How do I do wide-reinstall ? That's nowhere a correct terminus technicus or established word. It just means that, for example, if you update one small library that is incorporated by a dependency of a dependency of a library part of Gtk, you need to recompile everything in relation to Gtk, all Gtk programs, libraries and dependencies. Manually tracing down the dependency could be possible, and maybe "manual overrides" with symlinks and libmap.conf can work, but if you update something here, in conclusion something there, it could lead to even more trouble, forcing you to do much more updates than you are willing to perform. > I don't mind > pulling in and building a few more ports as long as it is not the whole > GNOME2 metaport. Exactly my experience with some libjpeg update some years ago. :-) The rule usually is: If you update a port others depend on (read: depend on a specific version), you also need to update those ports. Mixing versions doesn't seem to be a good idea. > So I > guessed that the canned version of GNOME in the installation DVD had a > dependency on libpng.so.6. But Mozilla applications > like Firefox and Thunderbird present a peculiar problem - the buttons on > the Tool bar/Menu bar do not have any image on them. It seems that there is some "library collision". If you update things, update _all_ of them, in order to avoid version trouble. The best approach (in your case) would be: Install the OS, do not install anything from ports yet. Get the ports tree. Update it to the recent version. Now start installing stuff, and do it from the _same_ ports tree. Alternative: If you go with the programs installed from the media (e. g. the DVD), use pkg_add to get binary installed applications. In case you insist on compiling, get the ports tree of the _state of your installation_ (i. e. the tarball from the DVD) and use that. Do not update it. In this case, you can easily mix compiling from source and installing via binary packages. This alternative is not suggested now. :-) > While this is not > exactly a catastrophe, it is rankling to say the least. Maybe some > gentleman has faced this problem and has sorted it out. Problem with libpng + Mozilla applications on FreeBSD 8.3
Hi All, I recently purchased a laptop (Intel Pentium dual core) and installed FreeBSD 8.3-i386 on it using the 'All' canned distribution. I then downloaded the latest ports tarball and started building them. Some of the ports required a newer version of the graphics/png port, so I did a deinstall and reinstall in graphics/png. This removed the previous binary libpng.so.6 and placed version libpng15.so.15 in its stead. Things went wrong here - the GNOME desktop started crashing with the panel not working and practically all desktop icons gone. So I guessed that the canned version of GNOME in the installation DVD had a dependency on libpng.so.6. I reinstalled FreeBSD 8.3, and copied /usr/local/lib/libpng.so.6 to /usr/lib/libpng.so.6 before building the ports a second time. This time things went a lot more smoothly. GNOME works. But Mozilla applications like Firefox and Thunderbird present a peculiar problem - the buttons on the Tool bar/Menu bar do not have any image on them. While this is not exactly a catastrophe, it is rankling to say the least. Maybe some gentleman has faced this problem and has sorted it out. If anyone can provide a hint on how to fix the problem, I would be grateful indeed. The use of Parenting Coordinators is a relatively new intervention to manage high-conflict custody cases. Parents retain and compensate a clinician to arbitrate ongoing child-related disputes either by private agreement or by Court Order. That clinician then becomes the Parenting Coordinator. What does the Parenting Coordinator do? The Parenting Coordinator works directly with the parents to help them communicate more effectively and avoid conflicts about child-related issues. Parents who are constantly in court about child-related issues (such as a holiday visitation schedule or the sharing of information about a child’s academic or medical developments) might benefit from opinions and guidance to help make communication more effective. In addition, the parenting coordinator mediates issues, and when the parents are unable to agree, the parenting coordinator is often given the power to arbitrate what the result should be. Ultimately, the court has the final say over child custody and visitation issues, but a Parenting Coordinator can drastically reduce the need to go to court and therefore reduce conflict for the children in families involved in such disputes. CUPS should provide