Today: 1-hr webinar, TW comments that cannot be ignored!
Free; no fluff, no hype, no nonsense; Thu, Jan 23, starting 10am PST Register at: https://www3.gotomeeting.com/register/784496246 Often a writer will want to ask for clarification, ask for approval for a change the writer has initiated, or add a comment about a missing item for future reference. However, SMEs and reviewers do not always notice/respond to such notes -- which of course leads to additional iterations and frustrations. This webinar demonstrates how to create a dedicated paragraph format in FrameMaker, to be used to insert questions and comments. The style has a unique design intended to make the TW question/comment stand out. You can include automatic numbering to help identify a specific item. In addition, you can create a list of all TW comments as a generated file. Yet even with all of these techniques, writer's comments tend to be overlooked. The solution is to have these comments automatically appear as comments in the PDF, raising visibility and helping the SME/reviewer to jump from one comment to the next in the PDF. Optional: a message indicating the number/location of open TW notes can be displayed when the PDF is closed (through the DocWillClose action) (no add-ons necessary) Shlomo Perets MicroType, http://.microtype.com FrameMaker/Acrobat/Captivate training consulting * FM-to-Acrobat TimeSavers/Assistants ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. FREE TC CAMP Sat 25 Jan workshop Santa Clara, CA; world premiere live demo FrameMaker 12
For any list members in the SF Bay Area, you have an opportunity to see the first live public demo of FrameMaker 12 this Saturday, Jan 25 at 8:45 AM, in a TC Camp workshop I'm giving at Mission College, Santa Clara. The free workshop is courtesy of Adobe's sponsorship of TC Camp. Other portions of the TC Camp later in the day require a modest fee; I attended last year and can highly recommend it. I hope to see some of you early Saturday morning when I will be sharing new features in Tech Comm Suite 5, FrameMaker 12, FrameMaker XML Author 12 and RoboHelp 11. Subject: RE: OT: Adobe Acrobat Pro and Adobe Reader on same client
I'd echo Syed's point here - We Tech Pubs folk have a habit of repeating something Dov Isaac's said over a decade ago like it's some kind of holy writ, but 10 computer years is about a century in real years ;) Things may well (and certainly ought to) have changed since then. I'd like to see a list of the actual DLLs and registry entries and blah blah that are involved before accepting that Adobe still haven't fixed this. (lol but then again, there are so many corners of FrameMaker that Adobe haven't fixed since they ported it off the NeXT, so who am I trying to kid... ;) ) The standard solution for this kind of issue is to have a virtual machine on which to test your customer experience. If you have Windows 8, it comes with Microsoft HyperV built in, you can create a virtual machine with a few clicks, install Reader in it, and play away to your hearts content. (Shock news: Windows 8 actually does have some useful new features in it, see? :) ) Another handy free virtual machine is Oracle's www.virtualbox.org Give one of these a try and never mess up your precious working environment ever again! Re: Now OT, I suppose. RE: Adobe pricing policies (was: FrameMaker 12 released)
My guess is Adobe's goal in creating FrameMaker XML Author and pricing it at $400 is to eliminate the cost savings incentive for structured FrameMaker users to switch to Oxygen or XMetal instead of adding more FM seats. Also, at $400, I doubt if FrameMaker XML Author is going to be able to compete with other XML editors out there. The idea is fantastic, but the cost needs to be around $100-150 a seat. ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. Send list messages to framers@lists.frameusers.com. RE: Giving some paragraphs a background colour with DITA
FYI - for those who haven't reviewed all new features in FrameMaker 12, a new Pgf box command is available on the Advanced Tab of the Paragraph Designer. Unlike single cell tables, the new paragraph background color creates a box of color than can break columns or pages. Naturally, these values can be replicated as format rules in the EDD. For FM-DITA questions you'll probably get more replies by posting to the framemaker-dita Yahoo group. Applying coloring/formatting to paragraphs via @outputclass is fairly easy by adding context rules to the p (or whatever) element definition that check for a match of that outputclass value and assigning the necessary paragraph tag or style overrides. Doing the same with table cells is not so easy. While you can specify the overall table format based on the tgroup/@outputclass, there aren't any EDD context rules that you can use to assign properties to specific table cells or rows. Apparently FM11 added some new read/write rules that can assign these properties. I'm not familiar with setting these up, but you can read more about it in this post on the Adobe FrameMaker forum .. http://forums.adobe.com/message/6026704 BTW .. I'm in the process of developing a new feature in DITA-FMx that will allow you to specify outputclass values for rows and cells. This should be available in FMx 2.0 when that's released. Cheers, ...scott On 1/21/14 8:26 PM, rebecca officer wrote: Hi everyone We're going to be using FrameMaker (12) to