That’s one of the reasons I switched to Madcap Flare. It’s an exponentially
better authoring tool.

Re: [Framers] Frame vs InDesign

2021-11-18 Thread Gillian Flato
Frank,

InDesign is for fluffy, glossy, shiny marketing slicks. Frame is a workhorse
for Tech Pubs.

I suggest that you make a table:

| Feature | Frame | InDesign | Purpose
-
Conditional Text | X | | Required for
write once, publish many
Variables   |  X ||
Enhances consistency and accuracy
etc.

Lay it out for them. List all of the features that you require and which
software contains the feature. Also explain what the feature is for.

Good Luck,

Re: [Framers] How would you approach this? Listing New Stuff

2020-02-17 Thread Gillian Flato
Create a condition for the new stuff.
Tag everything that’s new with the condition.
Make it a color, like black lettering on a yellow background.
Give the SMEs the doc with the conditions on and color showing.

Then they just have to go through the guide and only read what’s highlighted
with the condition.

Look in the reference pages. That’s what governs the TOC. Make sure the TOC
settings for the left and right page are set the same. Also, make sure they are

[Framers] Numbered headings in TOC

2018-05-17 Thread Gillian Flato
My headings throughout my guide are numbered. I want the numbering to reflect
in the TOC. I have the numbering working after the chapter number but not for
the chapter number.

So what I mean is that in the TOC I have the following:

1 Chapter 1
1.1 Heading 1
1.1.1 Heading 2
1.1.1.1 Heading 3

2 Chapter 2
1.1 Heading 1
1.1.1 Heading 2
1.1.1.1 Heading 3

So within each chapter in the guide, the numbering is perfect but in the TOC,
it doesn’t recognize the proper chapter number.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Gillian

[Framers] TCS Suite 2017 - MAJOR BUG

2017-04-01 Thread Gillian Flato
I opened up Robohelp in TCS 2017 to import my Frame book and chapter
files and create a help file. When I tried importing or linking my Frame files,
I got an error message saying that Frame was not installed. Obviously it was,
they both installed with the TCS installation. I searched on Adobe forums and
found that others were having this problem too. Adobe’s temporary solution is
to reinstall Frame 2015 on your system. They claim they’ll have a bug fix out
next month.

How did Adobe QA miss this? This is a critical, show stopper bug. How the hell
did they not catch this?

Unbelievable.

I think you can export it as a U3D file and import that. It’s been awhile but I

I have used unstructured Frame for 15 years. I am an advanced user.

I have used DITA for 3 with Oxygen. We outsourced writing our scripts.

Now I have to decide if I want to use Frame unstructured or structured for a
new project. There are no legacy docs.

Re: Flare vs DITA

2015-04-13 Thread Gillian Flato
Thanks everyone.

Sorry I wasn’t clear. I’ve used DITA for about two years authoring with Oxygen
and EasyDITA. I outsourced my script writing to a third party. That’s the
problem with DITA. To get the docs and help to look professional, you have to
outsource script writing and that’s expensive.

I was looking for cheaper alternatives. I have used DITA-FMx and I may go that
route.

I just wanted to know of Flare was a better alternative to structured Frame
with DITA-FMx

Thanks
Gillian

Consultants to convert from unstructured Frame to DITA

2013-07-04 Thread Gillian Flato
Does anyone know of any consultants or companies that will convert a company
from unstructured Frame to DITA, using structured Frame. Meaning, create
conversion tables, DTDs, EDDs, etc.

Thanks,

RE: Translating FM files into Japanese

2013-06-30 Thread Gillian Flato
Stephen,

Trados format is simply saving the files, in Frame, to RTF or MIF. Both formats
can be imported to Trados. What he could be charging you for is desktop
publishing. After he translates the content, he will have to massage it to look
good in Frame. Japanese characters are extremely different than English so they
take up different spaces on a page and have a different orientation.

Rather than hire one individual, I would recommend hiring a professional
translation vendor. I think you'll get a better price and higher quality than
from an individual. A translation vendor usually has a QA team with linguists
on it who will proofread the translation before it gets back to you.

Subject: Translating FM files into Japonese

Hi,

We have located a translator in Japan to translate a 300-page training booklet
written in English. The document is very largely table based with typically an
image in row 1 and the caption underneath in row 2 with straddled narrow
columns containing arrows to show a sequence of actions.

The translator is charging reasonable translation costs and then there is an
additional 12$/page cost because the files are from FrameMaker. When we
questioned that cost, he asked if we could provide files in Trados format.
Maybe he is not familiar with FrameMaker files.

