Don't get me started on bullets and autonumbering in MS applications. Once upon
a time it just worked. And then they started making it more "helpful" and
automatic... and unreliable and impossible to troubleshoot when it breaks.

But if you want to see a real horror show, spend a while trying to clean up the
bullets in PowerPoint slide decks that have contributions from a half-dozen
different engineers in three different countries using four different templates
(or no template at all). I just went through that exact scenario on 21 separate

So all-in-all, it's just Adobe emulating Microsoft.
(What does he mean by that?) Back in 2006 while I was contracting for an
engineering firm and ordered to use only Word "so the engineers could correct
my work." (Ptooey!) I remember an incident where I used Word's paragraph
tag-method to tag bulleted text.
I was on page 125 or so, tagged something bullet and voila!, every bullet in
the book disappeared, yet all "bulleted text" was still tagged that way. I
tried everything I knew to fix things but to no avail.
But, ah, thank heavens for Ctrl-Z. Everything returned, except for the last
bullet that I worked on. I don't remember how I "fixed" things that day, but I
did post a message on the tech-wrl e-mail list, asking how could Microsoft let
this happen.
The reply / replies were basically, "Because Microsoft CAN (let this happen)
because it doesn't matter to them since we're just peons."

So, the ancient recollection of something eating keystrokes was generically
on the right troubleshooting path. Hooray!

As to other old memories:

FullWrite Professional (a promising feature-filled Mac word processor) had
the fantastic ability to randomly animate bullet points, so, there was no
reason to get bored while staring at pages of pithy tech content on screen.
You could just watch and wait for one or more of them to hop around.

Then, there was the post claiming that "lorem ipsum" placeholder text
wasn't randomly-generated, but was arguably written by indentured scribes,
forerunners of technical writers, because the translation was something
like "we love to write and beat ourselves with sticks."

Cheers!

Hi Carol,

interesting. I do not have the "Automatically download updates, but let me

I guess the best is to post your question in the corresponding thread in the

the update did not check if Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 Redistributable Package

You might want to check your Acrobat setting. In Acrobat Pro DC, go to > Edit >

Subject: [Framers] Question for Stefan Gentz re the April 27
AdobeGCClient.exe System Error

Stefan, I hope that you can help sort something out that has
bothered me ever since the April 27 Adobe system error occurred.
That was the one where users trying to start Framemaker, Acrobat,
and/or Distiller suddenly experienced this error: "The program can't
start because MSVCP140.dll is missing from your computer." There was
a huge flurry of posts to adobe's forums (see
https://forums.adobe.com/thread/2308268). The end result is that the
problem was created by an update that Adobe pushed out and they
resolved it the next day by rolling back the update.

The part of this that has me confused is that I should not have ANY
updates to ANYTHING being pushed onto my system. I'm running Windows
7 64-bit and Framemaker 12. My OS is set to never allow Windows to
update anything automatically. Obviously I'm not using Adobe CC so
any auto-updates should not occur.

So 1) how did I receive the initial update that caused this problem;
and 2) how did I receive the roll-back to the update that fixed the
problem? What part of "no automatic updates to my system" is being
bypassed here?

Thanks for any information you can glean and share with us regarding
this issue.

Re: [Framers] FrameMaker keyboard shortcuts just stop

2017-05-02 Thread Lin Sims
The only commonality I've seen is FrameMaker from version 9 on up, which
was when the interface was redesigned.

I've seen numerous gripes since that time that the new coding had broken
some of the keyboard shortcuts, but it used to be restricted to just the
UNIX carryovers. Recently,I've actually had mine break on Ctrl+C, and that
since upgrading to FrameMaker 2015.

At this point, I don't even ask why. I just grumble about how FM used to be
the most stable program I'd ever used, and restart the program. I haven't
had to reboot to fix this. Yet.

Re: [Framers] Question for Stefan Gentz re the April 27 AdobeGCClient.exe System Error

2017-05-02 Thread Stefan Gentz
Hi Carol,

unfortunately I cannot help regarding this. As far as I know, this issue has
nothing to do with FrameMaker. As far as I understand from quickly scanning the
thread you linked (which points to the Acrobat forum) it has something to do
with a Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 Redistributable Package that was not present
on some of the user's systems.

