11

1. Download and extract the script (Under Code Snippets, click the link
script attached).

2. In FrameMaker 11, run the script.

a. Click File - Script - Run. A pop will appear.

b. Go to the folder where you saved the script. Select Archive-v2.jsx and
click OK.

View the Archive Program

Click File - Utilities. The archive program should be listed.

FM11 XML view - replace with nothing

2012-08-23 Thread Roger Shuttleworth
Hello Framers

Using FM11 (structured) on Vista SP2.

I open an XML document and switch to XML view. I want to replace a string
(either straight text or a regular expression) with nothing. Leaving the Change
field blank in the Find/Change dialog, I find the desired string and hit Change
Find, or Change All. An error message appears saying that I have to add a
string to the Change field.

To my mind this is a bug. I have reported it as such on the Adobe website, but
would be grateful if someone could confirm for me. Thanks.

Outsize section in book file?

Tech writing for web apps - style guides?

2012-08-23 Thread Amy Super
Hi all,

My company is working on web-based applications. In the past, we've used
the Microsoft Manual of Style for Technical Publications as our style
guide for installed apps, but I'm looking for a source that includes
more web app information. For example, what are the usage rules for
screen, tab, page, link, log in, sign in, etc.

Is there a style guide out there that anybody would recommend?

Thanks!

How to reset Frame's Default Configuration

2012-08-23 Thread Thomas, Lynn
I inadvertently converted my user variables to text in one of my documents. I
luckily had a another copy of the document stored elsewhere so I simply
replaced my document. Unfortunately, I am still unable to edit user variables.
It seems that this dumb change I made was to FrameMaker (version 9, p255) and
not to the actual document. I looked in the maker.ini file to see if there was
a setting I could change and revert back to its original configuration but I
didn't see anything related to variables. I also tried replacing the maker.ini
file with a backup but that didn't work either. I did find a setting for
variables in the mif2rtf.ini file , and changed it to ConvertVariables=No but
again, that didn't change anything. I then completely uninstalled FrameMaker
and reinstalled it but it is still keeping my original configuration and will
not let me edit my user variables. Does anyone know how I can reset Frame to
its original default configuration or at least get the option to edit my user
variables back?
Thanks.

Running H/F Looking Backwards or Current open para

2012-08-23 Thread David Artman
Hi, all--FM8 Unstructured on Win7.

GOAL: Trying to use a Running H/F to show readers the major step in
which they are *currently* working.

ISSUE: The Running H/F picks up the first major step para on the current
page, *NOT* the major step in which they are working.

EXAMPLE: User began step 20.5 several pages earlier, and he or she is
currently viewing the final step, 20.5.h, with step 20.6 appearing
next para down on the page. The Running H/F shows 20.6 because that is
the first para of type step to appear on the page; *BUT* I want it to
show the *most-recent, current* step number: 20.5.

I suspect this is not possible in unstructured FM 8

Thanks, if you got a method!

Marilyn,

Since you don't need to compare the Visio's (which I assume are treated
as graphics), you could try turning off display of graphics in both
files (View Options Show Graphics [I think -- going by memory, but
the shortcut is Alt+V, o, Alt+I]) before trying the compare.

Framemaker Publish WebHelp via RH feature

2012-08-23 Thread John Garison
Hi Framers,

Old line TC guy, first time poster to this list:

I've had mixed success with using the FrameMaker Publish feature. For one
project, it works almost OK (some tweaking required which I can explain if
asked). For another I get disastrous results - TOC either not present,
contains strange things, or books that don't open.

I would appreciate anyone who has wrestled this feature to the ground and
gotten it to cry Uncle to get in touch off list as I am on digest and in
the middle of a bout.

I'm using TCS 3.5 - FM10, RH9.

Thanks,

Re: chapnum appears twice in PDF bookmarks

2012-08-23 Thread Robert Lauriston
I had to duplicate an existing page layout with the chapter number
above the title. My goal was to make the paragraph tags compatible
with Word, Confluence 4 XHTML, and MindTouch XHTML for cleaner export.

