[Framers] Slightly OT: Adobe FrameMaker ACE program

2017-07-09 Thread D L Reynolds
I’m about half-way through an Adobe Train-the-Trainer program and feeling
motivated re: certifications. But when I search the Adobe site, it seems that
the FrameMaker ACE exam is no longer given, or at least is not listed on the
ACE offerings pages.
https://training.adobe.com/certification/exams.html#p=1

Also, there is now another certification — Adobe Certified Associate — but if
I’m reading it correctly, it’s a lesser certification than ACE. And there’s no
FrameMaker option anyway.

I know some of you out there are ACEs. Can you shed any light?

Many thanks,

First a caveat - I’m still using ID CS6, trying to avoid Adobe’s subscription
model for as long as possible. To the best of my knowledge, these points are
still true but be sure to check.

FM enables you to add variables to running table titles - e.g., “Continued” or
“page x of y,” a feature that doesn’t exist in InDesign. If you bang around on
the web you’ll find discussions of workarounds in ID, but they’re all a bit of
a hassle. I once worked on a publication that contained two tables that ran
300+ pages. The “page x of y” feature was definitely useful.

ID doesn’t distinguish between a table title row and heading rows.

It’s been awhile, so I’ll probably get this about half wrong, but I seem to
recall that table rules are built into the cell styles. This has caused me some
problems in the past. Sorry to be so vague, but that’s as much of it as I
remember.

Hope this helps a little.

Re: [Framers] FrameMaker vs InDesign

2017-06-23 Thread D L Reynolds
I use both FrameMaker and InDesign, love them both. But if the document in
question has a lot of tables, stay with FrameMaker. FrameMaker’s table editor
is far superior to InDesign’s IMO.

I’ve converted hundreds of docs from FrameMaker to InDesign — some of which
shouldn’t have been converted, but the customer is always right. 8-) The degree
of complexity depends on the complexity of the document being converted.

[Framers] OT: ISP recommendations? -- Follow-up

2017-03-03 Thread D L Reynolds
The following information regarding ISPs may or may not be helpful:

Many ISPs are owned by EIG, the parent company of HostGator and Sitelock, so
I’ll be avoiding them. Here is a partial listing of the companies owned by EIG:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Endurance_International_Group

Some ISPs aren’t owned by EIG but partner with Sitelock; I’m avoiding them,
also. https://www.sitelock.com/partner

Mine is a WordPress site, and the WordPress people currently recommend four
hosts for WP sites:
Bluehost (owned by EIG, so they’re out)
DreamHost (I’m currently leaning in this direction)
Flywheel
SiteGround

And if interested, postings from other people who have experienced the same
problem I mentioned can be seen here — and plenty of other places, but this is
a good (if long) summary. I don’t know if the practice described really is
extortion, but it sure feels like it.

[Framers] OT: ISP recommendations?

2017-03-03 Thread D L Reynolds
For about a decade I’ve used HostGator as my ISP and was satisfied until
yesterday — when I received an email from them saying phishing was being hosted
on my site. They shut the site down before notifying me, then recommended that
I contact a company called Sitelock for emergency recovery.

From what I’ve read, Sitelock charges $200 for emergency recovery, and then
requires a six-month monthly service commitment. As it happens, HostGator and
Sitelock are owned by the same company, so I smell a rat (and I’ve found many
similar complaints online). I’ve ftp’d my public_html folder to my hard drive,
so I should have all my files. Next step it to choose another ISP. Any
recommendations?

Many thanks,

Structured FM 10 assistance (paid)

2014-01-28 Thread D L Reynolds
Anyone out there willing and able to provide very short-term structured FM 10
assistance?

I have XML (exported from a database) and a DTD. I have an unstructured FM file
with master pages and table/paragraph/character styles (very few and simple)
that can serve as a template, as well as a sample of what the structured output
should look like.

The data must be formatted as a table:
- Title, with continuation variable
- 1-3 heading rows (probably no spans)
- Multiple columns with stub (leftmost) column formatted differently than the
rest of the body cells

Ultimately, these tables need to be saved as PDFs and printed.

I’m spending way too much time trying to get an EDD that works and hoping
someone out there can assist. If interested and qualified, please respond with
qualifications and hourly rate.

Many thanks,

I recently switched from Captivate to Camtasia because Adobe would have charged

Re: Creative Suite — I, too, have stopped upgrading with CS6 and so have my

I’ve been using Adobe products from the beginning: Photoshop 1, Illustrator 88.
Still have those apps and the original slipcases (remember when software came

Re: Convert from FrameMaker to InDesign

2014-01-10 Thread D L Reynolds
I’ve done A LOT of this, and in my experience there is no easy way to do it —
although I was working with VERY complex files.

The DTP Tools product didn’t work for me, but again — the complexity of the
files may have been too much for their product.

Didn’t try MIF2Go, so can’t comment on that.

Had my best luck doing a lot of preprocessing on the FM file so that
conditional text, etc, could be identified later on, then exported as RTF, then
did a bunch of post processing in InDesign. Not hard, just time consuming.

Let me know if you’d like more info.

Best wishes,

IMHO FM's got an awful steep learning curve for just word processing

For what it's worth, a colleague has created a customized user interface for FM

engineers to use it as if it were a simple word processor, but they can't hose

I can't swear to this, but I think he did the whole thing with changes to the

appreciate your expertise and generosity.

I'm now experiencing a different problem (in a different project),
but one that seems in some way related.