Anyway, I find this strange as in the past I have always provided FM files and
the company doing the translation took care of everything else on their side. I
received my Fm files translated into the target language from which I made PDFs.

Can anyone familiar with translating FM files explain why the individual is
requesting files in Trados format? Can that be done - just pay a company to
generate Trados files from FM files?

Many thanks (cold and wet here in Quebec City at 10 Celcius),

As a fallback option to online help, it's probably a good idea to download the
help file as a PDF (it makes a great user manual, btw). Since the PDF has the
revision date in the footer you can update your version if a new revision is
released. Such a search should be easy in the PDF.

T his is troubling, and so one message is buy the CS software on
CD/DVD while you still can. A number of my friends, most connected
with academic institutions, are doing that.

I expect Adobe is attempting to have everyone on the same page as
regards these applications so that one set of help files defines the
 current state
of an application. This would help a lot in terms of expected outcomes
when using the product. However, it requires a constant state of
reeducation as new features are added and different ways of handling things
 are introduced.
Not that we don't have to deal with this already, but at least we know
if we do something in a given version, it is going to work in a way
that we already are familiar with.

As for extending this the current version of the app beyond the
bounds of the Creative Suite, I rather doubt that Adobe will do that
anytime soon. If they have their finger on the pulse of their users
they must realized that, for instance, in the medical device industry,
all tools used to produce documentation must be validated. It would be
impossible  (and expensive!) to validate a moving target as the apps
were continually being improved and the former version made
 unavailable.

I have just heard a rumor that the CS Suite is going to available in
future only on an SaaS basis, by subscription. TCS/FrameMaker could follow?

I do wonder whether the accountants that run large corporates like
Adobe understand how important their software is to the countless
thousands of freelances who have to scrape every last penny to buy it
 - but at least then they own something, not vapor that goes phut as
soon as you stop paying for it.

For the last two decades FrameMaker, Illustrator, Acrobat and
Dreamweaver have been the rocks underpinning what I do. I'm far less
 sure about the future, though.

RE: Frame 11 on MacBook Pro?

You cannot run Frame 11 directly on a Mac. You CAN download VMWare Fusion,
create a Windows VM on the MAC and install Frame 11 on the Windows VM. That's
how my MAC is set up. VMWare Fusion works like a champ!

Hi, all-

Is anyone else running Frame 11 on a MacBook Pro? If so, how did you get it to
install? I am having trouble. I used to run Frame 7 on my old MacBook, so know
it has worked in the past. I was able to download the trial version and have
Parallels running. However when I install, it gets about 40% complete and gives
me an error about a file not extracting properly from the archive and quits. I
have tried re-downloading multiple times. I've tried moving all the files to an
Explorer window.

Any other ideas? Please don't say move to a PC - that isn't happening. New Mac,
Windows XP.

Cross-posted this to the FrameMaker LinkedIn page too.

Thanks!
Kristy

Frame 11 on MacBook Pro?

2013-05-13 Thread Gillian Flato

You cannot run Frame 11 directly on a Mac. You CAN download VMWare Fusion,
create a Windows VM on the MAC and install Frame 11 on the Windows VM. That's
how my MAC is set up. VMWare Fusion works like a champ!

Subject: Frame 11 on MacBook Pro?

Thanks!
Kristy

Hi Alison,

So far, the only response has been from someone who uses LiveCycle Designer for
forms but has no experience with it for ecommerce. Like you, I use Acrobat
security for PDFs to prevent changing the docs or copying the content to
clipboard, but it cannot prevent copying the entire file. For instance, Company
Z has in the past purchased 200 PDF versions of a book of regulatory standards.
My client wants to prevent Company Z from simply making copies of the PDF
instead of buying all 200 copies. Multiply that by thousands of ecommerce
customers to understand the potential revenue that can be lost.

My client also wants to begin selling individual standards in addition to books
of standards, much like IEEE does with its Xplore Digital Library Subscription
Service
(http://www.ieee.org/publications_standards/publications/subscriptions/ieee_standards_online_subscription_information.pdf).

I have no clue where to begin to research how to accomplish the DRM for this,
but I know it is not something in a Technical Writer's general tool kit.
Several years ago I read about dongles, encryption, and password management
systems, but from a user's perspective they are a burden. I want to find a
resource/service that makes it easy to purchase and download a PDF and
hard/impossible to copy the PDF.
Minimally, I'd like to be able to tell my client how other companies do this;
if it is impossible to protect the PDF, then at least he'll know he's in good
company.

