Also, any tips or pointers on getting HDHomeRun and freevo working would
be great. I saw some earlier posts from someone trying to set it up,
but it wasn't clear to me how successful that was.

I'm on Debian, running lenny (aka oldstable), which has freevo 1.8.1-3.
I can get 1.9.0-10.1 from unstable in a pinch, and that's the same
version in stable aka squeeze.

Thanks.

I'm afraid I don't have any experience with the hdhomerun plugin so
can't help here but that's quite an old release. I'd suggest grabbing
something more recent, either 1.9.0 or if you're comfortable with it
check out the Freevo-rel-1.9 branch from SVN. It has a lot of bug fixes
from 1.9.0 and is heading towards another beta release so should be
reasonably stable. See http://freevo.sourceforge.net/download/freevo.php
download details for both.

Check out the troubleshooting page, it should get you going in the right
direction, http://doc.freevo.org/TroubleShooting. You might also find
the developers checking the devel list a bit more often so if it's a bug
or patch you might be better off using that list.

I think that's a fair point and one where Freevo could potentially steal
a march on others. If there was a lower barrier to entry to getting a
Freevo based setup up and running we would attract a wider user base and
hopefully in turn more developers.

I know there was some movement on this in the past and a very rough
config editor was built into the web server but if someone could take up
that challenge it would be a big plus.

You wouldn't need detailed knowledge of Freevo's code. Just enough
python to parse and write the config file, maybe split it into multiple
smaller configs each focusing on one area for e.g. TV config, audio,
games etc. I'm sure the other developers would have some pointers on how
best to approach this.

Any takers?

I would really, really love to see someone take on a live distro for
Freevo. It's one of the more popular pages with visitors on
www.freevo.org, there's obviously interest there from those who want an
easy way to try it out. With the promise of new beta releases of Freevo

I think this is true and unfortunately the two previous attempts

You can look at openbricks.org
There is already a package with freevo 1.9.0 , dvbstreamer
and a (very) small script to configure it.
I can provide a config file to build it.
You can have a small live usb with freevo and it's easy to test

I'm pretty sure the youtube plugin was broken in 1.9.0. Try out a copy
of the latest beta
http://sourceforge.net/projects/freevo/files/Freevo%20releases/1.9.2b1/freevo-1.9.2b1.tar.bz2/download

or try svn. You might need to update kaa too for that.

[Freevo-users] Removal of skins from freevo-1, call for help for final default skin

2010-10-30 Thread John Molohan
Hi,

With the upcoming final release of freevo-1.x I'm wondering whether it
would be be a good idea to remove some of the skins. I think it's better
to have a smaller selection of higher quality skins than a larger
selection with some of the extras included of questionable worth. I've
just had a look over those included and Atlantice, Bluestar, Crystal and
Noia strike me as 4 that could be removed without offending anyone.

There is also great potential for a much improved UI with the
(relatively) new OSD code. We badly need someone to step forward and
really add some polish to what will be the final release before Adam and
others move on to work on Freevo 2. A good looking Freevo 1 release will
be used by a large number of people as freevo 2 is still some way off so
this work would be important for attracting more users and in turn
developers to help get momentum behind a freevo 2 release. If you think
you might be able to help, either in coding or in graphic design please
shout and maybe we can make the last release look as good as it functions.

Hi Alan,

I'm afraid you posted when the previous maintainer was stepping down and
the new maintainer hadn't really taken over things yet. Adam is working
away on freevo-1.x with a view to a release around Christmas. Best bet
is for you to submit this to the tracker and look for some feedback
there. If it is included it would be great if you can then update the wiki.

Hi Maciej,

You'll probably need to open a bug report for this. If you can test the
latest version from svn before hand then use the bug tracker if it still
exists.

recently to the youtube plugin. Can you test from svn and report if you
still see this?

No but I like the idea, something like map your Record button to a 'save
to library' feature. It might be an idea to have a 'show in library'
function too which doesn't actually download the file (most users have
permanent net access) but instead just links to it using a fxd included
in your library.

