RE: Table Elements Out of Order in Cross-Reference Dialog

2011-02-22 Thread Graham, Jasmine S
Many thanks to several of you who have responded so far (some on and off list).

Fred, I agree that this list is relevant to the authors only and does not have
an effect on the document. In my years past, when it happened, I simply
dismissed it and moved on. I am pursuing it now because it is appearing in my
template, which means it will likely be present in every future document
created from that template. Another reason is because I am gearing up to C
very, very hopefully -- be training other SME writers who will all be new to
Frame. I’d like it very much if these new learners do not encounter this
”distraction” while they are learning to use Frame.

Michael, I did verify that the elements are listed in Document Order (not
sorted by ID) in the X-Ref dialog. This is a good thing to watch for if someone
gets confused because they changed the sort order.

As always, this group is terrific!

Why does it matter what order is used in the Cross-Reference dialog? That list
is merely a convenience to authors when when new cross-references are being
added to a document. You are the only person who ever sees that list, and its
order has absolutely no effect on the final document.

Cross-references are point-to-point links that depend on the (semi-)unique
marker ID number that FrameMaker assigns the first time you create an x-ref
that points to a given paragraph. The order in which targets are listed in the
Cross-Reference dialog has no effect on the functioning of the x-refs.

Fellow Framers,

Structured Frame 8, on XP, been clicking along just fine, but now experiencing
a quirk I’ve seen in years past. I am the only one working on these documents,
so I assume it’s a pilot error on my part.

What causes a table element to appear out of order in the Cross-Reference
dialog? After inserting new tables, I go to create new cross references and see
elements listed in the X-Ref dialog as follows:

Table 1
Table 4 (was a new table I added)
Table 3 (was a second new table I added)
Table 2
Table 5 (was three before I got into this)

I have tried numerous things like moving them around, deleting and recreating,
and so forth. What is it that I am doing to cause this so that I can remedy it?
What’s happening under the hood to get these references out of order?

Thanks in advance and Happy Friday!

odd behavior in cross-reference dialog box

2008-08-05 Thread obai...@comcast.net
I am taking over a former writer's work, and the only odd thing that I am
finding in the Frame (8) files is this.

When I double-click a cross-reference link, the Cross-Reference dialog box
shows "Cross-Ref" and Marker Types in the left pane and Cross-Reference Markers
in the right pane, instead of all the paragraph tags in the left pane and the
relevant targets in the right pane.

I know that I can click Source Type and choose Paragraphs to see the paragraph
tags, but doing that a hundred times a day is getting long.

In all my documents, when I double-click a cross-reference link, the
Cross-Reference dialog box shows all the paragraph tags in the left pane and
the relevant targets in the right pane.

I want this standard behavior (for me, anyway) when I double-click the former
writer's links.

Is there some setting about which I am forgetting?

Thanks.

best,
Paul

Re: How To Include BookTitle Variable in Cross-reference Format

2007-04-29 Thread Zoe Lawson
The way I worked around this was to create an 'invisible' paragraph. The way I
did it was to make a little text frame behind the chapter title frame. I would
then insert the book title in that text frame, using a paragraph tag
'booktitle'. I used a variable so that I wouldn't have to go back and fix it
manually as often. I think some people also use small text frames with white
text, so it's 'invisible'. This paragraph was in every chapter and appendix.

I would then create a cross-reference that referenced the booktitle paragraph.
(I'm forgetting what the actual reference was right now.)

A little clunky, but once you set up the templates, it just automagically works
and you don't have to think about it again. It worked great.

Zoë

I'd like to link to another book using a cross-reference. I've tried to
include a destination's book title variable in the format definition, but
can't seem to get the value to populate. Can you share your cross-book
cross-reference variable definitions with me?

Thank you,

How To Include BookTitle Variable in Cross-reference Format

HTH,

Zo?

character tags in cross reference text - solved!

2007-02-01 Thread rebecca officer
Got it!!

For anyone else who wants to do the same, the solution was:

1. Close FM.

2. Back up maker.ini, then in the [WindowsToFrameFontAliases] section
of maker.ini, replace this line:
Courier, Italic, *=Courier, Oblique, *, Regular
with this line:
Courier, Italic, *=CourierItalic, Oblique, *, Regular

This makes FM call the italics Courier font "CourierItalic".

