Re: [Framers] Table numbering issue

2020-10-26 Thread Doug
I use the table anchor to enable me to use xrefs to link to the top of
the table. Our captions are below the tables, so if I link to the
caption, the table displays off the top of the screen. This way the
entire table displays on-screen when the user clicks the xref.

If you know another way to ensure the table displays on-screen, I'd
love to hear it.

That was it, thanks. I dunno how I missed that...

Thanks!

[Framers] Table numbering issue

2020-10-26 Thread Doug
My Book has 8 chapters, with tables in chapters 5, 6, and 7 (which are
separate FM documents). My numbering uses the following setup, and it
works great.

Paragraph Format Format
Table Anchor  T::
Table Caption T:Table :

However, if I add tables to any of the chapters 1-4, none of the table
numbers increment. The table in chapter 5 still stays Table 1, and
none of my test tables in chapters 1-4 increment their table numbers
to account for the tables in the previous chapters.

It's almost as if none of the first four FM documents share variable
data with the other FM documents, whereas FM documents 5-7 do share
variable data.

Does this ring a bell with anyone? Hopefully there's something I'm
doing wrong that is obvious to someone...

Thanks!

[Framers] Typical image border issue in HTML5

2020-10-21 Thread Doug
I'm running FrameMaker 2017 on Windows 10 Pro.

When publishing to Resp. HTML5, the borders that I've assigned to the
anchored frames don't show up unless I also put a graphic object into the
AF also, such as a line. I place it behind the image so it won't be seen.
(I mainly use JPG and PNG images.)

If the image is larger in size than the AF, this tends to make one or more
of the sides of the border not display. Usually it's the bottom border
line, below the image, that goes missing.

I usually fix this by using Photoshop to crop out the unneeded section of
the image, to make it the same size as or smaller than the AF.

Today I noticed that I can make the missing border line display merely by
adjusting the height of the AF, without needing to crop the image at all.
One particular image displayed the missing border line if the AF height was
either 120, 123, 126, or 129. It's likely that it would have worked at
other sizes incremented by 3, but that's all I tested.

I have no idea why this works as it does. Just one of Frame's many HTML5
idiosyncrasies, perhaps?

Re: [Framers] Weird spacing in PDF output

2020-09-12 Thread Doug
Experiment by making changes to the source.

For instance, insert Pulse Software before the word "Pulse", and PDF it
again. Observe the results. If the new words display fine, delete
everything after them and PDF it again. Observe the results.

You might be able to fix it, even if you might never discover why.

[Framers] Adobe Job Options

2020-09-11 Thread Doug
Running Frame 2017 on Windows 10.

We use a customized PDF Job Options file.

I started a new project today, and when I went to use FIle > Save as PDF,
the PDF Setup for Selected Files dialog defaults to a Job Option named
Adobe PDF Preset 1.joboptions.jobo instead of my customized Job Options
file.

All my other projects still use the customized file by default. It's only
this one that defaults to this unknown file. I can set it to use the
customized file with two mouse clicks, but I have to fix the Bookmarks by
hand. Very annoying.

Can anyone give me a clue why this is happening? Where are these
customized job options files stored? Why do different projects use
different job option files?

Thanks,

Doug

[Framers] Images make scrolling through a Frame document problematic

2020-07-17 Thread Doug
My Frame documents usually contain a lot of images, usually photos.

I like to work with the zoom set out far enough for me to see both side
margins. When I scroll through the document, Frame momentarily freezes
when an image scrolls into view. After a few of these pauses, if I keep
scrolling, the entire screen will black out and freeze for 2-5 seconds or
so.

Then the screen will display again and my image will be there as expected.

I assume all of this is a memory issue, with buffers filling up and having
to be empties, or somesuch.

My workstation has 16GB of memory, so I'd have thought I wouldn't see
memory problems. I'm running Windows 10 Pro on a Dell OptiPlex 3050,
i5-7500 @ 3.4 GHz, 64 bit.

Is there some setting I can tweak to optimize performance?