[Freevo-users] A warm welcome and a fond farewell - Freevo-1 gets a new maintainer

2010-09-06 Thread John Molohan
  Hi,

After nearly 5 years as the maintainer of Freevo-1.x Duncan Webb is now
stepping aside. Duncan stepped in and took the rains at a time when
Freevo-1.x was struggling to maintain momentum and looked like it might
disappear into the abyss as the original developers moved on, some with
other external responsibilities, others to begin work on a complete
rewrite of Freevo from the ground up (what is now the exciting Freevo 2
branch).

Duncan's contribution over those 5 years has brought many advancements
to Freevo and ensured a great project continued, much to the delight of
its loyal user-base. Through his own patches, plugins, advice and
patient user support on the mailing lists and his management of the bug
trackers he has ensured the long-term survival of Freevo and taken the
pressure off the Freevo 2 developers to work in their own time without
the distraction of supporting the existing code base. Without Duncan's
contribution the Freevo project would certainly not be where it is today
and for that we all own him a debt of gratitude. Thank you Duncan.

On an upbeat note I am glad to announce that the Freevo-1.x branch is in
safe hands. Adam Charrett has taken over the reins from Duncan and will
continue his hard work. Some of you may know Adam from his other media
related project DVBStreamer. Adam brings a great skill set to the
project and we're lucky to have someone like him step in. Adam will be
accepting patches for Freevo-1.x through the bug tracker and like Duncan
helping out on the mailing lists.

Of course change begets change and this is not the whole story. There
have been lots of other developments behind the scenes for Freevo
recently. Stay tuned for some news on the long anticipated Freevo 2 (or
check out the devel list and home page for announcements). It promises
to be worth the wait. :)

Hi Maciej,

For freevo-1.x yes, you have to install the full version however freevo
doesn't need to run. You can just start the recordserver standalone.
 From my understanding this won't be the case with freevo-2.x, you will
be able to install just the recordserver if you want.

Hi Phil,

Any chance you could update the wiki where you saw the out of date info
on the mouse? You also mention in your article that the wiki is missing
details which you cover about running a setup with an external STB. It
would be great to have the info in the wiki as well as the article if
you could update that?

Where are your logs writing to?

Hi.

Hi Alberto,

My logs are writing to /tmp, which is ramfs.

tmpfs 220M  124K  220M   1% /tmp

When it's full, freevo crashes, all right. But this usually doesn't
happen. Only when I set DEBUG=2 and have a lot of output.
Could it be that big images need a lot of memory to load, and there ir
no ram for /tmp? But then I'd have crashes watching movies, I think.
Well, when I have time, I'll try to write logs to another place.

Alberto
It might be that you have some bad RAM. I'd run a memcheck on it. Also
as you point out it could be that you're running out of space. Changing
the logs to write to another location might give a clue.

I haven't noticed this and I've got probably close to a thousand photos,
maybe more, all varying in size up to several megabytes.

 From a quick google that might be caused by a corrupt / incomplete
freevo install. Can you reinstall from packages or try installing from
source? The freevo-1.x branch is stable,

Hi Steve,

Something very similar is discusses here,

at a glance it seems a more straight foward example, might be easier to

This sounds like the problem with the autoshutdown plugin. It got broken
at some stage and I don't think it's fixed in svn. I'm pretty sure I
posted to the list about it but maybe I didn't post a bug report.

Do you have it enabled? If so try removing it and see if it helps.

Hi,

I don't have first hand experience of this plugin but it looks like it
might help:

freevo plugins -i usbstorage

Name: usbstorage
Type: MainMenuPlugin
File: /usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/freevo/plugins/usbstorage.py

Description:

Plugin for usb storage devices.

Parameter: name and mountpoint..
You should also activate the usb plugin so that the menu will change
when you plugin in or remove the usb storage device.