a default printer ("lp" is the default name, but it can be anything else). You can define the environment variable PRINTER to point to the desired default printer which will be addressed whenever you print from inside an application. In my case, % echo $PRINTER Laserjet shows that all lp* commands will address "Laserjet", and all application data will go to that printer spool. > Take Firefox or > gedit for instance. How can I print from those apps using File>Print > menu? I need to add stuff to those dialogs which open from File>Menu. No. You don't need an individual printer driver for each application. :-) Basically, printing from an application means that this program will create the print content in PS format and send it to the printer spool (identified by the default printer name). From there on, the printer filter (CUPS in your case) will pick up the PS data and hand it to the printer, or convert it to the printer's language (e. g. PCL) and then send this result to the printer. When I go File -> Print... in Firefox, "PostScript/default" is the name of the printer. Set properties if needed (e. g. A4 paper size, margins, whatever you need). After pressing Enter, the print job should show up in your printer queue. % lpq Laserjet is ready and printing Rank Owner Job Files Total Size 1stpoly 541 (standard input) 555466 bytes Note that CUPS may require "lpstat", not the standard "lpq". Some applications provide a temporary file name, or the name of the input file; in case of Firefox you can see that the printing content has been sent to the printer spool via standard input. > There are only two choices "Printer to File" and "Print to LPR". This should be correct. > Printing to LPR does not work at all as I think it references /bin/lpr > instead of /usr/local/bin/lpr. If you use CUPS, you need to use its print job entry tools, /usr/local/bin/lp*. In the "properties" dialog window, the print command of my Firefox (2.0.0.20_9,1) is: lpr ${MOZ_PRINTER_NAME:+'-P'}${MOZ_PRINTER_NAME} This is the lpr found FIRST in the path. % which lpr /usr/bin/lpr For CUPS, it does have to be the other lpr. If you use CUPS *INSTEAD* of the default system tools, there's an option in "make config" that allows you to overwrite the system tools in the default location. You can, however, work with symlinks to "redirect" the commands to their location in the local/ subtree, or simply rename the system tools lp* to lp*.sys. > (Snapshot attached) Nothing attached. :-) > How can I add more > options in this dialog? Printing from inside the applications in FreeBSD 8.1 with CUPS
Hello FreeBSD fans, After a lot of work, I managed to get my printer work with CUPS with appropriate filters. Now, I can print the test page using http://localhost:631 and also I can print any postscript file from command-line. cat ~/MyPostscriptFile.ps | /usr/local/bin/lp Note that I can not print using simple "lp" command as there a "lp" in /bin/lp. How can I print from inside the applications? Take Firefox or gedit for instance. How can I print from those apps using File>Print menu? I need to add stuff to those dialogs which open from File>Menu. There are only two choices "Printer to File" and "Print to LPR". Printing to LPR does not work at all as I think it references /bin/lpr instead of /usr/local/bin/lpr. (Snapshot attached) How can I add more options in this dialog? Right now, in order to print I choose Print to File "as PostScript" and use command line cat PostScriptFile | /usr/local/bin/lp to print. Thanks > very much, Bill No. FreeBSD can run many Linux applications under emulation (and possibly some Sco applications, but that code branch has rotted due to disuse). It can't run Mac OS X applications though. Despite certain similarities between FreeBSD and the unix underpinnings of Mac OS X (darwin) i's not possible to run even a command-line program from Mac OS X on a FreeBSD box. Not that that's a particularly interesting thing to do. Obviously what you want to run are all those nice graphical apps written in cocoa and whaterver else is flavour of the month at Apple. There is simply *no* chance of that: the graphical environment is Apples' proprietary code, and they aren't going to be releasing it any time soon. Without the graphical layers, trying to get a Mac application running is an exercise in futility. Why don't you explain what exactly you're trying to achieve: free alternatives to most Mac applications are generally available. They won't be anything like as slick, and functionality will only be approximately the same, but they might do. Gaining information, especially those that have a