Thanks,

Doug

Re: [Framers] Lines

2020-06-08 Thread Doug
---> I made an error in the previous post; below is the corrected version:
<---

1. Draw a line using the Line tool. Set it to 0 points in Height, and the
Width and Top to something arbitrary, say 50 each.
2. Now zoom in close and set the Stroke > Line Width to 10 points.

Notice that the line width expands both up and down.

That's annoying. I would expect the stroke width to expand down, not both
up and down.

Why? Because now that the line is 10 points in stroke width, the top of
the line is no longer at 50 pts. It's at 45 points. And the implication
is that even a 1 point wide stroke width line set at 50 Top actually set to
49.5 and not really 50.

This makes using the Top field to set the line's position on the page much
less reliable.

Is there something I'm missing? It doesn't make sense that one field's
value would make the value of other fields inaccurate.

even a 1 point high line set at 50 actually set to 49.5 and not really 50.

This makes using the Top field to set the line's position much less
reliable.

Is there something I'm missing? It doesn't make sense that one field's
value would make the value of other fields inaccurate.

[Framers] Bookmarks when saving as PDF

2020-04-30 Thread Doug
Frame 2017 here on Windows 10

I have two projects, each with their own Book and FM files.

When I use the Save As PDF menu option, Project A produces the output
correctly: none of the bookmarks are expanded in the Navigation pane;only
the root bookmarks show.

When i use the Save As PDF menu option with Project B, however, all of the
bookmarks end up expanded in the resulting PDF. I don't want that.

Part of the problem, I suspect, is related to the PDF Setup in Distiller.
On the Bookmarks tab that displays during the Save As PDF process, the
field Bookmarks Expanded through Level is set to "Default" and it cannot be
changed. I should be able to change it (to NONE) but it always reverts to
Default. The Default apparently is the same as ALL.

I use a customized Distiller job options file, of course. I looked in the
settings or that options file but didn't see any way to customize the
default.

Note that if I add an FM file from Project A to the Project B book file,
the bookmarks in the resulting PDF are all compressed as I like. If i
remove this inappropriate FM file from the Project B book file, the
bookmarks default back to expanded.

I just now noticed that if I use the keyboard to type the number 0 into the
Bookmarks Expanded through Level field, it produces a PDF with none of the
bookmarks expanded, which is good.

But I still can't use the mouse to select None (or All, for that matter).

Re: [Framers] Best way to import/add select paragraph formats?

2020-03-27 Thread Doug
I start with a blank document. I create the format, then save it in a
folder reserve for formats. I name the file based on the format name, and
I append a (p) or (c) to the filename to remind me whether it's a paragraph
format or a character format.

Later, when I need to import the format into a document, I just open the
template file and use the File > Import > Formats function.

Is there a reason others don't do it this way?

I've tried the following settings, and neither help:

I've even replaced all Layout.css files under C:\Program

not use my CSS during the Publish process.

I don't know where FM is getting its Resp. HTML5 values from.

[Framers] Layout.CSS in Responsive HTML5

Re: [Framers] Resp. HTML issue

2020-03-11 Thread Doug
Whelp, after 30 minutes on the phone with Adobe, we got it fixed at the
cost of removing my existing FM profile and starting out with a new one.

Very annoying.

Basically something became corrupted in the profile, which is located here:

C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\FrameMaker

My profile was in a folder named 14. Renaming this to something else makes
Frame create a new one when you next restart it.

I was able to restore my PDF preferences just by specifying my Print
preferences in the Distiller dialog. Restoring my HTML customizations was
only a little more complicated. I made sure the Publish to HTML process
was working soundly using a new default STS file. Then I closed Frame,
replaced the default STS with a copy of my custom STS, then restarted
Frame. Seamless so far.

At least my STS file didn't become corrupt.

Still annoying.

[Framers] Resp. HTML issue

2020-03-11 Thread Doug
Frame has started to misbehave (again).

This time it happens when I use the Publish functionality to create
Responsive HTML. To reproduce this, do the following:

1. In an open document, click File > Publish.
2. Click the Change Settings button on the Publish dialog.
3. On the drop-down menu that displays, click Edit. the Publish Settings
dialog displays.
4. Click anywhere in the Edit dialog.

