2021-10-14 Thread Caroline Tabach
After leaving Framemaker (which I worked with for about 20 years!), I
arrived at a company which publishes everything directly to the web using
Document360.
But this doesn't do everything I want, so I am looking into different
options, to publish to the web, create PDF files if required, as well as
make a html 5 help file.

So I am looking for something else

Happy to hear ideas offline

Re: [Framers] Appearance of graphics in the generated PDF

2021-08-05 Thread Caroline Tabach
Possibly you don't have to save as html.

I can't check this right now, but docx, is itself xml.

This is how you can get graphics from a Word docx, by changing extension
to zip

Text below is from a text from David Creamer to this list a few years ago,
but I don't remember where I learnt it

There are various tutorials on the web

I might suggest a slightly different way of getting the graphics out of a
Word file (works for PowerPoint too)...

Make sure the file is in the .docx format, not .doc (and .pptx, not .ppt)
Make a copy of the file for safety
Change the file extension from .docx to .zip
Open the zip file
Look for the doc folder (or ppt)
Look for the media folder
All the graphics are there--usually in a higher quality than a web export

Give it a try to get your graphics files

I do not have the new Frame 2020, but they say there is a new feature that
will allow you to split the imported Word doc into separate Frame files

[Framers] Acrobat DC & Frame etc

2020-04-27 Thread Caroline Tabach
Hi.

I have Frame 2017 on my system and Acrobat Pro DC, as part of Creative
suite.

For some reason, IT have decided to remove the Acrobat (and creative suite)

1. Will I still be able to create PDF files, or will they have to reinstall
Frame in order to be able to use the built in PDF in Frame?

2. What won't I be able to do to PDF files if I only have the version that
comes with Frame?

I currently add password protection to files, make numbering of pdf match
file numbering, extract pages, edit files.

What functionality will I be losing?

Thanks

Re: [Framers] Layout.CSS in Responsive HTML5

This is something that ought to work

here are some things i found on the Adobe forum

that possibly could help.

Try the instructions here to edit the *CSS *from Frame instead of importing
your own.

Maybe that would help?

My file names are usually with no spaces and no punctuation, from old
Mif2Go days, which could not cope with anything like that.

It was just the folder name, and such a strange and unconnected problem
that resulted.

Well, I won't make that mistake again.

[Framers] MiniToc Disappers from HTML5 Help in Frame 2015

2020-03-18 Thread Caroline Tabach
This worked last week and does not work now

Hello everyone,

Hope you are all keeping well and safe,

I hit a problem.

I had a MiniToc that provided hyperlinks at the beginning of each main
topic in the help file.

It was fine for the past year, and then something stopped working. Nothing
was updated or changed in my system as far as I know.

But suddenly, the MiniToc from the Frame doc does not appear in the HTML5
help file.

It does have a help condition. In the Frame file when I apply the condition
it appears, but it does not appear in the Help file that I create. I
cannot find anywhere a definition that says the MiniToc should not appear
in the resulting Help file.

This all worked very well for the last year, but suddenly does not work
well today and I cannot work out what could have changed.

Does anyone have any idea what I can do? Or how to solve this?

Thanks very much

How about making a mini TOC with the heading 2s

Give it a heading see also

Then have it only show in the Help.

I do this.

I had a problem with page numbers showing in the HTML.
Rick Quatro told me I can make this conditional on the reference page

[Framers] Make numbering of Acrobat match Frame numbers automatically

2020-01-02 Thread Caroline Tabach
Hi,

My PDF of a user guide made from a FrameMaker book has the front matter
numbered with Roman numerals, so the numbers of the PDF do not match those
of the Frame file. (Frame p1 is PDF p9).

I have found and adjusted instructions to make the numbering match

https://www.w3.org/TR/WCAG20-TECHS/PDF17.html

(It is different in the latest version of Acrobat, as these controls seem
to be more hidden).
But it needs to be done manually each time.
Is there any way to automate this, or set these settings in FrameMaker to
carry over to Acrobat?