Example:
| plugin.activate('usb')
| plugin.activate('usbstorage', type='video', args=('USB Key', '/mnt/hd'))
| plugin.activate('usbstorage', type='audio', args=('USB Key', '/mnt/hd'))
| plugin.activate('usbstorage', type='image', args=('USB Key', '/mnt/hd'))

The plugin is not activated in the current setting

You need to define it in your local_conf.py. Mine currently looks like
this. Note there's no 'video' setting, it looks like you need to add one
for the youtube plugin, it could possibly be set to blank i.e. ''.

MPLAYER_ARGS = { 'dvd': '-cache 8192',
  'vcd': '-cache 4096',
  'cd' : '-cache 1024 -cdda speed=2',
  'tv' : '-nocache',
  'ivtv'   : '-cache 8192',
  'avi': '-cache 5000 -idx',
  'rm' : '-cache 5000 -forceidx',
  'rmvb'   : '-cache 5000 -forceidx',
  'webcam' : 'tv:// -tv
driver=v4l:width=352:height=288:outfmt=yuy2:device=/dev/video2',
  'default': '-cache 5000'
  }

I think Duncan is saying the crash is actually called by the debug
statement which tries to read the setting from MPLAYER_ARGS which in
your case is missing. If you removed the debug statement then the crash
wouldn't occur.

Hi Markus,

I've just come across this plugin, I haven't tried it but it looks like
it could be what you're looking for:

[j...@localhost ~]$ freevo plugins -i video.bilingual

Name: video.bilingual
Type: ItemPlugin
File: /usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/freevo/video/plugins/bilingual.py

Description:

Plug-in to play tv recordings which have bilingual audio

To activate, put the following line in local_conf.py:
| plugin.activate('video.bilingual')

The plugin is not activated in the current setting

Yes it looks like a lot of the hard work for the whole tv handling for
freevo 2 might be there in tvheadend. I hope someone has the time and

[Freevo-users] Anyone used Tvheadend?

2010-04-27 Thread John Molohan
Hi,

I just came across Tvheadend,
http://www.lonelycoder.com/hts/tvheadend_overview.html. I'm wondering if
anyone here has used it and has any feedback?

 From their overview:

'Tvheadend is a TV streaming server for Linux supporting DVB-S, DVB-S2,
DVB-C, DVB-T, ATSC, IPTV, and Analog video (V4L) as input sources.

It also comes with a powerful and easy to use web interface both used
for configuration and day-to-day operations, such as searching the EPG
and scheduling recordings.

Even so, the most notable feature of Tvheadend is how easy it is to set
up: Install it, navigate to the web user interface, drill into the TV
adapters tab, select your current location and Tvheadend will start
scanning channels and present them to you in just a few minutes'

Are you certain that the station is broadcasting metadata? I'm sure I
noticed while playing web radio recently that freevo was displaying the
song. This could be affected by a number of factors, the stream itself,
the skin used, maybe even the version of player used. Can you provide a
link to the stream and we can test it?

It might help if you detail exactly what commands you run on each
machine. It's possible there may be a bug or maybe it's just a
configuration thing, the lirc list might be helpful too.

As you point out it's mencoder and mplayer that you want to get to play
nice with this. I'd search for their settings for how to do this then
you can simply add them to your MPLAYER_ARGS and VCR_CMD.

Have you tried copying the command freevo is running for xine or mplayer

Towards the bottom of the page I linked this bit caught my eye:

In short, one could edit /usr/share/pyshared/sonata.py and add a line
sys.path.append('/usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/oldxml') just after
the first import statement. The ext.reader module is a part of PyExpat,
which could be found under that path.

 From a glance it looked like a similar fix might work for you with the
tvtime plugin but like I said this was from a 5 second search :)

No problem :) I think I recall that vlc doesn't have a 'slave' mode as
such like xine or mplayer and can't be controlled with lirc. Maybe that
has changed or there's another way to work around it at this stage. I
guess those using it must not be using a remote to control it?

Re: [Freevo-users] commdetectserver

2010-03-25 Thread John Molohan
Hi Dan,

Are you trying the play with alternative player while you're in the TV
menu? If so I've seen this and it seems to be a bug, it doesn't behave
as expected but I haven't got around to looking at it and filing a bug
report, maybe you can?

