2007-09-26 Thread Austin Meredith
My PDFs at www.kouroo.info are being generated out of FrameMaker 7.0
documents by the use of the Save as PDF menu item. This translation
automatically turns each FrameMaker alert entry into an Acrobat
note hidden under a little black-and-white icon of a page with one
corner turned up. It is laborious and tedious, needing to manually
readjust each of these generated Acrobat PDFs page by page as I
create them! I wonder if there is a way to reset the defaults so that
when FrameMaker generates a PDF, the standard color of these
automatically generated note icons is *yellow* rather than black-and-white.

The Acrobat team at Adobe says this is not an Acrobat issue, but a
FrameMaker issue. Would anyone on this list have any instructions for
me? Is there a way to reset defaults for the Save as PDF conversion process?

Hard to believe that in another year FM'll be old enough to drink.

Here's to those of us who have been with FM for the whole ride, all

Hypertext links in Acrobat 8 documents generated from FrameMaker 8

2007-12-18 Thread Austin Meredith
I've recently upgraded to FM8 and Acrobat8 and now the new links in
the Acrobat documents I am generating won't function.

I suspect I must have had some option set in my old Acrobat7 that I
have forgotten to set in my new Acrobat8, because the links I used to
generate still function. However, ADVANCED DOCUMENT PROCESSING
CREATE LINKS FROM URLS doesn't activate my new links. -- What toggle
have I forgotten about?

Re: Hypertext links in Acrobat 8 documents generated from FrameMaker 8

2007-12-19 Thread Austin Meredith
Having recently upgraded on the XP PC from Adobe FrameMaker 7 and
Acrobat Pro 7 to FM8.0p266 and Acrobat Pro 8.1.1 and Adobe Reader
8.1.1, we can't get our distilled hypertext buttons to function
anymore. Our Kouroo project is dead in the water!

We've tried View Generated PDF in Acrobat, and we've tried
Generate PDF Bookmarks, and we've tried Generate Tagged PDF, and
Create Named Destinations for All Paragraphs, etc.

The routine, which worked fine in FM7 in distilling Acrobat7 docs,
but doesn't seem to be functioning for us in version 8, has been
while distilling to Embed All Page Thumbnails, and to Manage
Embedded Index, and to Automatically generate web links on All
pages, and to add a document description under Properties, and to
Reduce File Size, and then to Enable for Commenting and Analysis
in Adobe Reader.

However, now, whenever one punches a hypertext button on a web page
that we have generated, the error message we always get is There was
an error while performing an action. Attempt to call a method that
has not been implemented. These are hypertext buttons that work fine
on the PC, in connecting one FrameMaker8 document to another
FrameMaker8 document -- but in between two distilled Acrobat8
documents on the web, none of them work at all.

An example of this would be the interplay between
http://www.kouroo.info/kouroo/thumbnails/G/TheGrimkeSisters.pdf and
http://www.kouroo.info/kouroo/thumbnails/W/TheodoreWeld.pdf

Please somebody -- tell me that you do this successfully, that it
does still work in 8??? Reassurance would help a lot at this point.

I am not aware of any way to control this from within FrameMaker 8.0.

We are feeling as if Adobe has just sabotaged our entire 15-year

having recommended that we upgrade to the latest Adobe software? We
are rushing to take down from the internet the files we have posted

considerable embarrassment. And, we are sitting around wondering how
we can possibly recover from this -- is there a way that we can now
open, in FM7, the thousands upon thousands of files that have in the
past few weeks been touched by this FM8 abortion? Or, are we just dead?

Re: Hypertext links in Acrobat 8 documents generated from FrameMaker 8

2007-12-20 Thread Austin Meredith

Could this be your problem, taken from the Microtype FM8 bug list
(http://www.microtype.com/FM_bugs.html):
Cross-file links in PDFs authored in FrameMaker 8.0 use
Unicode-encoded file paths and file names, which are only supported
in Windows Acrobat/Reader 8.x or MacOS Acrobat/Reader 7.x or later.
As a result, cross-file links are not functional when the PDF is
displayed in earlier Acrobat/Reader versions, even though the target
files are present.
When clicking the cross-file links, the following message is
displayed: There was an error opening this document. The path does
not exist. Some PDFs with cross-file links trigger the following
message upon opening in Acrobat/Reader versions earlier than 8:
This file appears to use a new format... Adobe recommends that you
upgrade to the latest version of our Acrobat products

Actually, Kanti, we are using FM8.0p266 and Acrobat Pro 8.1.1 and
Adobe Reader 8.1.1, the very latest stuff, and *still* the links
don't work. However, Shlomo Perets of MicroType says he has known
about this FM problem all along, and is working on a new version of
his software, which he offers will shortly resolve this problem with
Unicode-encoded file paths and file names, at a cost of some $200.
I'll gladly take it out of my own paycheck.

We feel betrayed by Adobe. How could they have offered us an
upgrade that is so secretly crippled? For our project, this is like
sabotage. We've got my fingers crossed, that we're going to be able
to recover from this successfully. Even in the best of all possible
scenarios, after Shlomo distributes his new software there is going
to be a hell of a lot of work here, weeks and weeks of work,
re-distilling all these PDF files and uploading them again to the
internet website.

Re: Hypertext links in Acrobat8 documents generated from FM8 don't work

2007-12-21 Thread Austin Meredith

We are feeling as if Adobe has just sabotaged our entire 15-year
project. How could they have offered an upgrade that destroys hypertext?