Please understand that I cannot give any answers regarding your Windows
configuration and what Microsoft updates in any way on your system.

However, what I can tell you for sure is, that there is no automatic update (or
uninstalling updates) in any FrameMaker in any version up to FrameMaker 2017.
There is not even an automated check for updates - you have to trigger that
manually. Situation might be different, if you have installed FrameMaker in a
larger enterprise ecosystem and your admin rolls out updates to your system
automatically.

As far as I understand, this has nothing to do with FrameMaker. My understandin
is, that it has to do with some Updates in Acrobat that were rolled out. This
change has been made to ensure the software is using runtimes that Microsoft is
currently supporting. The problem occurred, as far as I understand, because
the update did not check if Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 Redistributable Package
is actually installed on the user system. But I'm really not an expert in this
field.

You might want to check your Acrobat setting. In Acrobat Pro DC, go to > Edit >
Preferences and select "Updates" on the left in the categories. There you can
activate / deactivate "Automatically install updates". What does it say in your
system?

Re: [Framers] FrameMaker keyboard shortcuts just stop

2017-05-02 Thread Peter Gold
Just a couple of wild thoughts pulled from long-ago experiences:

It sounds as if the normal flow of keystrokes is being affected somehow.

In the hardware domain, is it possible that there are keyboard driver
issues - updates needed, multiple conflicting keyboards or other input
devices, multiple display screens and associated drivers? Less exotic, is
it possible that the usual physical keyboard itself has intermittent keys
or connections? If it's wireless, does connecting it with a cable fix the
issue? Charging or replacing its battery? Does the problem persist when
substituting a different keyboard?

In the software domain, are there utilities running in background, like
font managers, display customizers, or screen-capture demons?

System domain: Does varying the settings for keyboard repeat speed and
other adjustments affect the problem? What about trackpad/touchpad/graphics
tablet sensitivity settings?

HTH.

Hello,

Has anyone had difficulty downloading FrameMaker 2017 update 1, from the
FrameMaker downloads page?
The table does not appear to detail anything about the download.

I can't use the Adobe Update Manager due to security protocol restrictions at
customer sites.

I tried the link on the "New Downloads" link:

https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fsupportdownloads.adobe.com%2Fsupport%2Fdownloads%2Fnew.jsp=02%7C01%7C%7Cc31755256ae34f22566b08d4915d35fa%7Cfa7b1b5a7b34438794aed2c178decee1%7C0%7C0%7C636293276904453249=SL85Mpq59VTdcFmGHkyJ6LHNDVNVbeu7uyJMeGkC8Yo%3D=0
but the web page responds with the line:
Error in obtaining download items, please try again later.

I then decided to try the Downloads Help page:

https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fsupportdownloads.adobe.com%2Fsupport%2Fdownloads%2Fhelp.html=02%7C01%7C%7Cc31755256ae34f22566b08d4915d35fa%7Cfa7b1b5a7b34438794aed2c178decee1%7C0%7C0%7C636293276904453249=f8Sq%2FJ5w%2BI6iLY4%2FNiWWH0HM7wt3YUuXTwVfrzDouUM%3D=0
and tried the "Unable to connect to the Adobe FTP site" link, which gave the
text "Sorry, this page is unavailable"

Re: [Framers] FrameMaker keyboard shortcuts just stop

2017-05-02 Thread Lin Sims
We recently (as in the beginning of this year) upgraded to FM2015.

I think I'm going to add Alison's checks / process to my final processing.
I haven't had colors show up, but I have had issues with text that has
conditional tags either showing up (or not showing up) inappropriately.

And hope I remember what is supposed to be visible. I may have mentioned
that this damned thing is VERY complicated, although I have, finally,
gotten conditional expressions that control things properly and are
actually fairly elegant (after having used the BFME method first).

[Framers] Question for Stefan Gentz re the April 27 AdobeGCClient.exe System Error

2017-05-02 Thread Carol J. Elkins
Stefan, I hope that you can help sort something out that has bothered
me ever since the April 27 Adobe system error occurred. That was the
one where users trying to start Framemaker, Acrobat, and/or Distiller
suddenly experienced this error: "The program can't start because
MSVCP140dll is missing from your computer." There was a huge flurry
of posts to adobe's forums (see
https://forums.adobe.com/thread/2308268).