output PDFs from DITA. We'd like certain paragraphs and/or table cells to have a background colour. Our specific usecase is that we produce multi-switch config examples. Sometimes, we find that each switch's content takes up more than a page, and that all the switches are nearly identical. It really helps if we can colour the content differently, so users (and us!) can see whether they're on switch 1, 2 or 3. We thought maybe outputclass would let us do this, but so far we haven't figured out how. We've found online references to doing this with the open toolkit, and for HTML with CSS, but nothing about Framemaker. Is there a way to use the outputclass attribute to style how some elements appear in FrameMaker? If not, is there another way to get the effect we're after? Thanks very much! Were I able to offer e-publishing options for FrameMaker-developed books at low (or even zero) cost, it would justify the price of a 10-12 upgrade. The dream option would be to output to pre-press PDF and Kindle with zero extra work, but I expect it's more complex than that. (I know little or nothing about the Kindle format.) Hi David, Lynda.com has a FrameMaker 11 course, but since it just covers the basics anyway, it would be appropriate for FrameMaker 12. It will cost you $25 per month, but since you have a 30 day trial this will be just right. There are tons of great course on there that you will have access to for the monthly fee. Guys, you keep emphasizing that I used a quote of Dov's from 10 years ago-- and I did (9 years ago, actually). But I also included one other quote and a link to third message in the same post. These were from times more recent. One was from 2010, which was only one version back in Acrobat. I'd call that a recent quote. I'm also sure I've seen Dov say similar later, I just couldn't quickly find a quote to include. FrameMaker freaks me out
At some point while editing yesterday, and I'm not sure what I was doing, *every chapter* in the book I'm working on started displaying all its text as if someone had picked it up and randomly scattered it across the page - complete loss of vertical leading, and sideways shifts as well. Re: FrameMaker freaks me out
Steve, Occasionally my FrameMaker display will go a little berserk. Nothing as serious, so far, as you relate, but similar. Also, there are times when I will delete a graphic, but it remains on the screen, and I know I deleted it. It may be due to a long standing bug in Frame related to refreshing of the display. You might try Ctrl+L (Refresh) one time and see if it has any effect. Or, check if there are any updates to your video drivers. Another possibility. From: hessiansx4 [mailto:hessian...@yahoo.com] Sent: January-23-14 11:23 AM To: Jeff Coatsworth Subject: Re: Need a good introductory tutorial for FrameMaker 12 The Adobe Classroom in a Book series should have something for FM 12 and takes about 40 hours from start-to-finish; it starts with very basic functionality. Happened to me once quite a while back - all tables, in particular, were totally messed up. And, as you noted, a re-start of FrameMaker showed everything was fine - whew! Since then, I have relied on two things: 1. A daily incremental backup schedule that backs up all my changed files every 2 hours (using ShadowProtect from www.storagecraft.com). So that I can recover if I need to. 2. A manual copy of all the FrameMaker files associated with a document into a directory called BACKUP, below the working directory, *just* before I kick off a new editing session - particularly if it has been a few days since I last worked on something. So, that I have a prior editing session version available. And, of course, the problem has not recurred since then ... RE: Subject: RE: OT: Adobe Acrobat Pro and Adobe Reader on same client
Mike, point taken. Dr. Reng said the same thing too. Perhaps ... a different question that may be more interesting: Do people here feel that it is necessary to check a PDF in a Reader only environment if that PDF looks fine in Acrobat? Because, I have yet to see one of my files pass Acrobat rendering and fail to show in Reader. (In my approach, both programs would use the same available fonts though.) If I stop doing that final check, it would just be a bit simpler final process for me. BTW, with my approach, both programs would still find the same fonts available, so missing fonts is effectively not something I check anyway! I just avoid it by having Acrobat embed the fonts as needed. Z Mike Wickham said: Guys, you keep emphasizing that I used a quote of Dov's from 10 years ago-- and I did (9 years ago, actually). But I also included one other quote and a link to third message in the same post. These were from times more recent. One was from 2010, which was only one version back in Acrobat. I'd call that a recent quote. I'm also sure I've seen Dov say similar later, I just couldn't quickly find a quote to include. Anyway, do what you want regarding mixing Acrobat and Reader, but it's not really fair to grab the oldest quote of three and claim it makes all the advice old. ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. I don't normally feel it is necessary. My understanding has always been that Reader is basically the viewing portion of Acrobat. So if it doesn't look right in one, it won't look right in the other. I see Acrobat as Reader, plus a bunch of other features that we have to pay for. I don't know if that's accurate, but it's my impression. Having said that, there are a few times that I've found it necessary to check a file in Reader (on a separate computer). I've never seen any differences in _appearance_ (assuming that I remembered to embed all fonts, which I always do because I have my joboptions set to do so by default), but I have seen problems in functionality. Examples include forms that didn't work in Reader, but did work in Acrobat, because I had some setting wrong. Or the review feature not working-- again, because it wasn't set up right beforehand. So I may check a form in Reader, or a PDF being sent out for review. Mike Wickham ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. RE: Need a good introductory tutorial for FrameMaker 12