Our Kouroo project now has 212,974 files that have already been saved
as FM8 since we upgraded a few weeks ago, so going back to FM7
seems difficult. We are, however, beginning to scheme a feasible
workaround to give Adobe time to get its act together in regard to
hypertext and FM8. FM8 does allow us to save an FM8 file in the FM7
format, and FM7 does generate valid hypertext in an Acrobat document.
So, *if* we can have both FM8 and FM7 installed at the same time (if
there is a way to keep them from interfering with each other), and
*if* we don't use any UNICODE or other features that would be
destroyed in the retro-save as FM7 (and if Acrobat8.1 can still
handle hypertext), a possible workaround would be: to first save an
FM8 document as a FM7 document before attempting to generate any
Acrobat8.1 document with hypertext. That seems feasible if it's doable.

The three questions associated with this feasible workaround would
be: 1.) is there a way to have FM8 and still have FM7 also? --and,
2.) are there any new FM8 features that we cannot allow to be
destroyed by saving as FM7? --and, 3.) does the 8.1 version of
Acrobat still accept hypertext?

Does anyone have any thoughts about this? Are the above three items doable?

Bugs, or features, in FM8

2007-12-28 Thread Austin Meredith
Since our Kouroo project now has an effective workaround for the fact
that the hypertext linkage between FM8 and PDF files has not yet been
implemented (by way of first saving a FM8 file as a FM7 MIF file
before distilling a PDF), the initial panic has subsided. It turns
out that it's not a big deal and our project can wait patiently for
Adobe to fix this.

I've noticed something else, however. I've always been in the habit
of using the locking/unlocking feature of FM, using the keystrokes
Ctrl F l k to transit the files back and forth between a locked
use condition to an unlocked edit condition. However, in FM8, if
you do a Ctrl s save before you do the Ctrl F l k Ctrl w to lock
and close a file, your Ctrl F l k is wasted effort as the file
simply doesn't stay locked.

(If you can remember *not* to do a Ctrl s before doing your Ctrl F
l k Ctrl w, then locking still works in FM8.)

So, is this a bug, or a feature, of FM8?

In the old days, there was a free thingie called Frame Reader or
something like that, that your users could use to access your work
product. It was a full version of FM free for download, but it was
save-disabled. Later on, when you printed from this, it came to be
that each printed page would bear a gray diagonal trial copy
marker. This reader product became harder and harder to find on the
Adobe website, and eventually disappeared. More recently, when a user
downloads and installs a save-disabled trial version of FM, this
trial version is good for only a month. Meanwhile, Adobe has been
developing Acrobat and replacing Frame Reader as a way to deliver our
content to our customer -- and has gradually been removing more and
more of the limitations of Acrobat.

Back in the days of this Frame Reader, there was a purpose to the
locking/unlocking feature of FM. Now, however, with this bug (or
feature) in FM8, I'm not even bothering to lock and unlock the files
anymore! I'm simply telling my users, For hypertext in an Acrobat
document, you can just click on a button, but for hypertext in a
FrameMaker document, you'll need to remember to hold down the control
key while you click on it.

Can anyone think of a reason why we need to file a bug report on
this? Can we now just let go of the lock/unlock thingie -- consider
it as a piece of our evolutionary history?

Re: Hypertext links in Acrobat8 documents generated from FM8 don't work

2008-02-05 Thread Austin Meredith
A FrameMaker 8.0 patch has just been downloaded onto my computer and
I am now at Version 8.0p273. This is the patch that is supposed to
fix the PDF hyperlinks in web documents. I have not yet checked to
make sure that my FM8 now generates hyperlinks properly, but you need
to be aware that *there is a minor problem* in the downloading and
installation of this 273 patch. It downloads itself while one's local
FM8 is active, and then when it notices that one's FM8 is active, it
asks permission to close FM9. If, however, one at that point gives it
permission to close FM8, the patch will *fail to install*.

This new patch will install properly but you will need to get your
FM8 closed on your own initiative while the download process, which
takes several minutes, is still underway -- *before* the patch
installer generates this pop-up window asking for permission to close your FM8.

Upgrade to Frame 8? (Fred Skillman)

Fred, patch 273 took account of our open issues. We are not having
any problems at all subsequent to the successful installation of that
patch. All systems are go with Frame 8.0p273 on a WindowsXP system
with Service Pack 2. Dive in at the middle and swim both ways.

By the way, does anyone on this list know of a way to suppress the

a day does get a tad annoying (since our decision is always to accept

How to avoid crashes with FM9 on Win7

2010-01-01 Thread Austin Meredith
[Previously, when we attempted to send in this information about FM9 on Win7,
were used an HTML editor and therefore the message as delivered became blank.]

As soon as we moved to FM9 on Win7 (64-bit) we began to encounter multiple
daily crashes. We have learned we can avoid such crashes entirely, by
refraining from
applying conditional text either by use of the old menu system at the top of
the page or the new menu system at the right side of the page.

Instead our workaround is to 1.) select an *existing* example of the condition
we desire to apply, 2.) COPY that condition to the clipboard, 3.) SELECT the
text
to which we desire to apply that condition, and 4.) PASTE.

FM8 crashing like it's WORD

2011-05-14 Thread Austin Meredith
FM 8 on PC, Windows Vista, 32 bit system, 2.38 GHz CPU, 4 GB RAM.
And Frame is crashing WAY too often.

