[Frameworks] 16mm industrial films in nyc

2011-10-11 Thread lj frezza
Hey Everyone,
I'm a filmmaker in Brooklyn working primarily with 16mm found footage. I was
just wondering if anyone had any films they'd be interested in
selling/trading. I've got a decently-sized collection, myself, and I'm just
looking for some specific subjects for a film I'm working on now.
Thanks
-LJ

P.S. I'm also looking for a reliable 16mm projector if anyone has one of
those they'd be willing to part with.

local pickup only, plz.

[Frameworks] BASEMENT MEDIA FEST #3 (2012) CALL FOR ENTRIES

2012-02-22 Thread lj frezza
Hey there, folks. The BASEMENT media festival is officially issuing to
you, the fine people of FrameWorks, this call for submissions.
The BASEMENT media fest is a low-fidelity film and video festival,
that focuses on shorts of a non-narrative nature. We accept
submissions of all formats, from hi-8 to 16mm to DV, as long as the
work focuses on the mediated aspect of motion picture recording.
In a world filled with 2K Cameras and IMAX, we celebrate the low-res
and the low-tech.
For more information on BASEMENT, including our past programs, visit
our website: http://basementmediafest.com.
And here's a link to our submission form, just in case you're
interested in that sort of thing:
http://basementmediafest.com/2012entryform.pdf
It's free to submit, and the DEADLINE is JULY 29th. Screening will
occur in late 2012 - more info to come.
Thanks folks,

Re: [Frameworks] BASEMENT MEDIA FEST #3 (2012) CALL FOR ENTRIES

2012-02-22 Thread lj frezza
Well, I suppose I have a two-part answer for you:
First-off, I apologize. The festival is basically completely organized
by just two people with full-time jobs and we haven't in the past been
able to respond to everyone who submitted. We're working on changing
that this year, and will be sending out an email to everyone who's
submission we receive, regardless of whether they get in to the
festival.
As for the tape, we aren't able to return submission materials to
filmmakers who send them in. We have absolutely no budget for the
festival, as the festival is free to submit to, and any fees for
screenings have gone entirely to cover the cost of the screening
venue. Due to this, we simply cannot afford the postage (not to
mention the time involved) to send submission materials back to
filmmakers. I'll make a note of this on our entry form going forward.
Additionally, we're only accepting submissionms on NTSC DVDs this
year.
This festival was started three years ago by a couple of guys who had
no experience running a festival. This whole thing is a big learning
experience for us, and I hope you'll bear with us.
Again, thanks for submitting and I'm sorry if you feel slighted in any way

[Frameworks] BASEMENT Media Fest in Brooklyn

2013-06-10 Thread LJ Frezza
Hello All,

The BASEMENT Media Fest is a survey of
contemporary artists working with lo-def, lo-tech, and lo-fi motion pix
techniques. Founded in response to the commercial race for hi-res and
true-to-life IMG quality, BASEMENT is a celebration of the mediated
experience as an aesthetic experience. Equal parts glitchd digital vidz,
fuzzy VHS, and grimy 16mm film, this year’s screening ought to plaza any
connoisseur of experimental .MOVs.

We'll be screening our first of two identical programs this Saturday
6.15.2013 at 7:30pm at the
Spectaclein
Williamsburg (the second program will be the same time on 06.23.13).
Admission is $5 and we'll be joined by artist Clint Enns who will answer
questions and generally hang out after the screening.

For more info, and to see a trailer for the program, check out our
website
.

Thanks.

Re: [Frameworks] Current Trend in Film Festivals

2013-09-02 Thread LJ Frezza
Most of the more established festivals still send me confirmation of
reciept as well as formalized rejection emails.

However I do think there may be factor at work, and it has to do with
emerging technologies on the programmer-end of things.
Thanks to contemporary communications technologies and the lowering prices
of high quality digital exhibition equipment, I think there are a lot more
small, DIY festivals emerging around the globe. I, myself, co-run one by
the name of the BASEMENT Media Fest. Ours in particular is free and we do
everything in our free time. Its going on its fourth year, and we've
learned a great deal in that time. Sadly, in the past, we have neglected to
send out rejection emails as well as confirmation that we've received
works. I think this was mostly due to our lack of prior experience and lack
of free time (and occasionally, because filmmakers fail to provide us with
their contact info OR their info is illegible).

Anyway, I think its really easy nowadays to organize a film festival (or at
least easier than it has been) - you can post an open call online and
submissions just flood in. But I do think a downside of this is you have a
lot of programmers entering the field who are maybe unfamiliar with a lot
of the protocol OR who have underestimated the time-commitment necessary to
organizing such an event.