If anyone knows of other solutions to accomplish this, I'd appreciate your
insight. I'm treading way outside my skillset here but would like to be able to
give my client some basic direction. I wanted to ask fellow Framers first; then
I'll move on to the LiveCycle forum or whatever direction you folks point me in.

Right now I just use standard Adobe Acrobat security for my Frame

Is there a way to use the 12 built-in Running H/F variables in FrameMaker to
pull in text based on paragraph tags that appear only in other documents within
the book?

For example, it'd be nice if I could define – in the footer of each chapter in
a book – the Running H/F variables to pull in the document title, product name,
and version number based on what appears on the book's title page (based on
paragraph tags that are used only in the title page file).

Or, is the only way to set up those kinds of book-wide variables to define our
own variables in one file and import them to all the other files in the book?

Me too, same scenario. I am going to scour the house for the CD. But I have
moved twice since the install. I have not called (don't have time for that).
Long term customer using their professional products home and work. I have
licenses for everything.

It was their update that caused the problem and they could do an update to
solve the problem (because my work installs had the same problem and they did
have a solution that didn't involve media). It is irresponsible and frustrating.

All,

I am posting to this list hoping that someone from Adobe is reading this and
will step up to the plate. I purchased a copy of Adobe Acrobat Pro Extended 9
over 2 1/2 years ago. I purchased a disk from Adobe. The disk got packed in a
recent move and is in storage and I cannot get to it. I have contacted Adobe
for a replacement download link or disk. I have the valid license number and
order number. Adobe is refusing. They say that they only thing that they can do
is purchase an upgrade from them. Why should I have to purchase an upgrade if I
have already purchased a copy? Adobe said that is was my fault because I
purchased a disk and had I purchased a download link instead, that I could
access that link from my account and all would be OK. So, Adobe gives you an
option of purchasing a disk, but doesn't tell you that if you lose it or
misplace it that you're screwed - that really you should use only the downlink
link option? Certainly, I can't be the only one who has run into this issue
before and I don't make this a habit. This is one misplaced disk in like 17
years of purchasing Adobe products.

Here's the rub . . .they willingly give me a link to a site for downloading
updates to Acrobat 9, but not a link to the initial installation?

I am just so flippin' sick and tired of Adobe's nonchalance about customer
service and how they absolutely loved telling me that I had to spend more money
w/ them for them to help me.

Thanks for the list! It will help me during my evaluations soon. An addition to
your list:

"easyPDF" from BCL Technologies ($29.95)
http://www.pdfonline.com/easypdf/pdf-printer/

And I think, but not sure, that Pdf995 costs ($9.95) to get "without a sponsor
page" ... all their tools cost this, hence the "995"
in the name. :) Their "PdfEdit995" and "PdfSignature995" products adds the

I apologize if this is off topic, but here is a list of Acrobat alternatives.
(Please feel free to send me corrections or updates.)

Free:

- A free plug-in is available for Word 2007; comes with 2010

- Bullzip PDF Printer

- PDF995

- PrimoPDF

- CutePDF
   www.acrosoftware.com/Products/CutePDF/Printer.asp

- Create PS file using any PS printer, then use GSview to convert to
PDF (GSview requires GhostScript, also free)

Not Free (prices are as of Sep 27, 2012):

- PDF Fusion ($49.99)
   www.corel.com/corel/product/index.jsp?pid=prod4100140
Creates bookmarks and links from Word.

- Nitro Pro ($119.99)
   www.nitropdf.com
Creates bookmarks and links from Word.

- Nuance PDF Converter Pro ($99.99)

- Jaws PDF Creator ($64)
   www.jawspdf.com/products.html
Creates bookmarks and links from Word, but does not support
Windows 7; probably not Windows 8 either.

Thanks for the list! It will help me during my evaluations soon. An addition to
your list:

easyPDF from BCL Technologies ($29.95)
http://www.pdfonline.com/easypdf/pdf-printer/

And I think, but not sure, that Pdf995 costs ($9.95) to get without a sponsor
page ... all their tools cost this, hence the 995
in the name. :) Their PdfEdit995 and PdfSignature995 products adds the
capability to add combine/extract pages, encryption, etc.

I apologize if this is off topic, but here is a list of Acrobat alternatives.
(Please feel free to send me corrections or updates.)

