Re: [Framers] FrameMaker 2020 (16.0.4) does not start (same bug as in 2015)

Thank you for the tip, Simon, but I'm not going to spend my time on this. I
guess/hope that Adobe is monitoring this list too and that they have the
time and the people to raise this issue as a bug. ;-)

[Framers] FrameMaker 2020 (16.0.4) does not start (same bug as in 2015)

2022-05-04 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi group

FrameMaker 2020 (16.0.4) refused to start this morning: no splash screen
and no FrameMaker process running in the Task Manager. Apparently, this is
the same bug as in Frame 2015:

https://www.mail-archive.com/framers@lists.frameusers.com/msg68672.html

This problem can easily be fixed by renaming or deleting the Linguistics
folder in:

C:\Users\Your.Name\AppData\LocalLow\Adobe

Kudos to Jeff Coatsworth, who posted this fix back in 2019.

@Adobe: Could you please fix this bug?

Cheers

Re: [Framers] OT: Word to XML

2019-07-22 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi Roger

I still use MIF2Go for Word to DITA conversions (via Frame, of course).
Yes, it still works with FrameMaker 11 on Windows 10 and yes, it's
incredibly powerful. I still have a (very old) video here on YouTube which
shows you more or less how it works:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHUE0G_VhTU

If you're interested, we can have a webmeeting or you can send me a sample
Word file to give it a whirl.

I wish someone would update MIF2Go for the later versions of Frame. Jeremy
Griffith did some really nice work here.

[Framers] Fm2019: Stopping the Save as PDF process?

2019-06-05 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi group

I'm still not getting used to the (much too complicated) process of having
to configure the PDF settings first in FrameMaker 2019 to be able to save
my file as PDF. So I create a new Fm file and, from force of habit, I just
choose File > Save as PDF. The process then starts and I just get to see a
dialog with a progress indicator which says "Saving". But nothing else
happens next and there seems to be no way to stop this process (pressing
Esc, for example) other than doing CTRL+ALT+DEL and quitting FrameMaker.

Or is there a way to stop this "Save as PDF" process?

And is there really no other way to create PDF the good old quick & easy
way? Or am I the only one who doesn't like the Publish pod?

Kudos to Rick Quatro by the way for his FREE RescuePDF script. ;-)

Re: [Framers] Hyperlink to a specific page in a PDF file

2019-05-24 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi all

Meanwhile, I have tried in all (in Fm 2017):

   - openpage filename(including the absolute path):pagenumber
   - gotopage filename(including the absolute path):pagenumber
   - message URL file://c:/dita/myfile.pdf#page=5
   <http://example.org/doc.pdf#page=5>

The referenced PDF file opens, but not on the page specified in my
hyperlink.

I even tried it with Fm 2019, but then the PDF file doesn't even open.

Kind regards

Yves

In my Framemaker file, I want to insert a hyperlink to a specific page in

following but that doesn't work:

message openfile filenale.pdf#5

Re: [Framers] Create a separate ToC for each text flow?

2019-05-21 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi all

Creating separate paragraph tags for French and Dutch is not really an
option, because we'd have to retag the whole text (500 + pages). Richard
Mitchell suggested to use conditional text for the French and Dutch text. I
haven't tried this, but that might work.

Anyway, Adobe should add this feature: simply allow the user to create a
ToC with multiple text flows, in which the generated ToC appears in the
corresponding text flows, so the headings from flow A in appears in flow A
in the ToC, headings from flow B in flow B etc.

[Framers] Create a separate ToC for each text flow?

2019-05-16 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi Framers

I've got this nice challenge:

I've got a big FrameMaker book in which each chapter has 2 separate text
flows: one for Dutch text and one for French. The Dutch and French text
appears side by side on each page.

I want to create a table of contents which has the same: a Dutch text flow
on the left and a French text flow on the right.

I don't see a "standard" way of doing this in Fm. When I generate a ToC, I
get the Dutch and French text mixed together in a single flow:

Dutch heading page 1
French heading page 1
Dutch heading page 2
French heading page 2

etc.

My current workaround is kinda complicated:

   1. Create 3 versions of the book, one bilingual (master) version, a
French version and a Dutch version.
   2. Remove all French text from the Dutch book and vice versa.
   3. Generate a ToC in the French version.
   4. Generate a ToC in the Dutch version.
   5. In the bilingual version, import the Dutch ToC in the Dutch text flow
of the "fake ToC" and import the French ToC in the French text flow.