At this point the Edit dialog will vanish, and the main Frame window will
become unresponsive. You can't even click the X button in the corner to
close it. You have to right-click the task bar button (or use the Task
Manager) to kill it.

I thought I could fix it by Frame regenerate the STS file, but I did that
and there was no change.

Ideas?

[Framers] CMYK color matching from InDesign to Frame

2020-02-03 Thread Doug
I've been tasked to develop a template in Frame that uses the same CMYK
color set as a document someone else created in InDesign. I'm seeing a big
problem here.

When I define a color in Frame by entering the CMYK code, the color that
displays on-screen isn't the same as the color in InDesign, even though the
CMYK code is identical.

However, if I enter the RGB equivalent code in Frame, the color displays
accurately on-screen (on some colors--others are still off).

In short, RGB codes in InDesign usually display the same shade in Frame,
but CMYK codes never display in Frame the same as they display in InDesign.

Can someone explain why this is happening, and what I can do to resolve it?

Thanks,

Doug

Re: [Framers] FrameMaker 2020

2020-01-16 Thread Doug
What I'd like to see in a new version of FM is a non-modal information
dialog that displays all of the characteristics of the currently selected
frame.

Currently I have to use separate information windows for anchor frames and
object properties, for example. They are non-modal, so that's good, but I
don't have the convenience of looking at the same location to view the data
I'm interested in, since they are separate dialogs.

What's worse is that both text frames and graphic frames use modal
windows. I have to jump through some hoops to view their data, and because
they are modal, I can't use ANY other part of Framemaker unless I close
their Properties dialogs first.

I'm using FM 2017 BTW.

Computers are supposed to make our jobs easier. A single non-modal
information dialog is one way to do so.

I agree with Lin. Use conditional tags for the authors.

Re: [Framers] Clickable enlargeable image

2019-12-31 Thread Doug
You might be able to configure the publishing process to allow a larger
image size.

1. Click File > Publish.
2. Click Change Settings > Edit.
3. On the Style Mapping tab, click Image Settings.
4. Under Maximum Dimensions, mark the Width and Height check boxes and
specify the desired maximum image size.

You could also/alternatively try setting Preferred Dimensions > Scale.

Re: [Framers] Condition expression for conditional text

2019-12-23 Thread Doug
Lynne,

I just now tried out your suggestion using the original version of my
chapter. The results were just as you predicted, everything displayed as I
had hoped. The "40" and not("PDF") did the trick; it is the kind of
expression I originally had in mind though the wording hadn't occurred to
me.

Thanks!

Re: [Framers] Condition expression for conditional text

2019-12-20 Thread Doug
Lin,

Looks like that works. I had been trying to apply multiple condition tags
to the HTML (and PDF) sections, but that wasn't working. What worked was
applying a single condition tag that was named for the multiple conditions.

For instance, instead of applying the following four tags:

"40"+"41"+"42"+"HTML"

I applied the single tag:

"40,41,42,HTML"

(and for the PDF I applied "40,41,42,PDF" )

That worked as I had hoped, I even was able to use the Show As Per
Condition section instead of the Show As Per Expression section.

Your help was essential. Thanks.

[Framers] Condition expression for conditional text

2019-12-20 Thread Doug
Things are getting complicated.

I'm currently editing a chapter that is common to four books. The books
are 40, 41, 42, and 44. Some content isn't applicable to book 44, so I've
set up a condition tag named "Not 44".

The problematic content sections use the tags (Not 44+PDF) and (Not
44+HTML), since some content is PDF-only and other content is HTML only.
Needless to say, these bits of content are applicable to 40, 41, and 42
(but not 44).

Is using "Not 44" a bad condition? I feel it must be because when I Show
As Per Expression it shows both the (Not 44+PDF) and (Not 44+HTML)
sections, I assume because the expression says in include "Not 44"
content. It's as if the parentheses don't mean anything.

Some content is unique to each book (4 condition possibilities)
Some is common to some books
Some is common to all books
Some is PDF
Some is HTML

Ideas? Thanks.

