Actually, there are 2 major problems with Word's autonumbering feature. The first one is setting it up properly, for which we do have control. MS Word Numbering (was RE: FrameMaker uses)
Hi: I've had a number people ask for the workshop, and I've sent it on. The workshop is for formatting Headings 1 through 9. I will be writing up the directions for formatting other levels, such as 1., (1), a., (a), etc. The concepts are exactly the same, so if you get the Heading 1 - 9 logic, you can create the other levels. They just involve creating a new style for each new level, which is accomplished by right clicking New Style in the upper box of the Styles and Formatting dialog box, and naming the new style whatever you want. I tend to use Style1, Style2, etc. But as I said, I'll write up that workshop as well and send it on to anyone interested. Deirdre On 5/13/08, Lester C. I for one would appreciate understanding the 'proper' way to handle numbering in Word. MS Word Numbering (was RE: FrameMaker uses)
The tutorials are already on the web, Lester. You may have to search for them a bit. I no longer have the URLs. Maybe others on this list do. And as another poster replied, it's essential that everyone who touches a Word doc knows how to handle the numbering (and uses the same Word template). = Mike Bradley www.techpubs.com > I for one would appreciate understanding the 'proper' way to handle > numbering in Word. Hi Robin/Will (?) I use autonumbering in Word all the time and have very few problems with it. I've repaired more bolloxed autonumbering jobs than I can remember. Autonumbering in Word is fairly easy, once one knows how to do it. I'd be happy to help anyone who needs help with autonumbering. MS Word Numbering (was RE: FrameMaker uses)
I for one would appreciate understanding the 'proper' way to handle numbering in Word. For me, it would help to fix garbaged numbers in document I receive to convert to SGML - numbering is an issue because if it's wrong, the structure requires a lot of manual correction. If you folks who actually can get it to work, reliably and consistently, would not mind creating some sort of basic tutorial or simplified procedure list re numbering in Word, I'm sure a great many folks on this list would benefit. Jon - Sorry, but I have to disagree. The huge amount of on-line discussion by people struggling with Word's numbering contradicts your assertion. The only reason that your numbering coup was a achievement is because the Word autonumbering implementation is a miserable kludge that you managed to harness one time. Re: Framemaker uses
I use Framemaker to write my Feldenkrais ATM (Awareness Through Movement) lessons. I actually tried to write the lessons in MSWord, but the numbering always got loused up. The numbering is actually complicated. The lessons generally consist of 8 main steps and each step has sub-steps. I number them 1, a, b, c, 2 , a, betc. This probably sounds simple - easy peasy, use autonumbering, but many times a step can be repeated (once on the left and once on the right). So, I used pgfs for the numbering the main steps and it is wonderful. Framemaker Uses
Hi Deirdre I've used Frame since 1992 for a variety of different products, including tons of white papers, manuals, training guides, technical marketing materials, policies, procedures, reports, spec sheets and the like. During the past few years, I've focused on using unstructured Frame for single sourced projects with multiple outputs such as print documentation, online help, print-friendly PDFs, online-friendly PDFs, etc. All the documents I've created have relied heavily on numbering, cross-referencing, consistency in terminology, have short creation deadlines and even shorter editing deadlines. For one document, a user guide of over 6500 pages, we were able to turn on a dime when we had over 2500 pages completed...we strictly enforced the use of character and paragragh tags, variables and cross references. When the client's legal time wanted the product name to always have a trademark, it was changed within minutes of the request. And when a manager decided we absolutely *must* use different formatting for the keys pressed, it was completed in minutes and all remaining content was matched to the new standards with no muss, no fuss. I can't say I would use for products that required fine layout techniques and especially not for documents with heavy footnoting requirements. It positively sucks for those! My most recent project is using Frame to single source a series of policies and procedures for over 18 plants. The materials are at least 50-60% reusable and we're using standard, unstructured Frame features to handle the changes that are made on a plant by plant basis. Although the end users protested at first, they were won over when they found out about the neat new things they could get (everything from not being responsible for writing and maintaining the content to hotlinked references to the relevant regulatory local, state, and federal codes! Hope this helps Jerilynne Knight Simply Written, Inc.