It works, but it's too complicated and will take too much time when updates
occur.

Any better ideas? Can an ExtendScript do this?

Thanks

[Framers] [FrameMaker 2019] Customizing responsive HTML5 output: best practices and good documentation?

I'm looking for best practices and good documentation (or user groups) on
how to use and customize FrameMaker 2019 responsive HTML5 output, generated
from unstructured Fm files and from ditamaps. The FrameMaker "Help" does
not help me very much:

Re: [Framers] Automatic shrinkwrap?

2019-04-17 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi Rick

You wrote: "It actually happens "live"; when you scale the image, the
anchored frame shrinkwraps to the imported image. My client has created a
composite FrameMaker document from his ditamap and is formatting that for
print, including scaling images, adding some FrameMaker objects, etc"

I've just done a test with a structured binary Fm file which I generated
from a ditamap, using DITA-FMx. I had one image in an AFrame, scaled it
but... the AFrame did *not* shrinkwrap. The shrinkwrapping does happen
however, when I import a second image into the same AFrame.

To stop the skinkwrapping, you could indeed do Structure > Remove Structure
from Flow, as Scott suggested.

But I agree with Scott: all this cleanup and formatting in the *generated*
binary Fm file should not be necessary (and definitely not if you use
DITA-FMx). All these formatting changes will be lost when your customer
regenerates the Fm file from the ditamap. One of the *many* interesting
features in DITA-FMx, for example, is the ability to add the resolution of
an image as an outputclass attribute (outputclass="fmdpi:150"). When the
binary Fm file is generated, this attribute value will be applied as the
dpi value on the imported image to scale it correspondingly. Here's a
feature comparison (but Scott needs to update this list for Fm 2017 and
2019):

http://leximation.com/dita-fmx/featurecomparison.php

I think your customer needs some more DITA(+FMx) training:

https://flowtime.be/en/training/dita-fmx/

(sorry for this shameless plug ;-) )

[Framers] Fm 2019: Open responsive HTML5 (webhelp) on a specific page

2019-04-15 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi group

I'm generating responsive webhelp from DITA, using Fm 2019. When I open the
webhelp by double-clicking the index.html file, I see that the initial page
which is displayed is not the first topic, but some other topic, regardless
of its position in the ditamap. I moved that topic up and down in the
ditamap, but the webhelp keeps opening on that topic.

Is there any way to specify which page has to be displayed as the "home
screen" when the webhelp is opened?

Thanks

Re: [Framers] FrameMaker 2019: generating responsive HTML5 from a ditamap: ToC is just an alphabetical list of topic titles

2019-04-09 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi group

This problem seems to happen only when I generate webhelp from a bookmap.
When I generate webhelp from a regular ditamap, the ToC looks fine.

[Framers] FrameMaker 2019: generating responsive HTML5 from a ditamap: ToC is just an alphabetical list of topic titles

2019-04-08 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi group

I'm generating responsive html5 from a ditamap, using FrameMaker 2019. I
see that the table of content is not really a table of contents, but just a
flat list of all my topics titles, arranged in alphabetical order. Any
ideas how I can get a "real" ToC in there?

Many thanks in advance.

Re: [Framers] Any feedback on FM Publish Tools in 19?

2019-01-11 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi Art

I have just played with the HTML5 output from Fm 2019 a bit and it seems to
work pretty well. I like the dynamic content filter:

https://help.adobe.com/en_US/framemaker/2019/using/index.html#t=using-framemaker-2019%2Fid154UK0C0SGM.html

One glitch I have found so far is that my output is not updated when I
update my (unstructured) Fm file and then regenerate the output.

Re: [Framers] Space being removed in structured output

2018-12-11 Thread Yves Barbion
I have just tested this in FrameMaker 2017 (with DITA-FMx) and in 2019
(without DITA-FMx):

   1. Open the topic as you posted it (in Frame 2017 and 2019).
Result: the space after Safe life is gone, so no space between
the words "life" and "design" anymore.
   2. Remove the space after the word "life" and type a space right after
the italics end tag , so just before the word "design". Then save,
   close and reopen the file.
Result: Surprise! The space is still there.

I think it's a better practice in general to type the space outside the
inline element.