Free:

- A free plug-in is available for Word 2007; comes with 2010

- Bullzip PDF Printer

- PDF995

- PrimoPDF

- CutePDF
   www.acrosoftware.com/Products/CutePDF/Printer.asp

- Create PS file using any PS printer, then use GSview to convert to
PDF (GSview requires GhostScript, also free)

Not Free (prices are as of Sep 27, 2012):

- PDF Fusion ($49.99)
   www.corel.com/corel/product/index.jsp?pid=prod4100140
Creates bookmarks and links from Word.

- Nitro Pro ($119.99)
   www.nitropdf.com
Creates bookmarks and links from Word.

- Nuance PDF Converter Pro ($99.99)

- Jaws PDF Creator ($64)
   www.jawspdf.com/products.html
Creates bookmarks and links from Word, but does not support
Windows 7; probably not Windows 8 either.

Perhaps the most elegant way to use the variables method is to save the
definitions as a MIF fragment and eliminate any chance of mucking anything else
in your files.

Tim,
In your variables definition, place the following at the beginning of your
running header:

$monthname $year

Using this method, Frame reads the month name from your computer and you never

Hi All,

We're in the process of starting to use FM10 (as part of Adobe TCS3.5) to
create user guides and (via TCS3.5 RoboHelp 9) online help. One concern we
have is, in FrameMaker, how to handle a 'For more information see:' list of
links to other related help topics we currently have at the bottom of each help
topic. The only way I can think of is to include a 'For more information see:'
section in the FM template and deploy that (suitably completed and
conditionally text-tagged) at the end of each perceived 'help' section in the
FM file.

Any thoughts or suggestions for a more elegant solution would be much
appreciated.

Subject: TCS: Frame to Robo Cross Refs: Conversion Unpredictable

Hello,

I'm using FrameMaker 11 and RoboHelp 10 in Adobe Technical Communication Suite
(TCS) 4. My FrameMaker book is linked to RoboHelp.

Assume I have a cross ref like this in Frame:

See ABC on page 101.

RoboHelp is supposed to convert the cross ref into a hyperlink like this:

See ABC.

Most of my cross-references are converted correctly, but some are not. (The on
page 101 is still there in RoboHelp and the generated WebHelp project.)

In Frame, two references may use the same cross reference format... but
RoboHelp converts the one cross ref OK but not the other. In fact, I've even
copied a cross ref and pasted it into another location in the Frame file. The
original cross ref converts OK, but the copied one does not!

Anyone else encountered this problem? Any solutions? Thanks much.

Keith

I have a bunch of FrameMaker 7 files that currently go through WebWorks 2003 to
get turned into online help.

One of the sticking points of moving them to the current version of FrameMaker
is getting an online help solution that will work with special marker tags that
we've added to tell WebWorks 2003 where to break pages.

We aren't sure whether to go with RoboHelp, WebWorks ePublisher, or something
else altogether. Any opinions? With an already overloaded group that's about
to get smaller, we need a quick and (relatively) easy solution, preferably one
that doesn't require us to do anything special to the FM files beyond moving
them to the current version.

Hi Gillian...

As I'm sure you're aware, I'm a big proponent of using Frame for DITA
authoring, but I do try to remain reasonably objective when comparing it to
other DITA tools.

The big thing that sets TCS apart from other DITA authoring tools is that in
addition to authoring, it provides a more complete publishing solution for both
PDF and various online formats. Other authoring tools will likely bundle the
DITA-OT as the publishing tool, which can work quite well, if you've got XSLT
developers at your disposal. The HTML-based formats aren't too much work to
customize, but if PDF is an important deliverable, you're in for a lot of time
and money to get XSL-FO styleheets built that would be something you'd deliver
to your customers.

Because TCS includes RoboHelp, you'll find it much easier to get online Help
from DITA, and you'll be hard-pressed to get PDFs from the OT that come close
to what you can get from Frame.

Personally, I use Frame for authoring DITA and Oxygen for coding XML/XSL.
Oxygen is a great tool, but I much prefer the authoring experience with Frame
over any other tool out there. I publish PDFs from Frame (via DITA-FMx), and
use the OT for my online outputs (HTML, CHM, and EPUB). Samples here ..

http://docs.leximation.com/dita-fmx/1.1/

If you do decide to use Frame/TCS for DITA, you should check out DITA-FMx,
which provides numerous additional authoring features, as well as makes
publishing complete and PDF-ready books much easier than the default options ..