Autonumber for the chapter title paragraph tag (in my template,
Heading1) increments the chapter counter but does not display the
number: C:n+

On the chapter-first master page, create a separate text frame for the
chapter number, not connected to any flow.

Put a Running H/F # variable in that text frame with definition:
$paranumonly[Heading1]

TOC reference page definition: Chapter $paranum: $paratext \t $pagenum

On the chapter-first master page, I also have a separate text frame
for the chapter title, connected to the main flow, since that was in
the existing page layout, but I don't think that's necessary.

I don't break chapters into separate .fm files, so I have to use Apply
Master Pages when updating the book. If you split chapters into
separate files, that might not be necessary.

 Hi Framers

I'm using FrameMaker 10 and Acrobat 8 on Windows XP SP3. In my Fm files, I
have designed the autonumbering of my chapters as follows:

 N:$chapnum[space][space][space][space][space][space][space][space][space][space][space]

I insert these blank spaces to push the chapter title to the next line, for
example (and the alignment is Center):

  1
 Getting Started

The chapnum is also included in my table of contents and the spaces are
replaced with a single tab (on the reference page):

 $chapnum\t$paratext\t$pagenum

This works in Fm but when I generate a PDF, I see that the chapnum appears
twice in my bookmarks, for example:

 1 1 Getting Started

I have also tried the following alternatives, but to no avail:

option A: Use a tab and a space in my autonumbering, for example
N:$chapnum\t[space] Same result: chapnum appears twice in my PDF bookmarks
separate the chapnum from the chapter title bu using two separate paratags,
for example ~chapnum (for the chapnum only) and ChapterTitle for the actual
text of the title. ChapterTitle does not have any autonumbering, so I don't
get the chapnum in my PDF bookmarks

The only option I see for now is to this:

 N:$chapnum\t

and put the text of the chapter title on the same line as the chapnum.

 Are there any other alternatives?

 Thanks

Re: FM11: Print book to PDF no longer works

2012-08-23 Thread Roger Shuttleworth
Hello Yves

I just tried printing a small book to PDF using FM11. It worked the three ways
I tried (using the Standard joboptions):

* Book File Save as PDF
* Book File Save Book as PDF

* Book Print Book Adobe PDF printer (not printing to file)

One thing that may be causing you problems is the file compatibility. Have you
tried opening your chapter files in FM11 and re-saving them? Also, when I
printed I had all chapters open; that may make a difference too. Roger

Hi group

This is what I do in Fm 11:

* Open a book.
* Choose File  Print Book.
* Select the Generate Acrobat Data option and do your PDF Setup.
* Deselect Print to File (because I don't want a PostScript file).
* Click the Print button.

Result: nothing happens. This works in Fm 10. Print to PDF also works for .fm
files in Fm11 but not for .book files.

Is anyone else seeing this?

Character styles define styling (format) characteristics--some combination of
font family, size, wieght, angle, alignment, spacing, etc. It does not in any

To avoid confusion with the “greater than” arrow, we use Wingdings Alt+0216 for
a stylized arrow in procs. For example, “Click Start SomethingElse
SomethingElse.”
I’m trying to define this as a Character style but all I can seem to accomplish
is the font family, not the decimal symbol character code Alt+0216.
Whaddya wanna bet this is going to an embarrassingly obvious answer? Please,
someone: embarrass me!

RE: Graphic import object facets problem

2012-08-23 Thread Fred Ridder

Chris Coggins wrote:

What is happening on the problem user's computer is that the frame file he
generates
retains the object faces PDF and EPSI, and also adds a FrameImage facet after
going
through the same steps listed above. His frame files are enormous, 19 megs for
the same
file used above, and the resulting PDF files are also huge (17megs). When
compiled into a
complete book, he's generating 200meg PDFs whereas the rest of us are only
putting out
10meg books.