I'm running FM9 on PC, Windows7 Ultimate, 64-bit, 3,33GHz CPU, 24GB RAM, and the
FM crashes have over a period of many months been training me to stay away from
a few things. For instance, I find that I very seldom apply a character format
or a paragraph format in the usual menu manner, anymore, because that produces
so many annoying instant crashes and restarts. What I find myself doing --due I
suppose to my being trained subliminally by the software-- is that I avoid the
menus and apply character formats and paragraph formats instead by *copying and
pasting*. Going to an existing character or paragraph format example, and
copying and pasting that format in the new location, simply does not ever
produce any of these annoying instant crashes and restarts! I mean, it is a pain
in the ass to do this and I do still get these annoying instant crashes -- but
my sense of it is that this is not happening nearly so often.___

FrameMaker 10

2011-06-25 Thread Austin Meredith
We're definitely not betatesters or early adopters -- there is far too much
daily work that needs to be accomplished here, using the FrameMaker software
tool, to take risks with new and unproven versions. Except of course for the
sudden and too-frequent crashes, there's not anything in particular we need to
do with FrameMaker that Version 9 seems incapable of.
Here's our question: now that Adobe has issued its first patch for FrameMaker
10 and now that we are familiar with Acrobat X, do you imagine that it would be
unproblematic for us to upgrade from FM9 to FM10 (unstructured, for a 64-bit
environment)? And, might this hopefully lessen the number of sudden crashes we
experience per workday?___

RE: why is FM's UI so weird and buggy?

2013-03-07 Thread Austin Meredith
The kind of UI thing that bugs me is this: You have two documents tiled on the
screen. You are in the left side document with your cursor in a paragraph that
you want to retag. You slide your mouse over to the docked paragraph catalog
(which is open on the right side of the screen) and click on a paragraph tag
to apply it. Instead of applying it in the left hand document, you new tag is
applied in the right hand document. Maddening!

I have had to learn that to get my cursor over to the dock at the right, I must
first take the cursor up or down into the margin so as the cursor moves to the
right it *never passes across* the right hand document. (Every once in awhile I
forget and then DAMN, FrameMaker did it to me yet again!)___

Save as HTML in FrameMaker 11

2013-10-20 Thread Austin Meredith
I'm using FrameMaker 9 Unstructured with Windows 7 to generate PDFs for the
internet, and I'm forever getting complaints from my users such as Your live
links simply don't function, with Safari on my iPad!

Once upon a time I attempted to generate HTML output but the only result I was
able to obtain, way back then, was unreadable garbage, unreadable garbage that
at my skill level I couldn't figure out how to fix. What would probably be my
experience *now* if I upgraded to FrameMaker 11 Unstructured and again attempted
to Save as HTML? With the new software, would this now produce reasonable HTML
output that I could then expect to be able to fine-tune? Or --my skill levels
being as low as they are-- would I probably still find myself in that same fix?___

Generating web pages out of FM

2014-03-11 Thread Austin Meredith
A message from a Doubting Thomas: We read Adobe's assertion, that with the
latest version of FM we become able to transform our files directly into
good-looking web pages. However, this isn't the first time the corporation has
claimed this for its product and with earlier versions of FM it simply was not
true. Now the latest version of FM has been available for some months and yet we
haven't seen anyone claim on this discussion list, that this time they have
succeeded.

We're standing by, to purchase a new PC with the latest Microsoft operating
system and such, on which to install this latest FM version. Funding has been
approved and we're ready to go to town! --But, we're hesitant. A scalded dog
runs away from dishwater.

What gives? Has anyone actually done this yet? Has anyone now been able to
directly transform their FM files into good-looking web pages? Can someone
provide the URL for an example of this?___

2014-06-11 Thread Austin Meredith
Martha Lee suggested: I got several Windows updates last night. Maybe you did
too and that's the cause of your Internal Error: 9004?

Thank you, Martha. I also received and installed those several Windows updates
last night.

The excellent news is, my problem is now fixed, and very simply. In the
FrameMaker system folder there is a folder labeled Linguistics. Search for
that folder, and rename it Linguistics_old -- forcing FM9 to initialize a new
such Linguistics folder.

Immediately I was able to fire up my FM9 and get back to work!

(Please, everyone, do *not* ask me to explain why that worked. It worked, that's
all. I am back in the ranks of the happy campers.)___

What is your experience with FM12 using the 5K Retina screen?

2015-04-15 Thread Austin Meredith
Because of fading eyesight due to old age, I have been thinking about upgrading
my hardware and software. I'd like to purchase a new iMac loaded with the
Windows operating system, because of Apple's amazing brilliant precise 5K Retina
monitor on which print appears so crisp, and then run FrameMaker 12 under
Windows on that iMac. However, when I contacted Adobe about whether it was
possible to run FrameMaker 12 at full screen resolution on the 5K Retina
monitor, they responded that -- despite the fact that the 5K Retina monitor has
been being sold for some time now, they have yet to test this!

Apparently Adobe's attitude is that I would need to first pig-in-a-poke purchase
the latest Apple hardware, and download and install their latest Adobe software,
and then test for native screen resolution *myself*. --If it should turn out
that FM12 won't run on the 5K Retina screen I had just purchased at full
resolution, then I'm SOL, and shame on my eyes for getting old.

Question #1: Has anyone on this list succeeded in running FM12 at full screen
resolution on a 5K Retina monitor? Or, has it been necessary to degrade the
resolution of the screen in order to run FM12? Question #2: If it has been
necessary to degrade the resolution of this monitor in order to run FM12, how
does FM12 look on this monitor? --Is it superior in quality of image, crispness
of print, etc., or is it inferior? Question #3: Should I instead purchase some
other brand of monitor for the visually disabled, such as the latest hi-res
big-screen monitor offered by Dell?