Kind regards

Yves

Re: [Framers] Space being removed in structured output

2018-12-11 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi Rick

That's the old "whitespace normalization" bug. Sometimes, FrameMaker has a
problem with inline elements, such as . By the way, you should use a
"more semantically appropriate element" as per the DITA spec, but I digress.

This has been discussed years ago in this user group, so you may want to
seach for "whitespace" in the archives. Scott's DITA-FMx plugin seems to do
a better job with whitespace normalization.

Re: [Framers] Now it's a buggy SVG IMPORT into Frame 2019 files

2018-10-23 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi Lin

Looks like a problem with font embedding in the SVG files. I don't know
about Visio, but in Adobe Illustrator, you can select font embedding
settings when you save your graphic as SVG: subset only glyphs used, all
glyphs, no glyphs (and use system fonts) etc.

Maybe you could do some tests with those settings? There may be one which
works with Fm 2019.

Cheers

Hi Caroline

I'd create a paragraph format named "codeblock" and a character format

Re: [Framers] HTML

2018-09-28 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi Doug

I've generated this webhelp from unstructured FrameMaker:

www.flowtime.be/samples/enfocus_pitstop_webhelp/Multivolume/Output/wwhelp.htm

Generated with WebWorks ePublisher.

I don't know which version of FrameMaker you're using, but the latest
versions have their own built-in (RoboHelp-based) publishing feature. Just
choose File > Publish and select your preferred format, for example
responsive HTML5.

Kind regards

Yves

Hi FrameUsers

Is there a way to find custom ruling/shading in a FrameMaker file or book?
An Extendscript or plugin maybe?

Thanks

Sorry Rick

simpletable doesn't have @pgwide, which is one of the reasons why I don't
like simpletable.

My mistake.

Re: [Framers] Graphic dpi on import from XML

Hi Rick

Leximation's DITA-FMx plugin can do this. You simply add
@outputclass="fmdpi:96" to the image and FrameMaker will display the image
at the specified resolution.

Re: [Framers] ANN: Bottlenecks

2018-06-06 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi Rick

There is this very old FrameMaker bug where text is formatted incorrectly
if there is inline markup in list items (ol/li or ul/li). It has been
described at length here and Frame experts like Lynne Price and Scott
Prentice have also been looking into it:

https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/framemaker-dita/conversations/topics/3122?guccounter=1

So far, I haven't seen a good solution for this one, so my workaround is to
specify the font "hard-coded" in the EDD, which I don't really like. Maybe
a script could help to "retag" the text to apply the correct formatting?

This was Lynne's "recap" of the problem:

_

Jon, Scott, et. al.,
Thanks, Jon, for the simple test file.

A recap is that in your DITA application, text in a paragraph in an item
in a bulleted list has the correct font even when it occurs between two
inline elements. However, text between two inline elements uses the wrong
font family in a paragraph in an item in a numbered list, although text at
the beginning or end of such a paragraph uses the correct font.

The incorrect formatting is EDD-specific; it does not appear with other
format rules for the same structure.

I believe I have isolated the problem. It does indeed seem to be an FM
bug, which by the way also occurs in FM8 and FM7.2. I disabled the DITA API
clients for my FM9 testing and thus have confirmed that the problem is not
a DITA issue. The bug is that when applying first pgf rules, FM applies the
default pgf font to a text segment at the beginning or end of a paragraph
but not to medial text segments.

In detail, the test data has the structure:

This has
multiple
instances of inline
markup
for your reading pleasure.

This has
multiple
instances of inline
markup
for your reading pleasure.

This has
one
instance for your reading pleasure.

The expected formatting is that text outside the elements
should use Calibri and text inside the should use Courier New. The
only incorrect formatting is that of "instances of inline" in the first
in the which appears in Minion Pro. Note that this is
identical to the one in the but that the entire is formatted
correctly.

The relevant format rules are:

1) has a text fmt rule that applies pgf fmt ul.bullet.indent or
ol.num.indent depending on whether it occurs in a or an . Both
these pgf fmts use Minion Pro.

2) has a first pgf rule that applies pgf fmt 1FStep, 2FStep, or Bullet
respectively to the first child of an , elsewhere in an , and
within a . These pgf fmts all use Calibri.

3) has a text format rule that applies pgf fmt Body_indent which uses
Calibri.