Can someone help me understand what's happening during the import/embed
process
and why we're getting different results across our users?

Generation of a FrameImage version of imported graphics is an option that is
enabled/
disabled from the Preferences dialog It's in the Compatibility Preferences
section and it's
called somethng like Save FrameImage with Imported Graphics.

FrameImage is an archaic and largely obsolete method for ensuring cross-platform
portability of graphics. The idea was that if FrameMaker stored a version of
the graphic
in a format that it was guaranteed to understand, it wouldn't matter whether
the original
graphics was in a UNIX-specific, Windows-specific, or Mac-specific file format.
But since
only the Windows version of FrameMaker is still a living product, there's no
point to
FrameImage. And that's doubly true if you're already usiung PDF, which is
highly portable.

Re: Plugin for extracting information for XSLT Designer

2012-08-23 Thread Lin Sims
I'm not aware of a single Frame plugin that will provide this
information for ALL those tags (although there may be by now, I'm
still doing research for my Plugin list update), but MIF Muncher will
do what you ask as long as you convert the appropriate file(s) to MIF
format. You can get it here:
http://www.stc-carolina.org/tiki-index.php?page=MIF+Muncher

Note that you will ALSO need to install vbrun300.dll (I think you can
find it on that page, too), because MIF Muncher was developed a long,
long time ago.

RE: How to reset Frame's Default Configuration

2012-08-23 Thread Combs, Richard
Thomas, Lynn wrote:

I inadvertently converted my user variables to text in one of my
 documents.

*All* user variables? How? Via Special Variable, you'd have to do them one at
a time.

I luckily had a another copy of the document stored
elsewhere so I simply replaced my document. Unfortunately, I am still
 unable to edit user variables.

When you go to Special Variable, and in the Variable dialog, select a user
variable and click Edit Definition, does the Edit User Variable dialog open?
IOW, what step in editing user variables are you unable to do?

It seems that this dumb change I made
was to FrameMaker (version 9, p255) and not to the actual document. I
looked in the maker.ini file to see if there was a setting I could
change and revert back to its original configuration but I didn't see
 anything related to variables.

That's because there isn't anything variable-related in maker.ini, and there's
no variable-related dumb change that you could have made to FM. Can you edit
the file? (It's possible to accidentally put a file into read-only mode, but
then you can't edit the text either.)

I also tried replacing the maker.ini
file with a backup but that didn't work either. I did find a setting
for variables in the mif2rtf.ini file , and changed it to
ConvertVariables=No but again, that didn't change anything.

Whoa, you're way off base here -- mif2rtf.ini is a Mif2Go config file, not an
FM config file. It governs the conversion process when you use Mif2Go to export
an FM file to Word.

 I then
completely uninstalled FrameMaker and reinstalled it but it is still
keeping my original configuration and will not let me edit my user
variables. Does anyone know how I can reset Frame to its original
default configuration or at least get the option to edit my user
 variables back?

Re-installsheimer's disease, as Dov Isaacs calls it. Your problem isn't an FM
install/config problem. But I think you need to clarify exactly what steps you
take and what doesn't work before anyone can help you.

Re: Directed arrows

2012-08-23 Thread David Artman
 use Wingdings
Alt+0216 for a stylized arrow in procs. For example, Click Start
 SomethingElse SomethingElse.

I'm trying to define this as a Character style but all I can seem to
accomplish is the font family, not the decimal symbol character code
 Alt+0216.

I would define your character style (ding) and make it bold or
whatever you're doing to the surround text in such a menu path.

Then create a variable (arrow or some other name whose first letter is
unique amongst your variable names) for inserting the arrow using Ctrl+0
(zero). Define it as:

dingØDefault ¶ Font

[Heck... might as well put the spaces in there, too, to save two
keystrokes--I'd go non-breaking for readability, at least for the
leading space. So:]

 dingØDefault ¶ Font

So now, when you need to type it, you press: Ctrl+0, then A, then Enter.

