You want something like a Portmaster or Lantronix device that will
provide serial consoles over SSH

http://www.lantronix.com/device-networking/external-device-servers/

Or a small computer like a netbook running sshd with a USB to serial
adapter and cu(1).

If you had two systems located near each other in a data center, each
could act as the SSH serial console terminal for the other.

Sounds like you are looking for something like SOL (serial over LAN) which
can be setup with IPMI. Google should help you find more info on setting
up IPMI.

Hi Cassandra,

I certainly don't speak for FreeBSD, however I don't believe you would need
to arrange any price to put a listing on this page.

If you would be so kind to email the text and a pointer to the website, I,
or many other capable documentation specialists, would be happy to add it to
the website listing.

I hope this helps, and look forward to seeing the contribution.

Thanks!

You do realize that this email is being archived on any number of online
archives that the FreeBSD project has no control over, and that any of
them may list your email address unobfuscated.

While I can't speak for the project, I feel that obfuscating email
addresses is a weak and obsolete protection from harvesting. It's trivial
to make a screen-scraper translate "at" to "@", and even if the method
of obfuscating is more clever than that, if it's consistent and a larger
number of email addresses are available after breaking it, well ... you
get the idea.

Far better to complain to the ISP where the email originated. That's
someone who can actually do something about the problem.

Jeezze Louise!

In the first place, I didn't even know that my name or e-mail address were
listed on that page, and I was really rather surprised to find that they
were. Why the bleep am _I_ on there? Yea, I've hacked free software
from time to time in my career... more than just a little... but I really
can't recall having ever ``contributed'' to FreeBSD in any significant or
meaningful way. I mean I'm honored to be listed in with such illustrious
company, but in all modesty, I don't deserve to be.

But anyway, regardless of that, I have to ask: (1) Why the bleep are so
many e-mail addresses listed on that page in plain text, and without any
sort of spammer harvesting protection whatsoever? And (2) who should I
gripe to about this sorry state of affairs? webmaster(at)freebsd.org?

I don't expect the email addresses to be protected by captchas or anything
that convoluted, but the webmaster certainly could have at least replaced
`@' with `(at)' or some such thing.

So did anybody else get that same spam?

Interesting. I'm reaching the website through SSH without problems:

Firefox -> Privoxy -> ssh -> sshd -> www.freebsd.org

In related news, I've been using a Privoxy filter to fix the
worst rendering issues for several years now, and I'm considering
adding it to the port as well.

After all it doesn't look like www/91539 is going to get fixed any
time soon. As the archives will show, the problems were already known
before the redesign went live, but nobody cared back then either.

www.freebsd.org mirrors and cgi

2008-05-30 Thread Dimiter Ivanov
Hello, i found out that the cgi scripts from the official site
(www.freebsd.org)
does not work on the mirrors.
They are present but the webserver returns the source-code instead of
executing them.
I tested with the script for searching the ports, I tried several
mirrors with the same results.

Is this desired behavior?

I did that a few weeks ago and it didn't help. I don't think HP plans
to fix this. When the Linux community originally complained about this
problem about a year ago, pointing out that HP claims to support
Linux, HP told them to take a hike because the dc7700 is not on their
list of systems that they support Linux on. So at that time, HP had no
interest in making anything but Windows run on it. I don't know if HP
has softened their stance on that issue at all.

If you are planning to use them as workstations, you might be happier
with i386. There are still some apps that don't work under amd64. If
you are looking at servers, I haven't done any performance tests on
this thing so I can't tell you how suitable it would be (although if
there is some specific and reasonably easy test you'd like me to run I
wouldn't mind doing that).

I did see references to this workaround, but was hoping that there might have
been something "hot off the presses" I could try to work with..,

Will give it a bit of time to see what develops - there *are* "other options"
available to us, but it'd be great to maintain FreeBSD presence where possible.

I believe the status is "the problem is understood but the solution
will take a lot of time."

I have one of those idiot boxes and FreeBSD i386 boots fine on it, and
runs mostly well, so if that's acceptable to you, that's the
workaround. The only problems I've had with i386 are that the video
card is a bit goofy (I've mostly solved that) and the sound system
acts strange (which I haven't had time to investigate), but other than
that it seems to run fine. But I won't voluntarily have anything to do
with another HP computer if I can avoid it -- this thing didn't even
have correct Windows drivers for some of its hardware.

panic: No BIOS smap info from loader: http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=111955

2008-03-07 Thread Stacey Roberts
Hello,
Is anyone aware if this issue is fixed in FreeBSD 7.0-RELEASE / STABLE?

I've been trying to get FreeBSD-7 amd64 installed on an HP dc7700p workstation
at work, but the installation CDs always fail with the error: panic: No BIOS
smap info from loader.

My case appear exactly as is referenced in the above PR filing, but various
google searches of other people's experiences revealed this problem still
happening as of this week - that is, after the release of 7.0.

Does anyone have any idea as to where this is heading, or if there's a call out
for users to submit more information, or volounteer to test suggested
workarounds?

Thanks.

I have this problem only with Opera browser. Other browsers are working.
Which browser are you using ?

I think there might be an issue with Opera and IPv6: since
www.freebsd.org has an IPv6 record it may be trying to use that and
failing to fall-back to IPv4 if it can't establish a connection.
However if .org fails and .cz works with the same browser then I don't
know what the issue could be, since both of those sites use IPv6.

It don't. When you click the diagnose problem it does it's usual
IPv6 DNS lookup first. They probably assume if the admin got
the window scaling thing wrong they got the DNS thing wrong too.

If you have physical access to the machine you can run whatever
you want on it, no matter what the system administrator does. You
might have to jump through some hoops to do so.

