Text missing in PDF ...

2008-10-27 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Hi,

I have this strange problem with disappearing text when printing to PDF.

FM 8.0p277, distiller 8.1.2 (CS3), Windows XP (SP3), Type 1 font (TheSans).

Some text disappears, seems at random but always the same paragraphs. This
has been up before, but I can't recall the cause/solution.

Anyone?

Thanks

2 issues

2008-10-27 Thread Joel
I am on Frame 8.0p277, Windows XP.
Frame had been working just fine for months and months, but last week IT did
a new build on my PC and I had to reinstall Frame. I installed all of the
updates to 8.0p277, and also installed Acrobat 9 Pro. Now, to my
consternation, Frame is crashing when I save as PDF again! I can't believe
it! I get this error in Distiller:

Adobe PostScript software version: 3018.101
Adobe PDF Settings file read error in PDFX4 2007.joboptions:
/CheckCompliance out of range

Also, my docs use Myriad Pro and it suddenly looks horrendous in Frame. I
don't remember all the details of my settings prior to the new build, so I
don't know how to get the fonts looking normal. Any advice is appreciated.

Many thanks for this! I had forgotten the hotfix from Microsoft but it took
care of the crashing issue.
Myriad Pro displays just fine in Acrobat but looks terrible in Frame right
now. Not sure why.

Commas in paragraph tags

2008-10-27 Thread Charles Beck
Esteemed Framers,

I have a problem I am hoping someone can help me solve. I have searched
the Frame documentation to no avail. I do not have time to search
through all the archives for this list; so please forgive if the info is
there (which I rather doubt).

I have a set of templates that I inherited. I want to use the Heading 2
paragraph style in a running header. Unfortunately, the paragraph style
is actually named Heading 2,H2, which confuses FrameMaker when
encountered in a system variable paragraph tag $paratext[Heading
2,H2]. Frame thinks it is a multiple style reference because of the
comma. That much I have learned from the documentation.

The question is, short of renaming the paragraph style (which is not
really an option for us), is there any way to get Frame to recognized
this as a single paragraph style in a paragraph tag for a running
header?

Please reply to me directly, as I am on digest.

TIA for whatever help anyone can give me!

Re: Commas in paragraph tags

2008-10-27 Thread Peter Gold
Hi, Chuck:

I don't have a solution, but I do have a suggestion. It sounds as if
you've found a bug in how FM processes the naming of paragraph (and
probably character) format names. If an embedded comma confuses the
running header/footer variable, it shouldn't be permitted when
defining the format's name. An explanatory alert should appear.

You might want to submit this as a bug report / feature request, at:

http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform

RE: Commas in paragraph tags

2008-10-27 Thread quills
I think you are mostly correct, I've seen Word combine tag names like
this when it encounters tags witht he exact same formatting but
different names. Doing that, always made my life more difficult. It's
a feature of Word that only creates problems for users.

I'm guessing these templates either began life in Word or were created
by someone more familiar with Word than FM -- this is a common naming
convention in Word templates. IIRC, Word recognizes the parts on either
side of the comma as alternative names, so the H2 part makes keyboard
tagging easier. (It's been more than a decade since I did any serious
work in Word, so I may be misremembering the reason, but I'm sure it's a
Word-type tag name.)

In any case, this naming convention serves no useful purpose in FM, and
you've now discovered a fairly significant drawback. So why isn't
changing it an option?

RE: Commas in paragraph tags

2008-10-27 Thread Charles Beck
Thanks to all who've responded so far. Since I'm getting a fair number of
duplicate questions, I'll respond to the group.

First, although I neglected to mention it in my first post, I tried enclosing
the style name in both single and double quotes. No go. I tried prefacing the
comma with a backslash as Michael suggests here. No dice. I tried leaving it
out altogether. Nothing.

The reason that changing the paragraph style name does not (at least) appear to
be an option is that we have a couple dozen publications, each consisting of
multiple chapter files, TOC file, index file, etc. We simply don't have time to
go through and clean up each file with the new paragraph style names.

I am aware of several cleanup tools that allow you to clean up an entire file
at once, but I am under the impression that you still have to go through each
file one at a time. If I am mistaken in that impression, I would happily be
corrected. *Is* there a tool out there that would allows us to do batch changes
of selected paragraph style names, at least at the book level? That is the only
way, I fear, that we would have time to undertake the change.

Thanks,
Chuck

Look at Silicon Prairie Software's Paragraph's Tool.

It will do batch tag replacement. And it's extremely cost effective.

If Frame and Acrobat can't open, print, and close the network files
(including all graphics and insets) without the connection timing out,
the job will fail. And the more files involved, the more likely a
network timing glitch can interfere.

It could occur on a slow network or if there are lock files in place
on the components, or just unresolved cross ref or font issues.