certain worth (such as corporate data), is one important goal of criminals across the whole Internet. Offering opportunities, given by the fact that such "online live storage" clients and servers run MICROS~1 software (which is very well known for its high quality, haha), may turn such data silos into interesting targets. I'm sure that criminals have already found out about this fact, they're just waiting for more and more corporate "decision carriers" to adopt to all these modern techniques: "If we store our valueable data on those web servers, it will save us backup costs!" Which is why you have ed(1) - both in /bin and in /rescue - and /rescue/vi (although that needs a bit of tweaking due to the /etc/termcap problem). Bear in mind that /usr/bin/vi is over 300K, compared to the whole of /bin which is ~950K (if you avoid double-counting entries like /bin/csh and /bin/tcsh which are hardlinks to the same file), so you need to convince people who think /bin should stay small to let it grow by a third to save people learning ed(1). It doesn't work. The volume > control applet still complains no sound device has been configured. The fact that /dev/sndstat exists means that there is a sound driver that works. From the contents you can see that it is indeed the snd_hda driver ("HDA Realtek ALC885 "). You can also see that there are four sound outputs. Currently the digital HDMI is the default. You can configure the sound hardware through sysctls. If you run "sysctl hw.snd" you'll see a list of things you can change. With 'sysctl -d' you can see what a particular sysctl does. In this case one that is interesting is 'hw.snd.default_unit'. The different outputs in /dev/sndstat will be connected to different sockets on the machine (e.g. front/back panel). Try setting hw.snd.default_unit to 1, 2 or 3 and see if that helps. It could be that you have to unload and reload the snd_hda module after setting the default channel. You might also have to restart the volume control applet. > /dev/ums0 does get created I if plug in the mouse after the login > prompt has appeared. Ok. I think it should be a bug that the mouse isn't properly detected when connected at boot, but since the USB stack has been replaced in 8-CURRENT, I don't know if anyone is willing to go bughunting in the 7.x USB stack. > But the mouse would behave crazy till I changed the Xorg generated > xorg.conf's setting of ZAxisMapping from "4 5 6 7" to "4 5". No sound, no mouse and now X applications won't start
Hi Roland, Looks like nobody at freebsd-questions has any answers for me. Maybe 7.2-x86 doesn't like newish amd hardware. Anyway, here are the contents of /dev/sndstat : FreeBSD Audio Driver (newpcm: 32bit 2007061600/i386) Installed devices: pcm0: at cad 0 nid 1 on hdac0 kld snd_hda [MPSAFE] (1p:1v/0r:0v channels default) pcm1: at cad 0 nid 1 on hdac1 kld snd_hda [MPSAFE] (1p:1v/1r:1v channels duplex) pcm2: at cad 0 nid 1 on hdac1 kld snd_hda [MPSAFE] (1p:1v/1r:1v channels duplex) pcm3: at cad 0 nid 1 on hdac1 kld snd_hda [MPSAFE] (1p:1v/1r:1v channels duplex) I tried snd_hda, even though it's listed as the driver for Intel HDA, not Realtek HDA on AMD hardware. It doesn't work. The volume control applet still complains no sound device has been configured. /dev/ums0 does get created I if plug in the mouse after the login prompt has appeared. But the mouse would behave crazy till I changed the Xorg generated xorg.conf's setting of ZAxisMapping from "4 5 6 7" to "4 5". I have still more problems. Qt4 applications are missing pixmaps/icons
Dear Sirs, all of my installed Qt4-applications are missing pixmaps/icons for knobs and menus - the mouse-sensistive highlighting and literals are working finde, but no pixmaps/icons. Our environment is mostly KDE/Gnome free, so I suspect missing pixmap-ports or something from the multimedia repositories. Maybe there is simply a missing environment variable, but I do not know and I'm a newbie regarding Qt4 and its sibblings. Preserving X forwarded applications