(This was Adobe's response: The Compatible screen resolution is 1024x768 screen
resolution (1280x800 recommended) mentioned under
http://www.adobe.com/products/framemaker/systemreqs.html. 5K Retina screen has
not yet been tested with FrameMaker 12. We had tested 4K with FrameMaker 12 and
were experiencing issues with the display and eventually had to adjust the
display resolution. However, If you want you can install the trial version for
FrameMaker 12 and check if it works fine with your display or not.)___

2007-09-26 Thread Austin Meredith
My PDFs at www.kouroo.info are being generated out of FrameMaker 7.0
documents by the use of the "Save as PDF" menu item. This translation
automatically turns each FrameMaker "alert" entry into an Acrobat
"note" hidden under a little black-and-white icon of a page with one
corner turned up.

Would anyone on this list have any instructions for
me? Is there a way to reset defaults for the "Save as PDF" conversion process?

conditional text insets

2008-04-26 Thread Austin Meredith

>We do not want to conditionalize the text inset content itself

We'd like to add our voice to the others who are urging you to
overcome this reluctance. We've ourselves faced this problem again
and again over the years and have never been able to gin up a way to
do this without actually putting in the dog labor of going back and
reprocessing all the text inset modules to rearrange the
conditionalization inside these text insets. There may be a better
world but this is the world we've got. There's always going to be
something that cannot be finessed and is going to require dog labor.

Hypertext links in Acrobat8 documents generated from FM8 don't work

Why ever would Adobe abandon FrameMaker? This is not just a
techwriter tool we're dealing with here, folks. A soon as Adobe adds
an internet browser to the sweet suite, and parses its boolian search
logic, and roundtrips full wysiwyg XHTML generation, they will have
created the one-package solution to everything that is going on in
cyberspace! Nobody else is anywhere near this close to that
one-package solution. They're poised to be masters of the known
universe. MSWord doesn't have the ghost of a chance of pulling off
some grand integration like this. FrameMaker will become the killer
app. We'll eventually have one tool in which we can create and
maintain web content, and then go browsing. But this is going to take
a little faith.

FM8 and Acrobat Pro 9

2008-06-05 Thread Austin Meredith
Acrobat Pro 9 is just being released. Since we presently distill our
FM8 files into PDFs with Acrobat8 -- should we upgrade immediately to
Acrobat9, or should we "wait for the dust to settle"?

FM8 and Acrobat Pro 9

2008-06-05 Thread Austin Meredith
The problems we are having with Acrobat Pro 8 are problems of 1.) the
very significant processing effort that is required, to re-distill an
updated FM8 file into an updated PDF suitable for posting to the
internet, and 2.) the frequency with which Acrobat Pro 8 suddenly
crashes. This processing is a real drag on our productivity. The
questions I should be asking, therefore, are 1.) has any FM user
found there to be a significant improvement in the convenience of
distillation, between Acrobat8 and Acrobat9? -- and 2.) is anyone
finding Acrobat 9 to be any more stable, that is, less crash-prone
during distillation, than Acrobat 8?

The unexplained crashes we get are of two sorts. One sort of crash is
the one we get in Acrobat Pro 8, during the process of distillation,
and then when we repeat our procedure, the distillation succeeds
without any further problem. The other sort of crash is the one we
get in the Adobe Reader, when we attempt to open the resultant PDF
across the internet. Here, by way of an example, is an Acrobat 8 PDF
that has been distilled out of a FM8 file, that has a history of
three times out of four crashing the Adobe Reader when an attempt is
made to access it on the internet using a fast cable connection (and
then with perhaps the fourth attempt, opening perfectly without any
problem): http://www.kouroo.info/kouroo/thumbnails/C/AlexanderChalmers.pdf

FM8 and Acrobat Pro 9

2008-06-06 Thread Austin Meredith

PDF Creation Add-on

2008-06-27 Thread Austin Meredith

>>FM8 installs the PDF Creation Add-on. Is it best to uninstall this

>Yes.

This is scary. We are presently using versions 8 of Adobe FrameMaker
and Adobe Acrobat Professional, after having used versions 7. We
upgraded FrameMaker7 before upgrading Professional7. We don't now
remember having *uninstalled* anything about FM before upgrading
Acrobat. If there is something wrong with our situation, what would
the problematic symptoms be? What should we do now?

How to create Acrobat bookmarks in FrameMaker

2008-06-28 Thread Austin Meredith
This is probably stupid but, so far, we haven't been able to figure
out how to mark up our FM8 files so that they will distill into
AcrobatPro8 documents that contain *automatically generated
bookmarks*. The Help pages don't seem to contain such instructions.
It would be so nice if someone with more experience would instruct
us, how to accomplish this!

Upgrade to Frame 8? (Fred Skillman)

2008-03-25 Thread Austin Meredith

>Upgrade to Frame 8? (Fred Skillman)

Fred, patch 273 took account of our open issues. We are not having
any problems at all subsequent to the successful installation of that
patch. All systems are go with Frame 8.0p273 on a WindowsXP system
with Service Pack 2. Dive in at the middle and swim both ways.

By the way, does anyone on this list know of a way to suppress the
gray alert dialog box that warns us that we are converting a FM7 file
into a FM8 file? Clicking past that gray dialog box a thousand times
a day does get a tad annoying (since our decision is always to accept
this conversion)!

Hypertext links in Acrobat 8 documents generated from FrameMaker 8

2007-12-18 Thread Austin Meredith
I've recently upgraded to FM8 and Acrobat8 and now the new links in
the Acrobat documents I am generating won't function.

I suspect I must have had some option set in my old Acrobat7 that I

generate still function. However, ADVANCED > DOCUMENT PROCESSING >
CREATE LINKS FROM URLS doesn't activate my new links. -- What toggle
have I forgotten about?