Total ignorance is probably overstating it, but one fundamental fact you have missed is that PageMaker and FrameMaker do *not* have a common ancestry. What they have in common (besides the coincidental similarity in their names) is that they were both acquired as mature products by Adobe. PageMaker was originally developed by Aldus Corporation with the original Macintosh version released in 1985 and a version for Windows 1.0 two years later. The company and its products were acquired by Adobe in 1994, and the product was eventually discontinued in 2004. FrameMaker, on the other hand, was originally developed by an astrophysics grad student at Columbia. An entrepreneur saw a demo version running on a Sun workstation and formed a company, Frame Technology, to commercialize it circa 1985. Originally it ran only on SunOS, but it was also ported to other flavors of UNIX in its early years. In 1990 a Mac version appeared, and a Windows version followed two years later. The lower-cost Mac and Windows versions killed the sales of the much more expensive UNIX version and the company's sales and profit steadily slid toward zero before Adobe purchased them in 1995. Also, the two products do not (or rather, *did* not since PageMaker is a dead issue) the same thing. PageMaker was intended for things like brochures, newsletters, and magazines, where each page is likely to have a different layout. FrameMaker is intended for long documents (e.g. books) with consistent, repetitive page layouts. It can do page-by-page layouts, but not very flexibly and not very efficiently because that's not what it was designed for. -Fred Ridder From: urszulawither...@jetsetcom.net Subject: Re: Need a good introductory tutorial for FrameMaker 12 Date: Thu, 23 Jan 2014 12:24:16 -0500 To: david.h.down...@gmail.com CC: framers@lists.frameusers.com David, just be sure you do not compare FrameMaker to PageMaker. RE: Book TOC links Not Working in Sharepoint
Well, you could test that assumption by using Firefox. Have you checked the Adobe FM forums for FM/SharePoint posts? I know there's been some chatter on the subject...
Optional: a message indicating the number/location of open TW notes can be displayed when the PDF is closed (through the DocWillClose action) (no add-ons necessary) Shlomo Perets MicroType, http://.microtype.com FrameMaker/Acrobat/Captivate training & consulting * FM-to-Acrobat TimeSavers/Assistants -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Opening FM 9 via Remote Desktop crashes
Hi, I have FM 9 (latest patch) running on Windows 7. I want to use FM via Remote Desktop. If FM is already open, I have tested opening/editing/saving a FM file sucessfully. If i click on the taskbar where FM is pinned to launch the application, the typical FM error screen is shown after a few seconds. I have FrameScript and do have a start-up file; I removed it and redid the test with a similar FM crash. Any suggestions? B...Here in Quebec CIty it is -35 Celcius with the wind and has been like that for a week now. As I walk 30 minutes to and from a bus stop on weekdays, I have taken to wearing a hood used when skiing! I look like a thief who is smoking heavily but do not attract any attention. After a 1/2 hour of walking, even my snacks (chewy bars) are frozen! And the polar bears drinking the Pepsi look so happy in those ads :) Stephen O'BRIEN Coordonnateur ? la documentation et r?dacteur technique senior | Documentation Coordinator and Senior Technical Writer InnovMetric Logiciels | Software sobrien at innovmetric.com<mailto:sobrien at innovmetric.com> T (1) 418.688.2061 F (1) 418.688.3001 [cid:image001.jpg at 01CF1856.F1A91D80]<http://www.polyworksconference.com/> AVIS DE CONFIDENTIALIT?/CONFIDENTIALITY NOTICE: Ce message peut contenir des renseignements confidentiels appartenant exclusivement ? Opening FM 9 via Remote Desktop crashes
I haven't tried to do FM with a Remote Desktop, but the first thing that occurred to me is that the program may not be executing with Admin privileges. Are all the user permissions in order on both sides of the desktop? Just as a control, you may want to try a third party solution such as CrossLoop (my choice) or GoToMyPC... I think they're both free trials. Art Art Campbell art.campbell at gmail.com "... Opening FM 9 via Remote Desktop crashes
Salut a chilly Toronto! Has this ever worked for you? I run FM via RDP from home most days, but I first VPN into our corporate network, the RDP to my office desktop (when FM is installed) and run it from there. No crashes (except the "known" ones) doing it that way. In your scenario, where is FM running?