Thanks

[Framers] Resources for getting up and running in Frame

2019-05-26 Thread Caroline Tabach
Hi
A friend of mine needs to start working with FrameMaker.

What resources do you recommend to help her get started and understand how
it works (your favorite web sites, books etc) as fast as possible?

Thanks

Re: [Framers] [WTF ramemaker] Best Practices for HTML Online help

2019-05-16 Thread Caroline Tabach
Hi

In the link you sent, it says that the FrameMaker publish procedure creates
a sample h file.

And it does indeed.

Unfortunately, as you noted, creating HTML 5 help is not documented well
enough in the Frame help.

Tomorrow I will be in the office, and be able to send you the code we used.

It is also on the Adobe forum, if I find the link I will send it to you.

Hi

search would work on these terms.

5.) "Most of our products have order codes like 123.4567. When I want to
search for such order codes, the . is interpreted as separator between
two words. As if I want to search for 123 and 4567. I do not know a
solution."
6.) In my tests (FM 2019) using "wx.yz" seems to work, but highlighting
didn't work - I'll ask the FM development team regarding this issue
WR: The issue is: We have many order codes which start e.g. with 125.
When I enter "125.xyz" as search string, then _all_ order codes with "125"
will be found.
However, only 125.xyz should have been found.
It does not matter, if I change the option "Enable Substring Search" in the
Search settings.
Or in the converted HTML5 change "Display results with all search words".
The solution user has to enclose the whole text in double quotes. Then this
works.

I have been doing responsive HTML 5 output.

Regarding the settings file, sometimes it suddenly becomes corrupted, so
make a copy of the file you are using

Re: [Framers] TOC pane in responsive HTML

2019-04-10 Thread Caroline Tabach
Hi
this is the answer for 2017, I presume it is the same for 2019
You need to edit the settings file.
Choose Edit then
Click the Style mappings tab
Under general settings
"Add all Topics to Table of contents" should be selected.
then in "Topic Name pattern" you should choose <$paratext>

I think it is not possible to send a screen cap to the group, let me know
if you want a screen cap offline, or any more details

Re: [Framers] Best Method, Word 2013 to Frame 2019.

2019-03-13 Thread Caroline Tabach
Hi
I would like to recommend this explanation of the new Word import.

https://techcommtools.com/framemaker-word-import/

by Matt Sulivan

Inserting graphics and fixing tables still take a long time afterwards,
there are a lot of tools out there that can be helpful, e.g. TableCleaner,
Paragraph Tools by Silicon Priarie, global update of paragraph tags etc.

Re: [Framers] Best Method, Word 2013 to Frame 2019.

2019-03-12 Thread Caroline Tabach
Frame has import from Word.
It actually works. If you have styles in Word, it is really good.
You have to save the file as..doc
>From Frame file menu
Choose import file, as copy

Then the first time there is a settings box
You need to map Word styles to Frame files and then import.

It works well.

Once you make a settings file that you are pleased with, save it and reuse
it each time.

However, it did not cope with my 300 plus page book, so I had to make
smaller word files from it.

However, for graphics use the tip about docx, right click on your docx fike
and choose unzip.

You will get a folder of graphics.

There are a few good tutorials on the internet for this.

It takes quite a while, especially if there are many graphics.

I have precise notes in the office, but am not currently there.

[Framers] CSH HTML5 from Frame 2017 How should the Developers call the help pages

2019-02-13 Thread Caroline Tabach
I want to create CSH for HTML5 in Frame

I have Frame 2017 (no robohelp)

I have used the help, as well as the Adobe FrameMaker forum and found all
the information about this.

I saw how to add the markers, use the h file etc.

The one thing is that not clear to me

What must I tell the programmers to call so that they get the correct help
pages?

Someone wrote in one of the threads on the forum that they must use

output-path>/index.html?rhcsh=1=

= content of corresponding TopicAlias Marker.