Hypertext links in Acrobat 8 documents generated from FrameMaker 8

2007-12-19 Thread Austin Meredith
Having recently upgraded on the XP PC from Adobe FrameMaker 7 and
Acrobat Pro 7 to FM8.0p266 and Acrobat Pro 8.1.1 and Adobe Reader
8.1.1, we can't get our distilled hypertext buttons to function
anymore. Our Kouroo project is dead in the water!

We've tried "View Generated PDF in Acrobat," and we've tried
"Generate PDF Bookmarks," and we've tried "Generate Tagged PDF," and
"Create Named Destinations for All Paragraphs," etc.

The routine, which worked fine in FM7 in distilling Acrobat7 docs,
but doesn't seem to be functioning for us in version 8, has been
while distilling to "Embed All Page Thumbnails," and to "Manage
Embedded Index," and to "Automatically generate web links on All
pages," and to add a document description under "Properties," and to
"Reduce File Size," and then to "Enable for Commenting and Analysis
in Adobe Reader."

However, now, whenever one punches a hypertext button on a web page
that we have generated, the error message we always get is "There was
an error while performing an action. Attempt to call a method that
has not been implemented." These are hypertext buttons that work fine
on the PC, in connecting one FrameMaker8 document to another
FrameMaker8 document -- but in between two distilled Acrobat8
documents on the web, none of them work at all.

An example of this would be the interplay between
http://www.kouroo.info/kouroo/thumbnails/G/TheGrimkeSisters.pdf and
http://www.kouroo.info/kouroo/thumbnails/W/TheodoreWeld.pdf

Please somebody -- tell me that you do this successfully, that it
does still work in 8??? Reassurance would help a lot at this point.

having recommended that we upgrade to the latest Adobe software? We
are rushing to take down from the internet the files we have posted
to our website in the past couple of weeks, files that are a
considerable embarrassment. And, we are sitting around wondering how
we can possibly recover from this -- is there a way that we can now
open, in FM7, the thousands upon thousands of files that have in the
past few weeks been touched by this FM8 abortion? Or, are we just dead?

Actually, Kanti, we are using FM8.0p266 and Acrobat Pro 8.1.1 and

don't work. However, Shlomo Perets of MicroType says he has known

his software, which he offers will shortly resolve this problem with
Unicode-encoded file paths and file names, at a cost of some $200.
I'll gladly take it out of my own paycheck.

We feel betrayed by Adobe. How could they have offered us an
"upgrade" that is so secretly crippled? For our project, this is like
sabotage. We've got my fingers crossed, that we're going to be able
to recover from this successfully. Even in the best of all possible
scenarios, after Shlomo distributes his new software there is going
to be a hell of a lot of work here, weeks and weeks of work,
re-distilling all these PDF files and uploading them again to the
internet website.

Hypertext links in Acrobat8 documents generated from FM8 don't work

2007-12-21 Thread Austin Meredith

>We are feeling as if Adobe has just sabotaged our entire 15-year
>project. How could they have offered an "upgrade" that destroys hypertext?

Our Kouroo project now has 212,974 files that have already been saved
as FM8 since we "upgraded" a few weeks ago, so going back to FM7
seems difficult. We are, however, beginning to scheme a feasible
"workaround" to give Adobe time to get its act together in regard to
hypertext and FM8. FM8 does allow us to save an FM8 file in the FM7
format, and FM7 does generate valid hypertext in an Acrobat document.
So, *if* we can have both FM8 and FM7 installed at the same time (if
there is a way to keep them from interfering with each other), and
*if* we don't use any UNICODE or other features that would be
destroyed in the retro-save as FM7 (and if Acrobat8.1 can still
handle hypertext), a possible "workaround" would be: to first save an
FM8 document as a FM7 document before attempting to generate any
Acrobat8.1 document with hypertext. That seems feasible if it's doable.

The three questions associated with this feasible "workaround" would
be: 1.) is there a way to have FM8 and still have FM7 also? --and,
2.) are there any new FM8 features that we cannot allow to be
destroyed by saving as FM7? --and, 3.) does the 8.1 version of
Acrobat still accept hypertext?

Does anyone have any thoughts about this? Are the above three items doable?

Hypertext links in Acrobat8 documents generated from FM8 don't work

2007-12-22 Thread Austin Meredith
OK, our chestnuts are pulled out of the fire, we have a way to
control the FM8 situation. There is a doable workaround. Adobe has
time to fix this hypertext problem of the relationship between the
latest version of their FrameMaker and the latest versions of their
Acrobat and Reader. Here's how to "Save as PDF" in FM8:

1.) For now, do not use any FM8-specific features such as UNICODE.
They won't translate back into FM7.

2.) Re-install FM7 on your system, alongside FM8. They seem compatible.

3.) For the time being, whenever you desire to distill a Reader PDF
file that preserves hypertext functionality, instead of "Save as
PDF," save your FM8 document as a FM7 Maker Interchange Format
Document, giving it a unique name. (Note: saving it as a FM7 .fm
document will get you nothing but an error message; you need to save
it as a FM7 .mif document.)

4.) Open your new FM7 .mif document with FM7 and then use "Save
as..." to save it as a PDF.

5.) Open and edit your new PDF with the latest version of Acrobat Pro.

Here's an example to show that it can work. I just used the above
workaround to create
http://www.kouroo.info/kouroo/thumbnails/H/ReverendFredericHenryHedge.pdf

If you click on the button "RELIGIOUS SOCIETY OF FRIENDS" on page 3
in the above URL, the functioning hypertext will take you properly to
our http://www.kouroo.info/kouroo/trends/Quakerism/19thCentQuakerism1.pdf

Say thank you, Adobe.

that the hypertext linkage between FM8 and PDF files has not yet been
implemented (by way of first saving a FM8 file as a FM7 MIF file
before distilling a PDF), the initial panic has subsided. It turns
out that it's not a big deal and our project can wait patiently for
Adobe to fix this.