If you go into the 'watch a video' menu and access your recorded show
through that then the 'play with alternate player' choice you make
should work. Check the log files to confirm which player freevo is calling.

And I'm sure they'd appreciate it :) I know the feeling when it comes to
dedicating time to "that freevo thing"... If you're relatively new to
freevo you might still be able to help. Can you post under a new subject
what you think is lacking from the wiki, where is comes up short and
what would really help a new person in getting up and running? MythTV
certainly do seem to have a great wiki, it would be a big help if we
could raise the level of ours to match.

Excellent. Does that break anything else that you've seen? If not and
you can test for a while it might be an idea to propose it as a bug fix.
It could be as simple as a patch to local_conf.py that suggests people
enabling the appletrailers plugin use this if it doesn't make sense to
have it as a default. Either way it would certainly be useful to have in
the wiki.

There are still devels lurking, they just don't have much spare time at
the moment, I guess that's partly a reflection of the current climate.
What's really needed is a great skin designer more than anything.
Henne's new osd for freevo 1.x makes it possible to have a great looking
interface which freevo is currently lacking (other media centres have
already moved ahead in that area) to build on it's strong underlying
core. Having tested xbmc recently I'd be half temped to ask who ever

Did you try adding a 'mov' entry to the MPLAYER_ARGS setting in
local_conf? That's assuming it's possible to pass the user agent on the
command line.

However, it very effectively breaks the youtube plugin.

I took a look at the code, but got confused very quickly. (I am but a
humble network engineer) Class VideoItem has a mplayer_options, but
it's set from tvinfo[3] which is from show_name[0] from
config.VIDEO_SHOW_REGEXP_SPLIT(self.name)... it made my brain hurt. I
guess you could try to set it after init, but that seems to be a kluge.
I suppose I could look at it some more, but I still haven't had time to
update the wiki with the last information I found.

Somebody out there probably knows exactly where to stick this, right off
the top of their head. However, developers seem to be scarce these
days. Adding -user-agent 'QuickTime/7.5' is all that is needed to fix
this.

Hi Dan,

This is great to know. You could try email the plugin writer (email
address should be listed in the source file) and see if they could do
it? Otherwise hopefully one of the other contributors might look at it.

In the mean time can you add a note in the wiki for others?

Thanks,

John

Unless live TV works then the patch won't be accepted. It'll be a few

Ah. I'd agree with you there, a choice when the file is played again to

[Freevo-users] Lirc responsiveness [Solved]

2010-02-22 Thread John Molohan
Hi,

I've been using a MCE (Microsoft) media remote for a few years now with
freevo and have always found input sluggish compared to using the
keyboard. Turns out simply changing the priority lircd process solves
this for me (using lirc-0.8.3):

sudo renice -19 `echo \`pgrep lircd\` | sed -e 's/ /,/g'`

Hope this helps others. Some more tips and tricks for that remote can be
found at http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/MCE_Remote

It would be _really_ great if someone could test these various settings
and from the resulting fxd update http://doc.freevo.org/FXDFiles with
information on what can be customised and how with an fxd for those
who'd prefer not to use the GUI.

Hi Dan,

Have you followed the steps for troubleshooting in the wiki?

Can you post the output from your logs when you launch xine? Also copy
and paste the command freevo uses to launch xine into a terminal and see
if you can get it working there.

Just to be clear you're saying these patches haven't been tested with
the generic record plugin, they may or may not work, they need to be
tested? Should they currently work with ivtv or dvb or both?

I have only changed ivtv_record not the generic recoder as I do not
use it and hence cannot test it. Basically what I did in the ivtv
plugin was make an array of recodring cards in stead of the one
object. That needs to happen to the generic plugin too.

Grand, I'll test as soon as I can but that could still be a few weeks away.

Maybe Adam or one of the guys using DVB could take a look at making it

There are config options for sorting available through the UI by
pressing d (or the remote key you have mapped) on the specific
directory. I'm not if you can set these in an fxd, maybe that's what the
UI setting actually does, you'd have to test.