When FM applies the format rules, it first applies the text fmt rules
and then the first pgf rules. Within the , it therefore applies
ul.bullet.indent to the (applying Minion Pro) and then Body_indent to
the (applying Calibri). It then applies Bullet, applying the default
font only to the initial and final text segments. Since Bullet uses the
same font family as Body_indent, the fact that it does not reapply Calibri
to the medial text segment doesn't matter.

To format the , however, it applies ol.num.indent to the , which
applies Minion Pro to all text segments. Then it applies the first pgf rule
to change the default pgf font to Calibri, but applies this change only to
the edge text segments, leaving Minion Pro on the medial one.

As this analysis suggests, removing the text format rule on causes
the same error to occur in the as in the . Similarly, applying
Body_indent to a in a in an avoids the bug there just as it
does in the .

Jon did not see the problem when he inserted a new inline element in the
within the because that operation does not cause FM to reformat
the adjacent text segment. Reformatting the or any of its ancestors by
changing the element to itself (e.g., changing the to a , the
to an , etc.), or by importing element definitions while removing
overrides, does cause FM to reformat the critical text segment, and to
reformat it incorrectly.

When FM opens the XML version of the document, however, it delays
applying format rules until it has imported the entire document, thereby
triggering the bug.

By the way, the original EDD applies pgf fmts and char fmts rather than
applying individual properties as needed. My tests included using specific
properties but it did not change the results.

I have reduced the EDD from the original 315 pages to a page and a half.
Will keep a copy for a few days if anyone wants to see it.

Yves

Re: [Framers] Expand all element boudaries (as tags) in EDD?

2018-05-04 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi Rick

Yes, that's what I had tried, but Shift-click on one of the elements does
not expand ALL of them, not even when I Shift-click the root element (in
the Structure view and in the document view). Some elements are expanded,
some are not, randomly, which is not really handy. ;-)

Kind regards

[Framers] Resolution (dpi) incorrect in Fm 2017

2018-01-19 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi all

I'm using FrameMaker 2017 all patched up (14.0.3). I import an png image (a
screen shot at 96 dpi) and I select 150 dpi in the "Imported Graphic
Scaling" dialog. However, this doesn't seem to work: the image is scaled to
1.04% of its original size and the dpi is "unknown" in the Object
Properties dialog panel pod thing even though I didn't scale the image by
dragging one of its corners.

Has anyone else seen this bug?

Cheers

[Framers] Cannot initialize API client svg2pdf.dll

2017-08-23 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi group

I've got a ditamap with some 250 referenced SVG files. When I generate a
FrameMaker book from my ditamap, I get the following error message:

Cannot initialize API client c:\program files\..\svg2pdf.dll

My "APIClients section" in my maker.ini seems to be OK and I have 16 GB RAM
(running FrameMaker 2017 on Windows 7).

Any ideas what could be wrong?

[Framers] Size of imported SVG files

2017-08-22 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi group

I've got 2 SVG images which have the following size in Inkscape:

Image 1, the "large image:
width: 448 mm
height: 316 mm

Image 2, the same large image which I scaled in Insckape to the following
size:
width: 166
height: 153

When I put this image in a DITA topic and generate a FrameMaker file from
my ditamap (using DITA-FMx), I see that the size of the images becomes as
follows:

Image 1 (large size):
width: 280 mm
height: 198 mm
dpi: 72
*scaling: 50%*

Image 2:
width: 207.496 mm
height: 191.763 mm
dpi: 72
scaling: 100%

In DITA, I haven't used any scaling attributes (@scale, @scalefit,
@outputclass...).

When I *import *these graphics into a new FrameMaker file, the size is as
follows

Image 1 (large size):
width: 560.0mm
height: 396,001 mm
dpi: 72
*scaling: 100%*

Image 2:
width: 207,496 mm
height: 191,763 mm
dpi: 72
scaling: 100%

When I import the graphics at 90 dpi, they have approximately the same size
as their original size in Inkscape.

Does anyone have any idea why the large image is scaled 50% in the
FrameMaker file generated from the DITA topic?

Also, I see that, DIP is greyed out in the Object Properties dialog, so
there seems to be no way to change the DPI setting afterwards (using a
script, for example)?

I'm using FrameMaker 2017 with DITA-FMx 2.0.