I've noticed something else, however. I've always been in the habit
of using the locking/unlocking feature of FM, using the keystrokes
"Ctrl F l k" to transit the files back and forth between a locked
"use condition" to an unlocked "edit condition." However, in FM8, if
you do a "Ctrl s" save before you do the "Ctrl F l k Ctrl w" to lock
and close a file, your "Ctrl F l k" is wasted effort as the file
simply doesn't stay locked.

(If you can remember *not* to do a "Ctrl s" before doing your "Ctrl F
l k Ctrl w," then locking still works in FM8.)

So, is this a bug, or a feature, of FM8?

In the old days, there was a free thingie called "Frame Reader" or
something like that, that your users could use to access your work
product. It was a full version of FM free for download, but it was
save-disabled. Later on, when you printed from this, it came to be
that each printed page would bear a gray diagonal "trial copy"

Back in the days of this "Frame Reader," there was a purpose to the
locking/unlocking feature of FM. Now, however, with this bug (or
feature) in FM8, I'm not even bothering to lock and unlock the files
anymore! I'm simply telling my users, "For hypertext in an Acrobat
document, you can just click on a button, but for hypertext in a
FrameMaker document, you'll need to remember to hold down the control
key while you click on it."

Can anyone think of a reason why we need to file a bug report on
this? Can we now just let go of the lock/unlock thingie -- consider
it as a piece of our evolutionary history?

FrameMaker 10

2011-06-25 Thread Austin Meredith
We're definitely not betatesters or early adopters -- there is far too much
daily work that needs to be accomplished here, using the FrameMaker software
tool, to take risks with new and unproven versions. Except of course for the
sudden and too-frequent crashes, there's not anything in particular we need to
do with FrameMaker that Version 9 seems incapable of.
?Here's our question: now that Adobe has issued its first patch for FrameMaker
10 and now that we are familiar with Acrobat X, do you imagine that it would be
unproblematic for us to upgrade from FM9 to FM10 (unstructured, for a 64-bit
environment)? And, might this hopefully lessen the number of sudden crashes we
experience per workday?

Text insets (Martin Ley)

2011-03-05 Thread Austin Meredith
We?wouldn't even be able to?use FrameMaker if it weren't for insets
(incorporations by reference). They work perfectly for us. Sometimes a document
of ours will have literally thousands of?such live incorporations by
reference!?--We rely on?them the way a programmer?relies on?calls to a Call
Library.
?
Our big question is, when will the Internet people get smart enough to "get
with" insets, and finally grant us the same capabilities for
real-time-live-update insets in Internet coding (HTML, XML, etc.), as have been
available in FrameMaker?

FM8 crashing like it's WORD

2011-05-14 Thread Austin Meredith
> FM 8 on PC, Windows Vista, 32 bit system, 2.38 GHz CPU, 4 GB RAM.
> And Frame is crashing WAY too often.
?
I'm running FM9 on PC, Windows7 Ultimate, 64-bit, 3,33GHz CPU, 24GB RAM, and the
FM crashes have over a period of many months been training me to stay away from
a few things. For instance, I find that I very seldom apply a character format
or a paragraph format in the usual menu?manner, anymore, because that produces
so many annoying instant crashes and restarts. What I find myself doing --due I
suppose to?my being trained subliminally by the software-- is that I avoid the
menus and apply character formats and paragraph formats instead by *copying and
pasting*. Going to an existing character or paragraph format example, and
copying and pasting that format in the new location, simply does not ever
produce any of these annoying instant crashes and restarts! I mean, it is a pain
in the ass to do this and I do still get these annoying instant crashes --?but
my sense of it is that this is not happening nearly so often.

why is FM's UI so weird and buggy?

I have had to learn that to get my cursor over to the dock at the right, I must
first take the cursor up or down into the margin so as the cursor moves to the
right it *never passes across* the right hand document. (Every once in awhile I
forget and then DAMN, FrameMaker did it to me yet again!)

Save as HTML in FrameMaker 11

2013-10-20 Thread Austin Meredith
I'm using FrameMaker 9 Unstructured with Windows 7 to generate PDFs for the
internet, and I'm forever getting complaints from my users such as "Your live
links simply don't function, with Safari on my iPad!"

Once upon a time I attempted to generate HTML output but the only result I was
able to obtain, way back then, was unreadable garbage, unreadable garbage that
at my skill level I couldn't figure out how to fix. What would probably be my
experience *now* if I upgraded to FrameMaker 11 Unstructured and again attempted
to "Save as HTML"? With the new software, would this now produce reasonable HTML
output that I could then expect to be able to fine-tune? Or --my skill levels
being as low as they are-- would I probably still find myself in that same fix?

[Framers] Interference with FrameMaker2015's AcrobatDC PDF hotlinks, by the latest Safari browser

2016-02-03 Thread Austin Meredith
I'd like to thank Rick Quatro, on this list, for taking the time to
solve a problem that has been most vexing to me. For a number of years,
since Adobe purchased FrameMaker and discontinued the freebie
FrameReader, I have been reduced to using Acrobat to create PDFs to
distribute my work product to Thoreau scholars via my website
[1]www.kouroo.info. However, my various PDF documents on this website,
a number of thousands of them, are connected among one another by tens
of thousands of internal hotlinks, taking the user from one PDF
document, say a document about a book checked out from Harvard Library
by Henry Thoreau, to another PDF document, say a document I have
created about the life of the author of that book. All these hotlinks
are between one of the PDF documents I have personally created in this
protected space, and some other of the PDF documents I have personally
created in this protected space. None take the reader outside, into any
   danger.