I'm looking for a solution similar to the screen utility, but for X11. I want, for example, to burn a cd on a remote computer using some GUI application. If, for any reason, the network goes down while burning, I suppose I lose the whole thing. Same thing goes when editing a document. I know that I can launch a VNC/NX server, but X forwarding is a much more comfortable solution. Is there any way to make sure a X forwarded application won't die when my session is disconnected? Hi Jyun-Yi, I am using bash. And XMODIFIERS, GTK_IM_MODULE and QT_IM_MODULE variables are all set to the values you wrote. But in QT applications the prompt window doesn't pop up as in GTK ones. Hello All: I'm curious if there is any timeline for the correct display of IPv6 addresses in various displays. In particular, I'm interested in being able to see a full address in 'who' and 'netstat' so I can track connections to the server. Presently, the display shows: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ who mksmith ttyp0Oct 16 13:26 (2001:468:1420:f:) [EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ netstat -a Active Internet connections (including servers) Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address (state) tcp6 0 52 www6.ssh 2001:468:1420:f:.52619 ESTABLISHED t The full address includes another 64 bits or the whole host portion. Is this a bug, something in progress, or by design? It matters when a build machine links with a stale version, but packages it with the current version dep in +CONTENTS. This will not happen with direct dependant, but will happen if the dependency is further down the chain. > If you follow the UPDATING instructions for when to do `portupgrade > -fr' and keep you ports up to date, you shouldn't need to worry. Except that portupgrade -fr ignores HOLD_PKGS and I'll risk getting a non-working Xorg installation. Also, I think with the introduction of UPDATING the need to not break things got less important and at the same time more people started to automate upgrading ports, because we got spoiled with a stable almost never breaking ports tree and multi-core machines. True. /usr/local/lib/compat/pkg > Applications that depend on updated libraries get version-bumped when > the library major version gets changed Not true. Only direct dependants get version bumped and not consistently either. To recompile all dependants against the latest version of a library, one has to find out which port the older version in /usr/local/lib/compat/pkg belongs to and forcibly upgrade all deps of that package, using `portupgrade -fr'. I use the following little php script to identify programs/libraries still using old libs: #!/usr/local/bin/php -q /dev/null| grep compat/pkg'; $search_paths = array('bin', 'sbin', 'lib', 'libexec'); chdir($localbase); foreach($search_paths AS $path) { echo("==> $path\n"); $files = glob("$path/*"); foreach($files AS $file) { $check = shell_exec(sprintf($cmd_fmt, $file)); if( empty($check) ) continue; // pretty print reformat $check = preg_replace('/^.*?=>/m', "\t\t=>", $check); echo("\t$file depends on:\n$check"); } } ?> Given time, I could probably come up with something fully automated, but in practice, it boils down to 2 or 3 libraries, usually of the sort gettext, expat, vorbis, xml/xslt. It's not full-proof, because some paths aren't searched, for example /usr/local/openoffice, just adjust the search_paths array if you need to. -- Mel ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

How to check applications vs. libraries
Hello, I am used to install FreeBSD applications by using the port collection. I also update regularly (twice a month or something) the apps, using 'portupgrade -a -N' on a refreshed port collection. Here are my questions: - How can I check that the apps that have been build with certain libraries still work when some of the libs have been updated? - Is it possible then to rebuild the selected set of apps that have been 'corrupted' by the library upgrade (classicaly from liba.1 to liba.2)? If yes, how? or in other words, is there an equivalent to the Gentoo Linux 'revdep-rebuild' function? I never experience this problem outside Gnome, whether I'm using screen or several virtual terminals. It's really strange. Anyway, I hope someone out there has some ideas. Thanks very much in advance. -- Ned Ruggeri PS I'll include my ~/.vimrc file: autocmd! set nocompatible syntax on set showmatch set number set backspace=2 autocmd BufRead *.c set cindent ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

mato wrote: > > Do you think I could supply raw disk device directly to Qemu ?? As I understand it, you HAVE TO use a raw disk for qemu at present, though I cannot recall the reason for it right now. But this will not help you "make use of existing Windows (XP) installation". I believe the OS itself, at the very least, must be installed by qemu - correct me if I am wrong. In any case, the following instructions work for me: http://www.freebsdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=44204 -- Tore ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

It's not _designed_ to work that way, but given the fact that "everything is a file" in Unix, it's entirely possible that it will work.