That should be tons faster than pressing: Alt+0216, Shift+Left Arrow,
F8, D, Enter.

And should you decide to return to the very popular standard of using an
angle bracket, you can just edit the variable toand it will all
change at once.

HTH;
David

RE: Spurious unresolved cross references

2012-08-23 Thread Keith Soltys
I meant to post again about this yesterday, but for some reason my messages to
the framers list aren't showing up until the next day.

The problem seems to have gone away. After unsuccessfully rebuilding the cross
references, I went through the file and deleted all of the cross-reference
markers. That generated more error messages.

I shut down the book before I went for lunch, and resumed work in the
afternoon. When I updated the book again, all of the errors disappeared.

I have no idea what happened but it seems to have fixed itself after I
restarted Frame.

AW: FrameMaker Archive Program

2012-08-23 Thread Georg Eck
Hi Salome,

do you know FINALYSER for FrameMaker 10 + 11? or TOOLBOX for FrameMaker
7 to 9:
There are very helpful features like Book transfer that archive your
files.

See more there:

fer.xml.08.1.html

---

Is there a new version of the FrameMaker archive program available? I
remember that someone was working on it at one point. I just didn't know
if it is available. We are about to upgrade to FrameMaker 11. Any
information you can provide is helpful.

Thank you!

RE: Spurious unresolved cross references

I have a FrameMaker 10 book that is reporting several unresolved cross
references when I update the book. I've tried deleting them and
replacing them several times and I still get the errors. However, the
links work perfectly when I use WebWorks ePublisher to create a web
 version of book.

Any suggestions as to what might be going on?

When you update the book, in order to update numbering and resolve
cross-references, FM has to open (in the background) each file in the book. If
something (unavailable fonts, etc.) prevents it from silently opening a file,
it can't resolve cross-references to that file.

Workaround: Open all files in the book before updating the book (at the book
window, hold Shift and go to File Open All Files in Book). You'll get an
error message to acknowledge for each file that FM can't open automatically.
Fix those errors to resolve this permanently.

As Rick said, Mif2Go does this so you can identify
the IDs to use for graphics and tables settings,
which are not otherwise visible in Frame. We show
the IDs when you Shift-click in a para, and the

See User's Guide, par. 5.3.2, Working with FrameMaker

Yes, you need to specify the name of the company from whom you licensed this.

In general, a company from which you license technology will have specific
requirements for what your company must do regarding the license and any
associated trademarks. For instance, we use the Java Platform in our products,
and Oracle requires that the Java logo and trademark acknowledgement be
included in all docs in a very specific manner and that the Java license terms
be appended to our end user license agreement (EULA) so that our customers are
aware of and bound by Oracle's license terms.

Does your product have a EULA? Do you have a legal department that can guide
you? These aren't things you should just make up.

RE: Patent Listing

2012-08-23 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain (syed.hos...@aeris.net)
Hi, Alison.

In my position, I deal with patents quite a bit - have a few that I am on the
inventor list. :) Which doesn't mean that I am an expert, but I interact with
our patent attorneys a lot and I set some internal policy.

The main point I would make is that the fact that a third-party has licensed a
patent to your company to use is _not_ really necessary to identify. It is a
_business_ and contractual relationship between your company and the licensee.

Therefore, in your documentation, it may just be _sufficient_ to just add the
patent numbers in the same way you identified the Ultrasonix patents in the
sample wording (first sentence) in your e-mail.

But, most importantly, your question is best answered by your own patent
attorneys (whether in-house or a retained firm), or your official Legal
Counsel. They may have specific policy requirements that will let you know what
to do.