Suddenly, however, the rules have been changed. Changed secretly,
without notification. Safari invalidated my hotlinks. When my users
click on the hotlinks, they are free to consider me some sort of fool
who does not know how to create such hotlinks, because nothing happens.
I became like that frustrated mime in the public park, who can't figure
out how to get out of the invisible glass box.

What Rick has helped figure out is that, in the latest versions of
Safari and Acrobat, each of my scholars must individually go into his
or her Safari browser's preferences/security settings, and specifically
instruct the program that he or she trusts my [2]www.kouroo.info
website. Then my PDF hotlinks continue to work -- exactly as they have
always functioned in Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser!

[Framers] Every other page is blank

2016-02-15 Thread Austin Meredith
Since I upgraded from FM9 to FM2015 unstructured on Win10, my every
other page is a blank (except for the page background). Text Flow A
exists only on alternate pages and when I turn on the text flow dotted
lines, it is revealed that every other page has no text flow frame at
   all.

It doesn't change anything, whether I set my document to be alternate
left and right pages or to be all right pages, or whatever.

Gosh, what am I doing wrong? It must be something very simple and very
   stupid. Be gentle with me.

[Framers] bug in FM2015 search/replace

2016-02-20 Thread Austin Meredith
BEWARE: There's a bug or gotcha in FM2015's search/replace. When it
encounters a double space and asks if you want this double space
replaced with a single space, it eats the final letter off the previous
word! In my instance, "raceme[space][space][m-dash]" was made into

Re: [Framers] Pod Font Size

2016-04-03 Thread Austin Meredith
Oran Petersen's discovery, that it is right-clicking on the Framemaker
master file in Programs(x86) > Adobe that reveals the Compatibility
tab, rather than right-clicking on the shortcut, has finally enabled us
to *locate* the elusive "Disable display scaling on high DPI settings"
   checkbox!
However, what we now find is that checking and unchecking this checkbox
does nothing whatever to enlarge the too-tiny font size of Frame pods.
I still must put on my 3-diopter pair of reading glasses, and must
bring my eyes right up next to the display screen (like two or three
inches from the monitor), in order to make out the tiny letters. (The
letters are just as *crisp* whether the checkbox is checked or empty,
but they are also just as *tiny*.) It turns out, this is not a
   solution.

The only solution that has worked for me, so far, is to have one
monitor set to 3840x2160 native resolution, for the work file itself,
and the other monitor degraded to 2560x1600, for displaying only the
   pods.

Re: [Framers] FM2015 pod font size

2016-03-30 Thread Austin Meredith
David Creamer of IDEAS Training has solved my problem of failing
eyesight! (I had purchased two large UHD monitors in order to continue
work in my old age despite cataracts, with FM2015 on Win10, only to
discover that despite being able to blow up the FrameMaker text print
size to 200%, 300%, whatever, the FM pod font size had been rendered
entirely too small to be legible. It had become like 5-point fontsize,
entirely unscaleable!) What David has led us to is the following:

   [1]http://www.danantonielli.com/adobe-app-scaling-on-high-dpi-displays-
   fix/

Be warned in advance that making such a change to your FM parameter
file will utterly trash every setting you have made to date in the
personalization of your installation. It will for instance trash your
desktop image! It will wipe all program icons you have installed in the
menu bar at the bottom of your screen! It will trash your choice of
browser, and your choice of search utility! It will clear away all your
"Favorites"! You will need hours and hours to go back and reset each
and every personalization you have chosen since you last installed your
operating system. Also, be warned that although David's correction
works to enlarge the font inside your pods, it does not enlarge the
font Adobe used for pod labels, such as "Find/Change," "f Catalog,"
etc. Those remain at Adobe's virtually illegible fontsize. (But I can
guess at this, based on the general appearance of the pod.)

Great thanks to David, and to IDEAS Training, for helping with this
problem. Now that I have spent this morning repersonalizing my
environment, I am prepared to go back to my work once again able to
   *see* what I am doing.

[Framers] Searching for content in FrameMaker files

2016-05-07 Thread Austin Meredith
I don't seem to be able to persuade the File Explorer of Windows 10 to
find Boolean content inside FrameMaker2015 files. I've tried all the
obvious tricks such as making certain that the file suffixes ".fm" and
".frame" are included in the indexing list, and deleting and rebuilding
that indexing list. File Explorer will find the name "Thoreau" if it is
part of the FrameMaker file's filename such as "ThoreauINDEX.fm" and
will indeed find the name "Thoreau" when it is *inside* a '.txt" or
other file, but refuses to find the name "Thoreau" for me when it is
inside a ".fm" or ".frame" file. What am I doing wrong? -Austin

My fantasy is that there has been a storm of protests from PDF users
and Adobe is in panic mode, struggling to fix the problem they've just
created. Does that sound like Adobe, or like a dream?

   > Which file format do you use for your images? Are all image formats

   Yes, they are uniformly blurred.

   > Do you get this effect with all files with such images?

Yes, suddenly all my new files are blurred like this.

   > Do you use RGB or CMYK? What happens, if you select the other colour
   mode?

I've always used RGB, so the first thing I tried was to use CMYK. That
   didn't help at all.

   > Do you know, if also other users with this Acrobat update get PDFs
   with blurry images?

   No, I don't know. I wish I did know.

   > When was this upgrade installed?

   Last Thursday night.

   > Does this relate only to FrameMaker, or also to Save as PDF from
   other applications, such as Word?

