Re: Zapf Dingbats mystery

2009-02-27 Thread Steve Rickaby
I raised the ATM issue with Brian...

Thanks for persevering. Update to info below.

I have just uninstalled ATM and restarted PC App but it has made no
difference. I am using Adobe Acrobat 3D v7.0.7. My new PC has Win XP Pro
SP2. All programs have been clean installed and fonts reinstalled.

I do not think FM7.1 is seeing the symbol/zapfdingbat fonts even though
it is listing them. I have just added some symbols using ANSI code and it
works OK on Standard Character Set but gives either nothing or the wrong
symbol when it comes from the Symbol and Dingbat Sets.

Having read the comments below re Open Type I am beginning to wonder if
it is loss of functionality in FM7 that was restored in later versions.
What do you and your gurus think?

[I have replied that my FrameMaker installation, 7.0p577 for Mac, has no
problems with OpenType fonts.]

If this is indeed the case, I will have to put a case forward to our
management as we are using FM7 as the global standard and most of our
legacy manuals templates use zapfdingbats/symbols.

Other than in the Designer, is there anywhere else in Fm that can alter
where the program looks for fonts?

As I recall, I had the same problem with that until I actually copied
the old Dingbats.pfm/pfb font files from my home computer to the
windows\fonts folder on my work machine. Prior to invoking the sneaker
net, I was able to see the symbol I selected in FM documents when I
was at home, but couldn't at work. In both cases, the machines are
Windows XP, SP3, with FM 8.277.

I can probably send you a zip of those files if you want.

Sorry, I should have suggested an alternative course of action. This
typeface is available from Adobe in PostScript Type 1 ($26) and OpenType
($29) versions ( http://tinyurl.com/bjumrf).

Also, it's included in the Adobe Type Basics package (PS and OT
versions, both $99), which includes the 35 standard PS typefaces built
into most PS printers, plus 30 more (http://tinyurl.com/bnoshl). It's a
terrific bargain, which I recommend highly. For one thing, this package
miraculously resolves about 70% of the missing font messages
FrameMaker users have (which are caused by using a font avaiable on a
specific PS printer, but not installed on your system).

Note: Adobe's type licenses generally permit use on up to five
computers, so you don't have to spend $100 for each person in your tech
pubs group. If you buy a Type Basics package for 3 people, it works out
to about 50 cents per person per typeface.

Sorry, I should have suggested an alternative course of action. This
typeface is available from Adobe in PostScript Type 1 ($26) and OpenType
($29) versions ( http://tinyurl.com/bjumrf).

Also, it's included in the Adobe Type Basics package (PS and OT

into most PS printers, plus 30 more (http://tinyurl.com/bnoshl). It's a
terrific bargain, which I recommend highly. For one thing, this package
"miraculously" resolves about 70% of the "missing font" messages
FrameMaker users have (which are caused by using a font avaiable on a
specific PS printer, but not installed on your system).

Note: Adobe's type licenses generally permit use on up to five

to about 50 cents per person per typeface.

that Art, Lester and other raised...

At 09:18 +0100 25/2/09, White Brian wrote:

1- Yes Zapfdingbats works OK in MS Word, Open Office, FM5.5 FM6.

2- Hard printing displays exactly as shown on screen. I've tried

Same result in all.

3- The Framemaker Console only displays the following message- The
Times Font is not available. It will be replaced by Times New
Roman. (I always get this message - in FM5.5 6 also so it is not the
cause of the problem).

4- The latest version (I assume) of zapf dingbats would have been
installed with FM7.

I would like to reinstall the zapfdingbats font but do not know how to
or where to get it from. I am also considering reinstalling FM7 as a last

But he still doesn't say if the system default printer is set to Adobe
PDF or a hard printer somewhere, which is a key diagnostic...

Are there any other users at his site who can open the file?

Given that it works on your system, that he may be running three
unsupported versions of (FM 5-7) on a system, that he gets continual
missing fonts messages but hasn't cleared them, and that he doesn't
know how to install fonts would make me wonder about his level of
system setup expertise

Zapf Dingbats mystery

2009-02-25 Thread Art Campbell
But he still doesn't say if the system default printer is set to Adobe
PDF or a hard printer somewhere, which is a key diagnostic...

Are there any other users at his site who can open the file?

Given that it works on your system, that he may be running three
unsupported versions of (FM 5-7) on a system, that he gets continual
missing fonts messages but hasn't cleared them, and that he doesn't
know how to install fonts would make me wonder about his level of
system setup expertise

Zapf Dingbats mystery

2009-02-24 Thread Steve Rickaby
I'm wrestling with this one on behalf of a remote colleague...

He's just upgraded from FrameMaker 6 to FrameMaker 7.1 on Win XP-Pro SP3. After
doing so, he finds that all his Zapf Dingbats characters are rendering as
plaintext, even though the Character Designer says that the font is Dingbats,
as expected.

I'm on Mac and don't have enough experience of Windows FrameMaker installations
to fox this out. If he sends me a sample document, the Dingbats appear
correctly in FrameMaker 7.1 for Mac. Both of us see what would be expected in
the Character Designer.

Is this some Windows thing, perhaps?

Re: Zapf Dingbats mystery

2009-02-24 Thread Art Campbell
You don't mention if it's an on-screen problem, or also shows up in
printed copy, both PDF and hard copy...
Also, does Dingbats display and print OK in other applications?

It's possible that he's using a printer's hard fonts. So a good first
thing to check would be that his system default printer is set to an
Adobe PDF printer instance. If that's already true, I'd think about
checking to see how old the font file itself is... maybe think about
installing an Open format file.

There was a problem with Dingbats in the Frame 5 / Windows NT era, but
if he hasn't updated his fonts since then, it may be worth looking at
this antique: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=515
.

Re: Zapf Dingbats mystery

2009-02-24 Thread Les Smalley
Does your colleague actually have the Zapf Dingbat font installed?  Did this
happen in FM 6 also or did the dingbat characters display correctly?

Do any error messages appear in the FM console window when opening the
document, especially a message to the effect that the Dingbat font is not
available and another font (such as Times New Roman) will be used?

I will guess that this is the case, and when he sends the document back to you
who does have the font, it opens normally.  This is a feature of FrameMaker -
it can make a temporary font substitution so editing can proceed, but when
opened on a system with the correct typefaces available the file will show them.

Everything worked as expected in FrameMaker 6, as I understand it.

He says not, but I will double-check. It was the apparent absence of such

RE: Zapf Dingbats mystery

I received a reply directly that may shed additional light on this question.

It is always important to know what changed when things that once worked nicely
suddenly go awry, so finding out if a system update or other external
activity may have occurred which might be the source of the font problems is
valuable advice.

However, I did not think ATM is needed on any Windows XP / Vista system, but if
installed very well could be the source of the problem, especially in
conjunction with some other update to the environment.

We had to uninstall ATM, apply a ATM hotfix (use the correct one there are two,
one forDeluxe and one for Light), upgrade to FM 9 and Acrobat to at least V7.
Then through FM 9 change out the Type 1 fonts to Open Type. We switched from
Times to Times New Roman and Helvetica to Arial and no problem printing.

FM 7.x does not support Open Type and FM 9 does, and FM 9 requires Acrobat V7

We choose to update our fonts Open Type/True Type .ttf and not Open Type .otf.
There is a difference there.