However, this includes robohelp code

Is this correct for someone who is only using Frame?

I have searched everywhere but not found the correct info to give the
developers. I just need this missing link and we will be ready to go.

Is anyone making CSH for HTML5 from Frame (2015/2017 upwards) only?

Re: [Framers] Any feedback on FM Publish Tools in 19?

2019-01-13 Thread Caroline Tabach
I have been using publish to make HTML5 help for some time.

It is customizable, and results are nice.

The instructions in the Frame user guide itself are not enough to get the
best results.

Help from experienced users both here and on Adobe forum is both essential
and invaluable, and you can do all sorts of things.

Problem with vanishing sts file is a real issue.

We should probably open a bug

[Framers] Frame "Forgetting" colors?

2019-01-03 Thread Caroline Tabach
Have you ever seen this?
Frame 2017

I have character styles set in a certain color.
Suddenly I saw in the PDF that it was black.

I checked the color definitions and dark green was suddenly black
I checked all files...
The color definitions had got "broken" or lost or forgotten.

So I imported it in from the template file and now everything is OK.

But has this happened to anyone before?
Any idea what causes this?

Re: [Framers] Expected Size of HTML5 Help file - from your experience and knowledge

2018-12-26 Thread Caroline Tabach
Frame 2017 (without RH)
Well,
I have partly solved the issue mentioned below.

I wanted to make sure I only worked on relevant graphic files, so I used
"package" to get them. This actually reduced the size of the .png files for
some reason.

I then used Photoshop to reduce the size of these files.

Eventually the size of the help package was reduced to 9-10 Mb approx.

However, the User guide/project will grow. We are talking about a user
guide which has nearly 300 pages, and they are adding components all
the time.

If you make HTML 5 help file, what is the expected size of the file, and is
there any way to make it smaller.

How large is a basic project?

Does it depend on the Skin (Working without RH).

Thanks

Re: [Framers] Size of HTML5 Help file - how to reduce

2018-12-24 Thread Caroline Tabach
Well, after investigation, some of these files are not so small after all.

If I use Snagit, how should I be taking screen caps to get them smallest
size, for the future.

How can I reduce the size of the current screens?

Tiny png files imported by reference.

[Framers] Size of HTML5 Help file - how to reduce

2018-12-23 Thread Caroline Tabach
Hi

R told me that the HTML 5 help file that I made is too big.

It came out as 15 MB

Currently I have included the screen captures in the help.

I made a new version without most of the screen captures, and it is much
smaller.

1. Do you show the screen captures in help files?
2. Are there any settings in the Frame publisher that can themselves
compress the graphics used in the help file (instead of removing them all)
3. Can you make screen caps as thumbnails?
4. Has anyone else encountered this issue, and have any insights?

Re: [Framers] Just Starting w/FM 2019: Interface

2018-11-01 Thread Caroline Tabach
Each new release only has info about the features in that specific release.

There are a set of on line tutorials about 2019 on the Adobe site.

They also deal with changes in the interface, so should probably provide
the info you need.
However, if you want info about something that changed earlier, you need to
find the release videos from the previous releases.

I made a very big jump in versions. In the end I found that I had to look
at info from each previous release to fully take advantage of some of the
new features introduced.

[Framers] Question about documenting code and 2 paragraph formats that should appear in the same row

2018-10-23 Thread Caroline Tabach
Hi,

I am converting a Word doc with a lot of code to Frame (2017).

Some rows of code are numbered and some are indented.

Would you make another set of tags for code numbered and indented
(different font and type from body)

In addition, there are lines or paragraph where I have both code - in the
paragraph tag - "code" and regular text which should have the style body,
completely mixed in the same line

What is the best way to deal with this?

To make a new paragraph tag for the body text that is run in? (can this be
done)
Or make a character tag for the text that should not be in the "code" tag

Any other tips for documenting code?