3. Open FM. Define the character tag to use CourierItalic instead of
Courier.

Thanks very much for your help, Richard. There's no way I'd have worked
it out by myself. And once I had more of an idea what to google for, I
found a post by Shlomo Perets that was very helpful too, so Shlomo, if
you're reading this, thanks too.

Cheers, Rebecca

Thanks Richard!

I did the quick test (Courier -> Courier New) and it didn't preserve
the italics but did preserve the different font in the xref. So the
bits
that I wanted to have Courier New italics were Courier New. That's a
lot
closer than I was before!

So by the look of it, I need to find/make a version of Courier that
has
the italics as its "regular" form. That should be do-able. If anyone
knows how off the top of their head, I'd appreciate the info.
Otherwise,
I'll go play.

I vaguely recall someone describing a (somewhat difficult) solution
for
this once, but don't have time to search for the post right now. IIRC,
it was based on the fact that xrefs retain char formats that use a
different font family. So, you need to create a copy of the font used
with a new name -- I think you need Fontographer or equivalent because
you have to change the internal name of the font.

For instance, if you're using Courier for your commands, and applying
the Variable char tag to italicize the variables, you create a new
font,
CourierCopy, and redefine the Variable char tag to be CourierCopy
Italic. FM will retain this in your xrefs.

As a quick test, try it with two similar-looking fonts, such as the
PostScript font Courier and its TrueType cousin, Courier New -- if
that
works and looks OK, maybe you're done! :-)

character tags in cross reference text

2007-02-01 Thread rebecca officer
Hi Caroline

Thanks for that, but unfortunately - as Niels thought - it doesn't work
in this situation. We have text like this:

parameter1 option1 parameter2 parameter3 option3

where option1 and option3 need to be in italics. And the number of
parameters and options varies.

I have a nasty feeling I've seen other people post similar requests in
the dim dark past and get no solutions, but thought I'd see if anyone's

I think you would need to make a special cross reference style that you
use just to create the cross references to the commands.
Then define for that cross reference style that the characters should
appear in italics (i.e. use for the cross reference the character tag
that is used for the commands)

Hi everyone

I just wondered if anyone has a trick that lets you make a
cross-reference to something that includes character-tagged text, and
preserve the character tag in the cross-reference?

We document commands, and some of them have italics in part of the
command syntax. In the associated step-by-step instructions, the most
reliable way to include the command syntax is to use cross-references.
But the italics get lost. :-(

Thanks!

character tags in cross reference text

2007-01-31 Thread Grant Hogarth
If the options are redundant/replicated two options I can think of are:
1: A variable for each option, as variables can contain formatting
2: An inset for each option.

Or perhaps I'm missing a bit

Thanks for that, but unfortunately - as Niels thought - it doesn't work

I think you would need to make a special cross reference style that you
use just to create the cross references to the commands.
Then define for that cross reference style that the characters should
appear in italics (i.e. use for the cross reference the character tag
that is used for the commands)

Subject: character tags in cross reference text

Thanks!
Rebecca

I vaguely recall someone describing a (somewhat difficult) solution for
this once, but don't have time to search for the post right now. IIRC,
it was based on the fact that xrefs retain char formats that use a
different font family. So, you need to create a copy of the font used
with a new name -- I think you need Fontographer or equivalent because
you have to change the internal name of the font.

For instance, if you're using Courier for your commands, and applying
the Variable char tag to italicize the variables, you create a new font,
CourierCopy, and redefine the Variable char tag to be CourierCopy
Italic. FM will retain this in your xrefs.

As a quick test, try it with two similar-looking fonts, such as the
PostScript font Courier and its TrueType cousin, Courier New -- if that
works and looks OK, maybe you're done! :-)

HTH!
Richard

RE: character tags in cross reference text

2007-01-31 Thread Grant Hogarth
If the options are redundant/replicated two options I can think of are:
1: A variable for each option, as variables can contain formatting
2: An inset for each option.

Or perhaps I'm missing a bit

Hi Caroline

Thanks for that, but unfortunately - as Niels thought - it doesn't work
in this situation. We have text like this:

parameter1 option1 parameter2 parameter3 option3

where option1 and option3 need to be in italics. And the number of
parameters and options varies.

I have a nasty feeling I've seen other people post similar requests in
the dim dark past and get no solutions, but thought I'd see if anyone's
invented something clever.

Cheers, Rebecca

In dialog boxes, the backslash is the "escape" character