There are also a surprising number of packages out there that
require the user to have administrative software. One of our
customers runs Timberline Software (an accounting package I
believe, fortunately I don't work directly with them) and that
will not work properly unless the user is an administrator.

And yes we have told them the software is poorly written and
to dump it and no they don't want to switch.

Routers shouldn't care about TCP windows so I guess they're actually
referring to the firewalls on NAT-routers.

What I don't get is why a TCP Window problem affects DNS. It's not
mentioned in the Wikipedia article or the referenced tech-recipes.com

To check if it's an problem with IPv6, could you try accessing
http://www.ipv6.org or http://www.kame.net ? You could try running
traceroute to check for routing problems to see where the problem is.

While his reply may not have been the most cordial that I have seen, it was
nevertheless quite on point. I have used Vista and IE7 to connect to FBSD
without incident. It therefore becomes evident that the problem is germane to
you rather than the whole FBSD group at large.

Did you actually read the link given to you in an earlier post? You might also
try contacting your ISP and see if there is a problem there. You could also
just use another browser that is more tolerant than IE7 appears to be in this
incident.

If you reply again, please lose the 'top posting' format. It makes following

It makes following
your replies far more trouble than it is worth.

Unfortunately, Firefox isn't always an option, especially on e.g.

Lisandro -

What Rob really meant to say is simply this - while the Op has
an issue with IE7 and the FreeBSD website, the Op's issues are beyond
the scope of this list.

The Op's IE7 issues don't belong here, within a FreeBSD list.
Perhaps what Rob also meant was, that perhaps the Op should seen help
on Microsoft driven lists and more to the point, Internet Explorer.

What you "could" have done (as mentioned by your words of
adding value-added replies) was to reinforce to the Op that indeed the
FreeBSD site (US) was and is indeed up and working.

So, even though I didn't tell Vista to use IPv6 for www.freebsd.org, that's
what it found first. Thankfully, I'm IPv6 enabled on my laptop so I can reach
the site. It appears that the UK site is not advertising IPv6 yet so you can
still reach it.

Here is another link directly from Microsoft that might have more options for
disabling IPv6 in your Vista machine.

netsh interface teredo set state disabled

That disables teredo for the entire system. I don't think you can just disable

I don't know how to disable IPv6 in IE. But for Firefox:
1) you type "about:config" into the address line at the top
2) then in the filter/search field you type "ipv6"
3) you see a line with "network.dns.disableIPv6 ..."
4) you click with right mouse key and choose "Editing"
5) type "true" into the value field
6) have fun

Try disabling IPv6 in either your browser or your operating system,
or use a proxy that only does IPv4.

After troubleshooting from all angles this problem i have run out of
imagination/sense. I loaded a machine with Windows Vista a work and try
accessing the www.freebsd.org website. The web site didn't load, yet I try
again in 10 other machines to see if it was a machine issue. Lastly I try

OK ;)

I'm located in Spain. From the office I can connect directly, without
any problems. But not from my home.

Is there any kind of load balancer or virtual server or something in
the freebsd site that could be working wrong?

I tried just now:
-

traceroute to www.freebsd.org (32.1.4.248), 30 hops max, 40 byte packets

(and it didn't work).

Right now, it works:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ ping www.freebsd.org

32.1.4.248 is an AT&T address, and I don't think
freebsd.org should ever be there (do we have a Florida
mirror?). 69.147.83.33 is Yahoo!, and I! think!

DNS problems/poisoning, perhaps?

Is that just one machine, or a cluster in a load balancing setup?
You may not be pinging the same physical machine all the time.

Other times it's died, but not in yahoo -- I have access to some

Maybe it could be due to some problems in proxies or firewalls:

Sure it does. ping resolves address via DNS. Which is why I'm more
thinking of bogus HTTP_PROXY (which fetch(1) would show) or an ISP forced
transparent proxy which uses a stale DNS record. 15 days ago the website
outage and sparked a load of me too mails on this list. I haven't checked if
DNS was updated at the time, but it makes sense.

Hi

I write this mail cause from 15 days ago (more or less) I can't connect to
www.freebsd.org typing the address on Firefox. Pings are resolved and if I
type the IP in the address bar, I get the main page, but then all the links
in which I click on are timeout.

At work I can access so I would like to know if I have to call my ISP (but
the DNS seems to work because of the ping) or maybe you're filtering some
IP's

Do not hesitate to contact me if you need further information.

Sorry for the stupid formatting, but, for the moment, I am forced to use
braindead Outlook as my email client. :-(

DNS has nothing to do with pings. It is used to resolve hostnames to IP
addresses. It appears that DNS is not working for you, at least in the case
of www.freebsd.org. Can you resolve other sites? For example, can you get
your browser to load www.yahoo.com?

Re: http://www.freebsd.org site unreachable

2007-09-15 Thread Wojciech Puchar

I've confirmed (through a friend) in England it's not accessible either.

I'm surprised they wouldn't have redundancies to prevent this from
happening. Round robin DNS with collocation at least.

There is a kind of redundancy. The FreeBSD website is mirrored in many
countries. I hardly have problems with www.nl.freebsd.org.

I wonder why so many people still use the main site, while there are a
lot of mirror sites.

anyway - when it's too difficult for people to do that what about slight
modification of http server on main site?

use geo_ip and redirect.

guess what my mirror did after the original went down.

It also went down.

Misconfiguration it says.

Some mirrors seem to be perfect mirrors.

I must really say that the mirrors are less reliable than the original.

Using mirrors still makes sense as the response is faster and it also
offloads the original.

It seems to work now. With many of the FreeBSD folks "mid-flight" to
Copenhagen, for EuroBSDCon 2007, it seems quite nice that after a few
hours the site is back up :)