Thanks

Re: [Framers] Display full path in FrameMaker book or list of references

2017-07-19 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi Rick

I knew you 'd have a clever script like PathChanger. ;-)

I think my customer can use this. His main problem was actually to collect
all the files in a FrameMaker book to send them out for translation. Fm's
Package feature didn't work well, so I have already shown him where he can
purchase ArchiveES:

http://frameautomation.com/category/extendscript/

And now I see that this is also the place where we can find more
information on PathChanger:

http://frameautomation.com/solving-path-problems-with-pathchanger/

Thank you very much, again, Rick! You rock! ;-)

Cheers

[Framers] Display full path in FrameMaker book or list of references

2017-07-17 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi Framers

If the path to a referenced file is really long, FrameMaker displays ..\ in
the FrameMaker book or ../ in the List of References, for example:

..\..\..\..\..\..\safety.fm in the Fm book

or

../../../../../warning_icon.png

Is there a way to see the full path instead?

Thanks

[Framers] Plugins no longer work after installing Fm 14.0.1

2017-05-10 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi group

I had plugins for Fm 2017 which worked fine in 14.0.0 but installing 14.0.1
seems to have killed them:

"Cannot initalize API client"

Is anyone else seeing this?

Re: [Framers] FrameMaker CMYK workaround

2017-02-10 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi Rick

I knew it! That old CMYK bug again. ;-)

Color *conversions* from one color space to another are not really
accurate, so you may want to do a color *remapping* instead, i.e. remap
given RGB colors to predefined CMYK values (usually a company's color).

The Enfocus PitStop plug-in for Acrobat can do color remapping and most
professional printers these days have PitStop (or similar preflighting
tools) to check and fix the colors before the documents are printed, so we
(the PDF creators) don't really have to worry about color spaces and color
separations anymore:

http://www.enfocus.com/manuals/UserGuide/PP/10/enUS/en-us/concept/co_remap_color.html

But yes, it would be nice if Adobe could fix that CMYK bug.

Cheers

Re: [Framers] What do you say when FrameMaker disappoints?

2017-02-10 Thread Yves Barbion
Yes, I'm afraid you're the only one, Alan. I've just tested Help > About
FrameMaker and this works for me. ;-)

@Rick: does FrameMaker crash consistently in a given chapter or on a given
page? Maybe there's a vector graphic on that page which does not have the
fonts embedded (used to be one of those old problems)? And have you tried
to select RGB instead of CMYK in the *PDF Setup *dialog?

For me, this is one of those weird things in Frame: If there is a problem
in the PDF file, say random text missing
on some pages, Adobe Support's advice was to select RGB instead of CMYK.
Usually, this solved the problem indeed, but what if I wanted to create a
CMYK PDF file with ALL of my text in there? And how are different color
models related to missing text? This problem still seems to be there in Fm
2017 because next to the CMYK option in the PDF Setup dialog, I read the
ominous message: "Recommended to choose RGB option for Right-to-Left
document". That's a nice warning but... how do I create a CMYK RTL PDF
(nice acronym stack ;-)) then?

Still, I like FrameMaker's flexibility to format DITA-structured content
and generate pretty nice PDFs (with some help from DITA-FMx, of course ;-)):

Re: [Framers] OT: Webinar: I am looking for a solution

2016-12-08 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi Rick

I like oXygen XML Web Author a lot. You can test it online here:

https://www.oxygenxml.com/xml_web_author.html

I'm seeing the following configuration:

   - Technical writers use FrameMaker + DITA-FMx or the desktop version of
   oXygen XML Author
   - Content contributors (subject matter experts) use oXygen XML Web Author
   - The content can be managed in Git or a DITA-aware content management
system like DITAToo, Bluestream XDocs, Componize etc.
   - To publish to PDF, you can use FrameMaker + DITA-FMx (see also
   http://leximation.com/dita-fmx/featurecomparison.php).

The content contributors could also use Simply XML DITA Edition, but Simply
XML does not support the complete DITA standard and all of DITA's reuse
features. But then again, your customer may not have a need for full DITA
support.

I'd love to watch your Solution Search Webinar, but I'm not available this
afternoon.

Kind regards

Yves

[Framers] Anchored frames get a solid stroke

2016-10-12 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi group

When I open old FrameMaker files (Fm8, Fm12...) in FrameMaker 13.0.5, I see
that they get a solid stroke (pen pattern), which is not the idea because
they didn't have any stroke in the earlier versions of FrameMaker.