So 1) how did I receive the initial update that caused this problem;
and 2) how did I receive the roll-back to the update that fixed the
problem? What part of "no automatic updates to my system" is being
bypassed here?

Thanks for any information you can glean and share with us regarding
this issue.

Re: [Framers] FrameMaker keyboard shortcuts just stop

2017-05-02 Thread techcommtools.com
FWIW, I’ve had great results with conditional text in Fm2015 and Fm2017.

And each subsequent release since Fm10 (including Fm2017) has crashed less than
the previous.

I run Fm on a very lean (75 Gb Virtual disk, running Win 8.1) with 16 Gb memory.

Specifically, the changes in conditional text in 2015 and 2017 make conditional
text much more enjoyable.

Coupled with the Smart Insert for Conditional Text dialogs (Ctrl 4, 5, and 6),
things just work better.

Re: [Framers] FrameMaker keyboard shortcuts just stop

2017-05-02 Thread Craig, Alison
Sometimes the Conditions don't show up correctly - bits of text have the wrong
Condition showing or a segment or 2 stays in the Conditional colour.

I've learned to always:

- reboot before setting the final manual Conditions for each manual
- finalize with Conditional colours showing
- turn off Conditional colours and do a last check for "coloured text" before
distilling
- page through the entire PDF watching for text still visible in the
Conditional colour(s).

Re: [Framers] FrameMaker keyboard shortcuts just stop

2017-05-02 Thread Craig, Alison
I wonder if this is related to the fact that I have to reboot before creating
the final condition settings for manuals.

If I don't, and I've been working hard in Frame for as little as 2-3 hours
beforehand, chances are there will be "glitches" with the conditional text.

This happens in Frame 12, which I currently use, and Frame 9. I've always
assumed there is some issue with memory.

Having to reboot - often - when you're trying to create 6 different manuals
from the same set of files has a high PITA factor.

I also notice that I'm much more likely to have a crash during heavy Frame 12
(or 9) use if I haven't rebooted regularly during the day (note that I almost
always reboot every evening before I leave the office).

Hello,

Has anyone had difficulty downloading FrameMaker 2017 update 1, from the

The table does not appear to detail anything about the download.

I can't use the Adobe Update Manager due to security protocol restrictions at

I tried the link on the "New Downloads" link:

and tried the "Unable to connect to the Adobe FTP site" link, which gave the

Re: [Framers] FrameMaker keyboard shortcuts just stop

2017-05-02 Thread Lin Sims
Yeah, pretty much what Robert said. Frame8 was the last version where the
keyboard shortcuts worked as intended all the time. Something about
instituting the new interface broke things.

As someone who used to use those shortcuts ALL THE TIME, it's annoying that
some don't work ever, and that they all won't work some of the time as
described by Ken.

Re: [Framers] [WTF ramemaker] Anyone using MIF-to-Go with FM '17?

2017-05-02 Thread Scott Prentice
Yes .. if Save As XML does what you need, by all means, use that since
it'll be easier. But if your processing requires more document data in
XML, you'll either need to set up a conversion and structure app, or use
MIF->MIFML.

This (free) command line utility converts from MIF to MIFML (and back

You just have to write some XSLT to transform from the MIFML into
something useful.

It did not work with FM 2015, and I was working on going the MIF2Go
source to see if I could update it.

Unfortunately, my temporary license for FM 2015 expired before I made
any real progress, so the project stalled.

Now that FM 2017 is out, I suspect it does not work. Although I have
the MIF2Go sources, I don’t have access to a licensed version of FM
2017, so cannot resurrect this effort.

Separately, however, I have made much progress on a MIF file
reader/analyzer to do a LaTeX convertor for myself – my current
process is manual.

I need a lot more MIF material to test my code with though - all my
test files are from FM 12. So, I may, someday, provide a completely
new MIF2Go equivalent for the community.

In the meantime, sorry for the news, Art!

Assuming it works, is there anything unique in the setup?

Again, as someone who is forced to use FM8 daily (alongside FM10,12,2015), I
have to say that is not path you want to follow.

The problem does sound like some sort of memory leak thing within FrameMaker
though, and they should fix that. You can bet they wont' go back and fix
previous versions, so that's another argument against 'downgrading'.