   I don't know. I wish I did know.

[Framers] SOLVED: Fuzzy images in "Save as PDF"

2017-07-26 Thread Austin Meredith
Problem solved, the images generated when I "Save as PDF" in FM to
Adobe Acrobat Pro are *no longer unbearably fuzzy.*

Here's what I think the problem was. Adobe issued a software update to
Acrobat Pro last week, and before they issued it of course they tested
it. And of course when they went to test it, they set the images
temporarily to "downsample=YES" because it wasn't images they were
testing for, and they didn't want to wait to render clear images. But
then when they released the software update, they *forgot to reset the
   parameters file* to "downsample-NO".

So, their software update last week overrode all my default image
settings in my local parameters file, resetting them to
"downsample=YES." This week, when I went to save a new file with "Save
as PDF" and set my PDF Job Options for that job as usual to "High
Quality Print," this setting was instantly overridden by Adobe's last
week software update's new downsample-YES default.

The bottom line is, if you experience this problem, simply reset your
local parameters file for Acrobat to "downsample=NO."

(And never trust anything with moving parts.)

[Framers] Save as PDF

2017-08-19 Thread Austin Meredith
I use "Save as PDF" in FrameMaker 2015 unstructured, to create Adobe
Acrobat Pro DC documents, and put them on the web at "www . kouroo .
info". They work fine with the Internet Explorer browser. Recently,
however, the Google Chrome browser stopped working, in that when it is
now used to open one of my PDF documents, the links generated by
FrameMaker, such as gotoframefitwin /kouroo/webpage.fm, no longer
   function.

Fortunately, there is a ready solution. There are now Google Chrome
browser extensions that teach the new Chrome to read Acrobat PDFs and
correctly interpret these FrameMaker links. There are a number of them,
   free, at

   [1]https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/pdf-viewer/oemmndcbldboieb
   fnladdacbdfmadadm

   and at

   [2]https://chrome.google.com/webstore/search/pdf%20viewer?hl=en

The problem seems to be that Google has done this to its very latest
versions of Chrome without warning, that these new PDF extensions are
as yet very poorly documented and hard to find, and that most users who
rly on the fast Chrome browser as their interface to the internet have
no clue even that they exist or that something has gone wrong. When
they try to access one of my PDFs now, they complain bitterly "Hey,
Austin, damn it, your links are broken!" They are not warned what it is
that is really going wrong -- that there is something they now need to
   install.

[Framers] Save as PDF

2017-08-20 Thread Austin Meredith
   > Thanks for the community-service alert, Austin.

   > Would it be useful/possible to incorporate this useful information
   about

   > the possibility of the problem reading the document on Chrome

   > in or with the document itself?

Unfortunately, no, that would simply not be possible for, as you can
see in this link, we have thousands upon thousands of such PDFs already
on the internet. For us to replace these existing materials with new
documents containing alerts and warnings would require a number of
years of labor and cost literally millions of dollars:

   [1]http://www.kouroo.info/kouroo/ActiveIndex.pdf

   > We had a different problem with Save as PDF.

   > We use alternate-row shading in tables. In some table cells,

   > seemingly randomly, the text goes behind the shading, becoming
   invisible.

   > We have no solution so we Print to PDF like in the old days.

Unfortunately, this PostScript solution gobbles up notes and footnotes
and references, suppressing them from the documents. Only Save as PDF
preserves the whole document with its authentications and scholarly
references. Imagine how unscholarly the following document would seem,
if we were to use Print to PDF and the PostScript engine were to
suppress, as it would, the following scholarly reminder:

DISAMBIGUATION: Harris of Cleveland, associated with John Brown, was a
different person from this James Henry Harris of Chatham and North
Carolina associated with John Brown. Yet a 3d James H. Harris, with no
known connection to John Brown, would be in a different black regiment
in the Civil War and would belatedly be awarded the Medal of Honor.

functionality. We have repeatedly been warned by the experts who know
about these things, that it would be foolish to attempt to put Adobe
Acrobat Pro DC and Adobe Reader on the same machine -- due to sloppy
programming by these two product teams, they will access and overwrite
each other's parameter files. Therefore I need to pose the question, is
that warning still correct, or by now has it become old scoop?

The problem is that although the Chrome browser may pick up and use the
Adobe Reader as an extension to read Adobe PDF files, it definitely
does not pick up and use Acrobat Pro DC. Since we are warned not to put
Adobe Reader on a machine having the Acrobat Pro DC software, this
makes it difficult to access Acrobat PDF documents using Chrome. We
would need to have one machine dedicated to generating the PDFs and
another machine dedicated to accessing them, no?

[Framers] Unable again to "Save as PDF"

2018-09-06 Thread Austin Meredith
We had updated to the latest Adobe FM (before FM19), and updated to the
latest Adobe Acrobat DC, and updated to the latest Microsoft Windows10
version, and we had again been successfully generating PDFs. Wow!

But that was last month. Now suddenly our setup will no longer generate
PDFs. We are suddenly right back to where we were before that Windows10
kerfuffle. The PDFs suddenly don't generate. Everything that had been
fixed has suddenly become again unfixed!

Does anyone understand what has happened?

Re: [Framers] Can't Save As PDF or Print to Adobe PDF Printer, Windows 10

2018-09-12 Thread Austin Meredith
Perhaps this can help the programmers figure out what has gone wrong
with "Save as PDF" in the Win10Pro (1803 build 17134.165 installed
8.8.2018) and FM2017 and Acrobat DC (18.011.20058) environment. The
very last time we have been able to generate a PDF was on September
7th, when we were able to generate the following file