Re: [Framers] Captions

2019-12-13 Thread Doug
My shop's standard is to (sigh) put the captions below the objects. My
workaround for this is to put a xref link above the object. This works
well, except the object name/number in the xref link doesn't update
automatically if the caption changes. (This is the reason for one of my
feature requests I've submitted.)

I was hoping I'd overlooked an easy solution to ensure my caption
names/numbers in the xref links would stay updated automagically.

[Framers] Captions

2019-12-13 Thread Doug
Is there an industry standard or best practice to follow when deciding
where to place the caption for an image, table, or equation? The obvious
choices are either above the object or below it.

Also, if you place your captions below, how do you deal with making
cross-references to the caption? In my experience the caption displays at
the top of the screen after the link jump. which puts the object out of
sight above the top of the screen in this case.

It almost seems as if FrameMaker expects users to put captions above the
object.

Re: [Framers] Frame Properties

2019-12-12 Thread Doug
Thanks for the response.

Part of the problem is that both text frames and graphic frames use modal
Properties dialogs. This means I'm not able to save a workspace while they
are on-screen. This is unlike the images themselves, and anchored frames,
which use modeless dialogs; I can leave those on-screen all the time.

I guess what I need is a way to display a modal dialog in a modeless
manner. It seems to be such an arbitrary distinction, text/graphic frames
vs. image/anchored frames.

In this respect Framemaker seems to be quite behind the standard set by
other Adobe apps, like InDesign, Illustrator, etc.

[Framers] Frame Properties

2019-12-11 Thread Doug
I want the Properties to display whenever I select a frame. I don't want
to press Shft+F6 every time. Ideally I'd like a dialog to always be on the
screen, passively displaying the properties as I select each frame.

Is there a mod/script/etc for this?

Thanks,

[Framers] Dotted line

2019-11-25 Thread Doug
I want to make a line object that uses dots. All of the presets use
rectangles, squares, or other blocky figures. Does Frame support making
lines made of round dots?

For that matter, can I make a line end in a circle? I see how to put
arrowheads on the ends, but I'm unsure how to make a line end in an open or
closed circle.

Thanks!

[Framers] Opening FM 2019 documents in FM 2017

2019-10-23 Thread Doug
Is it possible to do this? I just had some 2017 documents translated for
me and when I open them in my FM 2017 it says:

Although XXX appears to be a FrameMaker document, it can't be opened with
tihs release of the product.

Is there an add-on or something?

I can accept compliant, but since complaint modifies RS-485 (doesn't it?)
then a hyphen is required linking the two. And we're back to square one.

Re: [Framers] Entering codes for special characters/symbols

2019-04-03 Thread Doug
Thanks for the idea on variables. I tried it out and it works great. I
don't like that I have to import these variables into future documents, but
I will if I need to. That's why I was hoping to add the symbols to a menu,
so they'd always be there for any FM document. I got that working, but
only for codes that are 2 characters long. I think there's a way for
longer codes but I need to read Klaus' info a bit more.

[Framers] Entering codes for special characters/symbols

2019-04-02 Thread Doug
I've been working on special characters lately, determining the best way to
enter them is pretty confusing.

Some dialogs require a \x before the character code, others require just a
\, while others require \u. Some codes are 2 characters, while others
require 4 characters, all for the same symbol. Worse, some of the code
charts I've seen don't apply accurately to FrameMaker.

Can someone point me to a chart of the character codes and how they need to
be entered? One that is accurate for Frame? I feel like I'm trying to
chart a river that has already been mapped.

Thanks,

Doug

[Framers] HTML 5 and hanging indents

2019-03-29 Thread Doug
My numbered lists use an 18 pt tab and Left indent, so they line up great
in FM and in PDF. Not so in HTML. The hanging indent is 1 or 2 points
short, so it hangs too far toward the margin.

Is there no way to fix this? I've been playing with the settings in STS
file for 30 minutes and nothing works.

Thanks,

Doug

[Framers] Brain dead on a Wednesday

2019-02-06 Thread Doug
I have multiple books sharing a set of chapters using the text-inset
functionality. This set of shared FM files exist in their own folder,
separate from the book files. All of the FMs, shared or not, populate
their footers using a variable that contains the book's name.