This seems to happen only if the anchored frames contain Illustrator EPS
files, not if they contain pixel images.

Is this a known bug?

Any fixes?

Thanks

Yves Barbion

Re: [Framers] Oh not! Please not that old CMYK bug in Fm 12 again... [SOLVED]

2016-09-02 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi group

I found the cause of the problem: a logo in Illustrator EPS format, which
seemed to be too complex for Distiller.

I just exported the logo to PNG and now Distiller is happily generating my
CMYK PDF.

So, no CMYK PDF bug in Frame and no font issues (fortunately).

Cheers!

[Framers] Oh not! Please not that old CMYK bug in Fm 12 again...

2016-09-01 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi group

I'm using FrameMaker 12.0.4. When I save a file as PDF and select CMYK,
Distiller gives me an offending command and flusing end of job.

When I save the file as Fm 11 and use Fm 11 to save the file as CMYK PDF,
all is fine.

So I guess the old CMYK PDF bug is back in Fm 12? Fm 12 is all patched up
and, since Fm2015 has already been released, I guess this bug will not be
fixed in Fm12?

Has this bug been fixed in Fm2015?

Cheers

[Framers] SVG exported from Adobe Illustrator is all black when imported into Frame

2016-08-24 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi group

I'm doing some tests with SVGs:

   1. Create a line-art drawing in Illustrator and save it as Illustrator
   EPS.
   2. Save the EPS file as SVG with subsetting (one version with all glyphs
and one version with no glyphs).
   3. Export the EPS file as SVG.

When I view the SVGs in various browsers (Firefox and Chrome), I see that
the exported SVG gives the best result: responsive and all fonts OK. The
"Save As" SVGs are not OK: not responsive and incorrect font (and character
spacing).

So, the exported SVGs seem to work best but... when I import them into
Frame 11 of 12, they are all black.

Any ideas whether this can be fixed and how?

Thanks

Re: [Framers] Import AutoCad dwg files

2016-08-18 Thread Yves Barbion
Thank you Klaus

Yes, I had already found this page on your website when I googled around
for "import dwg in FrameMaker". And "severe problems" is what I would try
to avoid, so I think I'll stick with exporting the AutoCad drawings to PDF
(or SVG) and import those in Fm.

Thanks!

Re: [Framers] Import AutoCad dwg files

2016-08-17 Thread Yves Barbion
Well, AutoCad (DWG) is in the list of file formats in the Import dialog, so
I suppose Frame should be able to import it.
Our current workaround is to export the AutoCad drawings to PDF and import
PDF, which works nicely.

[Framers] Import AutoCad dwg files

2016-08-17 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi group

Has anyone ever succeeded in importing AutoCad .dwg files into FrameMaker?
I've tested this with several versions of dwg files (2000 and 2010) and
Frame 11 and 12, but I keep getting the error message "The filter
encountered an error and could not complete the translation".

Thanks

[Framers] pagenum with leading 0: <$curpagenum01>?

2016-08-17 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi again Framers

I'd like to have a leading zero in my page numbers, so <$curpagenum01>,
similar to <$daynum01>.

Can this be done or is this a feature request for the next version of Frame?

[Framers] Insert modification date on changed pages

2016-08-17 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi Framers

I've got a product catalogue of which the content mainly consists of
illustrations (in PDF format). Each page has 1 illustration imported by
reference and the footer on each page currently contains the "modification
date". This date is currently identical on all pages in a chapter, because
it is the date on which the FrameMaker file was last modified.

Suppose I have one chapter which has 20 pages and I replace (or update) an
illustration on one of those pages. I would then like the date to change on
that particular page only. Is there a way (plugin, script) to do this?

Ideally, the date on each page should be the date which is taken from the
XMP Core Properties from the PDF file (xmp:ModifyDate), but I would be
surprised if this can be done automatically?

Thanks in advance.

Re: [Framers] FrameMaker 12: "Save as" grayed out

Hi Klaus

Thank you for your reply. I've tested this again and the problem seems to
occur with files which are on Dropbox. I checked Edit > Preferences >
Global > Dropbox, but I didn't find any special settings there.

So yes, I think we can call this a bug. My workaround is now to save the
file in a non-Dropbox folder and then move it to Dropbox.

I see that the "Save as" menu command is grayed out in FrameMaker 12

Is this a known Fm12 bug?