* tv/channels.py
* tv/plugins/ivtv_record.py

Similar changes need to be made to generic record but I guess that is
better to be done by someone who actually uses that plugin.
The VIDEO_GROUP I use as follows (slightly different from the standard
use!)

VIDEO_GROUPS = [
  VideoGroup(vdev="/dev/video1",
  adev=None,
  input_type='tuner 1',
#  input_num=0,
  tuner_norm=CONF.tv,
  tuner_chanlist=CONF.chanlist,
  desc='Cable',
  group_type='ivtv',
record_group=None),
 VideoGroup(vdev="/dev/video0",
  adev=None,
  input_type='tuner 1',
#  input_num=0,
  tuner_norm=CONF.tv,
  tuner_chanlist=CONF.chanlist,
  desc='Cable',
  group_type='ivtv',
record_group=None)
   ]

Please provide feedback!

Paul

Hi Paul,

Thanks for your work on this. I haven't got my freevo box up and running
at the moment but as soon as it's back in action I'll apply your patches
and test them.

Just to be clear you're saying these patches haven't been tested with
the generic record plugin, they may or may not work, they need to be
tested? Should they currently work with ivtv or dvb or both?

Thanks,

John

Check your logs and copy and paste the command freevo is using to play
the DVD into a terminal and see if it plays correctly there. If not post
the logs.

Thanks for the update. If you have time it would probably be better to
change the skin to use the userdate instead and submit a patch if you could.

Hi Paul,

I've always run freevo -fs and when I did finally get around to setting
this up I ended up doing something similar, launching a new X session
and switching between the two.

I'm afraid a change to the apple site broke the plugin a while back. I
suggested previously the best way might be to reuse the apple trailer
plugin from one of the other python based media centre's that was up to
date and just adapt it for freevo. I can't remember which one it was but
if you search the archives you should find it. It shouldn't take too
much effort to rewrite it for freevo.

Have you checked the fxd's to see if the info is still there? If so it
could be a change to the skin, 1.6 to 1.9 has seen a lot change. If the
info is still in the files try a couple of other skins to see if they
display the info, if so you can probably add the code back to the skin
of your choice.

While on the topic, I don't suppose you could add support to the record
server to allow a frontend freevo instance to use another recordserver
on the network to record? This along with multiple tuner support would rock.

What should I do to have recorded TV cropped correctly?

I'd argue a full detailing of the settings and instructions would be
useful, especially if you remember to keep them up to date. Even if you
don't new users often don't have a clue about configuring or installing
xmltv let alone freevo so the more detail that can be given in step by

Don't worry, it's a fair question.

I can't commit no, Duncan is the maintainer of the 1.x branch and would
be the one committing it. He asked a long time ago that people use the
tracker for a number of reasons including crediting the user, tracking
the bugs and feature requests and to make sure that patches don't get
lost in the list archives if he doesn't get around to applying them
quickly. There were probably a few others too, sourceforge statistics at
a guess.

As it happens he's been pretty busy lately and is only getting back to
spending some time on the 1.x branch now after a long break. It's handy
for him to be able to browse the trackers and know exactly what's
outstanding rather than having to trawl through every single post to the
users and devel lists to get up to speed.

Hi Anders,

Thanks for the patch, can you submit it to the bug tracker to make sure
it gets included?

There is now support for configuring freevo through the web interface.
I'd take a backup of your local_conf.py as a matter of habit. It's not
the prettiest interface in the world but your kids should be able to use
it to add headline locations etc. One thing that's missing now that I
think about it is a way to stop and start freevo from the web interface
so that changes can be applied. I'll add that at some stage if I remember.

I don't use this feature so I can't say I've noticed. Have you reverted
to a previous freevo version and confirmed it works with that? If so you
can narrow down the changes and have a look at the changelog and the
source to see what changed. Normally I'd say turn on debugging and
report back what you see in the logs but I'm guessing that there's not
much there on this.

There might be one in the wiki (maybe not) but if you don't get an
answer here the xmltv mailing list should definitely provide the answer.