Z

I *entirely* agree with the public use of trademark and logo attributions - the

2012-08-23 Thread Fred Ridder

Character styles define styling (format) characteristics--some combination of
font family, size, wieght, angle, alignment, spacing, etc. It does not in any
way specify particular characters to use. I think what you want to do is define
a user variable that has the appropriate character style applied as part of its
defintion.

To avoid confusion with the ?greater than? arrow, we use Wingdings Alt+0216 for
a stylized arrow in procs. For example, ?Click Start > SomethingElse >
SomethingElse.?
I?m trying to define this as a Character style but all I can seem to accomplish
is the font family, not the decimal symbol character code Alt+0216.
Whaddya wanna bet this is going to an embarrassingly obvious answer? Please,
someone: embarrass me!

Plugin for extracting information for XSLT Designer

Big batch of old messages arrived this morning

Yup. Most of them were replies to questions posted the last few days of July
and the first week of August. I assume they got held by the mail server for
some reason and then sent with today's date when the logjam was cleared. It's
hard to tell whether the original queries are actually new ones or whether they
are similarly aged and have been unanswered for three weeks.

When you go to Special > Variable, and in the Variable dialog, select a user
variable and click Edit Definition, does the Edit User Variable dialog open?
IOW, what step in editing user variables are you unable to do?

That's because there isn't anything variable-related in maker.ini, and there's
no variable-related dumb change that you could have made to FM. Can you edit
the file? (It's possible to accidentally put a file into read-only mode, but
then you can't edit the text either.)

Whoa, you're way off base here -- mif2rtf.ini is a Mif2Go config file, not an
FM config file. It governs the conversion process when you use Mif2Go to export
an FM file to Word.

Re-installsheimer's disease, as Dov Isaacs calls it. Your problem isn't an FM
install/config problem. But I think you need to clarify exactly what steps you
take and what doesn't work before anyone can help you.

I would define your character style ("ding") and make it bold or
whatever you're doing to the surround text in such a menu path.

Then create a variable ("arrow" or some other name whose first letter is
unique amongst your variable names) for inserting the arrow using Ctrl+0
(zero). Define it as:

?

[Heck... might as well put the spaces in there, too, to save two
keystrokes--I'd go non-breaking for readability, at least for the
leading space. So:]

 ?

So now, when you need to type it, you press: Ctrl+0, then A, then Enter.

That should be tons faster than pressing: Alt+0216, Shift+Left Arrow,
F8, D, Enter.

And should you decide to return to the very popular standard of using an
angle bracket, you can just edit the variable to " > " and it will all
change at once.

Hi all,

My company is working on web-based applications. In the past, we've used the
Microsoft Manual of Style for Technical Publications as our style guide for
installed apps, but I'm looking for a source that includes more web app

Is there a style guide out there that anybody would recommend?

Spurious unresolved cross references

2012-08-23 Thread Keith Soltys
I meant to post again about this yesterday, but for some reason my messages to
the framers list aren't showing up until the next day.

The problem seems to have gone away. After unsuccessfully rebuilding the cross
references, I went through the file and deleted all of the cross-reference
markers. That generated more error messages.

I shut down the book before I went for lunch, and resumed work in the
afternoon. When I updated the book again, all of the errors disappeared.

I have no idea what happened but it seems to have fixed itself after I
restarted Frame.

When you update the book, in order to update numbering and resolve
cross-references, FM has to open (in the background) each file in the book. If
something (unavailable fonts, etc.) prevents it from silently opening a file,
it can't resolve cross-references to that file.

Workaround: Open all files in the book before updating the book (at the book
window, hold Shift and go to File > Open All Files in Book). You'll get an
error message to acknowledge for each file that FM can't open automatically.
Fix those errors to resolve this permanently.

As Rick said, Mif2Go does this so you can identify
the IDs to use for graphics and tables settings,
which are not otherwise visible in Frame. We show
the IDs when you Shift-click in a para, and the
status line returns to normal if you click again.
See User's Guide, par. 5.3.2, "Working with FrameMaker
ObjectIDs", for more details.