Are the files that you're trying to print open on your desktop?

My PDF fails all the time. I switch between File Save as PDF and

I also change the PDF job options from Standard to High Quality Print

What is going wrong, however, I don't know.

Good luck,

RE: MadCap Flare

2008-10-27 Thread Jon Harvey
Hi Callie,

My team has been using Flare with FM 7.2 for some time now. One thing I
like about Flare is that it is very easy to use after you tell Flare
which FM files to use, how to map styles from FM to online help, and
what you want your help to look like. I can switch from CHM to WebHelp
at basically the click of a mouse. Also, publishing files is very easy.

However, Flare does have some issues that we still haven't figured out
how to solve (and neither has MadCap, we've contacted them). We've had a
few images mysteriously fail to appear in CHM files without knowing why.
We've also had a few instances where conditional text would appear in
the online help when it shouldn't. These instances have been rare but
they do happen.

Overall, I won't rave about Flare because it does have some issues; but,
I will say that it is pretty good for what we use it for.

Hi Framers,
Due to frustration using ePublisher Pro and the coding learning curve of
Mif2Go, we are seriously considering switching help generation software
to MadCap Flare. I know I've generated chatter about this before, so I'm
sorry if this feels repetitive; but can I get any more input from anyone
who uses Flare with FrameMaker (7.2) to generate extensive
single-sourced material? More words of caution or advice? I've evaluated
the software to a fair extent and it seems capable; I'm really excited
that it can generate help from the command line. But because it's a
younger product, I would really value any more input from others who
have taken the plunge.

I generate thousands of pages into about 22 manuals and 3 online help
bundles. Currently ePP 9.1, Frame 7.2, WebWorks help output. My primary
concern in upgrading to the newer ePP was the glitch where it randomly
skips filename markers in the output, leaving me without random pages
that I need (I've heard that they've fixed it, but I've also heard that
it didn't work for at least one user), as well as the glee that
producing help from the command line would give me.

Cheers,
Callie

Problem with sequence in the Table of Contents (tables and following text)

2008-10-27 Thread Terri Schultz

Running non-structured FM 7.2 on Windows XP.

My file has a table that flows over eight pages. The table has three columns.

   Column 1: Report Name
Column 2: General Description (Lots of text in this cell)
Column 3: Notes (Lots of text in this cell)

The Report Names use a unique paragraph tag. This tag generates TOC entries for
each report name.

The last two rows of the table flow to share a page with text. Each row has the
Report Name paragraph tag for the TOC.

The first paragraph after the table is tagged Heading 1.

When I generate the TOC, all of the Report Names on pages 1-7 list in correct
sequence.
The last two Report names (page 8) come after the page 8 Heading 1, even though
they appear on the page above the Heading 1.

Everything is in Flow A. I can't find any table or paragraph overrides.

If I force the page 8 Heading 1 to a new page, the generated TOC sequence is
correct.
If I really tweak the table so the last rows don't share a page with the
following text, the generated TOC sequence is correct.

Thanks for any and all help! Terri ([EMAIL PROTECTED])

Re: Reasons for using graphic and table anchor tags

2008-10-27 Thread Keith Smyth
Linda, the reason I use anchors for graphics, and tables is that I can:
1. do a search for Anchor_F (which is my graphic anchor) or Anchor_T
2. Set next paragraph format
3. Spacing above and below
4. span columns
5. etc., etc.,

Framers,

I don't need convincing; I use specific tags to anchor all of my graphics

your reasons for always anchoring tables and graphics to specific para tags?

When I explain this to students, they have trouble with the concept and why
they should bother. I need more ammunition for the why.

Delay with clipboard extenders

2008-10-27 Thread Gunther Schmidt
Hello all,

After updating to FrameMaker 8 I have noticed that my favourite clipboard
extender Ditto-cp causes FrameMaker to be unresponsive for about three or
four seconds after hitting Control-C. First I have thought that Ditto-cp is
responsible for it but several other clipboard extenders (ArsClip. Yankee
Clipper etc.) cause that delay too; in other applications they work
perfect.

The hasn't been a delay with FrameMaker 7 and Ditto-cp. What's wrong and
how can I fix it?

Any help is much appreciated.

RE: MadCap Flare

2008-10-27 Thread Jared Crawford
Callie,

As a FrameMaker user, I evaluated Flare, FrameMaker +ePublisher, and Adobe's
Technical Communicator Suite last April. Each approach has its limitations,
advantages, and frustrations.

Flare is the most forward-looking product, but there is a learning curve and no
real point in authoring in FrameMaker if you choose that solution. Flare is
great for help systems, but has some challenges regarding PDF creation that are
being addressed.