I'm feeling a bit brain-dead today so I can't recall the proper way that
the variable in the footer gets updated the next time I use that common set
with a different book.

I've already clicked Update Book but that didn't change the footer variable
in the text insets. I know I can manually import variables from the book
into the text insets, but that means I'd have to do that every time I
change books.

Am I forgetting the proper way to do it, or is that it?

Thanks!

[Framers] Unclickable Xref

2019-01-24 Thread Doug
In the body text of one document I refer to a figure on the same page,
using language something like this: See Figure 10 below.

However, I don't want to enter the figure number in the body text because
the actual number might change in the future. So it makes sense to use a
variable for the number. Normally I'd use a cross reference for this, but
that would make the variable a clickable link. Since the image is on the
same page, I don't need (or want) the variable to be clickable. I just
want the number to update automagically.

Is there a way to accomplish this in Frame?

Thanks!

Re: [Framers] Any feedback on FM Publish Tools in 19?

2019-01-11 Thread Doug
The HTML5 results looks great, but it my experience it takes a LOT of
massaging to get it looking how you want it. My gripes:

1. Too often bordered images in the FM will display in the HTML without
borders.
2. *.AI files with borders in the FM cannot have borders in the HTML unless
you also place a non-AI image in the same AF (hidden, behind the AI).
3. If you use the HTML5 settings to put borders around images (instead of
using Object Styles) then even equations will have borders. (Fine if
that's what you want, but...)
4. On seeming random occasions the STS file will become corrupted and,
unless you have a backup of it, all of your customizations will be lost to
you.
5. Some fonts used in the FM files don't play nice in the HTML, forcing you
to make changes to your font choices.
6. Table column widths aren't always reproduced faithfully. Often I've had
to use non-breaking spaces to force columns to be as wide in the HTML as
they are in the FM.
7. There is no side head in HTML, so anything you place there in the FM
will be moved to the main column, usually with poor results.

One good thing: you can republish your HTML without having to close the
original in your browser tab. This is different from the PDF, where it
complains if the original PDF is still open in Acrobat.

I concur with Michael, in that the serial comma it is sometimes necessary

[Framers] Unresolved Xref

2019-01-04 Thread Doug
I have a text inset FM file that is used in many different books, so it
contains a good bit of conditional text. It also contains cross references
to other chapters in one of these books. I have these Xrefs marked as
conditional as well, and they are always hidden unless I want to view
conditions for that particular book.

However, when I change the condition view and click Update Book for any of
the other books, the Update process generates Unresolved Xref errors in the
Log file. Clicking the links in the log file opens the text inset, but
using a Find Unresolved Xrefs results in nothing returned. If I reset the
condition view to the referred book, the unresolved xref displays in the
inset.

If you can follow all of that, I have to ask: why are the
conditionally-marked Xrefs processed by the Update Book procedure? They
are marked as Hidden, after all.

Thanks!

[Framers] Hypertext Named Destinations in HTML5

2018-12-19 Thread Doug
I'm specifying named destinations in my FM documents and Gotolink commands
to navigate to them. When I publish to HTML5 they work fine, except the
entire sentence becomes a clickable link where the Gotolink was placed. I
want to limit the clickability to one or two continguous words.

I thought I had this nailed the other day, but it's not working as I'd
hoped. Any advice?

Re: [Framers] Extracting images

2018-12-14 Thread Doug
This issue is resolved, thanks to you all.

I achieved my first acceptable result by dragging and dropping the image
from Word into Illustrator, then exporting to PNG at 1200 PPI.

Then I tried Fred's suggestion to print to PDF. That worked better, and
the image was even better.

Finally I tried Klaus' suggestion to change the DOCX into a ZIP. The image
was in EMF format in the ZIP file, and in Frame it looked the best yet.
Plus, it's a lot more convenient and orderly to simply rename the DOCX to
ZIP.

I've known about saving to HTML and even print screening a zoomed up image,
but neither preserved the image resolution. Plus, saving to HTML resulted
in my image not being put into EMF format. Instead it was in EMZ format,
which I'm not able to extract the EMF from.