Umm, if something is completed earlier than originally scheduled, the

Re: [Framers] Configuring FrameMaker default page size (with or without vm ware)

2017-05-02 Thread techcommtools.com
Hi Steve,

By happy coincidence you can thank Bernt Lie for the following Modifying the
base FrameMaker template addition to my Fm 2017 reference book.
http://amzn.to/2pTxTbk

While reviewing the book for me, he requested the exact thing you’re asking
about. I’ve also included a short Editing maker.ini section

Of course, the material is much more easily professionally laid out within the
book!

Editing maker.ini
To edit maker.ini, do the following:
Close FrameMaker.
There are two maker.ini files. You will find maker.ini in these locations:
The installation directory. Your application’s copy of maker.ini file might be
in
C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe FrameMaker 2017
The user directory. On Windows 8.1, your personal maker.ini file might be in
C:\Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\FrameMaker\14
Edit only one of the maker.ini files.

If a setting is displayed in both maker.ini files, the settings in maker.ini in
the Documents and Settings folder take precedence over the settings in the
FrameMaker folder.

Create a backup of maker.ini.
Open the original maker.ini file in a text editor such as Notepad or PSPad.
Scroll down until you find the setting you want to change. The sections that
follow describe some recommended changes.
Edit the text, then save maker.ini. Your changes are saved and applied the next
time you open FrameMaker.

Modifying the base FrameMaker template
At or about line 249 in the maker.ini file is a setting for the default file
used when creating a new FrameMaker document. By default file the file is
specified as custom, and has no .fm extension on the file name. To alter the
physical attributes of a new FrameMaker document, you can open the file
directly from the fminit directory, change as needed (for instance, you could
change the page size to A4, or set the display of rulers, text symbols, borders
as desired) and then save changes to the document. To ensure the file acts
appropriately, do one of the following:
Save changes to the custom file (creating a file called custom.fm) and then
modify the file name to remove the .fm extension
Modify the maker.ini file to look for the modified file name (custom.fm)

Save changes to custom as something like customA4 or customA4.fm, and modify
the maker.ini file to match the specified name

I recommend this last option, as it retains the original custom file, in case
you ever want to revert to the standard FrameMaker behavior.

[Framers] FrameMaker 2017, Update 1 - where is it for direct download?

2017-05-02 Thread Simon BUCH

Hello,

Has anyone had difficulty downloading FrameMaker 2017 update 1, from the
FrameMaker downloads page?

The table does not appear to detail anything about the download.

I can't use the Adobe Update Manager due to security protocol
restrictions at customer sites.

I tried the link on the "New Downloads" link:
http://supportdownloads.adobe.com/support/downloads/new.jsp
but the web page responds with the line:
Error in obtaining download items, please try again later.

I then decided to try the Downloads Help page:
http://supportdownloads.adobe.com/support/downloads/help.html
and tried the "Unable to connect to the Adobe FTP site" link, which gave
the text "Sorry, this page is unavailable"

Re: [Framers] [WTF ramemaker] Anyone using MIF-to-Go with FM '17?

2017-05-02 Thread Art Campbell
XSLT wouldn't be trivial but it's doable by mere mortals.

Scott (or anyone): What would be the reason to go this route instead of a
straight save to FM XML?

My original reason for posting was to get cleaner RTF/Word than FM is
putting out, but this feels like overkill...

Cheers,
Art

[Framers] Configuring FrameMaker default page size in Parallels

2017-05-02 Thread Steve Rickaby
Dear Frame Gurus

I'm recent to FrameMaker on Windows, but have been using FrameMaker itself
since v 3 on Mac.

So I have no direct experience of the fminit (?) file (?) other than vaguely
knowing of its existence. I need to do a trivial config to set the default page
size to A4 rather than US Letter. I looked at the Adobe documentation, but the
files it seemed to suggest I could modify (C:...FmInstallDir/fminit/maker)
turned out to be a directory containing a couple of files that appear to be
binary: tmpltbrw and tmpltbrw_s.

Can someone point me in the direction of an idiot's guide to changing the
default printer page size, and/or the actual ASCII file for configuring
FrameMaker's startup defaults? Or does this originate with Windows itself? I'm
on Windows 7 Pro in Parallels Desktop 9.

I wouldn't mind so much if the page size was stored with the document, but it
isn't.