Thanks

[Framers] Old Title Info being dragged into the HTML 5 files

2018-10-18 Thread Caroline Tabach
Hi

I think that maybe this problem is slightly connected to the title info
mentioned by Lin.

I made new user guides based on an old template from an old book.

In the Responsive HTML files that I made, the topic names of the Heading 1
is the name of something old that should not appear. This was fixable by
making sure the TOC file appeared in the book file used to create the Help.
BUT, the name of this old user guide appears as the file name for each
Heading 1 HTML topic

i.e. I get a whole lot of HTML files. In each folder one file (the H1 file)
has the name of something old that should not be there.

I opened all of the files by hand and made sure this does not appear in the
document info field.

I saved some of the files as MIF files and searched for this term, but did
not find it.

Does anyone have any idea where this problematic info could have come from
and how to get rid of it?

thanks

[Framers] How to edit MiniTOC as defined on ref page so that only headings will appear in HTML5 Help??

2018-10-17 Thread Caroline Tabach
Frame 2017

I have set up my system to create nice HTML 5 help, with the product look
and feel.

There is one thing I am stuck with, maybe someone has the answer

The PDF file has a mini-TOC for most of the chapters

It is in the form of
<$paranum> <$paratext> on page <$pagenum>

I set this up on the reference page

In the help file itself, I would like to have this Mini-TOC appear as
hyperlinks on each main topic page, but without the variables of the
numbering and page numbers.

These elements are as I said on the reference page, and not part of the
styles (which would be easy to fix if that was the case)

Yesterday I thought that using the MiniTOC in the HTMLTemplate was the
answer, but when I sort of managed to make it work, I saw that it just
gives a list of topics on the same page (Is that correct)?

What I am looking for is how to make a MiniTOC from Frame appear in help
without the extra variables.

Is this possible?

Otherwise the solution, would be to have the regular MiniTOC not be
displayed in the help file, and either have manual X-refs, or make a
different MiniTOC for help files, with conditional text, using a
different set of styles?, which would be a little unwieldy, but would work
permanently.

I would welcome input on this

thanks

[Framers] Using Groups and Folders use case and benefits?

2018-10-11 Thread Caroline Tabach
Hi,

do people have real life examples of how groups and folders are actually
used?

Currently we are only creating PDF files.

How are groups and folders useful?

(i.e. use case and benefits)

thanks for getting back to me.

Are there people with experience with groups?

I will look up those numbering articles and think about either this
suggestion, or the suggestion of using conditional text.

I have to present the ideas to the SMEs next week

Currently the only thing they want to produce here is PDF, so that is an
advantage.

It is always useful to hear about other tools.

[Framers] Advice on slimming down a guide; customized guides per customer??

2018-10-08 Thread Caroline Tabach
Hi,

I have converted the very large Word user guide to FrameMaker. I am using
Unstructured Frame 2017

This is a guide for a product which has general information about how to
use the product at the beginning, and a few chapters with general
information at the end.

The product is made up of 100 "boxes" which belong to 5 families (I am
just calling them boxes for the sake of the example)

The FrameMaker book I made uses only chapters, not volumes, there is a
chapter for each box family, with information about each of the boxes in
that family.

Each customer only needs to user 4 or 5 "boxes", so we want to make user
guides that are smaller and more focused

I have made a book with everything in it, and now I want to show the SME
how we can use Frame to make smaller guides. I am wondering about the best
way to do this.

1. Make 5 books each with one box family in it, which will contain info
about all the boxes in that family as well as the general information. end
users will receive the guide with info about the box family, they will have
info about 15 boxes even if they only bought one

2. Redo the guide that I did and make the box families to be volumes, and
then each box is a chapter. .

This means it will be easy to add or remove boxes from the guide, this also
means it is possible to customize the guides per customers
The company are using heading numbering, so this means redoing all of the
heading of all the paragraph styles, which might get complicated

3. Another idea I had was to set the book up as described above, with a
chapter for each box family, but to have each box as a text inset, and be
able to create user guides per box. Highly customizing this, but means I
don't have to mess with the numbering, but maybe this will make life
complicated

What would you recommend?