I have just tested this (again) with Rick Quatro's Archive Extendscript and
it seems to work well (as expected): graphics from different folders are
collected into a single "Graphics" folder. I guess the script can also be

Re: [Framers] FrameMaker and Salesforce

2016-03-09 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi Robyn

Salesforce uses DITA for their documentation. Just google "salesforce" and
"dita" for more info. FrameMaker supports DITA, and you get enhanced DITA
support with Leximation's DITA-FMx plugin. oXygenXML supports DITA too and
runs on Windows and Mac, so DITA seems like an obvious choice to me.

Re: [Framers] Save as Word?

Hi Caroline

I don't know whether MIF2Go works with Frame 2015, but you can still find
the latest version of MIF2Go here, so maybe you could give it a try:

http://www.mif2go.com/download/registered.html

And the other option is indeed to use Acrobat to export your PDFs to Word.
The latest versions of Acrobat do a fairly good job at this.

Re: [Framers] "Modularity" and FrameMaker

2016-01-22 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi Eric

Agile, modular documentation, reuse ("bits of information about a product
that could be shared in multiple manuals and possibly other documents"):
all good reasons to "go DITA".

An agile User Story is a standalone feature that is meant to answer one
customer need. Similarly, a DITA topic is a standalone piece of content
that answers a single question, for example:

   - How can I do task X?
   - What is a given concept?
   - Where can I find a given component or software command?

So, in DITA, the idea is that you write standalone topics, which you then
assemble into a DITA map. A DITA map corresponds (more or less) to a
FrameMaker book, but the difference is that each DITA topic is a separate
XML file, whereas the components in a FrameMaker book are usually chapters
in a binary FrameMaker format. This means that reusing information in
unstructured (binary) FrameMaker is more difficult than it is in DITA. In
DITA, you can reuse topics as a whole in various DITA maps, but you can
also reuse parts of a topic, such as a section of a topic or even
individual sentences or paragraphs.

You are already using unstructured Frame 12, which supports DITA, and the
DITA-FMx plugin supports DITA even better:

http://leximation.com/dita-fmx/featurecomparison.php

Y
ou can google "DITA" and "Agile" and you'll find lots of pointers, but
here are some interesting ones:

remapping Frame formats

2015-05-26 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi group

I'm looking for a FrameMaker plugin or script to remap FrameMaker
formats: character formats, paragraph formats, table formats,
cross-reference formats...

I have used TemplateMapper in 2003, but I was wondering whether something
more recent is available somewhere, for example a (Frame)script which works
as follows would be nice:
1. List all the used formats in column A in a separate mapping table, for
example an Excel file.
2. In column B, the user fills in the name of the formats to which the old
formats should be renamed.
3. The user saves the mapping file and then applies this Excel file to
one or more FrameMaker books.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Re: Flare vs DITA

2015-04-13 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi Gillian

Why would you have to hire someone to write scripts if you do DITA?

Just like Art, I'd use FM with DITA-FMx. If you know how to create
unstructured Fm templates, you can easily learn how to modify the
component templates that come with DITA-FMx. Actually, the process is
quite simple:

   1. You map the formats from your unstructured template to the formats
in the DITA-FMx component templates. For example, take the Heading 1
paratag from your template and rename it to title.0.
   2. You import the formats from your unstructured Fm template into one or
   more DITA-FMx component templates.

Basically, that's it! No scripts required at all. Later, you may want to
finetune your component templates, which may imply:

   - Customizing the EDD and/or
   - Buying some (inexpensive) DITA-FMx add-ons, for example to insert
   (warning) symbols

If it was me, and it was a newish project without tons of legacy content

FrameMaker 12 Package function doesn't really work

2014-08-14 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi group

I've got an Fm file with graphics imported by reference. The Fm file is in
folder A and the graphics are in folder B, C and D.

When I try to create a package, I get a message saying that I opted not to
create [a] package if dependent file(s) are missing and that files will
not be copied as they exist outside [the] containing folder of the document
to be packaged.

No I did not opt this and I thought that was the whole idea of creating a
package: to collect all the linked graphics into a single folder (or
subfolders), as the Archive plugin or the Archive ExtendScript did.

So, when I click Continue after seeing the above messages, a ZIP file is
created but it only contains my Fm file, no graphics.