Subject: Re: TCS 4 as DITA out-of-the-box solution

Hello Gillian

Regarding your question about TCS4 being the complete solution for DITA. You
have to analyze that statement rather carefully and remember it's from the
evangelist! The comments below are from a TCS4 user.

First, several of the components of TCS4 have nothing at all to do with DITA -
Captivate, Illustrator, RoboScreen Capture, and Acrobat. That basically leaves
FrameMaker and RoboHelp as candidates. So right there you ask yourself: would
buying just FM and RH be better and/or cheaper?

FrameMaker does come with DTDs, EDDs, and templates provided, so you can
immediately create, save, and open DITA XML documents. You'd want to tweak the
templates, of course, and it helps if you are familiar with EDDs. As an XML
editor, FM11 in my view is a big step forward from 9 and 10, but I doubt it can
compete with oXygen or xMetal (I have not used the latter). The ability to
output fine PDF is a key difference in favour of FM. There are some
deficiencies in FM, which Scott Prentice has identified in his comparison at
http://leximation.com/dita-fmx/featurecomparison.php (that comparison covers
FM10 but not 11, but it's still applicable). You may want to supplement FM11
with DITA-FMx, though there are pros and cons for that too.

Moving on to RoboHelp: RH was fundamentally designed as an HTML authoring tool.
Integration with FrameMaker has been cobbled into it, and it works on book
files, not ditamaps. So you have to create your book from a ditamap in FM, then
open the book in RH. RoboHelp can also process ditamaps directly, but it rather
depends on the day of the week and how you hold your mouth. I sometimes have a
problem with the mouth part. DITA support in RH has a lng way to go, and
the glowing reports I read of DITA support in WebWorks (not cheap) give me the
impression that is probably the better tool.

Having said all that, yes, you can use TCS4 to output DITA to PDF and HTML (we
do it). If you don't want impressive PDF, FM is inferior to the alternatives
you mention. If you're happy to just have FM and forgo the other TCS4
components, there are other tools you could use with FM alone to create output
from DITA files: WebWorks, as mentioned, DITA2Go, etc.

Hope this helps alleviate some of the marketing overhead!

Subject: RE: TCS 4 as DITA out-of-the-box solution

I am currently working a contract for a company where we are writing DITA files
using FM11 (not TCS 4). Producing DITA using FM 11 is fairly easy, but there as
some caveats. The built in EDDs, etc. allow producing more-or-less adequate PDF
using SaveAsPDF from ditamap files. To get TOCs, covers and other nicities, you
have to save the ditamap as a composite FM file and then add the additional
files into a FM book containing the composite file. Exactly how to massage
paragraph formats to get the results you desire withing the composite FM file
is not transparent. Structured documents are more difficult to change the
formats in since the EDD is the source of that information. (Any tips on how
to get the notes that are warnings and cautions will be accepted with much
happiness from anyone reading this.)

Another avenue to PDF (as well as HTMLHELP, javaHelp and other formats) comes
through using the DITA Open Toolkit. This is now easy to install so you get
what you need and the results are great for many of the formats. Most of the
help systems offered come through without muss or fuss except for an occasional
unrecognized character that can cause problems but is easily fixed). My boss
was astounded at the ease of producing HTMLHelp in this way.

The DITAOpenToolkit PDF is equally easy to produce from a ditamap, but, of
course, has a different look than the SaveAsPDF from FM11. This is because it
uses CSS templates to format the output. The result is a terrible cover sheet,
a great TOC, nice formatting of Warnings and the like. The regular notes icon
is terrible; a finger pointing to the note that seems totally out of place [it
reminds me of the similar character used by Walt Kelly in the world ballons for
the P.T. Bridgeport character from POGO]. Wading into the OpenToolkits
templates to modify the CSS is daughting, but doable. There are tips on this
that pop up if you search the web, but, again, it is not particularly
straightforward. Be sure to save the original copy of each template before
modifying.

My experience with DITA is that it is great at reducing duplication in manuals,
aids in breaking apart tasks that actually combined multiple tasks in one (thus
making them both clearer and more reusable), and helps to identify material in
manuals that just got in there because the designers of a machine were
enamoured of explaining how the pieces of it work (even if that information is
useless for any operator or maintainance task). I love it! However, I would
take the statement that TCS 4 offers a single out-of-the-box solution with a
big grain of salt.

I am going to send a separate posting with some DITA codeview interface
complaints for Adobe to consider as areas where improvement is desired (at
least from this user).

Thanks.