If your authors are bent on using FrameMaker, that would be a deal breaker for
Flare. If you must author in FrameMaker, your choices should be ePublisher or
Technical Communicator Suite. If purchasing new software, I'd go with the Suite
because it's a great value if you're interested in all its tools.

If you already own ePublisher and FrameMaker, I recommend pressing on and
solving your problems with it. It will pay off. The other applications are
equally annoying in what you have to do to make them work and look good.

Mif2Go is useful if you want to occassionally filter to other formats, but as a
production tool, I've never had much success with it. I found it to be more of
a time suck than the other applications. I know that some people love it, so
it's just my opinion.

All these applications have free trials that are worth spending a couple of
days playing with.

I hope that helps.

to MadCap Flare.

Cheers,
Callie

RE: Two-column layout and large graphics

But another possibility would be to set such

This might work. As I'm playing around with it, I'm not seeing a way to keep
the caption paragraph with the anchored frame as it moves to the top or
bottom of the page.

I could put the caption inside the anchored frame (current caption style
doesn't have numbers). I think if we number the captions, the numbering
won't update from inside the anchored frame, right?

Any other way to keep the caption para with the moved anchored frame?

columns and the anchored frame to align left and not be cropped, I can get
the graphic to go across the two columns. Are there any other methods to
get
the graphic across the two columns? I could not figure any others out.

AFAIK, that's the only way, short of designing a special master page
for every graphic like that.

After I do that, the text that came before the graphic spreads out across
the two columns above the graphic and the text that came after the graphic
spreads out into the two columns below the graphic.

Is this normal for this type of layout? I rarely use two columns, and don't
have graphics that go across the two columns when I do.

Yes, IMHO.

I think the client would prefer that the text in the left column continue
down the left column below the graphic, then continue to top of the right
column, then below the graphic in the right column.

Is there a way to do that in FM?

Not that I know of. But another possibility would be to set such
graphics to go always to the top (or bottom) of the page. Then the
question would be moot. ;-)

True, that's a problem when you have captions.

IIRC, it *will* update, but may not be in the sequence you expect
if there are other items using the same numbering series around.
Two in a row on the same page may be numbered backwards.

Any other way to keep the caption para with the moved anchored frame?

The old standby is to use a one-celled table to package the frame
and the caption, if the more limited table placement options work
for you.

Re: Two-column layout and large graphics

2008-10-27 Thread Mike Wickham
I'm not seeing a way to keep
the caption paragraph with the anchored frame as it moves to the top or
 bottom of the page.

Create a two-cell table format and use it for captioned graphics. Assign
your graphic anchor paragraph format to the top cell and your caption
paragraph format to the bottom cell. Insert the table wherever you want a
graphic. Then import the graphic into the top cell and the type the caption
text into the bottom cell. They'll move together.

You can take it a step further with the Autotext plugin from Silicon Prairie
Software. It lets you create a text block that would also include the empty
paragraph that holds the two-cell table. You can pop it all in with a menu
click, instead of creating the table anchor paragraph and inserting the
table separately.

Anyone?

Commas in paragraph tags

2008-10-27 Thread Charles Beck
Esteemed Framers,

I have a problem I am hoping someone can help me solve. I have searched
the Frame documentation to no avail. I do not have time to search
through all the archives for this list; so please forgive if the info is
there (which I rather doubt).

I have a set of templates that I inherited. I want to use the Heading 2
paragraph style in a running header. Unfortunately, the paragraph style
is actually named "Heading 2,H2", which confuses FrameMaker when
encountered in a system variable paragraph tag <$paratext[Heading

Commas in paragraph tags

2008-10-27 Thread Charles Beck

Thanks,
Chuck

"An error occurred while printing."

2008-10-27 Thread Nina Rogers
OS: Windows XP
Acrobat: 7.0 Professional (stand-alone full version)
Yes, the file I want to print is open.

So weird ... this is a task I do every day, multiple times a day, but
this is the first time I've ever gotten this error message.

Thanks!

Nina,

What OS are you running, and what version of Acrobat (and is it the
stand-alone full version or the limited Distiller version shipped with
FM)?

Are the files that you're trying to print open on your desktop?

Hmm, looks like this is a PDF problem and not a Framemaker problem. I
can't print to PDF from Word either ...

MadCap Flare

Hi Framers,
Due to frustration using ePublisher Pro and the coding learning curve of
Mif2Go, we are seriously considering switching help generation software
to MadCap Flare.

Cheers,
Callie

Two-column layout and large graphics

2008-10-27 Thread Linda G. Gallagher

AFAIK, that's the only way, short of designing a special master page
for every graphic like that.

Yes, IMHO.

Two in a row on the same page may be numbered "backwards".

>Any other way to keep the caption para with the moved anchored frame?

The old standby is to use a one-celled table to package the frame
and the caption, if the more limited table placement options work
for you.