Thanks again to Klaus, and to everyone else!

[Framers] Extracting images

2018-12-14 Thread Doug
What's the best way to extract images from Word or from Frame that are
embedded and not inserted by reference?

I have one particular image that is composed of detailed line art, about an
inch wide by 6 inches high. I loaded the DOC into Frame and the detail is
still sharp and clear, but all attempts to get extract it to an image file
on disk have resulted in a loss of sharpness/clarity.

Ideas?

Re: [Framers] Graphics in help move when conditional

2018-12-11 Thread Doug
Caroline,

When I set my AF to Below Current Line > Left, they always display left
aligned in my HTML5.

You might check your Image Settings in your Publisher ( File > Publish >
Change Settings button > Edit > Style Mapping > Image Settings ). Your
Margin settings might not be set to zero.

[Framers] Find/Change history

2018-12-04 Thread Doug
I'm using the Find/Change dialog to search for markers. I select Marker -
Of Type: and then click the down arrow at the end of the blank field below
that. I'm presented with a history of my searches.

Is there a way to clear this history?

Thanks!

[Framers] File storage best practice

2018-11-29 Thread Doug
I'm facing the challenge of organizing the file structure of dozens of
documents and their respective imported graphics. What's are the best
practices in this regard? I'm inclined to maintain an Images folder with
separate sub-folders for each document's graphics, and another sub-folder
for graphics that are common to multiple documents.

Where I worked before we stored images in a sub-folder below the document's
FM folder, but I'm leaning away from that approach since it complicates
things when you are scanning images outside of Frame. And other reasons,
of course.

Thanks,

Doug

[Framers] An easy one

2018-11-02 Thread Doug
Take an existing multi-page document that contains only Right and Left
master pages.

1. View the Master Pages.
2. Add a new text frame to one master page and give it a unique flow tag
(let's say ZZ), and mark the Autoconnect checkbox.
3. Add a new text frame to the other master page and give it the same flow
tag (ZZ in this case), and mark the Autoconnect checkbox.
4. View Body pages and add text to the new ZZ text frame. Add enough to
make it add text to the ZZ frame in the next page.

When I do this, Frame inserts new blank pages to house the overflowing
text. I would have thought it would have put the overflowing text into the
ZZ frame on the subsequent existing page.

Even though they are both marked for Autoconnect on the master pages, the
Right and Left ZZ frames appear not to be connected to each other. This is
unlike the preset A text frames, which definitely have connected Right/Left
text frames.

What I want to do is remove all of my auto-numbered image captions from the
A flow and put them into their own flow.

Ideas?

Thanks!

[Framers] Conditional text & publishing to HTML5

2018-11-01 Thread Doug
I have conditional text in a text frame, and the text frame is inside an
anchored frame. The condition hides the text if I publish to HTML5. When I
set the book to activate this condition, the text is hidden if I open the
FM document in Frame. However, when I publish to HTML5 the text is not
hidden in the resulting HTML5 file. It seems the HTML5 publishing process
ignores conditions if the conditioned text is inside a text frame inside an
anchored frame.

If the text frame is not inside an anchored frame the HTML5 processing
respects the condition and hides/displays it just fine.

Is this a bug?

[Framers] Publish to Responsive HTML5

2018-10-24 Thread Doug
I'm seeing an issue where figures with borders in Frame lose their borders
when I publish to HTML5 format. A common characteristic of these figures
is in the Facets field, on the Object Properties dialog, they have the
following:

FrameVector
PNG

Other figures, which have "PDF" as their only value in the Facet field,
usually have their borders display as expected in HTML5. Though some lose
their bottom border, for some odd reason.

Ideas?

Thanks,

Doug

[Framers] Shrinkwrap

2018-10-22 Thread Doug
When I use the shrinkwrap shortcut, my anchored frames change to At
Insertion Point, which hoses their position on the page. I seem to recall
that there was a way to customize the shortcut so it would leave the
Anchoring Position value unchanged.

If I'm not mis-remembering, what is the method?