I went to a presentation last week given by Maxwell Hoffman from Adobe on TCS
v4.x. He stated that TCS v4.x is an out-of-the-box DITA solution that contains
DTDs, EDDs, etc, so you don't have to go to third-party solutions to obtain the
necessary pieces.

Has anyone used TCS v4.x as a complete DITA solution? Are you liking it? Is it
better or worse than using, for example, XMetal or Oxygen with 3rd-party

TCS 4 as DITA out-of-the-box solution

2012-11-27 Thread Gillian Flato

Subject: Re: TCS 4 as DITA out-of-the-box solution

Hello Gillian

Regarding your question about TCS4 being the "complete solution" for DITA. You
have to analyze that statement rather carefully and remember it's from the

TCS 4 as DITA out-of-the-box solution

Subject: Re: TCS 4 as DITA out-of-the-box solution

Cheers,

...scott

Does anyone know of a program that works like Book Vars (Leximation) but does
the same function for conditions?

Previous to FrameMaker 9, some creative Framers used resource editors to
increase the size of some of the FrameMaker dialog boxes. Has anyone done this
with FrameMaker 10 or 11? I would like to do this with a couple of the
fixed-size pods (or panels, or whatever you call them). For example, the Show
Element Context pod can't be resized in the interface. I would like to make
this bigger with a resource editor but I am not sure if I can. Any pointers
would be appreciated. Thanks.

RE: Collaborate with PDF-based roundtrip reviews?

2012-10-17 Thread Gillian Flato
Deanna,

In Frame 11 you can do what's called a Shared Revew. You host the doc on the
Acrobat server and each reviewer can make comments and see everyone else's
comments. This works very well so you don't get 5 people making the same
comment. You're supposed to be able to import the comments and the changes made
in the PDF back into your Frame file, but honestly, I've never gotten that to
work well in Frame 10. Perhaps it works better in Frame 11.

Subject: Collaborate with PDF-based roundtrip reviews?

Hi,

We are migrating from FrameMaker 7.2 to FrameMaker 11. In our current workflow,
we create a PDF file and use Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional to enable
commenting in it so that reviewers who don't have FrameMaker can electronically
review and comment on our FrameMaker documents. We then merge the electronic
comments into the PDF file and manually change the FrameMaker files accordingly.

For FrameMaker 11, Adobe advertises, Collaborate with PDF-based roundtrip
reviews. I've searched, but I can't find how these types of reviews are
implemented. Can you briefly explain how this feature works? Mainly I want to
know if we need to purchase Adobe Acrobat Professional X to retain our ability
to solicit electronic reviews from reviewers who don't have FrameMaker or if
the need for Acrobat Professional is eliminated by this feature in FrameMaker
11.

Thanks,

Deanna.

Are you selecting all the files in the book and then doing PDF Setup for all of
them? That works fine for me. If the files don't all have the same PDF
settings, then the book's PDF settings are a mix of all of them.

Reading between the lines, your problem may be where you are doing the settings.
This now works similar to a standard printer setup. If you wish to change the
default settings, you must do it from the printer control panel. If you wish to
change the defaults for a specific job, you it from the print dialog prior to
printing. These do not stick.

For PDF settings from a FrameMaker book, to change the defaults, go to the book
menu: FormatDocumentPDF Setup. Make your desired default settings, click set,
and then SAVE THE BOOK. Now your chosen default settings will appear each time
you Save As the PDF (or print/distill).

If you make changes from the print dialog prior to printing, they will not
take, even if you save the book. Next time you will again see the defaults. I
think this is what is happening to you. I am not certain, but I think this
change may have been made with Version 10. Previously the settings would stick
if made from the print dialog box before printing, if you saved the book.

On a slightly different topic, since we do not need color separations, spot
printing, or any of the other higher end print operations, we find that Save As
PDF works much better than print/distill. As mentioned recently, printing to a
ps takes many times longer and bloats the file size. With Save As we do a pdf
file from a 1000 plus page frame book in less than 2 minutes with no issues.

In doing troublshooting for a large company, I find most pdf issues are caused
by two errors:
1. Attempting to print to other than the Adobe PDF printer. Will not work for
creating a pdf. Period.
(I have seen a couple of threads in the forum recently that infer that this is
what they are attempting)

2. Acrobat corruption triggered by attempting to simultaneously install
multiple versions of Acrobat, including Pro vs Reader. This has been cleaned up
some in the later installs, but I still see it frequently. You must fully
uninstall all versions of Acrobat and then reinstall only the one version to
avoid this issue.