This is a two-color job: black and PMS032. When I create a PDF and
check the separations, the spot color coming from linked
illustrations (Illustrator eps) is handled correctly. But the PMS032
applied directly within FrameMaker is throwing process plates
(Magenta and Yellow).

The similarity between this and my last difficulty is that in both
cases, color applied from within FrameMaker is mishandled; color
specified in other applications (Illustrator) works fine. So...

Do any of you know how to prevent these process plates from being
generated? Or do you know a way to merge them onto the spot plate? I
haven't found a way to do it with Ink Manager. (This job will be
printed from press-ready PDFs.)

The job uses FrameMaker 7.1 on Windows XP Pro.

For what it's worth, this has probably been happening for ages. But
in the past, this client has used a fabulous printer (I'm happy to
supply the printer's name off-line) and I'll bet he quietly fixed
things on his end. But the client is now hoping to save money by
using another printer, and this firm said they couldn't work with the
files and bounced them back to us.

Any advice is deeply appreciated, as always.

Spot color generating process plates: addendum

2008-11-17 Thread D L Reynolds
A quick addendum:

When I specify the following settings from within FrameMaker...
- Print Document Print Separations Separations Setup
- Print as Process: Black
- Print as Spot: PMS032
- Don't Print: everything else

...Then print to separations, the resulting PDF is separated correctly.

But if I then print to a regular PDF, the spot color specified within
FrameMaker still generates process plates. I don't understand this at
all. Am I missing something obvious?

Many thanks,

FrameMaker to PDF color shift problem

2008-11-12 Thread D L Reynolds
I need to use a slate blue color in a manual I'm creating -- rules
and heading text. But no matter what color model I specify in
FrameMaker, I get a garish cyan when the file is converted to PDF.
This is only a problem with elements and text created in FrameMaker.
Linked EPS files and screenshots are working just fine. And the color
looks fine in FrameMaker; it only goes south in the PDF.

For the record, I've tried Pantone spot and process, RGB, web-safe,
you name it. And I just keep getting shades of cyan. I've tried
FrameMaker 7 and 8, same result. I'm using Windows XP and WebWorks
Rasterizer to create the .ps file for distilling. (The Adobe PDF
driver crashes FrameMaker on this machine.) From within Distiller,
I've selected the Leave Color Unchanged option, but no luck.

Has anyone had experience with this sort of problem?

Many thanks,

Importing 3D PDF into FrameMaker

2008-09-24 Thread D L Reynolds
I'm trying to import a 3D file into FrameMaker and having no luck at
all. According to everything I've read...
- the file must be in U3D format
- Acrobat 3D should be used to convert the original CAD file into U3D
format

I've used Acrobat 3D to convert the CAD file, and per instructions in
the Acrobat documentation I've selected the U3D ECMA 1 option from
within the Import tab 3D Format in PDF. A file is generated with a
PDF filetype, and my understanding is that somehow, internally, the
3D data are (or should be) in U3D format.

Once that's completed, I import the resulting PDF into FrameMaker.
- The Imported Graphic Scaling dialog box isn't displayed as the
FrameMaker documentation says it will be.
- Nothing appears in the graphics frame; i.e., there is no preview.
- When I export into PDF format, the image appears but Acrobat 3D
doesn't recognize it as a 3D object.

When I convert the same CAD files directly into PDF, everything works
fine. But this 3D image is part of a formatted data sheet, so I
really need to include it in the FrameMaker file.

I'm using the Technical Communications Suite (Acrobat 3D 8,
FrameMaker 8) and Windows XP. I've tried two different CAD formats:
STEP and SLDPRT, both of which are supported by Acrobat 3D.

Any ideas?

As always, sincere thanks for your time and consideration.

OT: RoboHelp documentation

2008-01-04 Thread D L Reynolds
We ordered two copies of the Adobe Technical Communications Suite, as
well as two sets of documentation. The software arrived before
Thanksgiving, but yesterday we were notified that Adobe had cancelled
production of the documentation.

We've been able to track down most of the manuals online, but we're
stuck when it comes to RoboHelp. We've never used this app before and
really need some guidance. Help files are fine as far as they go, but
we don't need information in spoonfuls -- we need help seeing the big
picture. We need a big honking manual.

There is a link to RoboHelp documentation on Adobe's web site, but
all the docs refer to v.6 and earlier: http://www.adobe.com/support/
robohelp/documentation.html

Another Adobe link leads nowhere: See -- http://www.adobe.com/
support/documentation/en/robohelp/
then click the Adobe RoboHelp 7: Getting Started link. All you get is
an Access Denied page.

Phoning Adobe Customer Support was a total waste of time. I spoke to
several very nice young New Delhi denizens with faux Anglo names, all
of whom were extremely polite and completely clueless (Adobe's fault,
not theirs).

We found and ordered a third-party RoboHelp book from Amazon, but
have no way of assessing quality or completeness. So, can anyone
recommend other resources for learning RoboHelp? (And when it comes
to customer support, is Adobe the new Microsoft?)

Many thanks for your consideration,

Opentype/special characters

2006-02-28 Thread D L Reynolds
Please forgive me if this has been covered a million times...

I'm using FrameMaker 7.1 on Windows XP with Opentype fonts, but I'm
primarily a Macintosh person. It's my understanding that Opentype
expands the Windows character set, but I can't find anything like a
Glyphs palette or a keyboard command that will enable me to enter a
simple "less than or equal" sign without having to resort to the
Symbol font.

Is there a way to coax special characters out of Opentype fonts on
FrameMaker Win?

Many thanks.