Besides research papers, meeting minutes, etc., I wrote a logic textbook in FM3 and 4 and a more advanced research monograph in FM7. Lots of numbered examples, xrefs to them, fair number of line diagrams, and in the latter case (unfortunately) lots of footnotes. In doing the textbook I switched from a then-unstable word processor with an idiosyncratic xref add-on, but decent footnotes and search/replace to die for, namely, Nisus, and what a godsend FM's stable anchored frames and xref capacities were. And what a nightmare its incorrectly programmed footnote procedures have been ever since. I honestly think FM would own the academic market by now if its owners had ever put the effort into fixing the footnotes. Graeme Forbes

Hi Deirdre: No one's mentioned this yet, so I'll add for all the single-sourcing people out there that FrameMaker is wonderful for writing things once and using it many times. Whether you're using conditional text and variables so that some stuff only shows up in certain flavours of manuals, or text insets so that a piece of text can be used by different manuals, or generating HTML and PDF from the same FrameMaker document, it's all called single-sourcing and it saves a lot of time and effort. Then there's the whole structured and XML side of FrameMaker, which can also be a huge timesaver. In a nutshell, it automates a lot of the tedious formatting tasks for you. Round-tripping to XML also means that people who don't have FrameMaker can still work on the documents. Also, you can develop scripts to produce the XML that is subsequently opened in FrameMaker where the formatting is automatically applied. All this intro is to say that I'm using FrameMaker on software manuals, but some of the contents are generated from programming code as XML files, and some of the Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) are working in XML. I'm producing HTML for Eclipse help and PDFs. We have eight product lines, so I'm re-using a lot of the material for two or more products, and I can manage all this as a lone writer working 3/4 time because of FrameMaker and its add-ons. Now that Rene mentions it ... When I wrote "SUSE Linux 10 Unleashed," a couple years ago, my editors at Sams Publishing said they accepted FM and Word files, but since it was a Linux book, doing it in Frame wasn't practical (way too much rebooting involved). For the 2nd edition ("openSUSE Linux Unleashed"--in better bookstores everywhere now), I didn't even think about it. But I would guess that more than one book from Sams/Prentice-Hall/Peachpit/whoever else is in that part of the publishing universe has been written using FrameMaker. I can't speak for fiction or magazines but I do layout of technical books for a couple of commercial publishers. They both have the authors writing in Word using a very simple template. (The thinking is: The books are written by subject matter experts who are not necessarily technical writers. "Almost everyone" has Word; very few have FrameMaker or other layout applications, nor would they be willing to purchase anything as pricey as Frame. In any case, the publishers prefer the writers not to focus on design.) Once the content is final, it's turned over to a compositor (me or someone like me) who then lays it out for press. In my experience, more of these books are laid out in Quark or InDesign than in FrameMaker. FrameMaker is widely used by corporate pubs or tech pubs groups to produce manuals such as you describe (Maintenance Manuals, Aircraft Maintenance Manuals, Wiring Diagram Manuals, and Illustrated Parts Catalogs). RE: Framemaker Uses
The company I work for, Aeris Communications, Inc., is in the telecom industry, providing Machine-2-Machine networks across North America (USA, Canada and Mexico). We produce our interface API documentation, various white papers, etc., using FrameMaker. I am the only user of it here (but we are looking for a Sr. Tech Writer contractor in Marketing who would use it). Many small papers and documents (generally 5 to 20 pages each) in the Marketing department are done with Word 2003 and 2007. No website stuff, no books (unless you consider one of my larger 200 page API document to be a book :)), no famous writers writing spine-chillers, no magazines ...