Cheers

Re: Structured Framemaker

2014-07-15 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi Rebecca

You could save the edited structapps.fm file in a temporary folder, for
example C:\temp or on your desktop. Then, you can copy that file to the
FrameMaker installation folder, for example:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\AdobeFrameMaker11\Structure

Re: Can a PDF behave like context-sensitive help?

2014-05-20 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi Beverly

I'm not saying that it's a good idea, but you can make a PDF behave like
context-sensitive help. We have done this recently for one of our
customers. The idea is that you insert context hooks (custom markers) in
your FrameMaker files and then use those markers in the URL which points to
that PDF file, for example:

http://www.datacard.com/documentation/user_guide.pdf#nameddest=M5.8.newlink.topicA

This URL wil open the PDF file on the page where this marker (a named
destination in the PDF file) is used, typically on a title.

The problem with these named destinations, however, is that they also get a
prefix, for example M5.8, where M5 refers to the fifth file in the
FrameMaker book. So, if the content gets updated, and a new file is added
to the book before this fifth file, the prefix will become M6 and you
will have to update all URLs. To avoid this, you can use MicroType
Timesavers:

http://www.microtype.com/TimeSavers/TimeSaversDlg.pdf

It works, but still, PDF is not really an ideal format for
context-sensitive help. But you're using FrameMaker 12, so why don't you
publish to an HTML-based format?

Kind regards

How to get rid of the Console pod

2014-03-21 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi group

FrameMaker 11 has a Console pod and a FrameMaker Console. The
FrameMaker Console is a separate window, so that's OK. The Console pod,
however, keeps reappearing each time I generate a FrameMaker book from a

Does anyone how to get rid of this Console pod once and for all?

Fastest way to find an element in an EDD

2014-02-27 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi EDD developers

Suppose you want to find an element with a specific name quickly in an EDD,
what would be the fastest way?

For example, I want to find an element named keyword in an EDD to specify
its formatting rules. So, I need to find the following:

[Element][Tag] Element (Container):keyword[/Tag]

I do not want to search for text: keyword, because keyword is a child
element of many other elements, so I would find the text keyword in the
[GeneralRule] element of many other elements.

I can search for an element tag: Tag, but I cannot search for an element
tag: Tag which has the text keyword.

So, what do you do to find this element quickly?

Cheers

Incorrect font size when inline elements are used

2014-02-27 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi group

I'm using FrameMaker 11 with DITA-FMx 1.1.18c to generate FrameMaker files
from DITA maps. Sometimes, when inline elements are used, the font size is
incorrect in the generated Fm files. Some examples:

   - The default font size of list items (paratag ul.bullet) is 9 pt. If
two keywords are used in this list item, however, the (regular) text
between these two keywords is 10 pt instead of 9 pt. The same happens when
the ph element is used: the text after the ph element is also 10 pt instead
   of 9.
   - The default font size of text in a table cell is 8 pt. If a keyword is
used in a list item in a table cell, however, the font size is 10 pt
instead of 8. And if a uicontrol element is used in a table cell, the font
size is 9 pt instead of 8.

I checked the EDD:

   - The uicontrol element uses the ui.control character format, so I
think/hope this can easily be fixed, just by not specifying the font size
for this character format in the character designer.
   - The ph and keyword elements have TextRangeFormatting TextRange in
all contexts, but I don't have any idea how we can fix this problem.

I think I have seen similar posts about this problem earlier, so I think it
must be a FrameMaker bug.

Any suggestions?

To execute 'save as PDF' command you must have Acrobat Distiller 5.05 or higher installed

2014-02-03 Thread Yves Barbion

I've got Fm11 and Acrobat Distiller 9 installed on Windows 7 Professional,
all patched up.

Sometimes, when I try to save a book as PDF, I get the error message

5.05 or higher installed.

But all is well again when I quit and restart FrameMaker.

Must be a known bug, because I have found similar posts from 2010 in other
FrameMaker groups too.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Re: OT: looking for a font designer

2014-01-20 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi David

I'm afraid it's not that simple. I have already tested some font editors,
including FontCreator, Fontographer, FontForge and TypeTool and I saw that
the fill and/or stroke of some objects is not always preserved when the EPS
is imported into these editors.

Moreover, the (technical) properties of the font need to be specified
correctly, so that the font embedding/subsetting works properly when we
generate a PDF (and print it) from the FrameMaker files.