Are there advantages and disadvantages of each method?

Thanks for your ideas

Re: [Framers] HTML

2018-10-02 Thread Caroline Tabach
You can change the fonts in the publish configuration.

As mentioned, you must choose fonts that are generally available on
browsers, otherwise the results will look bad.

You often need a machine that does not have your default fonts on it to
test this.

Play with all the possible settings, you can get very good results

[Framers] Best Practice for Master Page Variables for Appendices?

2018-09-17 Thread Caroline Tabach
Hi,

I am trying to work out the best way to do this

I have a book with chapter files and appendix files.

The header uses the following format

Chapter 9: Running H/F 1 - when Chapter is a variable with
Chapter<$chapnum> Running H/F1 is a variable variable
with<$paratext[Heading1]>

For the appendix chapters instead of the tag Heading1 I can use a tag
called AppHeading1

This works very well for me in the Table of Contents (I want the word
Appendix/Chapter to appear as relevant) and is controlled with the
reference page.

However, in this case I need to use different variables for the headers.
So that it will say Appendix A: Writing a book etc (using AppHeading1
instead of Heading1) and the correct variable so it will say Appendix
<$chapnum>

What is the best practice for all this, and for setting up Master pages.?

If I use different variables, either I paste in the different set of
variables manually on my regular "Right" master page, or make a special
master page called Appendix which must be applied as a custom master page

What is the best practice to make everything work well, if you are have a
book with appendices and regular chapters

Thanks

[Framers] Changing Resolution for all imported graphics

2018-09-17 Thread Caroline Tabach
Hi
I am using Frame 2017

I imported screen captures to the user guide (by reference).

They were imported at resolution of 96%

Now we want to change the resolution to 150%

1. Is there any way to automate this?

2. Can Object Properties be used for this? The object properties seemed to
also fix definite dimensions as well as resolution, so did not seem
suitable; can this be overcome?

thanks

[Framers] PDF Job Options - do you customize?

2018-09-12 Thread Caroline Tabach
Do you use the default PDF Job Options?

I make PDFs that are primarily distributed as files.

People print if needed.

Do you use the "Standard" Job options that come with Frame for this?

Many many years ago we customized the Job Options, with downsizing and
various graphic options.

I do not have that file any more.

Is this necessary?

[Framers] Print settings for colors is inconsistent

2018-08-30 Thread Caroline Tabach
Hi,

when I update a book, or try to print it, I receive a message that the
print settings for all sorts of colors is inconsistent.

This occurs both with Frame 2017 and when I opened the files in Frame 2019.

I tried a few times to open one file and then do
import formats/color definitions from that file to all other files in the
book so they would have the same settings, but I still receive this message.

Are there any ideas about how to resolve this issue?

I did not create these colors myself, and we do not use them in particular.

Send

[Framers] Import graphics by reference or by copying

2018-08-26 Thread Caroline Tabach
Hi everyone

I have a question.

As mentioned I am working on converting files from Word to Frame

How important to you think it is to import graphic files by reference and
not by copying.

The graphics all came into the file from Word. I am erasing them and
inserting my files by reference.

I have 2 sets of graphic files, one set are from the company SW, which is
likely to change often and need to be imported by reference, so that i can
make the changes easily.
The other set areof various activities performed from time to time using
Windows utilities or other 3rd party, which are not likely to change.

Importing by reference makes it very easy to deal with GUI that changes,
makes the files smaller and open faster, will it cause any problems to
leave some of the graphics in group 2 as files copied rather than
referenced??

Thanks

by the way, received the link and details about downloading Frame 2019 over
the weekend.

Updating to say that I contacted Adobe and they responded within a short
time, saying that they have forwarded my request to the relevant team.

We shall see what happens