That's my $0.02, at least.

If you have a computer, I'm from the school that says you don't even need a
camera. You can try re-editing footage from a number of sources like
YouTube, DVDs, etc.
It's a lot cheaper, especially if you can finagle yourself some free
editing software.

Re: [Frameworks] New filmmaker

2014-05-05 Thread LJ Frezza
Also, its a bit more searching in this digital age, but you can do the same
thing with a couple of VCRs and a TV (and thrift store tapes) or some film
rewinds, a viewer, and a splicer (and discarded 16mm films).

Re: [Frameworks] Martin Arnold Animated Gifs

2014-05-09 Thread LJ Frezza
Right off the top of my head, I do think that audio is incredibly important
to Arnold's work, and unfortunately, there is no way to include audio in a
gif (yet...), so in that sense I suppose it could be considered a
compromise.
Unfortunately, my computer isn't loading the gifs that I assume are on that
page, so I can't offer any informed criticism, though I assume they are
re-mixes and in that sense, I don't think they are a compromise of his work
since they by no means are stand-ins for the originals.

Re: [Frameworks] Martin Arnold Animated Gifs

2014-05-09 Thread LJ Frezza
Ha, I didn't realize the text on that page was in fact a couple of links.

So, I do think that the alienating effect of the original pieces, based
primarily on the repetition and how it plays against our expectations
(based on the narrative conventions of the original work), is kind of lost
since the gif is a medium of repetition. In this sense, they resemble most
gifs adapted from motions picture media.
The fact that this alienating effect is "bypassed" in this way, though, is
very interesting and in that sense I think these gifs are an incredibly
interesting commentary on the importance of medium and the conventions that
surround each medium in a culture.

[Frameworks] BASEMENT Media Fest #5 - Call For Entries

2014-08-07 Thread LJ Frezza
Hello Frameworkers:

*Here*, in this very email, is contained information on how to submit to
one of the most exciting and confusing film festivals of our age - the
*BASEMENT
Media Fest* . Follow me down below for some
elaboration

~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~

*BASEMENT is an annual, touring screening of contemporary lo-fidelity
experimental cinema. *We have no restrictions on length or content, as long
as you feel your work fits our festival's theme. Our entry criteria are
loose, but our will is strong.

*We charge no entry fees, and the deadline for submissions is 12.31.2014.
Our entry form can be found here
.*

BASEMENT is organized by just two people. These two people watch all the
submissions and put together the program every year. They also organize all
of the screenings in each year's tour (with help from local programmers <3).

This year, BASEMENT has screened (and will screen) in New York City,
Baltimore, Boston, Winnipeg, Toronto, Milwaukee, Chicago, and Austin (with
more to come...?). We might even expand next year, with a little help from
our friends. Current tour info can be viewed here
.

~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~

This is as DIY as it gets, folks. Send in your movies for a chance to
do-it-yourself with us.

Love you lots,
-LJ

[Frameworks] Film & Analog Video Gear in Chicago - Make Me an Offer I Can't Refuse

2017-01-26 Thread LJ Frezza
hello framedwellers. i've got a sizable lot of celluloid film & analog
video gear for your purchasing pleasure:

2 Moviescop Desktop 16mm Film Viewers (one needs a new lightbulb - but buy
them both in case you need parts down the road)
1 Samsung VHS Camcorder (battery's shot, but works with wall adapter -
pretty much every battery for cameras of this era is dead at this point)
1 Panasonic Handicam Hi-8 Camcorder (FREE, but maybe non-working)
1 Singer Instaload 16mm Film Projector (formerly owned by the NYC Board of
Education)
1 Set of Film Rewinds (Made in Chicago, Illinois)
1 Pristine 16mm Guillotine Splicer (Made in Italy - Molto Bene)
1 16mm Cement Splicer (for conforming film negatives - very pro)
1 Digital Video Mixer (from a bygone era - lots of nostalgic transitions)
2 16mm Split Reels
3 16mm Conventional Reels
4 Sets of Stereo Computer Speakers (speak up, i can't hear you)
1 16mm Film Titled "Universe" (featuring sick animations and narration
by William
Shatner )

also for leisure:
1 SNES Video Game Console (with 2 controllers, as well as Super Mario
All-Stars & Donkey Kong Country)

MAKE ME AN OFFER ON ANYTHING YOU WANT.
my primary motivation isn't turning a profit, so much as making sure this
gear gets to a good home (having said that, i'm underemployed, so money is
nice).

see you soon.
